AROUND THE CHURCH

EVANGELISM COMMITTEE

September is such a beautiful month. God made

our environment so colorful. Take time to enjoy

God’s creations.

RALLY DAY. September 7 is a great day to get back

into the church and Sunday School routine.

SENIOR PROFILE. We are continually looking for

senior members to showcase in our monthly Epistle,

and our historian book for the church. Criteria is

simple, age 80+ and a member of the church. Call me

at 410-374-6436 to nominate someone.

This month please enjoy learning bout Jean Linder,

the profile of whom was written by Audrey Byrd.

Jean is very appreciative of our Evangelism committee

for our prayers, gifts, cards, and visitations.

BAKING. We enjoyed baking good for the peach

festival.

HELPING. It was fun helping at the various sections

of the Peach Festival. Whether you were an ice cream

dipper, a waitress, helped make sandwiches, and much

more, together we had fun, even with the clean-up.

Hope you met someone new or reacquainted with an

old friend, had fellowship together, and shared God’s

love.

EYEGLASS COLLECTION. We continue to

collect used eye glasses for our needy friends. It is a

wonderful way to recycle while being helpful to

others. Place them in the caring corner marked for

eyeglasses in the Fellowship Hall. Our goal for 2014

is 100 pair.

NEXT CHAPTERS. If you know someone who

graduates in 2015, we don’t want to miss anyone! Let

the church secretary or me know (410-374-6436)

INVITE. Please invite, welcome, accept and support

all people into the fellowship of our church family.

Continue to use your gifts to serve the Lord. Anyone

who wants to join our committee, we would love to

have you join us. Be at peace. Serve the Lord. –

Loretta Basler

SUNDAY SCHOOL 2014-2015!

"God's Work. Our Hands" Sunday (The day formerly known as Rally Day Sunday.)

What is God's Work. Our Hands. Sunday? "The

dedicated day of service is an opportunity to celebrate

who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in

America - a church freed in Christ to serve and love our

neighbor. Join with other congregations of this church as we gather to put

our faith into action and serve communities across the country.”

our neighbors by participating in service projects. We will be making

We will also have a station to make cards for our shut-in members and will

wrap shoe boxes to prepare for "Operation Christmas Child."

complete the projects. Our goal is to complete 50 of each of the kits!

for that day. Thanks for your support and we will see you on September 7th

AUTOMATED

DEFIBRILLATION

St. John’s has in place the ultimate

benefits package: a Heart Safe Program.

The aim of this program is to make early

automated external defibrillation

immediately available in a cardiac

emergency.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen

anywhere, anytime. SCA is usually

caused by an electrical malfunction that

makes the heart quiver ineffectively.

CPR is not enough. It is a temporary

measure that helps maintain blood flow

to the brain. A lifesaving pulse of

electricity - defibrillation - is the only

treatment and must be delivered quickly

to restore the heart’s normal rhythm.

Because every minute counts when

sudden cardiac arrest strikes, St. John’s

has placed a LIFEPAK automated

external defibrillator (AED) under the

First Aid Box right outside the

Fellowship Hall . Please look to the

newsletter and your bulletins for a

training announcement.

Everyone of us at St. John’s can make a

lifesaving difference in medical

emergency by immediately calling

emergency response (911). This vital

first step will quickly send trained

responders to the scene.

Please join me in spreading the word to

members and guests and anyone else

who frequents the church about our

Heart Safe Program. It’s one of the

many ways St. John’s strives to make

our church safe and healthier for our

families.

Sincerely,

Milton S. Zepp

egina (Jean) Linder was born on December 7,

1927 in Ohio. She was the oldest of seven

children, two brothers and four sisters followed.

She completed high school, but coming from a poor

family she was unable to attend college. After

graduating from high school she went to work at the

May Company Department Store, which later became

Stewart’s. It was there she met her husband. One of

her favorite things she enjoyed growing up was rolling

skating. She and her future husband enjoyed skating,

also –both while dating, and

after being married.

Her husband worked for

Bethlehem Steel in Ohio, so

when that company opened

a plant in Maryland, they

followed suit and moved to

Elkridge. While living there, they attended a

Methodist church. She and her husband were married

47 years when he passed away.

