Diminuco Honored After WinDick Diminuco was named the Buffalo Bills Coach of

the Week after Alden beat Depew 14-13 in a big ClassB matchup last weekend.

Both teams had entered the game undefeated with 4-0 records. Depew was ranked 8th in New York Statewhile Alden was ranked3rd.

“This award is really ateam award,” Diminucosaid. “The kids are theones that won the game sothis is their award morethan mine.”

Alden led 14-7 at thehalf and survived a 4th-quarter rally by theWildcats.

“Obviously, Depew is anawful good football team,”Diminuco said. “Theymight have been the betterteam. We made some mis-takes and it costs us somepoints. But the kids arepretty resilient. We didnʼtplay our best and they stillcame out with a win.”

Alden scored twice inthe second quarter to takea 14-7 lead at the half.

Justin Patterson ran 76yards for a TD to give theBulldogs a 7-0 lead.

“Heʼs a very good foot-ball player,” Diminuco said.“He can find an openingand he is deceptively fast.”

Patterson finished with140 yards rushing butmissed most of the secondhalf after he twisted hisankle.

“He had just 4 carries inthe second half,” Diminuco said. “He was really strug-gling and that hurt us. When heʼs in there, itʼs a littlemore difficult for teams to defend against us.”

Late in the 2nd quarter, Quarterback Brian Stoldttossed a 12-yard TD pass to Ryan Sosnowski to giveAlden a 14-7 lead.

In the 4th quarter, Depew scored to pull within apoint, but a 2-point conversion attempt on a fake kickwas stuffed by the Alden defense, leaving the Bulldogswith a 14-13 lead.

Late in the game, Depew drove inside the Alden 10-

yard line but missed a FG attempt on 4th-and-goal fromthe 12.

The game was played in front of a huge crowd.“It was a great crowd,” Diminuco said, “and they got

to see a pretty good football game.”Diminuco is in his third

year at Alden after coach-ing at Albion for 35 years.

Two weeks ago,Diminuco led his team to awin over Albion for thesecond straight season.

“I really donʼt enjoyplaying Albion,” he said.“Thatʼs just not a fun weekfor me. Some of theircoaches played for meand some were on mystaff for a long time. Thisyear, Albion had five or sixkids whose fatherʼs hadplayed for me. I reallydonʼt enjoy it at all.”

Diminuco played highschool football at MonroeHigh School in Rochester.

As a senior quarterbackin 1970, he was namedthe All-Greater RochesterPlayer of the Year, leadinghis team to an undefeatedseason and a leaguechampionship.

“I was four or fivepounds lighter back then,”Diminuco joked.

After graduating fromhigh school, Diminucowent to Ottawa Universityin Kansas to play DivisionII football.

He moved into thestarting QB job with two

games left in his freshman season.Over the next three seasons, had a career that would

get him named to the Ottawa University Hall of Fame.Diminuco is also inducted into the Section 5 football Hallof Fame.

Diminuco has 226 wins in his career, a figure that is3rd in WNY history behind Johnny Barnes (Canisius,287) and Gene Masters (Grand Island, 248).

“Obviously, football has been a very big part of mylife,” he said. “Iʼve had a lot of great times because offootball.”

weekend and are now just one win from clinching a secondstraight A South Division title.

“Thatʼs one of our goals,” Kurzanski said. “Every year, our team goals are to win our league, win the Sectionalsand then win the state championship. Our goals are always

the same.”Kurzanski says the goals

are intentionally high.“You could be good or you

can be great,” he said, “butyou canʼt be both. You canonly be one or the other. Weset our goals high becausewe want to be great.”

The Billies have receivedsolid play on the offensiveline this season, led bysenior captain TJ Scamurra.

“Heʼs a great kid,”Kurzanski said. “Heʼs acharacter guy. He doesgreat in school. Heʼs a 3-year starter and he hassolidified our offensive line.”

Scamurra has been mentioned as a Trench TrophyFinalist as the top lineman in Western New York. Over thesummer he was named the best Offensive Lineman at theMouse McNally Linemanʼs Camp.

“Heʼs just a dominating force,” Kurzanski said. “Heʼs anespecially polite young man who is confidant in his ability.Heʼs a great leader. He understands our expectations anddoes a great job as a captain.”

Kurzanski says that Scamurra, a 6-0, 280-pound senior, will play football after high school.

“Heʼs a little short for the bigger Division I schools,”Kurzanski said. “But heʼs more than adequate for theplaces that are recruiting him.”

