Liturgical ColorsPurple vestmentsand hangings inchurch during Lentmake our eyes takenotice. Before wesing about theseforty days, beforewe notice the Gloryto God is missing,b e f o r e t h e ysubstitute a newGospel acclamationfor that word we’re not supposed to say duringLent (Alleluia) – our eyes have meditated onpurple, and told us a new season has come. Why do we have liturgical colors? Why do theyaffect us? Even in the secular world we associatecolors with particular celebrations: red and greenfor Christmas, purple and yellow for Easter, red-white-and-blue for the fourth of July, white for thebridal gown. Schools have colors, so do doctoralrobes, and of course, sports teams. The early Church used only one liturgical color:white for the resurrection and for the newly-baptized and the new life attained in the risenChrist. Not until the 12th century, when dyes weremore commonplace, did liturgical colors start tobecome law. In the western, Latin Rite (thepredominant rite in the Church) there are fourliturgical colors: white, green, violet, red. (Thereare some 21 Eastern Rites in our Church which useother colors, including blue.) In the Latin Rite, white is used for festive daysand saints, red for martyrs and the Holy Spirit, green for the daily life of what we call “ordinarytime,” and violet or purple for the penitentialseason of Lent. With these four colors, othercolors are often used as trim: such as blue trim onthe white for feasts of the Blessed Mother, andblue trim or bluer hues with the violet for theseason of Advent to distinguish it from thepenitential season of Lent. Liturgical colors helpus meditate on the seasons of the year and themeaning of life.

Pretzels! In medieval Europe when fat, eggs and milk were forbiddenduring Lent, a special bread wasmade with dough consisting ofonly flour, salt, and water. Theselittle breads were shaped in theform of arms crossed in prayer and were calledbracellae (Latin, “little arms”). Among the Germans theLatin word became bretzel, and in England, pretzel. These pretzels were a common Lenten food through theMiddle Ages in Europe, and became a year round snack,in its original shape, only in the 20th century.

Lord God,

Take me where You want me to go today.

Let me meet the people You want me to meet today.

Give me the words You want me to say today,

and the ears to hear what You want me to hear today.

And if at all possible — keep me out of Your way.

Amen.

Lent Is Not A Time of Sadness“Father, each year you give us this

J O Y F U L S E A S O Nwhen we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery

with mind and heart renewed.”Preface of Lent I

In common opinion, the Season of Lent runs the risk of being marked bysadness, by the darkness of life. Instead, it is a precious gift of God. It is an intense time full of meaning in thejourney of the Church. It is the itinerary to the Lord’s Easter. Lent is about putting into practice an attitude of genuine conversion to God – of return to him – recognizinghis holiness, his power, his majesty. And this conversion is possible because God is rich in mercy and great inlove. Lent is a journey of forty days where we can experience in an effective way the merciful love of God.

Pope Benedict XVI on Ash Wednesday 2012

Forty Days of Lent?Q. Lent, the period of prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter, is 40 days long, but there are 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. How can that be?

A. The answer takes us back to the earliest days of the Church. In Judaism the Sabbathis Saturday, the seventh day of the week, and designated as a day of rest and worship, and the first of the two accounts of the creation says that God rested on the seventh day. Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday, the first day of the week, and the apostles andearly Christians saw Christ’s resurrection as a new creation. Sundays then became days

to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. Sunday became the “Sabbath” day for those who followed Christ, and no fasting orpenance was done on Sundays. When the Church established a 40-day Lenten period of penance and prayer in preparation for Easter to mirror Christ’sfasting in the desert before he began his public ministry, Sundays could not be included in the count because Sunday wasthe day of the Resurrection. Thus, in order to include 40 days on which penance could occur, the period had to beexpanded to six full weeks (with six days of penance in each week) plus four extra days – Ash Wednesday and theThursday, Friday, and Saturday that follow it. Six times six is thirty-six, plus four equals forty — the 40 days of Lent!

