Introduction Welcome to Intertek UK’s 2012 seminar and training programme.

Our seminars and training days, on or off-site offer an inexpensive, concise and hands-on approach to learning most aspects of quality assurance on all kinds of consumer products. The instructors are all well-trained, experienced members of staff who play key roles in the everyday running of our UKAS accredited laboratories in Leicester and Leigh and have therefore earned a reputation of their own.

Each session will not only provide in-depth knowledge on the chosen subject with scenarios experienced in the trade, but will also serve as a great means of networking with colleagues in the trade that are often in a similar position to your own. Previous seminars have proven to be a great success providing positive feedback. Such success has urged an expansion in training facilities and programmes allowing Intertek to provide you with a range of training sessions for every need.

Where are they held? Most seminars listed and dated here are held on-site at our offices in Leicester. Our training facilities provide attendees a comfortable learning experience. Most scheduled seminars at our facilities have the added advantage of a laboratory tour providing clients with a unique experience of a working facility. Please ask when registering if your course includes a laboratory tour. We also offer a selection of textile courses at our Leigh facilities. These are marked in blue on the schedule (page 3). The maps for each location are included within this brochure for your reference (pages 25 & 26).

Alternatively, certain of our seminars can be held in your own location. With advance booking, it can be arranged for the tutor to visit and hold the seminar in your offices giving an unlimited number of colleagues the opportunity to attend. The advantage of this is that your products can be discussed with the tutor focusing the seminar on particular areas that you may encounter as an organisation. To arrange a training day at your site, contact Trudi Marsden by phone on +44 (0)116 263 0330, or email [email protected] to discuss arrangements and costs.

When do they begin and end? We offer two different lengths of seminars – Full Day and Half Day. Full Day seminars begin at 10:00 AM and conclude by 16:00 with lunch provided. Half Day seminars are 3 hours in length. These are Morning sessions. The Morning seminars begin at 10:00 and conclude by 13:00. Please note that lunch is not provided for Half Day seminars; however, we do provide a mid-morning breakfast/snack.

Lunch & Refreshments Lunch and refreshments will be provided on site for Full Day Courses at Intertek. Please note that lunch is not provided for Half Day seminars; however, we do provide a mid-morning breakfast/snack. Inform Trudi Marsden in advance if you have any special dietary needs.

Rates We know that training can be costly. We have tried to keep our costs within reason. Registration for each seminar or training day is £165 plus VAT per attendee per full day seminar or £85 plus VAT per attendee per half day. At this cost, you can afford to professionally train every person in your department! Note the Product Safety Training course is priced differently from the rates listed above.

Although we try our best to accommodate our seminar attendees, registration cancellations made within 24 hours of a seminar will be subject to a Cancellation Fee of £25.

Registration Please complete and return the Registration Form which may be found at the back of this brochure (page 24) by fax or email.

Overview Toys are one of the most wide ranging categories of consumer products encompassing everything from small soft filled toys to complex radio controlled electrical items to multi-activity climbing frames and swing combinations. Understandably they are one of the most closely controlled product groups in terms of safety. The safety of toys within Europe is governed by the Toy Safety Directive, which lays down the legal requirements covering the safety of toys, their labelling and the obligations on manufacturers, importers and retailers. The directive is supported by various standards, which detail the specific requirements in terms of mechanical and electrical safety, flammability and chemical hazards. This seminar will consider what products are covered by this directive and the role of standards in the context of the Toy Directive. An overview will be given of the requirements of the standards as well as considering other standards that may be relevant to certain types of toys. Samples will be available to illustrate various points along with test equipment and a tour of our facilities. At Intertek, we follow a product from concept to final distribution, working with clients to ensure all areas of the business process are accounted for, addressed and successfully monitored. We offer clients complete solution to the most complex of systems. Our innovative research paired with our global reach gives us the unique ability to offer you local management of operations anywhere in the world. Intertek is not only a leading international provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of global and local industries, but more importantly, the trusted partner you can depend on. Overview The General Product Safety Regulations were drawn up to ensure that products that are marketed or distributed within the EU and which are not covered by any other standards are safe under foreseeable conditions of use. These regulations were amended in October 2005 giving greater powers to enforcement authorities, including the ability to order a product recall. Obligations are placed on producers and distributors to inform the authorities once they become aware unsafe goods have been supplied. Risk assessment of products will need to be considered as an essential part of the product development process. Certain European standards will be given a special status so that compliance will provide a “presumption of conformity” with the general safety requirement. This seminar will provide an understanding of how the regulations work in the UK. A range of standards will be reviewed showing how enforcement officers use them. A simple but effective risk assessment process will be presented with worked examples. In addition the following product categories will be reviewed with a view to their safety assessment:

