Silvia Aires, 72 years old. She has a land plot. She uses it for her own consumption and for her children. This land plots are part of the Lisbon City Hall initiative to promote the cultivation of vegetables. Silvia lives in the city but she was raised on a rural area. This is a way for her to spend time in an useful way and near something that she values, the land.

1.Offline Observation

I observed so many new 70’s on the streets! They gather with their neighbours on the streets for a spontaneous chat. They’re passing by and then, they stop because they seam to find people that they know quite well. This happened during the morning. We can see mostly women carrying shopping bags.

1.Offline Observation

During the afternoon i observed some of them walking the dog or their grandchildren. I observed that the baby strollers are full of stuff and they look quite heavy for an 70 years old. I also observed that their dogs have covers and those with more mobility difficulties do not catch the dogs poop. Those who catch it, have some plastic bags.

When there’s good weather, men go to public garden tables to play cards. They use cardboards from the coffee shops nearby to write down the results and use some little rocks to put on top of the cards because of the wind. They also cover their heads with the cardboards or with their coats. While their playing, their wives wait nearby on the park bench talking (they do talk a lot). I notice that this benches are not big enough for them. Some have to remain on their feet and put their bags on the floor.

1.Offline Observation

During the weekend we can see buses coming from different cities and villages making tours to Lisbon with the new 70’s (some bring their grandchildren). They dress very well. Along the river Tejo, we can watch men fishing for their dinners. They can stay there from five to six hours (they take lunch with them). This is a hobby and a way of spending less money with food.

1.Offline Observation

At the Mall we can find some 70’s during the afternoon, very well dressed and mostly reading newspapers or watching TV. Some of them don’t have TV at home, some have but don’t have cable TV to see the news channels or football channels. During winter, it’s warmer over there. Some have very cold houses. This is also a way of spending less money heating up their homes. Some go there to meet the usual guys.

The market is also a place where we can find the new 70’s. They go in the morning to buy fresh fish, meat and vegetables (the market only opens during the morning). Some of them have to take their grandchildren because they also take care of them (this is a way of saving some money with kindergartens). I observed that they really know the fishes names, different types of meat and vegetables. They also talk a lot with the sellers.

1.Offline Observation

During the afternoon i found this three friends and neighbours on the coffee shop around the corner. They go there every day around 3 pm. The owners call it: “ A hora do reformado” (the retired hour)! Their have the same names, Maria. They go there to meet each other and sometimes they go for a walk around the neighbourhood after. Two of them live alone and the other one lives with her daughter. They where talking about the amount of tourist arriving to Lisbon and the quantity of hostels opening (there’s a new one on the area). One of them was showing me her smartphone: “this picture here is to call my grandson, this one is for messages because i understand what the pictures means…”. When they have some technological doubts, they ask the coffee shop owners. They where all born in Alentejo (rural area).

2. Before i fall asleep project

This is Maria Luisa bedside table. She has two bedside tables and uses both of them but, she says that this is the main one. She has 74 years old and she’s also a researcher (Portuguese language). She reads a lot before she goes to sleep. She also has a lipstick on the bedside table, an empty bottle of water (that she fills with tap water before she goes to bed) and hand cream. She wakes up with her electronic alarm clock.

2. Before i fall asleep project Bedside Tables

This is Maria Lívia bedside table. She’s 75 years old. She’s the mother of a friend of mine (Manel). He asked her to take a snapshot from her bedside table and to send it on WhatsApp… she did… but without her things on it (he told me that it was very hard to explain her mother how to send a photo on WhatsApp). And then Manel: “I’ve already asked another snapshot, but now she sent me one video… digital difficulties.” I had to stick to this one and to Manel’s description of what’s on her mothers bedside table. There’s a table lamp made by his son on high school (Manel is a product designer) and the alarm clock. The bedside table is oriental (they lived many years in Macau). This was a particular funny observation.