While living in Elkridge they had neighbors by the

name of Bakers and Jean’s son Tom married their

daughter. When the Bakers decided to move to

Manchester Manor Senior Living, Jean decided to

move there also, since her home was getting to much

for her to handle. The Bakers and Jean moved to

Manchester Manor where they were introduced to St.

John’s Church by members of St. John’s who lived

there. When asked what attracted her to St. John’s,

she replied, “The friendliness

of the people, who are so

kind, they are just like

family. And you can’t forget

the food. St. John’s has

really good food and lots of

it.” Her favorite hymn is How Great Thou Art. She

attended St. John’s until her health declined.

She has two sons, and currently resides at Lorien in

Mt. Airy to be closer to them. The proudest

accomplishment in her life is her family. In addition

to her sons, she has one grandson, and three great-

granddaughters ages 11, 7 and 6. You can tell how

important her family is to her by looking around in her

room at the many pictures. She talks with a great

sense of pride about her family. When she talks about

her great-granddaughters, she says, “They send me

over the moon when they visit. It makes me so

happy!”

Recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease,

ambulating has become very difficult. So she enjoys

reading romance books and watching romance movies

on television, doing word searches and cross word

puzzles. She loves company and is very appreciative

of visits from church members and of Pastor bringing

her communion.

Jean we are very to have you as one of our “St. John’s

Seniors.” - Submitted by Audrey Byrd.

A Tribute to My Church Family

Following my recent surgery, brief hospital stay, and in-

home recuperation, I’ve had time to ponder and appreciate

our(my) wonderful church family.

Your prayers, phone calls, visits, greeting cards, personal

notes, and genuine concern mean so much.

Many of you remember back in late 1974 I had a six week

stay in a New York City hospital. One day, a stranger ap-

peared in my room and informed me he worked in the mail

room and wanted to meet me because of the volume of

cards and mail I had received.

“Are you a politician? What do you do for a living?” he

asked.

I simply explained I come from a small town 30 miles out-

side of Baltimore, Maryland and that most of the mail

comes from members and friends of my wonderful church

family. I felt so humbled and blessed.

Now, 40 years later, my feelings have not changed. Actu-

ally, I am older, wiser, and appreciate and love you—my

church family—more than ever. A special “Thank You” to

each of you.

In Christian Love,

Dale H. Miller

P.S. Thank you Pastor Kristin, members of our church

council, and other volunteers for helping with those little

tasks I have enjoyed doing over the years. I hope to be

back soon.

Stewart and I would like to thank the members of St. John’s for your cards, emails and facebook comments congratulating us on becoming grandparents. God has truly blessed our family with such a beautiful granddaughter. We thank all of you for thinking about us. Elizabeth and her parents are doing fine. She is growing everyday and she is such joy to have in our family. God bless all of you!

Stewart and Linda Sterner

The Christian Outreach Committee would like to thank the members of St. John’s for supporting our “Back to School” campaign for The Shepherd’s Staff. The

Shepherd’s Staff was able to help hundreds of Carroll County students prepare their new school year with school supplies, clothes, shoes, and haircuts, etc.

THANK YOU to all who worked to make the Peach

Festival a success this year and to

all who came and supported

the Festival by purchasing the

food and drink items. St. John's is blessed with your continued support

and your willingness to share your time, talents and financial

resources.

REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS

13

St. John’s is a service oriented Church that is blessed by the willingness of the members of the Congregation to

serve in many different ways. The Leadership Team needs your help on Sunday, September 14, to identify the

ways that each person can serve that will contribute to the continued growth within our Church. An itemized

list of the volunteer opportunities at St. John’s will be given to each person. You place a check mark by the

volunteer job(s) that you would like to do. The purpose is to give each person an opportunity to be involved in

the operation of our Church. Every volunteer job is important to the life of the Congregation. The Leadership

Team will compile the data and give it to the appropriate Chairperson who will follow up with you. St. John’s

is composed of people who are truly God’s hands on earth.
