Senior of the Month By RICK RUDDEN [email protected] Helen Sullivan, Rock, has made a life of helping people with various afflictions live life to the fullest. Now that she’s retired, she’s making sure she’s continuing that goal for herself. The licensed practical nurse worked 38 years for Marquette General, retiring in 2008. She worked four years after that, providing home care services. She still cross country skis and snowshoes, kayaks, rafts, and camps with some of her seven sisters and one brother. She grew up with her parents and siblings at a beef cattle farm in the Copper Harbor. She attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette after graduating from high school in the Copper Country. Her parents retired to a 78-acre hobby farm in Rock. In 1978, Helen joined them when she purchased prop- erty near her parents’ farm. Her father has passed, but she still lives next door to her mom and provides lots of help even though ”she’s pretty independent,” Helen said. Helen never really minded traveling from Rock to Marquette for work – except for the last few years of her work life. “I liked it except for the past few years, when they didn’t plow the roads too hot. But I made it to work (in bad weather) when some employees who lived in town didn’t,” she said. She worked on the hospital’s rehab floor. “We helped anyone who needed physical therapy. Many of our patients were stroke victims or were hurt in car acci- dents,” she said. “It was very rewarding. You could really see some posi- tive outcomes.” She added head injury patients showed big improvements. “They would almost be like little kids. With therapy they would come back. You could really see the progress.” She shows up at the Rock Senior Center pretty much every day it’s open (Monday-Thursday). “I help in the kitchen and help serve meals. I help with the birthday activities. A little bit of everything. I help at the parties. I also help people who need rides here.” She said it’s a nice place to visit. “I like socializing with people. They used to have ceramics here. I liked that. Any kind of crafty things. In winter I make hats and do- nate them to different places.” MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | DECEMBER 2016 | Vol 3. DECEMBER 2016 Newsletter

Hello, everyone! Can you believe 2016 is coming to a close? This year seems to have flown by way too fast. The support of seniors like you has increased our presence in the community and our center is getting busier and busier. I enjoy the fact that you are utiliz-ing the services we provide. So, thank you for another

fun-filled year.

We will be changing the newsletter format slightly starting in January. It will be more condensed, and each center will be posting its own menu at the cen-ter with no menu appearing in the newsletter. Our mailing list will still be available but on a limited ba-

sis. It is a new year, so changes are inevitable.

We have the holiday season upon us. We will be tak-ing a bus trip to Escanaba Friday., Dec. 2, to visit the village at the U.P. State Fairgrounds for the “Christmas in the Village” event. I’m told this event is similar to an old-fashioned Dicken’s Christmas. Prior to the event at the fairgrounds, we will stop for lunch. We will spend the afternoon there on the grounds and be home in early evening. This is an outside ex-cursion, so proper footwear and dress for the weather is important. Seating is limited on the bus so call in

your reservation early.

We will have a guest speaker from SAIL here 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec 7 to talk about the program they have to help people who are on Medicaid transi-tion to living in their own home who no longer qualify for nursing home status but need assistance. All are welcome to attend. We hope you join us for lunch fol-lowing the speaker. Just remember to sign up for

lunch at least a day in advance.

The TEFAP quarterly commodity food distribution will be 9-11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at our center. This is open to anyone who falls within the income guide-lines of the program. Call the center or go to

www.mdscaa.org for more information.

We will be celebrating our Christmas Party Friday,

Dec. 16. We are having our party on Friday in lieu of a Wednesday to allow you to attend other events in town. We will be serving a delicious chicken cordon bleu meal. We will have a few door prizes and a “share the wealth raffle”. We will also have “White Elephant Bingo” following the party. See details on

page 17.

The monthly CSFP commodity distribution will be 11-noon Tuesday, Dec. 20. Please note the time for this event has been changed to 11 to noon. This new time

will be in effect until further notice.

We are going to mix things up a bit for our Monthly Birthday Party. We will be combining our Monthly Birthday Party with our New Year’s Party. We will be celebrating both events Friday, Dec. 30. In lieu of a salad bar, we will be having an hors d’oeuvre bar and mocktails beginning at 10:30 a.m. to be followed by a brunch at 11 a.m. We hope you join us to bid farewell

to 2016.

Well, that’s it for this month. Next time you read my ramblings it will be 2017. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!

