Dear Seven Hills family and friends,
3
This August marked the 40th anniversary of the 1974 merger between the College Preparatory School (CPS) and the Hillsdale-Lotspeich Schools that formed a new entity, known as The Seven Hills Schools. In just two years, the leaders of those respective institutions created a new school community that would meld the glorious traditions of two !ne schools and ensure the long-term survival of both. It is astonishing to contemplate how much wisdom and energy went into that undertaking. Though, at the time, the proud graduates of both institutions worried about the cultures of each school being “submerged in the other,” the end result was a greatly enriched school community, which continues to honor the proud traditions of two—indeed three—complementary institutions.
The roots of Seven Hills reach back to 1906, when Miss Doherty’s College Preparatory School for Girls was established on the present site of The Doherty School on Johnstone Place. They grew stronger in 1916, when Mrs. Helen Lotspeich founded the Cilfton Open-Air School, a progressive elementary school on Resor Avenue. The school "owered again, in 1927, when a group of Lotspeich parents, led by Cecil and Louise Gamble, started a secondary school, the Hillsdale School, in Madisonville, with Miss Marian Titcomb as its !rst headmistress. And the school continued to grow when, in 1930, the Miss Lospeich’s Open-Air School was moved to the Hillsdale campus.
These visionary school leaders, Miss Doherty, Mrs. Lotspeich, and Mrs. Titcomb, established the founding principles on which so much would be later built. From the beginning, there was Miss Doherty’s commitment to academic rigor, a !erce determination to prepare students, the young women of that time, to reach their fullest potential not only as students, but as human beings. There was, too, a commitment not only to scholarship, but to vigorous exercise and active community involvement. From Mrs. Lotspeich and Mrs. Titcomb came a deep commitment to educational progressivism, rooted in the philosophy of John and Evelyn Dewey, including:
a desire to empower children to develop naturally
a recognition of the importance of providing clear motivation for learning tasks
a !rmly-held view of the teacher as a guide, not a taskmaster
close attention to physical and emotional development, not just intellectual
an insistence on close collaboration between the school and the home to meet the needs of children
CPS and Hillsdale-Lotspeich each gathered strength through the war years and into the 1950s and 1960s, building facilities and adding programs (and boys!) until the challenges of the early 1970s triggered the economic conditions that led to the merger.
The Seven Hills of today is the fortunate bene!ciary of the efforts of legions of school leaders and committed volunteers who saw the school through that merger and through its subsequent development as The Seven Hills School. This special edition of the Annual Report celebrates the vision and the energy of all those who have helped bring Seven Hills to this point: visionary heads like Ruth Russell Jones, Rodney Beach, Francis W. Lovett, Doug Stenberg, Peter Briggs and Debbie Reed; gifted administrators like Ted Wuerfel and Patti Guethlein, Carolyn Fox, and Susan Marrs (and many others far too numerous to enumerate); dedicated faculty members; generous supporters; committed trustees and parents; loyal students and alumni.
Though the Seven Hills of today is larger and arguably more complex than its antecedents, we are, at our core, the same school: unswervingly committed to challenging young people to reach their full potential, both as students and as people. Fundamentally, it is the uniquely af!rming culture of this school that best de!nes us: our determination to grow into the best versions of ourselves, to support one another, and, ultimately, to devote our talents to improving the world around us. It is a privilege to celebrate, together, all that Seven Hills has been, what we are now, and what we are becoming.
Christopher P. Garten Head of School
board
As Chair of the Board, it is my privilege to thank this entire community for all you have done to support the continuing evolution of our school during the 2013-14 academic year. Much of this year has been devoted to enacting some key initiatives from the Strategic Plan of 2013, which the Board of Trustees adopted in May, 2013. Among our key goals were to strengthen Seven Hills’ market position by providing the best educational experience in our area:
Maintain robust enrollment to sustain a broad-based program Enhance the diverse culture of Seven Hills Sustain the excellence of the faculty and staff Continue to focus on curriculum innovation Strengthen real world learning opportunities Nurture individual talents Improve key facilities
I am thrilled to report substantial progress on many of these goals in this, the !rst year of our !ve-year plan!
Student Enrollment: We opened in 2014-15 with more than 1,040 students, an increase of more than 80 students over the last !ve years.
Diversity and Inclusion: Students of color now make up 30% of our student population, almost double the number from just 10 years ago.
Faculty Excellence: With the new endowments provided by the Critical Assets Campaign, mean faculty salaries have grown from 77% to 90% among benchmark Midwest schools. We have doubled our professional development budget and funded more than 150 curriculum renewal grants since 2010.
Program Initiatives: The 2013-14 year saw the expansion of our Beginnings program for children ages 12-36 months and the successful launch of a pre-kindergarten for two-year-olds feeder program on the Doherty campus.
For 2014-15, the Middle School has developed more robust advisory programs, added sixth-grade conversational Spanish to supplement the French and Latin rotation, and added a pilot program — The Innovation Lab — to give students experience with design thinking.
As part of a modest expansion in Upper School, we have added four full-time positions, both to maintain the small classes and close relationships that de!ne Seven Hills and to enhance academic support services, college counseling, and the college readiness program launched this year. In 2014-15, Head of Upper School Nick Francis will assume his new role of Director of Experiential Learning, to engage students more fully in real world learning: career exploration, community involvement, and service learning, leadership training, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Dear friends,
board chair
In 2013-14, our performing arts department strengthened our musical theater program in both Middle and Upper School. In November, students performed Little Shop of Horrors, the !rst Upper School musical in 20 years, and, in April, 60 Middle School students performed 42nd Street, with a chorus line of 30 tap dancers!
Athletic Director Brian Phelps continues to expand athletic options, adding a Middle School swimming program to feed our state championship team in Upper School.
Facilities EnhancementsWith generous support from our Board of Trustees and other lead donors, we have begun constructing two of the four major facilities projects enumerated in our Strategic Plan. On May 1, we broke ground on the Nellie Leaman Taft Early Childhood Center on the Hillsdale campus, a state-of-the-art facility, which will make possible the long hoped for consolidation of Lotspeich’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms, now separated into two different buildings.
At the same time, to provide more !eld space for our student athletes in all four divisions, we have built a new athletic complex on the lower !elds of the Hillsdale campus: two all-weather turf !elds and a grass softball !eld, hillside seating, stadium lighting, and an access road with a parking area.
The Board’s Facilities Committee is !nalizing a comprehensive master site plan, which includes plans for a much-needed auditorium and a new Middle School building, to meet, much more fully, the unique learning needs of students in our fastest-growing division.
It has, in short, been a wonderfully successful year, thanks, in no small part to the leadership of our dedicated Board of Trustees and to the unwavering commitment of so many friends and supporters. It has been a great privilege to lead the Board these past two years, and it is a pleasure to leave the school in the able hands of my successor, Beth Schiff, who, along with our Head of School Chris Garten, will guide the school through the next phase of its evolution.