Kurzanski said that programs from Division I-AA like NewHampshire and Colgate are recruiting Scamurra, as are afew Division II programs.

“He has a 93 academic average with a high SAT score,”Kurzanski said. “Heʼll get into most of the schools that hewants to. He has a lot more opportunities to play becauseof his grades.”

Scamurra also wrestles in the heavyweight division onthe Williamsville South wrestling team.

“He has wrestled the last two years,” Kurzanski said,“and it has really helped him on his feet with balance andleverage. Heʼs become a better football player since hestarted wrestling.”

Panther PowerCorey Vail runs the ball in Pioneerʼs 17-0 win overEden last weekend. Pioneer can clinch the B SouthDivision with a win this week.

Fredonia beat Cleve Hill 26-16 last weekend andclinched the C North Division with the win.

“Everybody knew that this was a game for firstplace,” Fredonia coach Bob Ball said. “But we didnʼtknow we could win the division until after the game.We were just focused on beating Cleveland Hill. They have good athletes, lot of seniors and we wereon the road.”

The game was playedafter heavy rains hadturned the field into asoupy mess. That was notnecessarily an advantagefor Fredonia.

“We like a fast trackourselves,” Ball said. “Welike good field conditions.Fortunately, everywherewe play has better condi-tions than what we haveat home.”

Two weeks ago, theHillbillies played in mud attheir own field and fellbehind Gowanda 28-12 atthe half before pulling outa win.

“We have speed too,”Ball said. “Weʼd ratherhave a dry track. CleveHill was wet but the foot-ing was good.”

With Fredonia leading20-8 in the 4th quarter,Ball decided to run theball.

#20 Dylan Cassidystepped into the QB spotand proceeded to run the ball.

“We had a 2-score lead,” Ball said. “The only waywe would lose was turnovers. All we wanted to dowas run the clock. We put him in the backfield andtold him ʻjust get what you can. ̓We didnʼt even haveto worry about hand offs.ʼ”

Instead, Cassidy scored on a 40-yard run, givingthe Hillbillies a 26-8 lead with 5:00 left.

“He plays slot receiver for us,” Ball said. “He alsocomes into back field for the Wildcat formation. Hehas played some tailback. He was first-team all-league at defensive back last year.”

“Dylan has some speed,” Ball said. “His brotherTyler plays linebacker and I have both kids in track.”

Dylan Cassidy finished 7th at the New York State

Championship Track Meet in the 400 IntermediateHurdles. In the Section 6 Meet, Cassidy finished sec-ond to Daryl Spencer - Cleve Hillʼs quarterback.Cassidy also returned the opening kickoff to theCleve Hill 25-yard line to set up an early TD.

“The two fastest kids in Western New York wereon the field in the same game,” Ball said.

After Cleve Hill scoredto pull within 26-16,Cassidy ran 8 consecutiveplays and ground outthree first downs.

“They knew we wantedto run the clock out and itwas no secret he wasgoing to run,” Ball said.“He got 81 yards all onthose last ten plays.”

Both Dylan and TylerCassidy have athletic suc-cess in their family history.

The boys ̓grandfather,Fred Larson, was themost successful coach inFredonia athletic history.

Larson coached theFredonia cross countryteam from 1966 until hisretirement in 1995. Histeams won 25 Leaguechampionships, 19 con-secutively and 13Sectional titles.

His record of 568-30 issimply astounding and atone time, Larson held thenations ̓longest win streakwith 250 consecutive wins

from 1971-1984. He was named the National CCCoach of the Year in 1989. He also won 16 leaguetitles and 7 sectional titles in track.

“Iʼm lucky that both Dylan and Tyler didn't go theCross Country route like Grandpa did,” Ball said. “Ihave them both for track. Dylan plays basketball inwinter and Tyler wrestles.”

Dylan, a 5-10, 165-pound senior, maintains anacademic average of 92.

“He makes sure he is prepared for the game,” Ballsaid. “He just goes about his business and takescare of his job. Heʼs always at practice and you knowyou can count on him.”

Hutch Tech lost a heartbreaker in

overtime to Niagara Wheatfield 21-20

Friday night, dropping the Engineers to

1-4 on the season.

“I thought

Niagara

Wheatfield is a

very physical and

well-coached

team,” said Hutch

Tech coach Chris

Gelsomino. “They

were tough to

tackle.”

Hutch Tech

held a 20-0 first

half lead.

