FAIR THANKS!!

Thank you to all of those who helped in the Indoor Department this year. There are far too many to name, but thank you to all of the 4-Hers who helped from the Friday before the fair all the way through the fair. Thank you for all of the adult help during those same times. Without your assistance, it couldn’t be done.

Thank you to all of the MANY judges that we had. It is not an easy task to judge and we are grateful for the time that you gave us.

Senior 4-Hers, we would love to have more of you help with the Indoor process. It’s really quite fun and you learn a lot about what goes on and how to get the Indoor area ready to open on Monday afternoon. You also learn who the champions are

before everyone else knows, but you keep it a secret. Let Ms. Sally know if you would like to help next year.

NATIONAL 4-H WEEK- OCTOBER 7-13

Ok clubs, lets show some enthusiasum for National 4-H Week! This is an annual celebration of 4-H during the first full week of October. During National 4-H Week we showcase the great things that 4-H offers young people and highlights the incredible 4-H youth who work every day to make a positive impact on their club, community, country and world. Please call the office and let us know where it is located so that it can be judged.

The QAC 4-H All Stars will be giving cash prizes for our displays around the county. There are the 3 categories of “3D”, “Flat” and “Tri-fold”. Please let the Extension Office know where your display is and in which of the 3 categories it is in. They need to be in place by October 7th.

Speaking of National 4-H Week….the Lion’s Den in Centreville is helping us promote National 4-H Week….so the winning club with the highest point accumulation will receive 15% discount on any purchase on Saturday, October 27th!! To receive this discount you MUST show your 4-H membership card. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Lion’s Den, please make sure you do! It is an awesome ice cream and eatery restaurant with lots of local

school history. Way back in the 70’s… you weren’t born yet, there was a small restaurant in the same spot with the same name where kids would stop by and grab a burger and relax and play some video games after

school. A HUGE THANK YOU TO LIONS DEN FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF OUR PROGRAM!

HOLIDAY WORKSHOP

Plans are underway for the popular Holiday Workshop where we make lots of fun crafts. It will be held on December 1st from 9-3 pm at the 4-H Park. Senior 4-H’er and adults are needed to assist with the crafting. Please let us know if you are able to help and if you have ideas for crafts. More information will come later, and the registration form is in the newsletter.

MARYLAND STATE COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES NEEDED!

Queen Anne’s County needs 4-Hers between the ages of 13 -18 to represent us on the Maryland State Council. If you are interested in growing the MD 4-H program and would like to develop your own leadership and life skills, then this is for you! You will meet other 4-Hers from across the state and get to interact in many different ways. Council members meet every other month at College Park and you have an option to conference call for some of those meetings. Members get to participate in many different, enjoyable activities too.

Applications are available on the MD 4-H website and must be transmitted via email by DECEMBER 15, 2018.

4-H’ERS LEARN TO CAN

On July 11th we held a canning workshop for water bath canning. Blake Quillen, Hannah Martin, Aurora Parker and Cameron Carr participated and actually made some awesome Blueberry Spice Jam. (I know it was good because they gave me a jar )

We hope to do some more canning classes in the future. Hopefully more of you will take advantage of the opportunity.

The event serves two main purposes for the Maryland Horse Program. First, it provides an opportunity to recognize 4-H members, volunteers and supporters for their outstanding accomplishments and amazing support. Second, the party is an important fundraising event. Proceeds benefit the Sallie Robertson Memorial 4-H Horse Endowment Fund which helps to underwrite the Maryland 4-H Horse Program. Registration materials and additional information will be available online at: https://extension.umd.edu/4-h/maryland-horsemans-party. KEEP AN EYE OUT - CLUB VISITS…We will be making our annual club visits during the month of September.

When we come, we will be bringing the indoor judging comment sheets for those of you who didn’t get them at the end of the fair. We will also have t-shirts for the exhibitors who did not pick theirs up during the fair.

RECORD BOOKS!!!

We know it’s early….BUT don’t wait until the last second to do them! Record books will be due no later than 4:30 PM on Tuesday January 21, 2019. The papers that you received, or will be receiving, with your fair checks will help you with some of the information on your record sheets.

Remember, your age is as of January 1, 2018 for your 2018 Record Book.

Clovers: You have your own record sheets to fill out. They are available on the QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY 4-H WEBSITE or in paper form in the office, along with guidelines of how to complete your book.

Juniors and Intermediates: You need to fill out a NEW 4-H Summary Record located on the MD 4-H website. All of your past summary records need to remain in your book, but everything else from last year’s book is removed. The guideline is also available online on our county website.

There is a NEW MD General 4-H Project Record there as well. This new general project record replaces the old QAC Non-Animal Record form. This new project form is ONLY used for projects that are NOT animals. The ANIMAL FORMS may be found on both the county and the state websites.

Seniors: You MUST do a portfolio which is the current essay topic and your resume. It is your choice to add the traditional record book to your portfolio.

There is information about these on our County Website.

This year’s essay topic for seniors is: "Describe your most significant 4-H experiences and how they contributed to your personal growth as shown by attitude, insights, and life skills gained." All guidelines and project forms are also available at the Extension Office.

TRIM A TREE CONTEST

This holiday 4-H activity is designed for everyone who participates to have FUN and bring happiness to others during the holiday season. As a “club”, members use their creative energy to construct “handmade” decorations for a Christmas Tree. The trees should be placed around the community and remain there during the holiday season. Trees are judged for neatness and ORIGINALITY and the “primary objective” is to share some holiday

joy with those who need it most! (Think about assisted living facilities, nursing homes, etc.) This is ONLY a county club contest, but individuals are encouraged to display their own tree around the community as a service project. Trees should be in place by MONDAY, DECEMBER 3RD. They will be judged during the next two weeks. Clubs need to complete the entry form and return it to our office…NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 30TH!!

MARYLAND 4-H VOLUNTEER AND TEEN FORUM (ACTIVITIES FOR 4-H’ERS AND CLOVERS TOO)

The 2018 4-H Teen & Volunteer Forum will take place November 16-18 at the Princess Royale in Ocean City. This weekend event is designed to unite volunteers and teens from around Maryland for engaging in training and networking opportunities. Whether you come for a day or stay for the weekend, we hope you come to Learn by Doing in order to help the Maryland 4-H Program make the best better! The whole family is welcome to come and learning tracks are provided for youth from 5-11 in the Clover, Junior and Intermediate tracks that span the breadth of 4-H programming; from the Agriculture Camp, Clubs to STEM activities. There is something for everyone! Registration materials and additional information will be available soon online at: https://extension.umd.edu.4-h-teen-and-volunteer-forum
