Threat Next Door

Nationwide, one out of every twelve seniors above the age of 60 struggles to have enough food to eat. Texas ranks seventh worst in senior hunger, with the likelihood that a senior will face hunger increasing as they age1. Many factors contribute to senior hunger, but two of the largest are poverty and transportation. In 2015, 9% of seniors in Dallas County lived below the poverty line. In addition to those seniors, nearly 25,000 households were headed by a senior with no access to a vehicle2. These two factors combined leave seniors without access to food and very limited means to purchase it. Seniors dealing with hunger also have an increased risk for chronic health conditions, including depression, heart attack, heart failure, and asthma.

Our community is rallying behind seniors facing the threat of hunger by sponsoring different programs to ensure there is no senior hunger. Metrocrest Hospital Authority, North Texas Food Bank, and Aldi, as well as other supporters have teamed up with Metrocrest Services to help programs like Eat Smart, Live Strong and Home Delivered Meals continue to bring healthy food to seniors who might otherwise not eat. Eat Smart, Live Strong is a program created by the US Department of Agriculture to encourage senior

adults to choose more fruits, vegetables, and increase exercise in their lives. Metrocrest Services provides seniors with fresh fruit and vegetables as part of Eat Smart, Live Strong each month. Eligible seniors can also enroll in the Home Delivered Meals program where a hot, nutritious, and low cost lunch is delivered directly to their door Monday through Friday by a dedicated volunteer. Seniors are also able to visit our pantry Monday–Saturday to supplement their diet with nutritious meats, breads, fruits, and vegetables.

Metrocrest Case Managers caution that hunger can happen to anyone. “No one expects to be in that situation. These are smart people who had good jobs before they retired,” one Case Manager noted. Another notes “Many [seniors] aren’t bringing in enough income to provide the food they need.” She continues, “they pay their bills first and whatever is left they use for food.” Unfortunately, sometimes it

is not enough—which is where Metrocrest comes alongside the senior to work with them to remain independent, healthy, and in their homes.

You are invited! Learn about community needs

Please plan to attend one of our one-hour monthly tours where you will learn about our programs so that you can share that information with others. Find out how our aid efforts impact the lives of local residents, and the role of local business and groups in making our community stronger. Tour our local facility, including our food pantry, and get answers to questions you have about local needs and ways you can help. At the same time, you will find out why 4,000 volunteers are vital to our aid efforts, and how you can become part of that team.

Saturday, March 12—10:00 a.m.Saturday, April 9—10:00 a.m.Thursday, April 14—9:30 a.m.

For more information on tours and volunteer opportunities, visit our website, call Erica Mahoney, Volunteer & Pantry Manager at (972) 446-2100, or email [email protected].

For some teenagers, turning sixteen is all about hitting the road, but for Abby her sixteenth birthday was about rolling up her sleeves and uniting her friends and family to raise money for her neighbors in need. Abby issued a request on the internet through Facebook, at her church, and through her networks that in lieu of presents, she’d like her guests to donate to Metrocrest Services to help her reach her goal of $1,600. She reached her goal before her birthday, even inspiring an anonymous donor to further contribute to her cause. When Abby’s high school heard about the good work Abby was doing in the community, they elected her Student of the Week. Abby has volunteered with Metrocrest for the last 4 years during the summer to make sure kids have enough food to eat when they are out of school. In total, Abby raised $2,190 for programs that benefit her neighbors in their time of need.

Volunteers mean so much to us in Carrollton, without them we would not be able to provide all the services we provide to our citizens. Volunteers provide countless hours of service to the community assisting in various ways like answering phones, picking up trash, laying bark chips, teaching classes, greeting guests, and helping with events, etc. At the Carrollton Senior Center volunteers worked 4,755 hours last year, valued at approximately $100,000 dollars. Thank you to our many volunteers!

Caregivers for Alzheimer’s and Dementia face special challenges. Find your support at the Farmers Branch Senior Center’s Alzheimer’s Support group that meets the 1st Tuesday of each month from 6:30–7:30 p.m. For more information, call 972-919-8740.

April is National Volunteer Month. Volunteer Jesse Alvarado instructs the Painting and Art group that meets each Monday at 2 p.m. at the Farmers Branch Senior Center. Thank you to our 200 plus volunteers who graciously donated a combined total of 2,650 hours to the Farmers Branch Senior Center in 2015. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Ida at 972-919-8744.
