SHALOM BAYIT CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY

In This Issue

This fall Shalom Bayit marked our 15th anniversary with a phenomenal celebration, Body & Soul: Sustaining Ourselves and Each Other— a healing spa and gala reception honoring our 15 years of service to the Jewish community. Over the past 15 years Shalom Bayit’s programs and community of supporters have only grown stronger, and this was clear as we gathered to mark the occasion on October 7th at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco.

Spa guests enjoyed relaxing massages, a nail spa, a healing circle led by our own Aliza Rothman, and informative lectures on Jewish healing. Dr. Neil Risch, director of the Institute for Human Genetics at UCSF, presented his fascinating work on Jewish genetic diseases, the intersection of genetics and environment, and how we can increase community awareness to prevent the proliferation of genetic diseases affecting the Jewish community. Rabbi William Cutter, founding director of the Kalsman Institute on Judaism and Health in Los Angeles, spoke about his book Healing & the Jewish Imagination. He discussed how the Jewish community’s historical fear of stigma prevents our addressing difficult health and mental health issues, including domestic violence.

From all these speakers we learned a great deal about communal efforts to heal the body and soul.

The healing spa theme of the event was a reminder that in order to truly sustain each other, we must also nourish and sustain ourselves.

At the gala reception and auction following the healing spa, KRON 4 TV presenter Henry Tenenbaum (of Henry’s Garden fame) energized the crowd as Master of Ceremonies. Opening remarks by host committee co-chairs Roselyne

and Marjorie Swig reminded us that abuse can affect any one of us, any time. Bayit’s co-founder, Sherry Brown-Ryther.

All of us were propelled into action by the moving stories told by those affected by abuse, from a rabbi’s journey of leaving her abusive marriage to a father parenting his teenage daughter through a dating violence crisis. Their voices were a compelling reminder of how Shalom Bayit is a healing force for families remaking their lives in the aftermath of abuse.

Body & Soul was a joyful, fun-filled event that also reflected the profound impact of Shalom Bayit’s work. Our tremendous thanks to 250 supporters, attendees, sponsors, speakers and volunteers who made Body & Soul a success. Collectively you helped us raise over $50,000 which will provide healing of body and soul to more than 60 victims of domestic abuse in the coming year, and ensure that young people will gain skills for leading healthy relationships.

Over the past fifteen years, our efforts have opened many of the doors once closed to Jewish battered women. Where once the words “domestic violence” could scarcely be uttered publicly in a Jewish setting, today we are proud to have created many changes that pave the way for survivors of abuse to find hope and healing within our community.

Our 15th year has been truly extraordinary—full of milestones and blessings. In one short year we marked the national publication of our teen curriculum; joined the San Francisco Federation family; launched a new support group in Marin, and expanded to open a Peninsula satellite office. With active programs in five counties, Shalom Bayit is growing in leaps and bounds. It is thanks to you, our community of supporters, that we can open so many doors for battered women & their children.

As a woman steps through our doorway, she moves from victim to survivor; from despair to hope; from endangered to empowered. It is the opening of the door, the welcome, the promise of safe haven that transforms lives. As we look towards the next 15 years, all of us at Shalom Bayit THANK YOU for opening doors toward hope, health, and healing for all.

San Francisco Interfaith Council Honors Shalom Bayit

At the 10th Annual Mayor’s Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Breakfast, Shalom Bayit received the 2007 Models of Hope Award honoring our work to end violence in San Francisco. The award, presented by the SF Interfaith Council, recognized community initiatives that are models of inspiration and hope in their quest to end violence of all kinds. “Among the many impressive efforts of Shalom Bayit,” writes Interfaith Council organizer Abby Michelson Porth of the Jewish Community Relations Council, “is its utilization of Jewish healing rituals to help survivors of abuse transform their lives within a spiritual framework, and also its coordination of more than 40 rabbis on their Rabbinic Advisory Council.” Adds Rabbi Eric Weiss,

Executive Director of the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center, “Shalom Bayit’s work changes the quality of life for our citizens one family at a time, every day of the year. Shalom Bayit is an unsung hero in our communi ty .” For more information on our Bay Area and statewide interfaith clergy training initiatives, call (510) 451-8874.

New Peninsula Office Opens

After six years of successful operations based out of our Oakland office (and nine years prior to that with no office at all), Shalom Bayit is pleased to announce the opening of a Peninsula-based

satellite office for client services. Thanks to generous donors on the Peninsula, and with additional support from the Jewish Community Endowment Fund, our long time dream of locating services on the Peninsula has become a reality.

While maintaining our main office in Oakland and our satellite services in “borrowed spaces” in San Francisco, Marin, and San Jose, the Peninsula office will provide a stable and confidential location for women on the Peninsula to access Shalom Bayit’s services. Our new Peninsula home will be available for client counseling sessions, community meetings and support groups. The office will help reduce the complex arrangements we make each time our counselor meets with a woman in need of our services, traveling to meet each individual woman for support. We are grateful to many Jewish Community Centers, synagogues and other agencies throughout the Bay Area who provide occasional free meeting space for this purpose, but it is not ideal for providing confidential counseling to victims of abuse. In order to reduce barriers to accessing our services, it was important for us to secure a private location where we can meet with women in need of confidential counseling. The office will also strengthen our Peninsula presence, bringing our programs directly to areas of need.