IN SPRING 2014, WE ASKED SEVERAL MEMBERS OF OUR PAST AND CURRENT SEVEN HILLS SCHOOL COMMUNITY TO SHARE FOND MEMORIES OF SEVEN HILLS AND ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE IMPACT THE SCHOOL HAS HAD ON THEIR LIVES. IN OUR 2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT, YOU WILL HEAR FROM ALUMNI, PARENTS, CURRENT STUDENTS, GRANDPARENTS, AND ADMINISTRATORS WHO SHARE MEMORIES THAT PAINT A PICTURE OF OUR SCHOOL IDENTITY OVER THE PAST FOUR DECADES.
!e Seven Hills School story branches from a collective history of three beloved schools with poignant beginnings: Founded in 1906 by the intellectual Mary Harlan Doherty, Miss Doherty’s College Preparatory School for Girls remained one of the "rst of its kind in the Cincinnati area. Ten years later in 1916, !e Lotspeich School, noted as experiential and curious, emerged out of the desire of the progressive-minded Helen Gibbons Lotspeich to educate boys and girls in an environment that fostered their natural curiosity, creativity, and joy for learning. !e Lotspeich School grew to serve dozens of students, and by 1927, a group of parents founded !e Hillsdale School, which became a leader among progres-sive schools for girls.
!is multifaceted history is told through-out the Annual Report via "rst-person essays from past Heads of School Peter Briggs and Debbie Reed, and current
Others will remember how you felt when Turansky opened your eyes to new ways of viewing authority, and to when you realized fruit break wasn’t a universal option at other schools. Some of you will clearly remember the names “Bober, Brestel, Cohen,” and “Koenitzer.” All of you will know the name “Marrs.”
!ese memories shed new light on our storied past and illuminate who we are and who we will become. Enjoy this publication, which incorporates a unique fabric of vivid memories, humorous quips, and heartfelt reminiscences. !ese memories are just the beginning of our yearlong celebration of 40 years. Look for more of these quotes in our upcoming fall and spring magazines as well. !ese words serve as a culminating narrative of the school’s "rst 40 years of educational excellence, and of how the school’s legacy will continue on with purposeful success for generations to come.
Head of School Chris Garten. We will hear from friends of the school who have been touched by the spirit of community pervasive throughout the years. And we will hear from alumni who a#ended Middle School in a mansion on the Doherty Campus, those who checked student messages at Upper School’s Four Corners, and those who used to giggle with friends while singing !e Lotspeich Song. !ese words from old friends will take you back to discovering the utility and beauty of science with David Abineri in the lower level, catching up on community play reviews with Pa#y Flanigan in her o$ce, and that day when it dawned on you that some of your Seven Hills teachers were tougher than your "rst- and second-year college professors. Some of you will remember that before Homecoming there was “Harvest Fair,” and you will read comments about the ongoing dedication, driving passion, and commitment of Seven Hills faculty.

