Jackson High School’s Red Devils football team has been suiting up for practice since Aug. 1, and with its first game of the season coming at rival Mary Persons, the team rolls into the fall ready to face a major test. The Red Devils take on the Bulldogs Aug. 26, in Forsyth, opening the 2011 high school football season. Jackson’s first home game will be Sept. 2, against Monticello. Jackson High School Athletics Director and Head Football Coach Mike Parris said his team will be largely a young group of players, filled out by high numbers of sophomores and juniors, after a larger-than-normal class of seniors graduated this May. “We’ll probably start two or three seniors on defense and we’ll probably start three or four on offense, so we’re extremely young,” Parris said. “I think one of the things that you’re going to be able to look at on this football team is, we’re going to get better as the year goes on. That’s what we’ve got to do. We want to continue to get better and continue to get better every day, every week.” Parris said he will be looking for young leadership to emerge from the team, from the likes of returning quarterbacks Ben Cawthon, a senior, and Will

Cook, a junior. He said he believes returning receiver Jarrett Watts and offensive lineman Matt Shadix will also play key roles in getting the offense going. “They’ve been there, and they’ve been through it, and know what it’s like,” Parris said. Of the 72-player roster, Parris said 17 will be seniors this year, and 27 will be juniors. “I think it’s a pretty special junior class,” Parris said. The same roster of coaches will be returning as well, Parris said, including defensive coordinator Mike Eakin, defensive line coach Dary Myricks, offensive coordinator Todd Wells, runningbacks coach Josh Pidgeon, tight ends coach Barron Hamlin, special teams coach Bill Glass, defensive backs coach Cory Johnson, offensive line coach Eddie Snell and wide receivers coach Jeff Myricks. Last year, the Red Devils had five wins and five losses, missing a playoff spot after a lopsided loss to Stockbridge. They’ll be looking for another shot, while facing a schedule of the same opponents as last year. The regular season will wrap up Nov. 4, with a home game against region opponent Eagle’s Landing.

The Red Devil cheerleaders are ready to get the crowds excited at this year’s football games, according to Varsity Coach Shonta’ Sims. The squad has already begun setting goals and making changes for its upcoming season. Not only will the Red Devils be cheering in new navy blue uniforms this year, they hope to use signs to liven up the crowds, get those in the bleachers involved with the cheers, and ultimately show more support for the football team. According to Sims, they wanted to create these signs last season, and this year they will meet their goal. Sims said that the 2011-2012 school year will welcome 27 new cheerleaders to the Red Devils squad. These new members were chosen last March after four days of practicing that culminated in a final day of try-outs. This year’s squad has 27 varsity members and 28 on junior varsity. Sims gave cheerleaders, new and old, a chance to bond and prepare for the upcoming season at a self-hosted cheerleading camp held in June. The girls worked hard at working out new routines, practicing stunts and learning side-line cheers. To improve teamwork and encourage the girls to trust each other, Sims organized several team-building games and challenges for the girls to complete. But the camp wasn’t all hard work: The girls spent a Wednesday night at a luau on the football

field, where they wore bathing suits and grass skirts, cooked on the grill, and set up a water slide. At the end of the festivities, the cheerleaders enjoyed a slumber party in the gym. Several of the girls received awards at camp. During a jump-off competition, Sha’India Grier and Jelinda Ellis tied for first place. Lexi Robbins, Tabby Loftin, Jelinda Ellis, Sha’India Grier, Brianna Strickland and Courtney Chambers were all named All-American Cheerleader. The Outstanding Awards were also announced. Brandi Patterson was named “Most Spirited.” Sha’India Grier was awarded “Outstanding Personality.” The “Overall Outstanding Award” went to Alicia Duke. The Superb Stunt Group Award went to Lexi Robbins, Tabby Loftin, Kayla Singleton and Holly Hollis. Sims is planning several fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for a breakaway banner and other cheerleading needs. The girls plan to sell doughnuts and candy. They will also sell home-game programs featuring the football players, cheerleaders and members of the marching band. Every varsity game will have a cash-prize raffle hosted by the cheerleaders, with proceeds used to support the squad. Sims’ goals for the season are “to promote team spirit, teamwork from all the girls, and positive attitudes on and off the field.”

This is Sims’ second year as head coach of the Red Devil cheerleaders. Her assistant coaches are Amie Partain and Connie Willis. Sims is a technology specialist at the Ernest Battle Professional Development Center. Partain teaches first-grade at Daughtry Elementary School, and Willis is the attendance clerk at Jackson High School.

The Red Regiment is planning a trip to Oz for the 2011 football season. With plans to perform songs from the 1939 musical “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and the 1978 film “The Wiz,” Director of Bands Stan Koterba said that the Red Regiment is aiming to create “more of a production instead of just playing music” at this year’s football games. Songs on this year’s repertoire include “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “Merry Old Land of Oz,” “Ease on Down the Road,” “Home” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” With goals to add more thematic elements to their performance, the group plans to add props and dressed-up characters as the season progresses. Koterba also offers this teaser: “At some point we’re going to add a little surprise to the beginning of the show.” This year the full band has 50 members, including 10 on color guard. The drum line and color guard held try-outs last school year, but the rest of the

band entered without audition. Koterba said the Red Regiment even has two or three new members who had never played their instruments before. The Red Regiment learned new songs and practiced marching during a week-and-a-half-long band camp held during July. Koterba stated, “band camp is usually our hardest week,” saying they spend about 75 percent of the time in the summer heat learning their routine. When practices begin again during the school year, the band focuses on fine-tuning the music. Koterba hopes to raise enough money this year to replace the band’s uniforms, which are about 10 years old. The band tries to do at least four fundraisers each year, including a candy bar sale, a citrus sale when they sell grapefruit and oranges, and a candy sale in the spring. The Band Booster Club also helps financially by running the Red Regiment Cafe concession stand during the football games. According to Koterba, replacing all the uniforms can range from $40,000 to

$50,000.This year’s student leadership for the Red Regiment consists of Drum Major Casey Spear, Assistant Drum Major Marci Thacker, Band Captain David Jones, Brass Captain Jessica Norton, Woodwind Captain Rachel Kirkland, percussion co-captains David Jones and Matt Lehnherr, guard co-captains Kourtney Spence and Brittany Duncan, and equipment officers Cole Conner, Erica Long, Brett Wise and Seth Conyers. “Our band is one family. Our kids can always depend on each other ... Marching band is the best sport in the world because there’s no bench. Everybody is a starter,” Koterba said. Alongside Koterba is Assistant Director Tim Pietrofere, who also teaches band and chorus at Henderson Middle School. Freshman Math Teacher Katie Stewart, and Kourtney Pratt, direct the color guard. Percussion instructors are Chaz Chambers and Jamey Thomason. Lt. Bob Carrick is the police escort. Koterba also receives input from

his consultant, retired band director Charlie Brodie.Members of this year’s Band Booster Club are Angela Kish, president; Harileen Conner, secretary; and Cynthia Lehnherr, treasurer. Former Booster Club President Beth Murphey is the Band Mom. As football season begins, Koterba encourages members of the community to attend the games. “We’re looking forward to seeing everybody on Friday nights, and we appreciate their continued support,” Koterba said.
