Dan Bates is nowcharged with leading aMcQuaid tradition ofpower running withhopes of its first titlesince the 1970s

  • Tosay that DanBates has en-joyed his 30-yearcoaching careerin Section 5might be an un-derstatement.

The veteran offensive line coachhas eagerly awaited the fall so hecould get back on the footballfield to work not only with someof the areas top players, but out-standing head coaches. This offseason though, Batesknew he needed to be morethan just the right-handman onthe sideline. Hewanted to take thelead at one of Section5s most consistentprograms, and helpthem end a section-al drought of 25years.Bates took over atMcQuaid this offsea-son, hoping to leadthe Knights to theirfirst sectional titlesince 1978.McQuaidhosts Canisius (Sec-tion 6) at 7:30 p.m.Friday in their sea-son opener. At first I didntwant the job, after awhile they hadntnamed a head coach and I revis-ited the conversation I hadwith (the schools administra-tion) and decided to step up andtake it, said Bates, who joinedthe McQuaid coaching staff in2010. It was my way of doingsomething for the school andmy part. We have a bunch ofgreat youngmen and they needto be coached.Bates is one of the areas mosthighly respected line coaches, ashis Knights have paved the wayfor some of Section 5s top run-ning backs in recent seasons, in-cluding the Jenkins brothersand Cory Parker. You can expectthe same brand of smashmouthfootball from Bates, who calledthis offense a running backsdream because tailbacks oftenreceive 20 to 30 carries pergame. He fits in with what Mc-Quaid is, said senior kicker

Will Mahar, who is being re-cruited by several Division Ischools. Hes a great guy whohas good faith. Coach Bates isselfless. He is always helping out, extending his hand.We had a lotof seniors step up in the offsea-son and take leadership in ourworkouts too.Senior Dave DAngelo willlook to carry the load for therunning backs, with help fromfullbacks Cole Purpura andZach Poudrier. The talented re-turning skill position playerswill cause plenty of nightmares

for defensive co-ordinators.QuarterbacksJohn VandenBrul and MarkNozzi return af-ter seeing signif-icant playingtime last season.Mahar is also ex-pected to be theteams top receiv-er.We are prettywell-rounded,said Purpura, who also startsat linebacker. Our defense ispretty good.Everything is

coming together, not just thisweek but at camps over thesummer.Despite 15 returning starters(eight on offense, seven de-fense), questions remain abouttheKnights offensive and defen-sive lines, where the team couldhave inexperienced players inkey slots to open the season.Seniors Miles Powe and JoshMoore will anchor the offensiveand defensive lines.Poudrier and Clement Lewiswill join Purpura at linebackerin the teams 4-3 defense. DAn-gelo andMahar lead the second-ary.We had good team chemistrylast year, but this year we had towork on it, Vanden Brul said.So far in camp it has come to-gether much better than wethought it would. The Knights certainly hadtheir chances to break the sec-

tional title drought in four yearsunder former head coach Bob-by Bates. McQuaid lost twice inthe sectional finals and suffereda double-overtime loss to even-tual Class A champion Eastridgein the semifinals last fall.

The Knights have their workcut out for them early in theyear, as they open with one ofSection 6s top programs. Mc-Quaid opens Rochester CityAthletic Association play againstEast, who defeated the Knights

in week six last season. We play tough games, but weare going to do our very best,DAngelo said. We expect towin, be fearless, play our gameand see what happens. We haveto play with no regrets.

The three-way cross-town rivarly that exists between the three high schools in Greece Athena, Arcadiaand Olympia is alive and well. While claiming bragging rights is important, all three programs have theirsights set on bringing a championship back to the town. Jack Haley | Messenger Post Media

    TEAM PREVIEW

Tradition, prideand hard workare three thingsthat define thecommunity ofGreece, and alsothe core princi-

ples of the three head coaches ofthe varsity football teams in thearea. The Olympia Spartans,Arcadia Titans and Athena Tro-jans all travel a similar road asthey battle for area supremacyand a sectional title. The history and success of thefootball teams in Greece runsdeep, withmore than 20 leaguechampionships in the past 40years between the three. Sec-tional titles in high school arehard to come by in any sport, but football might be the mostdifficult with the smaller num-ber of classes and tougher lev-el of competition from top tobottom. Olympias last section-al crown came back in 1997, Ar-cadias in 1988 and Athenas in1981, (Aquinas, which drawsheavily from the Greece dis-trict, has won eight sectional ti-tles since 2000), and every yeareach coach and player givestheir all in hopes their school isthe next to hoist that illusivebanner. There is a great sense ofpride in this community when itcomes to sports, and especiallyin football, said Arcadia headcoach John Lockhart, who is inhis 12th year with the Titans.Regardless of stature or posi-tion, you can never count on awin when you face anotherGreece team. The intensity, toughness and emotion runsmuch higher in those games.TimHill is in his 18th year ashead coach at Greece Olympia, and the Spartans have broughthome two league titles, as wellas the programs lone sectionalcrownwhile on hiswatch.Work-ing through adversity, buildingmental toughness, commitmentand dedication are all requiredto be successful in the game offootball and are all essentialparts of CoachHills approach tohelping his players realize theirpotential and prepare for life be-