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.
The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.
The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee that includes engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.
The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.
Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking student-faculty ratios, and removing underenrolled programs.
The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology.
Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

The Seven Hi l ls Fund
$679,940
2013-2014 was a record year for The Seven Hills Fund! With a goal of $1,215,000, we are thrilled to announce that we have met and surpassed that goal by more than $100,000 and The Seven Hills Fund has achieved a record of $1,343,000. We are so grateful for your continued and outstanding support!
The success of the program was achieved through record participation percentages across all constituencies, and a dramatic increase in leadership giving, helping to obtain The Luther Foundation Leadership Challenge Match of $100,000. Simply put, more members of our community believe in the importance of the Fund and are willing to support it at a greater level.
Seven Hills depends on annual giving gifts to bridge the gap between operational expenses and income from tuition, fees, and other sources. While tuition covers 80 percent of educating each child for the academic year, The Seven Hills Fund covers the remaining 20 percent. Your generosity makes possible the full richness of the Seven Hills experience.
We thank you for partnering with us to give our students the resources and experiences that will fully prepare them for all that lies ahead. The Seven Hills Fund creates student experiences that help shape values, stimulate creativity, and evoke compassion. The Fund also helps sustain the foundation of excellence upon which Seven Hills continues to "ourish.
A special thanks to Jennifer Stein, Trustee and Development Chair, the Development Commit-tee, and the 217 annual giving volunteers who made calls, wrote notes, and helped promote annual giving. In so many ways, their participation, effort, and enthusiasm helped make our annual fund accomplishments possible this year.
The tradition of philanthropy at Seven Hills is strong, and this year’s success of The Seven Hills Fund solidi!es your commitment and passion for our school. For that, we thank you.
Note: Donors who represent more than one group are tallied in only one category according to the order of priority shown above.

One doesn’t measure the quality of a school by major events. It is day by day in the seemingly trivial experiences of their students’, parents’ and teachers’ lives together that the character and tone of a school are tested and revealed. The qualities of kindness and intelligence in faculty and staff are far more important than any theory or dogma.– Opening School Quote by Peter Briggs

Every one of my 19 opening-of-school le#ers started with a quote, and this was my favorite. We found that these le#ers set an important tone, were grounding and unifying, and gave everyone something fundamental to ponder as we launched another academic year.
For more than 100 years, harking back to Miss Doherty and Mrs. Lotspeich, our Seven Hills story has been one of opti-mism, progress, and trust, but I will never forget an encounter with our auditor in the "rst month of my tenure, when he warned me in con"dence that, “your enrollment is unlikely to come close to what was projected last spring, and a substantial operating de"cit seems inevitable.”
I had come to Seven Hills from a small boarding school with a sizeable endowment near Akron, and loved becoming part of a highly respected urban day school. !e Vietnam War was changing our country’s society, and
blessed with a faculty of distinguished and seasoned visionaries, which remains so. We more than survived several bizarre crises, which included a devastating fire at Lotspeich, the condemnation of Doherty’s classroom building, and a lengthy Arab oil embargo. Some of our graduates remember those experiences fondly.
At all times, our school families contin-ued to believe in Seven Hills, and in the rare opportunities our students were having. !ey understood that being part of Seven Hills is a privilege, and worked hard to help us nurture a "rst-rate educational experience for generations of children, indeed laying the groundwork for the uniquely strong and familial culture that remains today.
Being part of this culture has been the single professional highlight of my life.
helping to make coeducation and our merger successful seemed very exciting, especially given that our three predecessor schools brought with them positive, strong identities.
I knew that the elite eastern boarding schools, which many of our prospective parents had a#ended, were diminishing in popularity in the Midwest, and that was a plus for us. I also knew that boys schools that had become coeducational were "nding it easier to a#ract girls than girls schools seeking to enroll boys, and worked hard at addressing that challenge, si#ing down individually with the parents of all our families with middle school-age sons. Many of those families have stayed with us through subsequent generations, and this makes me very proud.
In all my 19 years, working with nine di%erent Boards of Trustees, those families were thoughtful, un&appable, and generous in every way, and we were