“I think we’ve

improved all sea-

son,” Gelsimino

said. “We were

even with

Kenmore West at

the half, we were

beating Lockport at

the half. We just

have to finish”

A bright spot for Hutch Tech was

Ameer Franklin. Franklin has been a

multiple position threat for the

Engineers throughout the season.

“He is very talented,” Gelsimino

said. “He has not missed one practice.

He is fast, he can jump, he has good ball

skills and he’s played well on defense.”

Franklin has also been a force in the

Engineers return game as well.

“He can return kicks and punts,”

Gelsomino said.

“He is very explo-

sive and he has

great vision.”

Franklin can play

any number of

positions, accord-

ing to Gelsomino.

“He is very ver-

sitalie,” he said.

“He can play sin-

gle- or two-high

safety. We’d like

to see him in the

Wildcat too.”

Franklin has

returned an inter-

ception for a TD

this season and, in

Friday’s loss,

returned a fumble

50 yards fumble

return to the ten-

yard line, setting up a TD.

“He played very well,” Gelsomino

said. “He could have racked up some

more numbers.We were planning on

going to him more but he got hurt in the

second quarter.”

Jamestown improved to 4-1 on the

season with a resounding 47-13 victory

over Lancaster last weekend.

“Our guys played real well,” coach

Tom Langworthy

said. “I think we

are starting to hit

our speed. They

were focused and

had a real good

week of practice.”

The Red

Raiders offense

was in high gear

as they rolled up

493 yards.

Spencer DeCinque

powered the

ground game as

he ran for 219

yards and 4 TDs

on 22 carries.

Junior QB

Dennis Drew

directed the

offense as the

Raiders raced to a

27-0 lead at the half. Drew completed 9

of 15 passes for 128 yards in the win.

Drew has now passed for 596 yards

this season.

“Dennis played outstanding,”

Langworthy said. “It was his best game

yet at the varsity level. He was consis-

tent, which gives us a lot of diversity in

our offense.”

Drew, who started as a sophomore in

2010, has big-game experience. He

helped Jamestown

to the Section 6

semifinals last fall.

“He under-

stands what to do

to beat the

defense,”

Langworthy said.

“He is very poised

and levelheaded.”

Langworthy

attributes Drew’s

success to the

junior’s work ethic.

“He has put in

so much time in

the offseason,”

Langworthy said.

“That’s important

but the more game

experience he gets

is even better.”

Jamestown will

look to Drew’s leadership down the cru-

cial stretch of the season, Langworthy

said.

“He is continuing to grow and all the

work he did helps,” he said. “He has a

great command of our offense.”

Williamsville North won a tense

game against Grand Island 7-0 last

weekend. The win kept the Spartans

alive in the A North playoff picture.

“We had some

missed opportuni-

ties,” coach Mike

Mammoliti said.

“We had the ball

with a couple of

scoring chances. We

had it inside the 20

and threw a pick.

We have to cash in

some of those

opportunities.”

The Spartans’

offense had trouble

finding a rhythm as

Grand Island forced

5 turnovers. The

Spartans only score

came on a screen

pass that QB Ryan

Majewski tossed to

Trevor McDaniel,

who took it 81

yards for a TD.

Majewski, a sophomore, has paced

the Spartans offense all season long.

“He managed the game ok,”

Mammoliti said. “We were missing out

on some of the stuff we thought we

could take advantage of but he made a

couple heads-up plays.”

During the off-season, Majewski

showed the coaches his abilities and

earned the starting job on the varsity.

“We learned

way back in the

spring he has the

arm and stature,”

Mammoliti said.

“Some of the grow-

ing process is

knowing how to

read defenses and

he is getting better

at that every week.”

Mammoliti has

tried to keep it sim-

ple for his sopho-

more QB but

expects big things

in the future.

“He has matured

into a quiet leader,”

Mammoliti said.

“In practice, when

things are getting

out of focus he

keeps them going. I am excited to see

what he’ll bring. His maturation will

allow us to expand our offense.”

Majewski, who also plays basket-

ball, maintains an academic average

near 90.

14-0,” Valley said.

Griffin led the

Mustangs, rushing

for 90 yards and a

touchdown.

“Devon he is

our Mr.

Everything,” Valley said. “We split him

out at WR and he is our leading rusher.”

Griffin, a returning starter, may be

more noted for his play on defense.

“He has 4 sacks on defense,” Valley

said. “He has always played defensive

back but we moved him to outside line-

backer to get him more involved. He’s

not used to being real physical but he’s

getting acclimated to it.”

Griffin has embraced the role and

the Mustangs have

benefitted.

“The results

have paid off for

us the last few

weeks,” Valley

said.