Are Sundays Part of Lent?Q. Last year my Catholic co-workers and I disagreed over whether Sundays are considered part of Lent. Each year I giveup sweets for Lent, but I have always understood that I could eat them on Sundays during Lent. I would like to know if Iam correct on this issue.

A. Technically, Sundays are not part of Lent. Although we celebrate them liturgically as part of Lent, the Lord’s Daycannot be a day of penance, fast or abstinence. Six weeks of Monday through Saturday give you 36 days. If you add tothem Ash Wednesday and the three days after it, you get the 40 days of Lent. Some people may find it easier or preferable to “give up” something for the entire period between Ash Wednesday andEaster, but you are correct in saying that Sundays are not part of the 40 days.

Was the relaxing of Eucharisticfast regulations an innovation ofVatican Council II?

No. The change in Eucharistic fast regulations was rather

an innovation born of World War II. For centuries theChurch required Catholics in good health to fast frommidnight in order to receive Communion on any givenday. The fast included water, along with all foods andother liquids, and there were no exceptions, not even fora small sip of water taken while half-asleep in the middleof the night. Any intake of whatever kind broke the fast, and one could not receive Communion that day.

The Eucharistic fast was formally enacted into universalChurch law with the Council of Constance in 1414-1418. Before that, local councils had regulated the length andextent of the fast. Now the rule was to abstain from allfood and liquids, including water, from the previousmidnight, until after Mass.

The regulation was changed by

Pope Pius XII (1938-1958) toaccommodate the requests ofmilitary chaplains so that theycould celebrate Mass at anyhour for the welfare of thetroops. But the privilege wasstrictly a military one. Changefor the faithful generally didnot come until Pius XIIapproved evening Mass on holy

days of obligation (that was in 1953), and later when heextended the holy day evening Mass exception to FirstFridays and occasions of religious solemnity (1957).

For ordinary people in the pew, changes in the Eucharisticfast came in two steps. First, there was the apostolicconstitution of January 16, 1953, Christus Dominus, declaring that water did not break the Eucharistic fast —though one still had to fast from food and other liquidsfrom midnight in order to receive Communion. Exceptions were provided for travelers and those engagedin energy-sapping work; they could take liquids (alcoholexcepted) up to one hour before Mass and Communion.

Those relaxations led to Sacrum communionem, Pius XII”smoto proprio of March 19, 1957, which reduced theEucharistic fast to three hours from solid food and onehour from liquids, alcohol again excepted; a three-hourfast was required from alcohol.

In 1964 Pope Paul VI (1963-1978) in turn reduced the

Eucharistic-fast time frame to one hour from solid foodand liquids. That regulation is in place today.

Of course, in apostolic timesand for the early Christians, there was no such thing as aEucharistic fast. The Eucharistwas celebrated in the contextof a meal. Strict Eucharisticfasts developed more than athousand years later. Thegradual reducing of the fastscan be seen as leading up tothe time when the fathers ofthe 2nd Vatican Council (1962-1965) directed that the Massbe restored "to the ancient usage of the holy Fathers." Most material from Facts, Myths and Maybes by John Deedy

Pope Francis recalled how

“Pope Pius XII freed us fromthe very heavy cross that wasthe Eucharistic fast.“Some of you mightremember. You couldn’t evendrink a drop of water (aftermidnight). And to brush yourteeth, it had to be done in sucha way that you didn’t swallowthe water. I myself as a young

boy went to confession for having received Communionbecause I thought a drop of water had been swallowed!

“When Pius XII changed the discipline, some said, ‘Ah!Heresy! He changed the discipline of the Church!’ Somany ‘Pharisees’ were scandalized! But Pius XII hadacted like Jesus, seeing the need of the people — the needof priests who said three Masses, the last one at 1 p.m. ,after having fasted from water and food since midnight.”

The Church’s faithful are not those who cling to accidental elements that were valid in the past but are now outdated.

St. John Paul II Mexico, 1997