• Candles, tea lights and holders • Stationery products

Assessing Safety of Products under General Product Safety Regulations

2012 Seminar & Training Programme Page 8

Overview

A primary requirement in the manufacture of safe cosmetic products is protecting the health of the consumer from harm. This protection also enables increased consumer confidence.

Knowledge, understanding and interpretation of the law governing the manufacture and marketing of cosmetic products are principally the role and responsibilities of the manufacturer, importer and distributor. However, help is available. Since the first law governing the manufacture and marketing of safe cosmetic products was introduced in the European Union (EU) in 1976 in the form of a Directive (76/768/EEC), and each Member State transposed (interpreted) it into their own Regulation, a number of changes in the form of amendments had also occurred. Keeping up-to-date with these changes is very important. A Safety Assessor can help to guide and provide interpretation of the cosmetics legislation.

Starting on the 11th July 2013, the EU Directive will be replaced by the Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 which will apply directly across all the EU Member States. Additional improved changes have also been enacted. This new Cosmetics Regulation (also known as the Recast) becomes law on 11th July 2013. How prepared are you?

The morning session will examine the Cosmetics Directive with specific emphasis on what information is needed before a cosmetic product can be legally sold in the EU, what is regulated, comparison with the new Regulation, identifying the new changes and addressing the cosmetic products labelling requirements. Simple practical exercises will be used to illustrate relevant points.

In the afternoon session, an insight will be given into the processes involved in the cosmetic safety assessment. There will be a review of the type and quality of data/information required and available; also the additional requirements of the new Regulation. The relationship between hazard, exposure and risk, and how these are expressed with regards to types of products will be considered. At Intertek, we aim to help prevent potential adverse consequences and provide a solution.

Overview Do you sell textile goods in the UK? Are you a supplier to a UK textile products retailer? If so, by now you will have a pretty good grasp of the legislation that applies, whether it’s a national UK law, or a requirement of the European Union. (And if you don’t, please come to our Legislation Seminar, described elsewhere in this brochure!!) But the expansion of the global marketplace is seeing many UK retailers looking to open stores in other European countries and all points east and west. So just when you thought you could relax because all your legislative requirements were covered……think again. What do you know about flammability requirements in France or Canada? Can you have formaldehyde on a product in the Netherlands? Did you know that care labelling is mandatory for the USA? Ever heard of the mandatory China GB requirements? This seminar will give you a flavour of what legislation exists in other countries. • We will look in detail at other EU member states such as France,

Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. • We will also introduce you to legislation in many other countries,

2012 Seminar & Training Programme Page 22

Overview Our Product Safety Training course addresses key issues involved with integrating safety into your business process. This two day training provides analysis and understanding of crucial consumer product safety issues that designers and manufacturers face every day, while providing insight as to how to detect safety concerns and develop cost effective solutions that minimize potential safety hazards. Attendees will be taught the theory behind Intertek’s Design Hazard Analysis Methodology (DHA). Interactive workshop sessions, immediately after the subject lectures, will enable the attendees to perform a DHA on sample products. This serves to reinforce the learning experience with actual hands-on experience and provides a forum for questions and answers with safety engineers. Product Safety Training is appropriate for anyone involved in the production of consumer products (e.g. Product Engineers, Designers, Production Managers, Technologists or Buyers). However, the training may also be useful to managers of a product creation function who need exposure to Product Safety in order to build good or best practice in their organization. The content introduces key safety principles and outlines the components necessary for companies and professionals to implement a process that will produce the safest product possible.