Valley said that

Griffin’s work

ethic and experi-

ence have been a

huge boost to the

defense.

“He is one of

the hardest work-

ing kids we have,”

he said. “He is a

kid that leads by

example. He

works hard every

practice and does

the little things. He

pushes kids to do

well in a positive way, and he keeps

things going.”

Griffin is hoping to play football

after high school.

“He is a great kid and a great leader

for our program,” Valley said.

Maryvale won an exciting B West

contest Saturday with a 29-22 victory

over Burgard. The win keeps the Flyers

alive in the Class B playoff race.

The Flyers

squandered a

fourth quarter lead

then drove 85

yards to win the

game on a 30 yard

TD pass from

Mike Wawrzyniak

to Trevor Karek

with 24 seconds

remaining.

“It is a huge

win for our pro-

gram,” coach Jeff

Buccieri said. “It

kept us alive in

the playoff hunt.

We’re 2-1 and

right in the middle

of things.”

Buccieri said

that Burgard was

a physical oppo-

nent.

“They’re a hard-nosed team,” he

said. “We were able to get a lead in the

fourth quarter and almost let it slip

away. The kids kept their composure.”

Another driving force in the victory

was senior co-captain Shawn Barr, who

made 4 tackles, 2 for lost yardge. He

also rushed for 64 yards from the full-

back spot.

“Shawn is one of our leading tack-

lers,” Buccieri

said. “He is a

tough running

back. He runs a lot

of traps and isos.

He’s not afraid to

take on a tackler or

run him over.”

Barr is the

vocal leader for

the Flyers but had

a late start to the

program, moving

to the Maryvale

district after his

sophomore season.

“I remember, as

a JV coach, going

up against him at

Springville,”

Buccieri said. “He

had a non-stop

motor. He was a

freshman at the time and had a non-stop

motor.”

Barr, the Flyers leading tackler, has

rushed for almost 400 yards this fall.

“He is really the heart and soul of

our team,” Buccieri said.

Dunkirk led 21-0 at the half but lost

to Olean 27-21 last weekend.

“We had two games at home,” coach

Tim Majka said, “and we lost both.”

The Marauders

also lost QB

Kevin Burns for

the season when

he siffered a rup-

tured spleen in the

loss to Olean.

“He’s better

now,” Majka said.

“He’ll becoming

home in the next

day or two but he

won’t play again

this season.”

At 2-2 in the B

South, Dunkirk is

now in a fierce

playoff fight with

a huge game at

Springville.

“We sat down

with the kids on

Monday,” Majka

said. “We got away from the normal

routine. We put the standings and the

tiebreakers on the chalkboard. We just

laid it on the line for the players. All we

have do is win. We can work hard, get

through this and make the playoffs.”

Dunkirk will receive a huge boost if

linebacker Kyle Utegg can return from

an ankle injury.

“He played sparingly in the last two

games,” Majka said. “He had a partially

dislocated ankle

and some strained

ligaments.”

Utegg, a 3-year

starter for Majka,

has been a force.

“He played on

the line for two

years,” Majka said.

“This year we

moved him to tight

end because he is

so athletic.”

Before his

injury, Utegg had a

streak of 12 games

in which he made

at least 10 tackles.

“He is an

absolute leader,”

Majka said. “The

kids on the team

look up to him.”

Utegg (6-2, 200) has 211 tackles in

his career and - if he can get healthy -

needs just 7 to break the school record.

“Sidelines to sideline, he reads plays

so well,” Majka said. “He’s always

around the ball.”

Akron put together a complete per-

formance Friday night with a big 36-8

win over Wilson last weekend. The

Tigers jumped out to a 29-0 halftime

lead and coasted

home with a C

North win.

Fullback Brett

Judaz had a huge

game as he rushed

for 111 yards and

a TD. He also

returned an inter-

ception for a TD.

“We started out

running the ball a

lot,” coach Mike

Dean said. “We

like to throw the

ball, but it was

wet and muddy.

We gave Brett a

lot of touches.

He’s consistent

and will run the

ball straight ahead

and hard.”

Judaz, a senior, started at linebacker

as a 10th grader. He won a starting job

on offense last fall.

“He has the natural instinct for foot-

ball, especially at linebacker,” Dean

said. “At the high school level it is hard

for kids to explode through the tackles.

He gets it and he does real well on the

football field.”

The experience Judaz gained the past

two seasons is starting to show as he has

helped the Tigers

into the playoff

race. Akron will

play a big game at

Fredonia this week.

