ON ONE FOOT
The Spirit of ’76 – Just Do It!
The new year offers us a chance to foster our own “Spirit of ’76” here at TBE, 5776, that is, or, in Hebrew, תשעו If you reverse two of the letters you get the word תעשוTa’asu, which is the command in second person plural, “Do!” It’s reminiscent of the Nike slogan, circa Michael Jordan, “Just do it!” So the new year, this year of “Do!” reminds us that Judaism is a religion of “Do!” Yes, we talk. Quite a bit, in fact. And we think. Often we overthink. But what matters most is not the talking or the thinking. It’s the doing that counts. It’s not about “To be or not to be” - Hamlet, after all, is not kosher. Jewish weddings end not in a pronouncement but in an action, the breaking of a glass. We are people of the book, true, but also people of shuk. We are a people of action (and in the case of the shuk, transaction). So let’s ask ourselves what we need to simply do over the coming year. What have we been ruminating about? What have we been putting off? Maybe it’s been that chance to reconcile with someone, or to become more involved in Jewish learning or prayer. Maybe it’s about volunteering to help someone who is shut-in with weekly shopping, or reading to a child. Maybe it’s about taking a more active interest in Israel, or planning to going there. Whatever it is, let’s make this coming year the year to “Just Do it!” We’re going to be doing LOTS of things here this year. You’ll see more about them over the coming weeks and in the pages of this bulletin. We in the Hammerman family will be celebrating a real simcha, if all goes well. This summer our dog Crosby turned 13, and at our annual Sukkah Open House this year, on Sunday, October 4 from noon to 1:30 pm, we’re going to be celebrating his Bark Mitzvah along with all his friends, the pets of TBE. We’ll be doing a blessing of the animals – fittingly, on a day when our Christian neighbors are celebrating the feast of St. Francis and their own animal blessing. Sukkot is a perfect time to reflect upon our companions who share the fragile flimsy home known as earth, and who share the precarious predicament known as mortality. After the fun is over at my house, at 3:00 pm, the Interfaith Council is putting together something never done before, to take place at the Stamford Arboretum: An Interfaith Interspecies Blessing – so that all creatures, great and small, Jewish, Christian, Tabby or Great Dane, might celebrate our common good fortune, and together we shall bark “AMEN.” So bring your pets over to the Hammerman Sukkah on October 4 at noon. Have them “sit” and “stay” a while. For if there is one thing our pets teach us, at least if they are not cows, it’s that rumination is for ruminants. For dogs, cats, rabbits, iguanas, humans and tropical fish, it’s all about those Nikes. Warm wishes for a sweet and healthy new year from Mara, Ethan, Dan and myself. Let’s join together to usher in the Spirit of ‘76... 5776!