yond high school. We setmany teamgoals in thebeginning of the season, andwhenAthena orArcadia showupon the schedule you know thosegames will always mean a littleextra, said Hill. The players, coaches and the fans all take agreat deal of pride in theirschools and those games. Greecehas a lot of great coaches at alllevels, and in all sports, as weneed to remember the commongoal of helping the kids in ourtown become better citizens, community members and peo-ple as we begin talking about animproved facility for the townand its teams to take pride in.All three Greece teams playtheir home games on their ownfields, though each home gamefor every team must be sched-uled for Saturday afternoon be-cause none of the schools havethe lights. In an era inundatedwith budget cuts to sports, arts, music and nearly everythingelse, the committee dedicated tobringing Greece an updatedsports facility hope to affordably, objectively and economicallyprovide its teams a home fieldthey can be proud to defend.Qualifying for sectionals andearning a home game are alwaystwo of our goals when we startthe season, said Athena coachRob Cerone, who is in his 19th

season as head coach and alsosits on the committeeworking toget Greece a new facility. Everygame against one of your cross-town rivals is big and getting awin against another Greeceschool is always good to lookback on at the end of the season. All three coaches believe thatfootball is a great vehicle to helpguide kids on the right pathand teach them commitment, sacrifice, adversity, discipline, toughness (both physical andmental) and how towork togeth-er. They have faced each othernumerous times on the grid-iron and share amutual respectfor one another despite nevergiving an inch to get a win. With 21 teams in theMonroeCounty football league, Arca-dia and Olympia will battle fora championship in Division IIIwhile Athena will look to bringhome the Division II crown. The three schools will crosspaths onmore than one occasionduring the regular season whenArcadia travels to Olympia for ashowdown on Sept. 28 and theTrojans will play host to theSpartans onOct. 12. Each gamewill not only play a role in whichteam becomes the toast of thetown but where they will beseeded come sectional time, as allthree schools find themselves asone of 15 teams competing for

the Class A crown. We always focus on teamchemistry and put an emphasison family and treating each oth-er with respect before anythingelse, added Lockhart. We haveso many great coaches not onlyat Arcadia but all throughoutGreece, and every time you geta win against a colleague whoyou respect it means a little ex-tra.

All three schools are fortunateenough to have had a coach inplace for a number of years, and that stability shows the ath-letes, their parents and the com-munity that we are dedicated toproviding the best coaching andteaching possible to all our play-ers, added Cerone. Every timeyou hit the field you are workingto be the best in the league, thesection and the town.

Forateam that wasseconds awayfrom playing inthe state semifi-nals last year,Eastridge has a lotof questionmarks

in 2013.The Lancers lost 19 seniorsfrom a team that hasnt lost aregular-season game since Sep-tember 2010 and rolled to 10straight wins and a Section 5Class A championship a year ago.Eastridge eventually fell to Sec-tion 6 champion SweetHome inovertime of the Western Re-gional final. The uncertaintydoesnt faze theEastridge players.Callme crazy, butI think states is ourgoal this year, sen-ior slotback/safetyDAngelo Morazasaid.Among the voidsneeding to be filled:running back Jere-miah Ortiz (1,474total yards, 21touchdowns), quar-terback Alec Mor-tillaro (9 yards percarry, 22 totaltouchdowns), line-backer Jake Allen(14.5 tackles forloss), and linemenChyronBrown-Wallace andAlexOfficer (D-I Pittsburgh). The Lancers return E.J.White a senior getting Division Ilooks and juniorsGregHerreraandNico Piacentini on the line, along with senior tightend/linebacker JayshawnPinkard.Seniors Dan Sprague andJametrius Lewis, a transfer fromWaterloo, are battling to replaceMortillaro under center. The rest of the offensive back-field, however, is evenmore un-clear. Coach ChadGreen is look-ing at several players to replaceOrtiz and slotbackNate Corbett. Two other transfers juniorJayvonHampton (Greece Arca-dia) and sophomore C.J. Turn-er (Webster Schroeder) are ex-pected to compete for significant

roles in the backfield or slot, along with Moraza and fellowseniorsMarkayl Armstrong andAlejandro Cruz.Green, now in his eighth sea-son with a record of 47-19, saidroster turnover is nothing new tohim and his staff.Every year for every highschool football team it doeschange up quite a bit, unless youdo have a lot of returners, hesaid. Having their veteran lead-ership is something that weregoing to have those young guysstep in andmake sure they do getto that level.