MEDICARE MINUTES Renelle Betters

MMAP Counselor Phone: (906) 863-2158

Open enrollment is ending soon! The last chance for most of you to make a change to your part D plan or your Medicare Advantage Plan is Wednesday, Dec. 7. If you haven’t compared plans, now would be the time. Maybe some of you are happy with your plan and there is no need to change. By now, you should have been notified of any changes to your plan in 2017. If you need help comparing plans, I am still taking appointments to assist people. For those of you who receive “Extra Help” with your prescription coverage, you have a continuous enroll-ment period. This means, you can change at any time as long as you receive the “Extra Help” from Social Security. This program is for low-income sen-iors who may need help paying for their premiums and it also gives a discount to the copays. If you think you may qualify for this program, we can make an appointment and I can assist you with the application process. For those Blue Cross Blue Shield clients still need-ing assistance, you still have a few days for help. For those of you who are in need of help with the Medigap Subsidy, you will need to apply by Dec. 15. I can help you apply online or by paper. For those who want to keep Blue Cross and change your plan, you still have time to let them know before the Jan. 1 deadline. I can help you weigh your options but you make the final decision. There are counselors like me at every senior center in our Community Action Agency. Any of us can as-sist you with your Medicare or Medicaid questions. Please call to set up an appointment so we can make the time to assist you.

Menominee High School Holiday Open House Wednesday, Dec. 14

The Menominee High School will once again open its doors to the public for its Holiday Open House, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14. Students will participate in activities and decorate the halls with holiday flair. This year’s theme is “Cartoon Holiday Movies”. There will be a free-will offering dinner served at 12:15 p.m. in the cafeteria. Anyone wishing to at-tend the dinner should RSVP by Dec. 8. There will be transportation available via the school bus system for anyone needing transportation to/from the event. For more information about the event, or to make your reservation for the meal or for transportation, please call either of these phone numbers: (906)424-0344 or (906)863-7814 Ext. 224.

BUS TRIP: CHRISTMAS IN THE VILLAGE We will be travelling to Escanaba to the U.P. State Fairgrounds to the Gas & Steam Engine Village for their Christmas in the Village. The village is deco-rated in an old-world style and they have craft ven-dors, horse-drawn wagons and other events going on. While there are buildings on the grounds, this event is mostly outdoors so be prepared for this event and dress for the weather is critical to your comfort. The event starts in the afternoon, but we will go up in advance and have a lunch before the event. We will throw in a bit of holiday fun by singing Christmas carols on the bus, too. To join us, please contact the center as bus space is limited. Cost of the bus ride is $5 per person. The event is free. Please bring money for your lunch and some spending money. Lunch location to be deter-mined as of yet. We will let you know once it is settled.

Medicare Fraud Tip: Medicare or Social Security will

NEVER call you to verify your information that is on

your Medicare card. Never give out your number to

anyone over the phone unless you know the source

directly.

MONTHLY BIRTHDAY PARTY & NEW YEAR’S PARTY

This month’s “Monthly Birthday Party and Salad Bar” has a twist. We are going to celebrate the December birthdays on Friday, December 30th at our “New Year’s Eve Brunch”. We are combining the two events into one big end of the year blowout. We are going to do a brunch instead of lunch. We will be serving earlier on this day. We will start the event at approximately 10:00AM. In lieu of a salad bar, we are going to have a snack table and “mocktails” for you to enjoy starting at 10-10:30am. Then, we will serve a brunch at 11:00AM. Brunch includes: cheesy omelets, sausage links, breakfast cubed potatoes, muffin, grapes, and juice. Cost for this event is the suggested donation of $3 for seniors age 60 & over. Guests under 60 are welcome but must pay $7 each. Seating is limited, so please call or stop by to register no later than a day in advance.

CHRISTMAS PARTY/BINGO Come and celebrate the holiday sea-son at our annual Christmas Dinner on Friday, Dec. 16. We will be serv-ing a delicious chicken cordon bleu

meal with a Christmas dessert at noon. Following dinner, we will have a few door prizes and a “share the wealth” raffle. Cost is a suggested donation of $3 each for seniors age 60 and over. Guests un-der 60 must pay $7 each. Maybe even St. Nick will stop by. Who knows?? Following the Christmas Dinner, we will play White Elephant Bingo. If you want to play, just bring in a small, inexpensive item from your home that you are willing to part with wrapped in a paper bag as a gift. When we call a bingo winner, they will be able to grab a prize from the table. The center will kick in a few items as well. If you don’t have any treasure to part with, then a small dollar store item could be your gift. Dinner reservations are required. All are welcome to play White Elephant Bingo at no cost.