The Tigers will

clinch a playoff

spot with a win.

“He is trusting

other people to do

their jobs,” Dean

said. “As a sopho-

more he was all

over the place try-

ing to do too

much. He is start-

ing to do his job

and when he does

everything seems

to click.”

Judasz has

become a leader,

according to Dean.

“He is a totally different player than

in the past two years.” Dean said. “He

is exciting to watch.”

Judasz has rushed for 272 yards and

6 TDs this season and also leads the

Tigers defense in tackles.

C Allegany-Limestone beat Portville

28-15 in a non-league contest and

improved to 3-2 on the season. The

Gators, who have won 3 straight games,

are 2-2 in C South and in a fierce play-

off race.

“Those first

two losses really

hurt,” coach Chad

Lyter said. “We

lost two games by

a total of four

points.”

With two

games left on the

schedule, the

Gators will quali-

fy for the playoffs

with two wins.

“We need to

take things just

one week at a

time,” Lyter said.

“If we win out, we

are in. If we lose,

we’ll need to win

the tie-breakers.”

Lyter says that

his team is starting to show signs of

being a good team.

“Everybody wants to be good but

you have to do the things that are

required,” he said. “These kids worked

real hard over the summer. But you

have to practice every day like you are

playing the best that week. We are start-

ing to do that.”

Trevin Barber, a junior, returned a

kickoff 80 yards for a TD in the win.

Portville had just

taken a 15-12 lead

and Barber’s

return put the

Gators back on top

to stay.

“That was a big

change in the

game,” Lyter said.

“It really deflated

them and, after

that, it was our

game the rest of

the way.”

Last spring,

Barber went to the

New York State

Championship

meet for the

Pentathalon.

“Trevin is a

really good ath-

lete,” Lyter said.

“He works hard and is a big strong kid.

He’s doing a nice job for us.”

Barber is also a solid student.

“He’s a B-plus, A-minus student,”

Lyter said. “He’s never in any trouble.

He’s just a great high school kid.”

Maple Grove beat Randolph 38-6 in

a battle between two of the top Class D

programs in NY State. Maple Grove

entered the game

ranked #5 in the

state while

Randolph was

ranked 2nd.

The Maple

Grove defense

caused three

turnovers that led

to scores.

“We made our

own breaks,”

coach Curt

Fischer said,

“and we capital-

ized on a couple

of their errors.

Our big plays

kept us in the

lead.”

Maple Grove

QB Alex Grace

completed 8 of

12 passes for 203

yards and 3 TDs.

“Alex stepped up to the plate,”

Fischer said. “He was phenomenal. He

maintained his composure and deliv-

ered. Randolph brought a lot of pres-

sure but he stepped up in the pocket and

completed two big third-and-longs.”

Grace has been a standout for the

Red Dragons this season, on offense

and defense.

“He has been

phenomenal,”

Fischer said. “He

is kind of a three-

headed monster.

He’s a great pass-

er, he runs well

and has been

great on defense.”

Grace leads the

Red Dragons’

defense with four

interceptions.

“He is an all

Fischer said.

“Alex has a very

good way of read-

ing the quarter-

back. Being a

quarterback him-

self, he reads pat-

terns well and

gets a good break

on balls. He’s become a great tackler.”

Grace helped Fischer win a state

Fischer said. “He is a great role model

DD Panama improved to 4-1 on the sea-

Alec Blose had a huge game as he

rushed 11 times for 89 yards and scored

2 touchdowns.

“He had a great

day,” Panama

coach Chris Payne

said. “They really

played us well on

the outside. They

were strong on the

edges so we ran

him up the middle.

There were huge

holes. He ran

some people

Blose also

intercepted a pass

and returned it 28

yards for another

touchdown. The

defensive TD gave

Panama a 14-0

lead.

“That was real-

ly a big play,”

Payne said. “It came at a big time.”

Blose has been the Panthers emo-

tional leader this season.

“He gets pretty emotional out there,”

Payne said. “He is pretty hard on him-

self and others. He’s a hard-working kid

who is very committed to what we are

trying to get done. He is trying to be

great and trying to make us be a great

team.”

Blose has been

one of Panama’s

leading tacklers all

season.

“He’s one of

our smartest peo-

ple out there,”

Payne said. “He

takes home a lot of

game film of our

opponents to

study. He strug-

gled early on in

the year at outside

linebacker but we

moved him back

inside and he feels

more at home.”

The win means

that Panama will

face Chautauqua

Lake this weekend

in a battle for the

league lead in the

DD Division.