My family and I wish you a Happy, Healthy New Year, filled with many sounds of music, community and love. As we enter the High Holidays, I invite you to take time to reflect on your life, personal time and community time and join us here at Beth El. We are very fortunate that Uri Sharlin will be joining us as the main musician for the High Holidays. Uri spent many years directing music at B’nai Jeshurun in Manhattan. He is an established performer who recently performed with Natalie Merchant on her tour. I am looking forward to praying with our choir members, more guest musicians and all of you. Please feel free to raise your voices in song and prayer whenever your heart desires. It’s been a wonderful year of transition and I would love to thank you for your help and support. It is truly appreciated. I am entering my second year with lots of excitement and I am looking forward to many wonderful times together. Please let me know if you or a member of your family sings or plays an instrument. I am always in search of musicians and singers. Please let me know if you would like to support music (in services and non-service occasions). There is a music fund set for those purposes and I would like to see our music program grow and become a center of Jewish music/versatile music in our area. Special services last year were exciting and I would love to see them continue. Another exciting journey will be the Cantors Assembly mission to Spain. In July 2016, my colleagues around the country, joined by congregants, will be taking a trip to Spain to attend our annual convention learning, concertizing and traveling together as a big community. THE HAZZAN’S VOICE
We are in the month of Elul, a time of preparation for the High Holy Days. It is a time to focus our thoughts on how we will approach the prayers and music of the services. Rabbi Abraham Kook, the first Ashkenazic chief rabbi of the Land of Israel gives us guidelines as how we individually may deal with the beautiful music.
There is one who sings the songs of one’s own life, and within finds everything, full spiritual satisfaction. There is another who sings the song of his people. He leaves the inner circle of his individual self, because he finds it without sufficient breadth, without an idealistic basis. He aspires toward the heights, and he attaches himself with a gentle love to the community of Israel. Together with her, the community of Israel, he sings her songs. He feels grieved in her afflictions and delights in her hopes. There is another who reaches toward more distant realms, going beyond the boundary of Israel to sing the song of humanity. Her spirit extends to the wider vistas of the majority of humanity in general, and its noble essence, aspiring toward humanity’s general goal, and looking forward toward its higher perfection. From this source of life she draws the subjects of meditation and study, aspirations and visions. Then there is one who rises toward wider horizons, until he links himself with all existence, with all G-d’s creatures, with all worlds, and he sings with all of them. It is of one such as this that tradition has said that whoever sings a portion of song each day is assured of having a share in the world to come. And then there is one who rises with all these songs together in one ensemble, and then they all join their voices. Together they sing their songs of joy and gladness, sounds of jubilation and celebration, sounds of ecstasy and holiness. The song of the self, the song of the people, the song of humanity, the song of the world - all merge within, at all times, every hour. And this comprehensiveness rises to become the song of holiness, the song of G-d, the song of Israel, in its full strength and beauty, in its full authenticity and greatness. The name “Israel” stands for “Shir El,” the song of G-d. It is a simple song, a double song, a triple song, a fourfold song.
My best wishes to you of Temple Beth El for a Shana Tova, a good year. And may you all sing the songs of the Holy Days as a community of one, in whatever key you are comfortable in
singing. It all rises together in harmony as a chorus of one.

MEMORIAL LECTURE
Officials representing the State of Israel often focus on security needs, and for good reason. But focusing exclusively on the conflict with Israel’s neighbors distracts people from exploring some of the conflicts that rock Israeli society from within, such as women’s rights, religious pluralism, racism against minorities and struggles for freedom of conscience.
Anat Hoffman is a sabra born on a kibbutz near Jerusalem. Her mother, Varda Blechman, was the first child born at Kibbutz Ramat Rachel (Rachel’s Heights). Her American-born father, Charles Weiss, served as a Voice of America correspondent in Israel. She attended the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. She also excelled as a competitive athlete, becoming a champion swimmer. She competed in the Maccabiah Games, winning titles in nine events.
In 1974, after she completed her service in the Israel Defense Forces, she left for the United States to study. She graduated from UCLA in 1980 with a B.A. in Psychology. While at UCLA she was connected to Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life and started the Israeli Student Organization. She was exposed to Reform Judaism and realized for the first time that Judaism was not limited to Orthodoxy. She later pursued graduate study at Bar Ilan University.
Returning to Israel, she became an activist for religious pluralism, becoming involved in the founding of Kol Haneshema, a Reform or progressive synagogue in Jerusalem. She served on the Jerusalem City Council from 1988 to 2002, representing the Civil Rights and Peace Movement.

MEN’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The Men’s Club of Temple Beth El is proud to award the Edward J. Kaplin Memorial Scholarship to two very deserving recipients. This year we had a great group of applications, and our task of selecting one or two recipients was not easy. The applicants came from schools throughout Fairfield County, although the two winners are from families strongly connected to Temple Beth El.
Our first winner, Jenna Plotzky, is a graduate of Westhill High School, and was named one of the top teens to watch by Stamford Magazine. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Spanish and Business National Honor Societies. She has also been a madricha in our Religious School, a board member of Kulanu, and has been on the March of the Living. Not one to be content with dozens of activities, she has also been on the indoor and outdoor track teams for four years, and captain of the Westhill math team. She is the daughter of Susan and Mark Plotzky. Jenna will be attending college next year at Bentley University.
Our second award winner, Rachel Steinmetz, is no stranger to Temple Beth El. She is a graduate of Stamford High School, where she has been involved backstage in the school’s theatrical offerings in technical production, for which she won the Connecticut Drama Association Stage Manager Award. She has been in the Kuriansky Teen Tzedakah Corp and Speak Up for Israel, in addition to Kulanu, Stamford’s supplemental Hebrew high school program, and The March of the Living. She’s also been a volunteer at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, The Friendship Circle and the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council. She is the daughter of Karen Steinmetz and Marty Steinmetz. She will be attending Ithaca College in the fall.

