The annual National Student Survey ratings have been released. And I’m pleased to let you know that The Open University remains the top university in Wales for student satisfaction.

The results show that 92% of OU in Wales students declare themselves to be “satisfied with quality of their course”, with The OU being the only university in Wales to score above 90%.

This is the seventh successive year that students at The Open University in Wales are more satisfied with the quality of their higher education than those at any other university in Wales. This achievement highlights the OU’s strength in providing high quality, flexible and supported courses.

Across the UK, The Open University was rated third. Of the 18,000 OU students who were surveyed, 94 per cent agreed that their course was intellectually stimulating, 92 per cent stated that they received detailed comments on work submitted and 90 per cent of students agreed the course was well organised and run smoothly.

The OU in Wales is now the largest provider of part-time undergraduate study in Wales.

The OU in Wales will be at the Network meetings across Wales next week.

Wales TUC need to know why you’re opposing the UK Government cuts.

First of all, thank you if you attended either the Wales TUC Protest in the Park, the March for the Alternative or any of the organised protests in Wales in recent months. They have all sent a powerful message to the UK Government about the strength of our opposition to their cuts. If you were there, there tell us why. If, like many, you were unable to be there on the day, we hope this new initiative will give you an opportunity to get your voice heard.

While we are clearly winning the arguments that the cuts are wrong, the UK Government are as determined as ever to drive their policy agenda forward regardless of the harm it will do to our public services, our economy and our communities. In order to take the campaign to the next level we’re asking for your individual support to show them why we are right.

Tell us, in just a few sentences, why you’ll be supporting the Wales TUC campaign for a better way. Tell us your story. The more personal to you, the better. Send us your contribution in an email along with a photo, your name, where you’re from and a little bit of background about yourself to [email protected] and put ‘a better way’ in the subject line. We will then post your stories on our website.

We hope to build a powerful picture of how the cuts are affecting all of us and why they must be stopped and we need your support to do it. Please circulate to friends and colleagues who would want to send a clear message to the UK Coalition Government. Kind regards, Chris Christopher Hartwell [email protected] Policy & Campaigns Officer

A New microsite will help vulnerable workers secure a fair deal at work. The TUC has launched a new microsite to help people find out more about their basic rights at work.

Basic Rights @ Work will introduce vulnerable workers – people who have little knowledge of their employment rights, who find it hard to access advice and who do not have the ability to protect themselves against abuses of their rights – to information about employment rights in the UK and how to enforce these rights through statutory enforcement bodies.

I am writing to invite you to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust's 11th Memorial Lecture on the evening of October 4th 2011 in the Jarvis Hall at RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London W1.

This year's Lecture is delivered by Stirling prize winning architect and global phenomenon Zaha Hadid and will be chaired by RIBA President Angela Brady. Through her work around the world and her experiences in practice, Zaha will reflect on design and diversity in an ever more competitive global market place.

As you are aware, the Trust was established in my son's name. Although Stephen had his dream of becoming an architect cruelly taken away, we hope to ensure that other young people are given every opportunity to fulfil their aspirations. Through our bursary programme we aim to help young people, in the UK and internationally, achieve their ambitions of working in construction, design and architecture. http://www.unionlearn.org.uk/about/learn-4196-f0.cfm

People make the decision to learn Welsh for a variety of reasons, some even accidently as we read recently. Getting started is one thing, but what is it that makes people carry on? When they start to feel that they are making progress, they've had a few exciting first conversations "in the wild" or over Skype, what then? What ambitions or goals have you set for yourself? What do YOU want from your Welsh? After the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham, people's thoughts started turning to next year in the Vale of Glamorgan, and Catrin posed the question - what do you want to achieve from your Welsh over the next 12 months? Responding to the CBI's press release on regulatory approaches to training, unionlearn policy officer Richard Blakeley said:

"The CBI's intervention is very welcome. There is a very important debate to be had about maximising employer investment in training. Whilst we may not agree with all of the CBI's recommendations, I think there is plenty of room for debate and consensus. We would welcome discussion on the most effective way to introduce occupational standards and licences to practice. Unionlearn is actively working towards co-investment schemes in training. It must be remembered that ten million workers miss out on training and lower qualified workers are four times less likely to receive training." NOTES: Unionlearn is holding a conference on December 1, 2011 on the subject of regulation of training, considering union experience and views on licence to practice, sectoral levies and tax relief for training

A new website, www.higherlearningatwork.org has been launched to help learners discover the opportunities available to get better qualifications.