“It’s a game for first place,” Payne

said. “We’re looking at getting a num-

they’ll clinch the division. It’s a

St. Francis and Canisius followed by a

“Our kids have

a good attitude,”

coach Angelo

“Obviously they

They are doing

them to do.”

One player who

has been a stand-

out this season is

senior Kyree

Carter.

“Kyree has

been with us for three years,” Sciandra

said. “He started on the varsity as a

sophomore. He’s gotten better every

year, especially on the offensive side of

the ball.”

Carter (6-0, 240) earned a starting job

on the defensive line as a 10th grader.

“He’s still playing nose tackle,”

Sciandra said. “He’s been good on

defense for three years. He is so agile

for a guy that size and it’s very difficult

to block him. His feet move like he’s

170 pounds.”

While he

played FB last sea-

son, Carter is the

featured running

back this season.

“He is such a

big body running

the football,”

Sciandra said. “He

is tough to bring

down because he’s

so big and strong.”

Carter, a team

captain, has rushed

for 650 yards and

4 TDs this fall.

Sciandra says

that Carter’s per-

sonality is far dif-

ferent from his on-

field demeanor.

“He’s a good kid,” Sciandra said.

“His smile lights up a room. He is a

tremendous kid, very well-mannered.

He gets tough and mean on the field

but, off the field he is just a nice kid

who works very hard in the classroom.”

Baldwinsville filed a complaint against game officialson Monday, but it's all but certain that West Genesee's39-38 football victory Friday night will stand.

John Rathbun, executive director of Section 3, saidthe national high school football rulebook states that theresult of a game cannot be changed once itʼs over.

After reviewing game film, coaches from both teamstold The Post-Standard that West Genesee was erro-neously given a fifth down amidst confusion on itsgame-winning drive in the closing moments.

On the decisive drive, reserve QB Dan Ginestro hitSean Howard for a first down at the B'ville 37. The playwas followed by a dropped pass, a short completionand two more incompletions - which should have giventhe Bees a turnover on downs.

But somewhere in the sequence, officials lost track ofthe down (possibly while conferring about the gameclock), and the Wildcats lined up for another snap.Ginestro connected with Brett Colvin for a completionthat moved the chains.

The formal complaint by Baldwinsville will trigger areview by a three-person panel to investigate theactions of the officials, potential resulting in sanctions.Rathbun said a finding could be reached this week.

Sean (Diddy) Combs acted like just another angry par-ent. The famous rapper left his chair and came onto thefield at halftime of Iona Prep's eventual 37-16 loss toXaverian in the CHSFL Class AAA game (Sunday) in NewRochelle.

The New York Post reported that the entertainmentmogulʼs son, Justin, hadn't been put pack into the lineupdespite his team's offensive woes that led to a 24-0 deficit.A week earlier, he has scored three TDs in place of injuredstarter Mario Biaggi.

The younger Combs played the first series; Biaggi wasabsent from school and missed a practice during theweek. According to the paper, though, Combs told coachVic Quirolo he had a bruised shoulder.

“Justin said his shoulder was bothering him, he couldn'treally throw,” Quirolo said. “But then I guess he couldthrow a lot. It's like a soap opera.”

Papa Combs approached offensive coordinator D.J.Williams, but was rebuffed by Quirolo, who told them itwas not the time.

Justin Combs asked to go back in at the half and thesenior completed 11 of 16 passes for 212 yards, twotouchdowns and two interceptions.

Diddy Acts Like A Daddy

Quakers in ControlBy Mark Adair

In a matchup ofunbeaten teams,Orchard Park scoredearly and often as theQuakers took control ofthe AA South Divisionwith a 44-13 win overClarence.

“We didnʼt make toomany mistakes,”Orchard Park coachGene Tundo said. “Weplayed a pretty goodgame.”

Orchard Park, now 5-0,opened up a 35-7 lead atthe half and cruised totheir Homecoming Dancelater that night.

Tundo said he wassurprised with the bigscore.

“I donʼt think thatʼsindicitive of whoClarence is,” he said.“They are a good teamand we had some thingsgo our way. Weʼre not 40points better thanClarence and I bet theydonʼt feel that wayeither.”

Orchard Park is nowon the doorstep of claim-ing the AA South championship. But Tundo said thatfans in Western New York should wait before awardingany premature titles.

“We have to get to work and get better,” Tundo said.“We need to continue to improve. If we play themagain, hopefully weʼll do that again. But I donʼt thinkthatʼs a given.”

