Spring 2015:AMI EB2 20 CVE 3001 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS SECOND MIDTERM EXAMINATION Name: _____________________________________________ This is an open textbook, closed notes examination. You are allowed to use the Units and Dimensions handout, as well as the ENED 1030 Equation Sheet. Answer three (3) of the four (4) questions: attempting all four questions is discouraged, and only the best three scores will be summed. Try not to spend more than 18 minutes on each question. Answer all questions on the paper provided (not on the question paper). Show every step of your calculations to avoid losing points. Moreover, identify the source of each equation you use, by citing the corresponding equation number in the textbook; otherwise, derive any equations you use, showing the derivation in detail. Respond to the questions as posed, not as you prefer they had been posed. 1. Using the method of sections, determine the forces in the members IJ, MC, and MI. 2. Determine the force in each member of the truss shown by the method of joints. State whether each member is in tension or compression. 1

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

SECOND MIDTERM EXAMINATION

Name: _____________________________________________

This is an open textbook, closed notes examination.

3. For the frame shown: (a) Check for static determinacy, determine the support reactions and then proceed to determine the member end forces; (b) Draw the shear, bending moment, and axial force diagrams and the qualitative deflected shape. Note: A is a roller; D is a pin; B and C are rigid connections.

4. For the beam shown: (a) Calculate the reactions; (b) Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams; (c) Sketch the QDS. Note: A is a pin; C is a roller.

5. Optional Bonus Question

(a) Identify ALL zero-force members in the truss shown for the given loading.

(b) In the context of structural analysis, what do the following terms mean?

Isotropic; Planar; Rigid; Redundant; Couple.(c) Identify ALL statically indeterminate frames among those shown below, and provide the degree of indeterminacy.