DECEMBER 2016 Newsletter

Hermansville Senior Center Mon - Fri, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

From all of us at the Hermansville Senior Center,

may the Spirit of Christmas bring joy to your heart,

and happiness to your home.

DECEMBER COMMODITIES

Quarterly Commodities will be distributed Friday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bi-Monthly Commodities will distributed 9-10 a.m. Fri-day, Dec. 16. Be sure to bring your cards.

How to cope with Christmas loneliness? ♦ Spend time with people, especially positive

ones, who lift your spirits. Perhaps you’ll be grateful for their cheer.

♦ Exercise regularly, but don’t over-do. Blood pumping can help clear your mind.

♦ Eat right. Chocoholics beware. Overindulgence can mean temporary highs followed by disap-pointing flab.

♦ Lights on! Enjoy sunlight, outdoors if possible. Brighten up your home and workplace. Light therapy sometimes helps get rid of sad feelings.

♦ Budget your gift spending and stick with your budget. Prevent January bill shock.

♦ Talk about your feelings. Keeping them bottled up can mean anxiety, ulcers, sour disposition, and/or explosion. Need a trusted, listening friend? Try a local church.

♦ Give to others. Volunteer. Others can also use a “caring” voice from you.

♦ We all can use good advice navigating life’s storms.

The Hermansville Senior Center has vari-

ous activities going on every week.

Everyday you can come to the center and “Walk in the Gym.” It’s good exercise, and walking with oth-ers can be fun. You can walk anytime from 9 a.m. to

3 p.m. We also have a treadmill for walking .

If you want to just come to the center to enjoy

other’s company, we have morning coffee each day.

We also have Fun Bingo 12:45 p.m. every Tuesday

and Friday. Fifteen games are played.

“Cards” are played on Wednesday afternoons.

“Craft Day” is the third Monday of the month Dec.

19 this month.

Foot Clinic is on the third Tuesday of the month, but just for the month of December the Foot Clinic will

be on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The nurse gets here

around 9 a.m. Cost is $12. Be sure to bring a towel.

Call the Center to register for the Foot clinic.

We also have special dinner days.

“Christmas Dinner” will be Dec. 14, starting at noon. Menu is chicken cordon bleu, vegetable blend, baby red potatoes, strawberry salad and Christmas des-sert. For any meal, please call one business day

ahead to reserve your meal.

Each month we have a “Birthday Day” dinner . Our December Birthday Day Dinner will be Dec.28, start-ing at noon. Menu is baked chicken, red potatoes,

squash and sunshine cake.

Other holidays may also be celebrated. Check your calendars for these special dates, or call the center

for more information.

We would love to have anyone visit at any time, and

bring a friend or two.

Remember to bring in your ECONO and

SUPER ONE receipts. Thank You

Precautions to Take

1. Stay indoors (or don’t stay outside for very long).

2. Keep indoor temperature at 65 degrees or warmer.

There are programs out there that can help with your heating needs.

3. Stay dry, because wet clothing chills your body more quickly.

4. Dress Smart – protect your lungs from cold air. Layer up! Wearing 2 or 3 thinner layers of loose-fitting clothing is warmer than a single layer of thick clothing. Think about get-

ting your thermals!

Essential winter-wear: hats, gloves or preferably mittens, winter coat, boots, and a scarf to cover your mouth

and nose. Always remember to watch for icy walkways or roads. Be aware of things around you.

Sometimes, snow can cover a dangerous walkway of ice.

Last, but not least, always keep in touch with a family member of neighbor. If no one hears from you in a day

or so, help will be called.

Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help.

Center Administrator Pam Haluska, with her brother in-law, Roger Schuette, displays a beautiful “hand-painted” saw blade that Roger made for a raffle at the Hermansville Center. Tickets are $1, and drawing will be at the December Birthday Dinner.

2016 annual Health Fair in Hermansville took place Oct. 19. It was a big success. There were many vendors participating, and a large amount of people attended. The lunch was great, and there were many prizes given away.

Christmas Cookie

Exchange This year, we are trying something new: a Christ-mas cookie exchange Dec. 19 beginning at 1 p.m. Each person who would like to participate brings HOMEMADE Christmas cookies to exchange. (one dozen for each person participating). We will be asking each participant what type of cookies they are making so we do not have duplicates. Light refreshments will be served. Contact the senior if you would like to join us.
