Held in conjunction with the conferencewas thepresentationof the16thAnnualHotel Security Awards. The award wasjointly presented by SHA, the SPF andNCPCtohotelswhichhaveupheldsafetyandsecurityasatoppriority.
A total of 67 hotels qualified for thehotelsecurityaward,ofwhich30hotelswere presented with the “Hotel SecurityExcellence Award” for achieving theSS545 standard. Another 37 hotelsreceived the “Hotel Security Award” forestablishing good security measuresbasedonSS545.
Inaddition,atotalof223individualswereacknowledged for their exemplary actwithcertificatesofcommendationunderthe categories of Honesty, Bravery andVigilance.

The four-day event which was held alongside Food & HotelMalaysia saw 1,318 chefs and students from Asia comingtogethertopittheirculinaryskillsagainstoneanother.
Amidst strong competition, 3 Shatec students did the schoolproud as they bagged top awards with their skillful culinaryperformance. Matthew Leong clinched the Gold award undertheindividualcategoryforhisapprenticefour-coursesetmenu,whileDanielChin’s interpretationofplatedishessnaggedhimthe Silver award. Meanwhile, June Tay’s apprentice chicken/salmonmaincoursewasrecognisedwithaBronzeawardintheOpenCategory.

AspartofitseffortstoallowprospectivestudentstohaveabetterunderstandingofShatecInstitutes,OpenHousesessionsareheldonaregularbasis,withthemostrecentbeingon19November2011.
AttherecentOpenHouse,participantsweregivenaglimpseintotheworldofhospitalitythroughasharingsessionbyShatecalumniwhohavecarvedoutasuccessfulcareerintheindustry.
Participants were introduced to a wide range of hospitality and culinary coursesofferedbyShatecInstitutes.Theywerealsogivenaguidedtourofthecampuswhichshowcased the school’s training facilities. The tour concluded with a buffet spreadwhichwasspeciallypreparedbyShatec’sveryownculinarystudents.
Inaddition,theparticipantswereimpressedbythevariousdemonstrationsputupbythecurrentstudentswhichincludedcocktailmixingandbed-making.Lastbutnotleast,theparticipantswerealsointroducedtotheintricaciesoftruebutlerservice.

Going beyond textbooks and practice sessions,studentshadafirst-handexperienceofworkinginthehotelindustrythroughtheirinternshipprogramme.
Morethan200Shatecstudentsrecentlywentthroughanewinternship placement exercise. In this particular exercise,the Student Services & Administration department invitedindustryrepresentativestospeaktothestudentsoncareerpathways at their hotels. After the industry presentations,hotel representatives met up with students for on-siteinterviews.
Theon-campusinternshipplacementdrivewaswell-receivedbybothparticipatinghotelsandstudentsalike.
Hotels which were present included Carlton Hotel, ConradCentennial Singapore, Mandarin Orchard Singapore, Shangri-LaSingapore,TheFullertonHotelSingaporeandTheSt.RegisSingapore.

This year, the competition was divided into threecategories, namely hotels, travel agents and other services.Participating companies were required to submit an essaydescribing theirproductivity storyand2selectedentries fromeachcategoryweremadeintoamotivatingshortvideoforpublicvoting.MandarinOrchardSingaporeclinched the topspot forthehotelcategoryandwalkedawaywithacashprizeof$8,000.Thesecondprizeof$4,000wenttoFairmontHotel.

TheSingapore TourismBoard(STB) recently launched itsseries of differentiated marketing campaigns, starting withthe New Discoveries campaign in Beijing, China. This hasbeentailoredtosuit theneedsofconsumers inChina. Inthecomingmonths,customisedmarketingplanswillberolledoutinphasesacrossotherkeymarkets,includingAustralia,India,IndonesiaandMalaysia.
Thenewapproach,whichisfocusedonaddressingconsumerneeds, marks a departure from the destination marketingstrategythatSTBusedtoemployacrossdifferentmarkets.Theconsumermarketingapproachhasresultedinmoretargetedandintegratedmarketingcampaigns thatwill comprisePR, aboveandbelow-the-lineadvertisinganddigitalmarketing.