Sisterhood is committed to supporting Torah Fund sponsored by Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Proceeds are raised by selling lovely cards and pins to support the Jewish Theological Seminary and other seminaries in LA, Jerusalem and Buenos Aires. The Torah Fund Campaign has raised more than $90 million since its inception.

This is our first formal communication since the Hope in Motion Walk this past June, which was extremely successful thanks to your participation and generous contributions. Our Reyut volunteers remained active throughout the summer providing our usual support to those ongoing established recipients, as well as to a handful of new people who reached out to us. One individual, who is legally blind, has been befriended by several on our committee and is extremely grateful for the sunshine we have brought into her life. In addition, our hospital Shabbat bag team delights in continuing to bring joy into the lives of our Jewish hospitalized patients. We also wish to acknowledge the generosity of our Mitzvah Garden ladies, Meryl Silverstein and Harriet Weinstein, who offer their beautiful flowers, which we create into lovely arrangements for our appreciative friends.
On Wednesday, October 14, we look forward to an exciting educational agenda this coming year beginning with a presentation from Edward Schuster, MD, a highly popular Stamford cardiologist and fellow member of Temple Beth El. U.S.-ISRAEL RELATIONS AT A CROSSROADS Featuring Dr. Yitzhak Brudny
Dr. Yitzhak Brudny, a TBE member and Religious School parent, is a senior lecturer in the faculty of social sciences at Hebrew University. His specialty is nationalism and ethnic conflict in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He received his PhD from Princeton and is author of, among other publications, “Reinventing Russia.”
During a week when Congress is set to vote on the Iran Deal, we are fortunate to gain the insights of this renowned scholar before he returns to Jerusalem for the fall semester.

Temple Beth El proudly introduced the newly published High Holiday Prayer Book, “Mahzor Lev Shalem,” that we now use on the High Holidays.
Dedications in honor of a special simcha or in memory of a loved one or a special friend are available! Each book will be inscribed with your dedication on a colorful bookplate on the inside front cover.
For $50: One prayer book for your personal use or donate one to the Temple
For $250: Six prayer books will be donated to the Temple
For $500: Twelve prayer books will be donated to the Temple
For $1,000: Twenty-one prayer books will be donated to the Temple. Four books will be given to your family
For $2,500: Sixty prayer books will be donated to the Temple Four prayer books will be given to your family
For $5,000: One hundred twenty-five prayers books will be donated to the Temple Six prayer books will be given to your family

The JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest are coming to Stamford! August 7 – 12, 2016
What are the JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest?
The JCC Maccabi Games are an Olympic-style sporting and cultural event for Jewish teens from all over the world. JCC Maccabi ArtsFest is a weeklong arts experience for creative Jewish teens featuring workshops in a variety of specialties with some of the leading artists in each field.
Athletes and artists participate in competition and workshops while also incorporating community service, social activities and themes of Jewish heritage, community and Israel.
Participants It takes the entire greater Jewish community to pull off an event of this magnitude! The 2016 JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest in Stamford will involve more than: 1,000 athletes and artists, and 250 coaches from more than 30 North American cities, Israel and other international locations (Local Athletes must be between the ages of 12-16 and ArtsFest participants must be between the ages of 12-17 by July 31, 2016.) 1,100 Local Volunteers - 400 Host Families - 500 Visiting Families - 8,000 Spectators