The office will provide a regular, accessible local meeting location for clients and constituents, and greatly increase our accessibility to battered women on the Peninsula in need of our services. To reach our Peninsula office, call (650) 574-SAFE.

Warm thanks to Steve Kaufman, Holly & Jeff Ullman, Rabbi Marv Goodman, Alternative Telecom & Networks,

The Jewish Community Endowment Fund, and our many Peninsula donors who made this dream possible!

Shalom Bayit Becomes San Francisco Jewish Community

Federation Beneficiary

The Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin & Sonoma Counties has accepted Shalom Bayit as a new beneficiary agency. Shalom Bayit now joins the network of Federation-affiliated agencies that work together to build a strong Jewish community. As we mark and celebrate Shalom Bayit’s 15th anniversary of providing Jewish-focused domestic violence services, we can’t think of a better way to mark this milestone than by the receiving of this great honor. Joining the Federation family will bring important visibility and long-term sustainability to our efforts. We thank the JCF Board, Caring Commission, and professional leadership for your support and recognition of domestic violence as a critical issue facing our community today.

AROUND THE BAY. . .Announcements & Regional Programs

After extensive outreach efforts over the past six months, Shalom Bayit launched our new Marin Support Group, facilitated by Aliza Rothman and Marjorie Swig. With six women participating from throughout the North Bay region, the group is providing critical crisis intervention, spiritual support, and domestic violence education for women who have been in abusive relationships. The group will run through February. Whether the abuse is past or present, the spiritual healing group provides a place for women to break the isolation they experienced as victims of abuse, and create community with others who share similar experiences. Together the group participants find healing and forge a path towards a life free from violence.

The group is provided in collaboration with the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center and is made possible by a grant from the Jewish Community Endowment Newhouse Fund, together with contributions from our many generous donors in Marin. Co-sponsors include Congregation Rodef Sholom, Congregation Kol Shofar, Family & Children’s Law Center, Marin Abused Women’s Services, and the Osher Marin JCC.

Adopt-a-Family

Thanks to YOUR wonderful generosity over a dozen Shalom Bayit families this year celebrated a great Chanukah miracle as our staff delivered toys, gifts, clothing, food and other surprises to fulfill their

holiday wish lists. Thank you to our Adopt-A-Family sponsors: Berkeley Midrasha, Carol Platner, Claremont Hotel & Resorts, Lori Fineman / Women’s

American ORT, National Council of Jewish Women—Contra Costa Section, Susan Rancer and friends, Sandra Lipkowitz & the SF Mah Jong girls.

You bring light to those coming out of darkness, and warm the hearts of our children as we give them a Chanukah like no other.

What is The Tides Center, anyway? Many of you may wonder about the nature of Shalom Bayit’s relationship with the Tides Center, or why their name appears on your statement when you make a donation to us. Based in San Francisco, the Tides Center is an organization dedicated to providing fiscal sponsorship to small social justice organizations. For a small income-based fee, Tides provides our nonprofit tax status and many administrative services such as accounting, payroll, HR, health insurance, liability coverage, and more.

A team of specialists processes our grants and donations, ensures compliance with all laws governing nonprofits, maintains due diligence in regards to our finances (including an annual audit), and provides experts in many areas of nonprofit management. These invaluable services enable small agencies like ours to focus on the programmatic work we do best, while maintaining the highest fiscal accountability. As our nonprofit status is through Tides, Shalom Bayit is legally a “project of the Tides Center,” and our staff are Tides employees. Though there are over 300 Tides projects, Shalom Bayit maintains a unique mission and advisory board. Here, Shalom Bayit staff is pictured with some of our Tides team at a recent project meeting and luncheon. Thanks, Tides for all you do for us!

The Youth Program at Shalom Bayit

Love Shouldn’t Hurt reaches adolescent and young adult Jews (ages 11-21) in the greater Bay Area with abuse prevention and healthy relationships education. Since 2002, over 2,400 youth have participated in our workshops.

This year we reached 450 youth and youth educators, and led more parent education workshops than before, reaching over 60 parents of teens. Workshops offer strategies for abuse prevention and healthy relationship development among teens. Parents learn how to talk to teens about relationships, identify warning signs of abuse, and help those who may be in an abusive relationship.

In March we debuted our long awaited national curriculum on Jewish teen dating violence prevention. Love Shouldn’t Hurt is now being used all over the world, including Australia, Canada,

England, Israel, New Zealand, and in Jewish communities across the US. Our successful Bay Area program will now be helping Jewish youth around the globe to prevent dating violence before it starts.

Love Shouldn’t Hurt

Many thanks to The Hadassah Foundation, Blue Shield of California Foundation, the Jewish Community Foundation & Federation of the Greater East Bay, the Richard & Rhoda Goldman Fund, and Verizon Wireless for providing vital support to bring Love Shouldn’t Hurt to Jewish Communities everywhere.