Moraza said thetraditionally up-tempo Wing-TEastridge offensewill rely evenmore on speedthis year, as willthe defense. If youre not afast-paced de-fense, its going tobe hard to keepup with us, andon defense we flyto the ball everysingle play, hesaid. Were nottrying to mopearound that welost players.Werecomingwith whatweve got. We putin new stuff this

year thatwill help our talent, andwere just doing things to fitwhat we have this year. While trying to look forward, the Lancers havent been able toshake the memories of thatheartbreaking 28-21 loss toSweet Home last November. But instead of dwelling on whatcould have been, theyre using itas motivation. We make sure that wereready for five quarters of foot-ball, Moraza said. When thetime comes and people getthrown in positions, weve got tobe ready to play, because it stillsticks with us.Thats the only thing I keepthinking about, Pinkard said. Idont want to lose any games. Iwant to go undefeated. As his team prepares to face a

Monroe County Division IIIschedule full of familiar oppo-nents including a Canandaiguateam the Lancers pummeled47-7 in last years sectional final Green is keeping his expecta-tions broad.I dont make comparisonsbetween the two teams, he said. But having those young guys

step in and be productive, becompetitive and have good lead-ership, thats what Im lookingfor.Moraza said the team realizesit cant be complacent if it wantsto top last seasons success. We cant just think that sincewewon last year that its just go-ing to come easy to us this year,

he said. What we do in thelocker room and on the field, were working ourselves to knowthat we have to fight for every-thing this year, and every teamis after us this year.Wehave a bigtarget on our back.As long as we play to oursystem and dont ruin ourselves,no team can beat us this year. I

Were not tryingto mope aroundthat we lost play-ers. Were comingwith what wevegot, we put innew stuff thisyear that will helpour talent, andwere just doingthings to fit whatwe have this year.

  • The2012 seasoncouldnt havegotten off to aworse start forthe EastRochester/Gananda football

team. Playing on the roadagainst Wayne, the defendingFinger Lakes East League cham-pions, the Eagles easilymarcheddown the field and scored atouchdown on the first posses-sion of the game. The Bomber players could al-ready hear the rumblings fromtheir disappointed fan base.I could hear it on the sideline, people said another bad seasonfor the ERBombers, said ZachHauser, who will start at quar-terback for ER/Gananda againthis season. After that it was likewe came out and buried them.TheBombers quickly bouncedback, as they returned homewith a 40-12 victory. The winwas only the beginning of whatturned out to be a special season.ER/Gananda won the nextthree games by a combinedscore of 158-12. The Bombersthen lost to eventual leaguechampion Geneva, but theyshowed a keen ability to put de-feat behind them as they even-tually won the Class B title.ER/Gananda will take aimat a Class C title this fall asthey hostMidlakes at 7 p.m. onFriday in their season opener. Anexcellent group of returningplayers has fans of the programhoping the team can not onlywin another sectional title, butgain an elusive league title. The returning skill positionplayers are going to be key forus, saidDennis Greco, who is inhis 21st season as a head coach. We have a ton of depth at run-ning back. Its a great problemto have. Right now we have tosee how our offensive line isgoing to perform. The Bombers never struggledto score points last season, par-ticularly against Livonia in theClass B championship whenthey scored 48. ER/Ganandasbiggest strength last season wasrunning the ball and their potentground attackwill play a key role

in determining if they can fulfilltheir preseason goals.Seniors AkeemHosang, JakeMiller and Nate Teeter lead thestout Bomber backfield. Hauserhas excellent targets in wide re-ceivers Andrew Fischer and Ri-

ley Palmer. Our team is mostly youngerguys, but we do have some expe-rience, said Brendan McDer-mott, senior linebacker/offensivetackle. We have a good, solidgroup of seniors. The younger

guys knowwhat they are doing.Senior center Chase Reevesand sophomore Hayden Ricciwill look to anchor an offensiveline that lost three starters. Mc-Dermott and Alex Brothers areexpected to start up front. The Bombers should scoreplenty of points, but in a leaguewhere teams can score in bunch-es, can theymake enough stopsto win games?Weve just been trying toteach our young guys the funda-mentals, the basic techniquesand how to go hard every play,Greco said. We want to im-prove every day and bring (the

young players) along slowly, butwin at the same time.Themove down to Class C forsectionals will mean plenty ofnew faces come sectional time, including Livingston Countypowers Hornell and LeRoy.ER/Gananda has not enjoyedsuccess against the LCAA insectionals, having lost to LeRoytwice and Cal-Mumonce in pastfinals. It doesnt reallymatter whereyou play in sectionals, Teetersaid. You still have to play yourgames and you have towin to getinto sectionals. Class C is goingto be tough.
