About UT’s SDGs

University of Taipei(also referred to as “UT”)as the only municipal university in Taiwan, is a comprehensive university focusing on urban development. Based on tradition and innovation, UT features mastery of teacher training, expertise in athlete training, and specialty in urban development. Hence, UT dedicates itself to quality education, good health and wellbeing, sustainable cities and communities, etc. The university devotes itself to fulfilling social responsibilities, encouraging faculty and students to offer social services, promoting lifelong education and implementing the idea of sustainable development.The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) truly reflect a university's missions for social responsibility and impact. UT holds the same core values to achieve the goals. The report presents SDG-related activities held by UT which demonstrates the characteristics of its sustainable development.

SDG 1 NO POVERTY

End poverty in all its forms everywhere

Providing support structures for students living in poverty, such as scholarships and assistance packages.

UT provides various kinds of assistance for low-income students to help them complete their studies.

Catch sight of international humanitarian issue and development of remote areas

Living in Taiwan, most of us did not experience the oppression by government or war that may threaten our life, but there is no denying that some people are suffering from the oppression somewhere in the world. We invited the speaker, Chun-Yuan Hu, to share her experience when she served as an intern in RepublikaKosovo and lived in a country torn by war.

SDG 2 ZERO HUNGER

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

Achieving this goal means securing access for all to safe, sufficient and nutritious food. This will require resilient agricultural practices and sustainable food production systems.

Students learn to change their own consumption habits to help solve hunger problem and enhance sustainable agricultural development.

Bag recycle, save food

The promotional activities were organized by our students as volunteers and cooperated with the Bow to Land Bazaar, formed by a group of people who care about land and life, aimed to promote the ideas of "small farming", "green consumption", "food independence", and “local agriculture” in order to facilitate the connection between producer and consumer, demonstrate the power of green consumption, and encourage young people involved in the related activities to deliver above-mentioned ideas. These activities could be viewed as health and environmental education. The theme was divided into two parts, namely save food and bag recycle. After completing the adventure task, each participant was able to get a small gift as a reward for the purpose of more participation. At the same time, student volunteers were encouraged to glance at various booths to understand the background of the products or the concepts behind. Through these activities, participants had better understand of the issues such as healthy food, waste reduction, and recycle bag. It is helpful for them to practice in daily life.

SDG 3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Seeks to ensure health and wellbeing for everyone at all ages, including access to safe, affordable and effective health care.

To achieve this goal, work on universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, infectious disease prevention, and the treatment and prevention of other public health issues needs to take place.

UT designs a series of health courses for the general public and shares the sport facilities to the general public who live in local communities.

Sports facilities sharing

The higher education sprout project is set up, and senior people's activity courses are set up regularly. Students come from residents in Tian-mu area. The course is open in the third floor of the Shin-hsin Hall of Tian-mu campus which provides from Physical Education Office. It provides various senior people's physical fitness courses.

Office of Continuing and Extension Education regularly offers swimming courses for residents in Tian-mu. The course is open to the B1 swimming pool of the Tian-mu campus Shin-hsin Hall which provides from Physical Education Office.

Office of Continuing and Extension Education regularly offers badminton and billiards courses. The course is open to the third floor of the Shin-hsin Hall in the Tian-mu campus which provides from Physical Education Office.

Office of Continuing and Extension Education regularly offers tennis courses to the residents in the Tian-mu area. The course is open on the fifth floor of the Shin-hsin Hall of Tian-mu Campus which provides from Physical Education Office.

Tian-mu campus track and field, gymnasium is open to people in Tian-mu area for jogging and walking activities which provides from Physical Education Office.

SDG 4 QUALITY EDUCATION

Ensure inclusive and equitable access to (and completion of) quality education.

This goal promotes the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and values needed to function well and contribute to society.

The targets of this goal range from ensuring universal youth literacy and numeracy, expanding the global number of scholarships available to developing countries and ensuring equal access for all to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education.

2020 Schweitzer service program- JiqingElementary School

There was a total of 102 students participating.

Provides disadvantage students the equal rights of education, and improve their self-identification adaptability.

Provides students the chance of group interaction, cultivate their relationship of interpersonal interaction.

Provides various types of lessons which are close to their lives and accomplish the idea of “life is education”.

The Hsing Tian Kong Culture and Education Development Foundation supporting plan-supplementary educational camp

There was a total of thirty-six students participating.

Conducting various schoolwork guidance during winter vacation. Carrying out the idea of happy learning through game-based teaching.

Adding self-exploration lessons, guiding students knowing themselves, expressing feelings and believe in their own ability. 5. Combining Shao’s featured attractions, deepen the knowledge of local culture through treasure findings, increasing the local identity.

SDG 5 GENDER EQUALITY

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls to reach their full potential is key to Goal 5. The achievement of this goal requires the elimination of all forms of discrimination, violence and harmful practices against women and access to sexual and reproductive health and rights. Work towards this goal will also mean the achievement of gender parity in political, public and economic life.

Students can understand the concepts of gender difference, gender equality, and sex discrimination.

Process and application of campus gender equality event

It is hoped that through this course, the college resource classroom counselors can enhance their understanding of gender equality and improve their tutoring skills on gender issues.

Gender-friendly restrooms

In response to gender equality and diversity, multiple-occupancy all-gender restrooms were built in two buildings of the BoaiCampus.

