SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

A smart way to protect your treasures

Think of all the precious, irreplaceable things that you would hate to lose in a burglary or a fire or another flood — grandma’s jewelry, pho-tos of your children, home videos, sentimental family keepsakes. And then there’s the list of replaceable but still important things, like cam-eras, back-up hard drives, legal documents, guns, and passports. None of these things are used every day, but losing them would be painful or inconvenient. There is no reason to risk such losses. In addition to a first-class alarm system, the best precaution that home-owners can take to secure their smaller possessions is a home safe. Properly installed, a home safe is enormously difficult to open or to remove in a short time. They are fire resistant, bug and humidity re-sistant and can be raised a few inches to escape most flood risks.

Over the last few years, home safes — and particularly large gun safes — have become very affordable and provide a lot of space to store hundreds of items. At Costco, for just $600, you can buy a 435-lb, 19-cubic-foot safe with an electronic keypad and 30-minute fire protection that can be easily secured to a wall stud or the floor. And for less than $300, you can buy a knee-high safe with a built-in alarm and a footprint small enough to disguise as a nightstand. None of these are difficult to deliver or install.

The vast majority of burglars do not carry safe-cracking tools when they visit your home. They use what is availa-ble. For example, a safe that is not attached to something larger can be placed on a rug and pulled out of the house. And a large safe in plain view with no security system can, after several hours, be breached.

On a budget? An old refrigerator or freezer can resist a small fire or flood, but it is impossible to secure beyond a hasp and padlock.

Here are some tips when selecting and positioning your new safe: Always anchor the safe to something — a wall stud, the floor, or if nothing else, a large piece of furniture using a thick wire cable. Anchor-ing any safe is critical to its effectiveness.

If possible, never put a safe in the garage. It can be seen every time you open the garage door, and your belongings would prefer a more temperate environment. Hide it in a closet or laundry room, recess it into a wall with a mirror or wall hanging in front of it.

Don’t get too focused on the fire rating. It is very unlikely that your house will catch fire or that 1,500 degrees of intense fire will surround your safe for more than a few minutes. Connect your safe with a wireless contact to your home security sys-tem. It can be programmed to remain armed even when you’re at home.

NEIGHBORHOOD TRAFFIC COMMITTEE UPDATE by Nicole Shah

The concept traffic mitigation plan proposed by Braes Heights, Ayrshire and the City of Houston’s Neighborhood Traffic Program staff has been approved by the Fire Department. There will be a second public meeting on Wednesday, February 17 at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held at Pershing Middle School. The City of Houston will mail residents within the neighborhood a copy of the concept plan and comment card. If you are unable to attend the meeting and wish to comment on the plan, please fill out and return the comment card. A copy of the proposed concept plan can also be found on the BPHA website under Notices and the category Traffic Study. The Department Director of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Plan will review the concept plan, data and public comments, and either approve or disapprove the plan. All approved concept plans must be tested by installing traffic control devices for a minimum of 90 days. If needed after an evaluation period, changes can be proposed by our neighborhood and made. A third public meeting and City Council final approval of the recommended concept plan will occur.

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL by Jessica Evans

Longfellow basketball and cheer teams will be starting on January 23. These teams have been a great opportuni-ty for students to stay active and learn teamwork and leadership skills. On February 5, students will attend the Chinese New Year Performance which in addition to providing exposure to other cultures is also lots of fun and a big hit with the kids! Longfellow will host the annual Family Valentine's Celebration and Dance on Friday February 12. There will be games, music, pictures, food and fun! Congrats to the Longfellow teachers (more than 10) who received funding through Donors Choose to bring more technology into the classroom. This semester, Longfellow will be welcoming student teachers who will start their clinical training at our school. Also, a big thank you to the Seniors from Episcopal High School who spent two weeks at the school as teacher assistants with the magnet teachers. They were a great group and the Longfellow students had so much fun interacting with them. Congrats to Spelling Bee winners Nadra Claire Assad (1st place), Aidan Guidry-Shelton (2nd place), and Ethan Salters (3rd place)! We are so proud of you! Longfellow is currently looking for someone to lead neigh-borhood story time (which is open to neighborhood preschoolers) on a monthly basis. Requires VIPS (Volun-teers in Public Schools) enrollment and background check. If interested, please contact Renee Hawk at [email protected]. Longfellow 5th graders are in the process of raising money for a trip to Austin to visit the University of Texas and the State Capitol. If you know of a business or individual who is interested in contributing, please contact Amy Miller at [email protected]. Wishing everyone a Happy Valentine's Day!