The game with Clarence had taken on added impor-tance after the events that transpired between theteams in the 2010 season.

The “Yellow Jersey Game” at Clarence added somespice to the rivalry. Due to a miscommunication,Orchard Park showed up at Clarence in darn jerseys,

forcing Clarence to wearyellow practice jerseys.

The teams met againin Ralph Wilson Stadiumfor the Section 6 title.Clarence won on a fieldgoal on the final play ofthe game.

“People brought upthe jerseys,” Tundo said,“but the kids never did. Ithink losing at theStadium was on theirmind more than the firstgame.”

Orchard Park certain-ly looked as if they hadextra focus on thisgame. The Qaukersrolled up 495 yards ofoffense, 280 on theground.

Okoya Andersonpowered the first-halfonslaught as he rushedfor 124 yards and 3 TDson just 14 carries.

After Clarence tiedthe game at 7-7,Anderson went to work.

He punched in a 1-yard TD before the endof the first quarter. Herushed in from 9 yards

out for another TD in the second quarter. Anderson gave OP a 28-7 lead when he raced 46

yards for his third straight touchdown. Orchard Parkput the game away right before the half with a TDpass.

“Okoya is starting to run harder and get more verti-cal up the field,” Tundo said. “Instead of trying to fakepeople out, heʼs running North-and-South.”

But Andersonʼs biggest improvement this seasonhas come in the passing game.

“Heʼs getting really good at pass protection,” Tundosaid. “We havenʼt had a sack yet on the season and

Orchard Park running back Okoya Andersonrushed for 124 yards and 3 TDs as the Quakersbeat Clarence last weekend.

heʼs a big reason why. Our QB went 14 of 18 yesterdayand no one even got near him.”

In the Quakers Spread Offense, Anderson is actuallythe player responsible for calling out the blockingschemes for the linemen.

“I hear him talking to the linemen,” Tundo said. “Hecalls out when to slide protect or makes the appropriatechange-ups. Itʼs easier to have Okoya do it because thequarterback is checking on the coverages.”

Anderson has also begun to see the field on defensemore often than in the past. In the win over Clarence,he made 6 tackles, including one for lost yardage.

“He played some great defense,” Tundo said. “He dida great job stopping the run.”

Tundo has sent his star running back in to play line-backer more often this season than in the past.

“He played a little bit of defense last year,” Tundosaid. “He doesnʼt do it full time but as the season hasgone on, we have played him out there more andmore.”

Tundo says that he does not want to wear his powerrunning back out.

“We have to monitor how many times he gets hit,”Tundo said. “Heʼs been getting 15 to 18 carries a game. The more he plays defense, weʼll give him fewer carrieson offense. Some people think heʼs better on defensethan he is on offense.”

Anderson was a finalist for the Connolly Cup in 2010after rushing for 1,443 yards and 21 TDs. He has actu-ally improved this season and has vaulted himself tothe top of the list of contenders for the Cup this fall.

“He works as hard as anybody on the team,” Tundosaid. “Heʼs playing hard and heʼs been a team player.”

Tundo says that Anderson is being recruited by someDivision I programs.

“Thereʼs been a little bit of interest,” Tundo said. “TheSyracuse Running Backs coach came to our school totalk about him. Akron sent some information. I thinktheyʼll be more.”

Orchard Park will now play at Lancaster this Fridaywith a chance to clinch the AA South Division title.

“They have a great program and we respect theirteam,” Tundo said. “We have to get ready for a battle. Ithink they have a dangerous QB and some goodreceivers. They are always well-coached.”

The last time that Orchard Park played at Lancaster, the Quakers lost and had a 18-game winning streakended on a last-minute field goal.

“That was a heck of a football game,” Tundo said.“They made some big plays that night. Hopefully weʼllmake the plays this time.”

The Heart of a Champion Character Playbooktheme is FINISH STRONG!

IT ʻS NOT HOW YOU START THE SEASON, THEGAME OR LIFE…….BUT HOW YOU FINISH!!

This weekʼs FINISH STRONG WORD IS Honesty.

Honesty: is the quality of being fair, real and truthfulwithout giving in to compromise.

(Great peace have those who love the truth and nothingcauses them to stumble.)

Athletes and Coaches: Honesty is not only the bestpolicy; it should be the only policy. The great truth aboutbeing Honest is that Honesty sets you free. You neverhave to look over your shoulder or worry about cameras orradar guns, or officials.