”Seven Hills is special because there are places to go – places to be without someone breathing down your neck and
without everything having to be nailed down. The school takes care of its kids this way – this open culture giving freedom to
dig into what it is you love.”
Ellie Fabe 7̀8
“Highly in"uential teachers like Donald Bober and Barbara Beaver were relentless in demanding excellence and were both able to
inspire us to give a 100 percent effort toward any endeavor.”
“Peter Briggs really came into a dif!cult situation. He made this school what it is.“

“Middle School was on the Doherty Campus when I attended. We went to school in that huge mansion. Our Latin room was a tiny bedroom, our English room was a living room. There was a sense of feeling at home.”
Ellen Haude 8̀8
“The quality of the educational and social experience, the dedication and availability of my teachers, and the connections to a larger community have all in"uenced me to become a professional educator and give back to the community in which I have settled (Albuquerque, New Mexico). I draw inspiration from my entire Seven Hills experience every day.”

Seven Hills is transformative and intellectual. The teachers are brilliant at what they do and the School community is one that honors and recognizes individual efforts. Seven Hills remains a brave and honest learning environment inspired by dedicated faculty, talented students, and a caring community. – Debbie Reed
42
The day that I interviewed was the !rst day I had ever set foot in Cincinnati, and from that moment, the Seven Hills community welcomed me as it does everyone. They took in a stranger and made me feel welcomed.
Among my fondest memories are the bon!res at Homecoming attended by students across the grades, faculty, parents, and alumni; basketball games in a steamy gym on winter evenings; the winter choral concerts; the art exhibits in the DAC; morning meetings in the Commons; and the sheer joy of students at the Doherty Carnival or May Fete at Lotspeich.
Each of my seven years as Head of School was !lled with purpose, dedication, and vision. The success of our capital campaigns and overall development was made possible because, as successor to Peter Briggs, I was handed a strong foundation. While I handled many physical and infrastructural changes under my leadership, I also placed my focus on developing a school that would honor our excellent students, faculty, and families.
During my time at Seven Hills, we renovated and constructed spaces that the school long deserved and that re"ected the quality of the program. Achieving a plan of this scope
a building could leak. At times the water would surge up from the foundation at the same time that water would be trickling down through cracks. I used to describe it by saying the building was “melting.”
By 2002, Seven Hills’ enrollment had grown by 100 students, we had the addition of Haile Hall on our Doherty Campus, a beautiful new arts space in Donovan Arts Center, a thriving new Upper School, a !rst-time centralized database launched by our technology team and Robert Horne, more parking spaces, and extensive landscaping throughout our campuses.
Through all of those changes, the foundational excellence has remained the same: Seven Hills is transformative and intellectual. The teachers are brilliant at what they do and the school community is one that honors and recognizes individual efforts. The curriculum continues to encourage students’ creativity. Seven Hills remains a brave and honest learning environment inspired by dedicated faculty, talented students, and a caring community.
demonstrated the strength of the administrative team, the boldness of the Board, and the abiding affection of the school community.
Each physical space had dramatic need. When it came time to discuss the Upper School, we !rst thought we would renovate. But after conversations with Board Chair Steve Black, chair of the campaign Lee Carter, and subsequent conversations with the facilities committee headed by Tory Parlin, we said we should just build. It took a lot of courage to say that, but we had the courage. We employed the expertise of people like Lawsie Coler and others. So much was accomplished because of the strength and care of The Seven Hills School Board.
With the needs of our physical plant came many memories and a little humor as well. I will never forget the raccoon that fell through the ceiling in the main of!ce or students who showed up in my of!ce to tell me icicles were forming inside David Abineri’s classroom in the old Upper School building. There were other striking memories as well: Before we built Haile Hall on the Doherty Campus, the former preschool building was leaking in every possible way

