You are invited! Learn about community needs

Please plan to attend one of our one-hour monthly tours where you will learn about our programs so that you can share that information with others. Find out how our aid efforts impact the lives of local residents, and the role of local business and groups in making our community stronger. Tour our local facility, including our food pantry, and get answers to questions you have about local needs and ways you can help. At the same time, you will find out why 4,000 volunteers are vital to our aid efforts, and how you can become part of that team.

Saturday, January 9th—10:00 a.m.Thursday, January 21st—9:30 a.m.Saturday, February 6th—10:00 a.m.Thursday, February 18th—9:30 a.m.

For more information on tours and volunteer opportunities, visit our website, call Erica Mahoney, Volunteer & Pantry Manager at (972) 446-2100, or email [email protected].

Make Home Sweet Home, Home Safe HomeEvery 13 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Falls are the leading cause of injury and injury related death for seniors.

Metrocrest Services client, Ernest, was recently widowed after his wife died from injuries related to a fall in their home. Ernest has no immediate family so he called Metrocrest to learn about his options. When a Case Manager arrived, she entered the home to find Ernest on the floor. Ernest admitted to falling at least three times within the past week. The Case Manager worked with Ernest to make his home safer. He had grab bars installed throughout his home and received a shower chair to make showering less dangerous. He also decluttered his floor and received medical attention. Ernest is doing better and his mobility has improved. Ernest is typical of many Americans who do not seek help the first time they fall. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises everyone to alert a medical professional after their fall.

As we age, physical changes, health conditions, and sometimes medications make falls more likely but not unavoidable. Simple changes in lifestyle including regular medical and eye exams, home modifications, de-cluttering, and sensible no-slip footwear can lessen your risk for falling. In the next installment of Senior Information and Support program, hosted by Metrocrest the topic will be “Preventing Falls for Older Adults.” The program will cover Six Ways to Avoid Falls and provide advice on how to live safer, independent lives.

The program will be held on the following dates at the following locations.

February 16, 2016—Evergreen, Arbor Hills, Carrollton at 2:00 p.m.February 17, 2016—Villas at Raiford, Carrollton, 2:00 p.m.

February 19th, 2016—Evergreen at Luna, Farmers Branch, at 1:00 p.m.

All seniors are welcome to attend but must sign up with Metrocrest Services. Contact Metrocrest Services

at 972-446-2100 if you are interested in attending.

Thank you to all of the sponsors of the 3rd annual Seasons of Service luncheon,

celebrating philanthropy and volunteerism.

The Texas Recreation and Parks Society North Region recently presented The Coppell Senior and Community Center with an Excellence in Programming award, for its Knit Wits fiber arts group. The Knit Wits is a volunteer based group in which members use their talents in sewing, knitting, and other fiber arts, to create baby items for newborns in need. The group of over 40 members meets at the center every Tuesday from 1–3PM. During this time, they share years of experience and expertise with textiles, while creating blankets, booties, slings, diaper bags, washcloths, quilts, hats, and baby clothing for babies in need. All items are donated to “Love Thy Baby” a non-profit agency that provides for local sick, premature, or needy newborns. In 2014 alone, 5,742 baby items were produced and donated to newborns at Parkland Hospital.