You can choose to be truthful and discipline yourself. Oryou can choose to be dishonest and cheat and have thediscipline come later in the form of a yellow flag or a ticket. The fact is that itʼs not if you will get caught itʼs when.Thatʼs why Honesty will bring you confidence. A man ofintegrity plays or walks securely and whoever is dishonestwill be found out.

John Wooden said, “Honesty is doing the things thatwe know are right and not giving into to temptation….”Therefore, HONESTY SETS YOU FREE….

The cost of regret far exceeds the price of discipline…

So fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep thefaith! Be intense and …FINISH STRONG!

It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;

who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,

so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.

Are You Game?

Starpoint bounced back from a loss to Sweet Home andbeat McKinley 35-28 last weekend and kept their hopes ofgetting to play a home playoff game alive.

Starpoint is 3-1 in A North games, 3-2 overall. TheSpartans will play North Tonawanda next weekend and thewinner will clinch at least one home playoff game.

“We havenʼt had a playoff game at home in, maybe, 20years,” Cavagnaro said. “We havea history of being better in Games5 through 8 and we need to keepthat up.”

Cavagnaro says his teamreceived unexpected help duringthe summer workouts when a play-er from Texas walked onto histeam.

“We heard that we were gettinga new student,” Cavagnaro said,“and when you hear that you aregetting a player from Texas, thatʼsawesome. The coaches really gotexcited. If he played in Texas, hecan play in Western New York.”

And so, RJ Hernandez, whoplayed 5A football for Eagle PassHigh School in Texas, joined theStarpoint program in July.

“He came in to meet with us buthe wasnʼt registered for schoolyet,” Cavagnaro said. “He couldnʼtlift or practice with us but he fit inright away. Heʼs really a great kid.Heʼs funny, heʼs positive. He madefriends right away.”

But once Hernandez was able to join in the workouts,Cavagnaro was impressed.

“Once he got registered for school,” Cavagnaro said,“Holy Smoke... Heʼs the real deal. Heʼs all business on thefield.”

Hernandez, a 5-11, 185-pound junior, lived near the RioGrande River along the border with Mexico. He landed inWestern New York because his father works with the UnitedStates Customs and Immigration Department.

“He works in border patrol,” Hernandez said. “Heʼs origi-nally from Brooklyn and wanted to come back north so hegot a transfer to Niagara Falls.”

Now most people understand that football in Texas is dif-ferent than just about anywhere else - especially in WesternNew York.

Hernandez, however, says that the actual “football” isnʼt

that different. The hype surrounding the game is, well...“Itʼs almost the same on the field,” he said. “In Texas, the

fans are different. The sound of the game is different. Thecrowds for the games here are about the same as thecrowds we get for the intra-squad scrimmage. The serious-ness of football is different in Texas.”

In Texas, football is extremely serious. “After practice, there are a whole bunch of little kids ask-

ing for autographs,” Hernandez said with a laugh. “Thatdoesnʼt happen here.”

Cavagnaro says that Hernandez gave the Spartans a lit-tle bit of an edge that they had lacked in past seasons.

“We have some talent, Cavagnaro said, “but we reallylacked having a guy be a little nasty. RJ has made us amuch more physical team. We put him at middle linebacker. He makes the first hard hit and the other kids start to feed

off of him. He finds the ball.”Cavagnaro said that the other

players noticed and - even thoughhe was the new kid in school -Hernandez was named a captain.

“Heʼs all about football,”Cavagnaro said. “The other kidsliked him and looked up to him.”

One thing that Hernandez hasstruggled with is the Western NewYork weather.

“He wasnʼt bothered by the heatwe had early in the season,”Cavagnaro said. “When it was hot,he was in his element.”

Last weekend, with the tempera-tures in the 40s, Hernandez was alittle uncomfortable.

“The kids teased him a lot,”Cavagnaro said. “Some of themwere going to donate some longjohns for him. He didnʼt want tocome outside until we wereabsolutely ready. He said it was toocold.”

Hernandez was not used to theheavy rains the week before,

either.“I havenʼt practiced or played in rain since PeeWee foot-

ball,” Hernandez said. “Iʼve only seen snow once. I was herefor winter break and it was very cold.”

Once he was on the field, though, Hernandez was backat home.

“He had a great game,” Cavagnaro said. “He had doubledigits in tackles again. Once your playing, the cold goesaway.”

Hernandez says he is not looking forward to his first win-ter as a Western New York resident.

“I have no idea what Iʼm going to do,” Hernandez said.“People have told me about winter. I donʼt know what itwould be like to play football in the snow.”

Maybe, if he keeps making 10 tackles a game, heʼll beable to find out.