There are diagnostic tools to see if you are ready for degree-level studies: traditional entry requirements may not be necessary, your life and work experience will count. There are courses which have bite-sized modules so that you can combine learning with your work and family commitments and bring your knowledge up to date.

Unionlearn is now one of the leading organisations providing information to working people, who are looking for advice on getting access to higher-level studies.

The website will be useful to you if you are a union member or a rep. It is also useful to all other working adults, including apprentices, who are interested in moving on to higher-level learning. You will find a range of resources to help you to advise learners. You can check out ways of working with unions to change lives through learning. The site gives access to information about funding available to make your learning more affordable and for union members there may be special discounts and bursaries arranged through your union or unionlearn. National Survey of Adult Skills in Wales, 2010 Commissioned by the Welsh Government to provide updated data on literacy and numeracy. The survey was carried out during 2010, and assessed overall literacy and numeracy skills of adults (aged 16-65) in Wales The surveys were designed as far as was practically possible to replicate similar surveys carried out in 2004/05, in order to consider changes in skills levels.

There has been improvement in literacy levels: 12 per cent of adults were assessed to have Entry Level literacy or below, a decrease from 25 per cent in 2004. 29 per cent of adults were assessed at Level 1 (37 per cent in 2004) and 59 per cent at Level 2 or above (an increase from 38 per cent in 2004).

There is little change in numeracy levels: 51 per cent of adults were assessed to have Entry Level numeracy or below, similar to the 53 per cent in 2004. 29 per cent were assessed at Level 1 (25 per cent in 2004) and 21 per cent at Level 2 or above (22 per cent in 2004).

Literacy and numeracy levels were higher amongst the employed, those with higher levels of household income, those with higher qualifications, and amongst the older age groups.

Speakers include Ann Beynon OBE (EHRC Commissioner and Director BT Wales), Stuart McKenna (Diversity Manager for the Co-operative Group) and Jan Pickles OBE (NSPCC Cymru). Credit union membership in Wales continues to grow, with more than 50,000 members and junior savers enjoying the benefits that belonging to a credit union can bring. Whether you want the flexibility to save what you can when you can, or save regularly to build that ‘nest egg’, then credit unions may be the sensible option for you. Being a member of your local credit union brings many advantages: knowing that your money is safe and secure, backed by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme; the idea of your money is staying within your community to benefit your local area, and the opportunity to apply for a loan at a reasonable, affordable and competitive rate of interest. How to join a credit union? Credit unions exist throughout Wales; you can join a credit union near to where you live or work. To find your nearest credit union, visit www.wales.gov.uk/creditunions or contact the All Wales credit union Helpline on 0800 4960865 (Monday to Friday during normal working hours) or email [email protected]. And don’t forget, many public sector employers offer payroll deduction schemes to make saving with a credit union even easier.

OUR FAVOURITE STORIES – UNIONLEARN CASE STUDIES Union learning reps are the unsung heroines and heroes of industrial relations. They are trained to open doors to learning and training to their colleagues and work with employers to provide time and spaces for study. Here are some of their stories. http://www.unionlearn.org.uk/about/learn-4214-f0.cfm

Do your bit The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and Trades Unions recognise that workplaces with health and safety representatives are safer and healthier as a result. We encourage workers to become involved as safety representatives.

European research suggests that women are under-represented in the health and safety decision-making process. In particular, more women are needed to be safety representatives.

By representing your colleagues you’re playing a vital and rewarding role in helping to make the workplace ‘safe and sound’ for the benefit of all; and making sure that women’s views and experience of workplace health and safety are taken into account.

What will you be doing? Your role will be to keep your colleagues involved in health and safety matters and represent them.

What are the benefits? Your participation as a safety representative will help you, increase your skills and value in the workplace; and help protect your colleagues from health and safety risks

If you are interested in becoming a safety representative and helping to ensure that your workplace is both a safe and healthy place to work, then contact your union.

Find out more from www.hse.gov.uk/involvement/hsrepresentatives.htm