“Seven Hills teachers always challenged you to push yourself a little harder and make yourself the best person you could be, and I’m still
bene!ting from that value they instilled in me.”
“Diane Kruer encouraged me endlessly to pursue art and even developed an independent study curriculum for my many free periods
senior year to prepare me for art school. Without her support … art may have remained a hobby.“

“The community was inclusive, a place where each child was celebrated for something, and values were more than words on a page.”
“David Abineri’s and Linda Ford’s in"uence through the Upper School math and science departments shaped me into the successful aerospace design engineer that I have become today.”
Stephen Kent

The last decade has been a time of rapid growth for Seven Hills as we have worked together to enact the ambitious vision outlined in the Strategic Plans of 2003 and 2008. The focus of both plans was on: increasing diversity; sustaining the strength of the teaching IDFXOW\ UHÀQLQJ WKH FXUULFXOXP WR SUHSDUH RXU VWXGHQWV IRU Drapidly-changing global community; and, in the wake of the recession, rebuilding enrollment while operating the school as cost-effectively as possible. – Christopher P. Maintaining ExcellenceOne of the great challenges of the decade, and particularly the last !ve years, has been the retirement of a generation of iconic teachers who had long been the soul of this school. The successful completion of the Critical Assets Campaign, which added more than $15 million to the school’s endowment, provided the resources Seven Hills needed to attract and retain the next generation of superlative teachers. That endowment allowed for more competitive compensation for faculty, and more proactive investment in professional development and curriculum innovation.
To prepare our students even more fully for the new challenges of an increasingly competitive global community, the faculty has put greater emphasis, over the last decade, on teaching methods that foster critical thinking, collabora-tion, and the application of knowledge to meaningful problem solving. New courses have been developed in global issues, Chinese, environmental science, engineering, computer science, digital journalism, and time-based media. The introduction of a new one-to-one iPad program in grades six through 12 has given students greater access to online information; a new double-period teaching schedule in upper and middle schools has provided more time for inquiry-based learning, research, and problem-solving. In addition, the school has funded more than 150 curriculum innovation grants to incentivize teachers to design new instructional units to foster future-
operating the school as cost effectively as possible. We have realized substantial savings in healthcare, insurance, and energy costs, in order to devote a larger share of our resources to mission-critical programming.
Our Next StepsThe Strategic Plan of 2013 builds on the accomplishments of the last decade: sustaining the strength of the faculty, enriching our innovative and future-focused curriculum, and maintaining a diverse learning community.
It calls for more “real world” experiential learning through community partnerships – career exploration, service learning, and entrepreneurial and leadership opportunities and for nurturing individual talents by guiding students toward opportunities to specialize, both here at school and beyond. Finally, the plan calls for signi!cant facilities enhancements: a new Middle School building to support inquiry-based learning and a new auditorium to enrich our burgeoning performing arts program and a speakers program to expose students and Seven Hills families to thought leaders from our community and beyond.
Throughout its history, Seven Hills has been blessed with superb volunteer leadership and dedicated supporters. It is very exciting to be part of a community so deeply committed to continuous improvement!
focused learning. Seven Hills has also made dramatic progress in enhancing the uniquely inclusive culture of this community. Students of color now make up 30 percent of our student population, almost double the percentage just 10 years ago. We have also trebled the size of our tuition assistance budget. Seven Hills has become the destination school for families, from more than 65 zip codes, who value our warm and inclusive community.
After reaching a record high of 1,069 students in 2004-05, our enrollment fell to 957 in 2009-10, in the wake of the recession. Rebuilding to our present enrollment of 1,040 has involved several interrelated efforts. The adoption of a new mission statement, the drafting of a Portrait of a Seven Hills Graduate, a new Statement of Educational Philosophy, and the Seven Hills Method documents, and the redesign of our marketing and retention strategies have enabled us to articulate, even more clearly, the de!ning characteristics of this school. In addition, Seven Hills has launched two new programs for younger children: Beginnings, a preschool experience for children ages 12 to 36 months, and a new pre-kinder-garten program for two-year-olds. In May, we broke ground on the Nellie Leaman Taft Early Childhood Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the learning needs of our youngest students.
Over the last decade, school leaders have worked hard to slow the rate of tuition growth by