A CONVERSATION WITH HUCKLEBERRY BASH CO-CHAIRS

MADONNA BAUCH AND BRITTANY WEISSER

Q. What is the Huckleberry Bash? A. The Huckleberry Bash is an auction, dinner, and entertainment (adults only) event with the proceeds benefit-ting our wonderful school. This truly amazing evening is tons of fun and our largest fundraiser of the year. This year, we are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of our Literary Development Center with the theme, “Pages from the Past.” This year’s Bash will be held at the Julia Ideson Library, which is a fabulous, historical jewel in downtown Houston on Friday, February 12 at 7 pm. Bash is open to family and friends of Twain students and the entire Braeswood neighborhood. Tickets: http://bidpal.net/huckleberrybash. Q. How will the funds raised at the Bash be used? A. Proceeds from our fundraiser will supplement our operating budget, fund enrichment and educational pro-grams, allow for school improvements, and support both our LDC and International Baccalaureate (IB) World School primary years programs. At the Huckleberry Bash event, we will also have a special segment at the end of the night referred to as "Paddles Up". This part of the night is where we look to our community to put their "paddles up" and contribute money towards one specific goal; this year, that goal is to raise money for the school's multiple libraries (the classroom libraries, LDC libraries, and for our main library). Q. What can I bid on at the Bash? A. Auction Preview: February 4 from 3:30 to 7 pm and February 5 from 7:30 to 8:30 am. Join us in the cafete-ria to preview all the items that will be auctioned off at this year’s Huckleberry Bash. Online Auction: Opens February 5 at 9 am and closes February 12 at 3 pm. Anyone in the community can participate! This year, we will offer all silent auction items online on the Bash website: http://bidpal.net/huckleberrybash. You can send the link to friends, grandparents, neighbors, aunts, uncles, and anyone else you choose. February 12: Anyone who attends the auction will be able to continue bidding through the close of the event; those who do not buy tickets will be held to the highest bid they have entered. Mobile bidding only at event. Class creations, child socials, adult socials, teacher socials, school perks and treasures, big board, and live auction items will only be available to those attending the event. Important Upcoming Dates February 4, 5:30 to 7:30 pm - Art Night February 10, 8:15 am - PTO Meeting, All parents welcome! February 12, 7 pm - Huckleberry Bash at the Julia Ideson Library

GARDEN OF THE MONTH by Jackie Addington

TIPS ABOUT CLOGGED SANITARY SEWERS by E. Frizell

Recently, the neighborhood has been experiencing clogged sanitary sewer lines which causes some sewer manholes to overflow and expel raw sewage onto people's driveways, sidewalks, streets, and street gutters. This is NOT rainwater -- it is RAW SEWAGE and is a potential danger! Once a sewer overflows, then the raw sewage can flow directly to our bayous and then Galveston Bay. Not to mention, who wants themselves or their pets to be walking through raw sewage? The sewer overflows are caused by the items below being flushed down toilets and sinks. The grease, oils, rags, wipes, and other products create large balls of waste that clogs our sewer lines and cause the sewer overflows. These items are the common enemies to our sewer system:

Cooking grease & oil Meat fats

Shortening, butter & margarine Coffee grounds & filters

Paper towels Baby Wipes (including the “flushable” wipes)

Baby Diapers Feminine hygiene products

Hair Chewing gum

Plastics

Do not flush the above items down your sinks or toilets! Fats, oils, and grease (“FOG”) should be poured into heat resistant bags or containers (used cans, glass jars) which can then be thrown away with your binned trash. Scrape fats, grease, and food from plates and cooking utensils into your trash. If you have a garbage disposal, it should NOT be used for disposing of FOG. For more information, visit the web site corralthegrease.org.

Yard of the month for February is the home of Cathy and Andrew Civitello and is located at 3530Tartan Lane. Pic-tured is the home taken during the holi-days and a reminder of how lovely our neighborhood appeared this past holiday season. This very beautiful craftsman style home was draped with garlands and lights along the major architectural fea-tures. Large wreaths, garlands, and bows hung from the wrought iron gates and rails of the front porch. Three large live oak trees and crape myrtle set off this attractive yard which is appealing year round but was an "attention grabber" this holiday season.

Here in Houston the economy has cooled considerably—a result of falling oil prices. I hear concern in the voices of those inquiring about our services. They are understandably worried. They don’t know what this difficult new environment means for their families and their plans for the future.

A year ago, the future looked bright. And as long as everything continued as is, you may have been content to go along without a plan—not paying much attention to finances. But now you may feel the need to adjust to the new environment. You may be asking yourself questions:

• Is your family saving enough?• Is your money going into the right places?• If you’re near retirement, where will living expenses come from?

What you need is a financial plan. It’s the single most impactful step you can take toward financial success. I’ve seen a well thought out plan take people from a place of vulnerability and worry to confidence and control. I’ve seen it improve marriages and relationships. When someone comes to me concerned about their financial situation, the first thing I tell them is not to do anything until they have a plan.

A plan starts with an accurate understanding of your family’s income (inflows) and expenses (outflows), and how those interact and change over time. Next we develop actionable ideas to align inflows and outflows so you can achieve long term goals. By imposing discipline, the plan puts you on track to your desired future. By reducing uncertainty, it eases your mind—even when those around you are losing theirs.