The restroom construction on the 6th floor of the Gong-Cheng Building was completed in 2016 and that of on the 4th floor of the Fine Arts Building in 2018 during restroom renovation.

There are eleven gender-friendly restrooms,nine single-occupancy accessible and gender-friendly restrooms, and two multiple-occupancy gender-friendly restrooms on the Tianmu Campus.

The University will continuously plan to build these types of restrooms in the future when renovating restrooms.

SDG 6 CLEAN WATER AND SANTITATION

Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.

Seeks to ensure not only the availability of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, but also improvements to the quality and sustainability of water resources. Addressing Goal 6 will involve effective and integrated water resource management and improved sanitation facilities for all. To achieve these outcomes, international cooperation and the involvement of local communities will need to be expanded.

UT checks the drinking water regularly to ensure the quality of drinking water.

The water safety for teachers and students

The University's sewage discharge system has been connected to that of Taipei City.

All water dispensers have their filters replaced regularly and are inspected and maintained in accordance with applicable regulations. Relevant water testing reports have been posted on the water dispensers for users' reference.

Water storage tank cleaning and sample testing are conducted regularly to ensure the water safety of teachers and students. Water quality meets standards.

SDG 7 AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

To ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The achievement of this goal means ensuring access to electricity, clean fuels and technologies for cooking, and increasing the use of renewable energy through both international cooperation and expanded infrastructure and technology for clean energy.

UT establishes the Energy-Saving Action Plan to implement the energy conservation.

University's sewage discharge system

The University establishes the Energy-Saving Action Plan of the University of Taipei every year and will announce and implement accordingly.In recent years, several obsolete, energy-consuming electric facilities, such as air conditioners, water chiller units, and electric lighting equipment, have been replaced by the University.The newly built library is a silver-rated building and has obtained the Smart Building Mark.

Water resource surveillance systems are in place on the campuses. When abnormal water consumption occurs in each building, the personnel can promptly look for potential water leakage and troubleshoot the issue immediately.

The ice-storage air conditioning system in the Shin-Hsin Hall of the Tianmu Campus: The ice-storage air conditioning system is an energy storage system that stores sensible and latent heat simultaneously. The main unit runs during the off-peak electricity times to cool down the water used by the air conditioning system from 12℃ to 0℃ and then turns the 0℃ water into 0℃ ice. During the peak electricity times, the system uses electricity to melt the ice to release cold energy, taking advantage of the off-peak electricity times. The system also helps reduce the electricity consumption of contract capacities and basic utility expenses.

SDG 8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all.

Economic growth and employment are important for reaching the economic security that is crucial to the achievement of Goal 8, as is equitable access to financial services.

To meet this objective, countries and industries must protect labor rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in precarious employment.

Labor rights lectures

Labor Rights Lectures with topics as 1. Overview of Labor Standards Law. 2.Introduction to labor rights such as labor contract and wages. 3.Special Protection Regulations for Female Workers.

The Oppressed theater- business phenomena of the oppressed

The lecturer uses various physical oppression experience activities to make students feel that strong can defeat the strong. When we feel the oppression, our body will naturally fight against it. If the opponent is too week, they will be afraid that if the strength is too great, they will fall down. On the other hand, the experience of following the pressure of the crowd makes the participants more aware that it is not easy to reject a bunch of people, and the blind obedience of the masses. Finally, the Bullying Trilogy provides a more vivid interpretation of various bullying phenomena, including online, physical, and relationship bullying, etc. It is possible to look positively at negative messages, find social support, and break the vicious circle of bullying.

SDG 9 INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

To meet this objective, work must be done to develop and ensure quality, reliable, inclusive, sustainable and resilient infrastructure. This will involve innovation and the creation of new and more sustainable industries, spurred by investments in research and development.

Students are able to propose infrastructure that supports sustainability, resilience and inclusion from where they live.

Cooperation of University of Taipei and Department of Economic Development, Taipei City Government – industry and human resources connections course

“Cooperation of University of Taipei and Department of Economic Development, Taipei City Government –Industry and Human Resources Connections Course.” In order to assist new graduates to take part in the industrial practice certificate course, University of Taipei and Department of Economic Development, Taipei City Government host the industry and human resources connections course. It provides companies with talented technology human resources simultaneously, accelerate industrial upgrading, and solve the gap of industrial and academic needs. After the students who finish this digital professional course, they can attend the certificate examination. While they pass the certificate examination, they can partake in the companies’ follow-up industry match activities with a view to accelerating to improve the ability of the industrial human resources. The planning of the course content aims to two aspects. One is “technical implements”, the other is “Certificate guaranteed”. Also, it encourages new graduates to receive orientation training, offers the needs of industrial human resources, and connects with industries. This course “International Certificate Adobe II” had completed in Bo-Ai Campus from November 17th ,2020 to November 18th ,2020. There were 30 students taking part in.

SDG 10 REDUCED INEQUALITIES

Reduce inequality within and among countries.

Reducing symptoms of and structural factors behind inequalities in income and opportunity, as well as those based on sex, age, disability, origin, class, ethnicity, race, religion and representation are crucial to achieving this goal.

UT has admission policies which is non-discriminatory. The principles of admission used by UT are fair, impartial and open. Besides, for disabled students and new immigrants , UT offers them admission quotas by the specific exams.

Disabled families participate in experiential education and leisure activities-community organization planning experience talks and results sharing

The convener is a teacher of the Department of Special Education and has long-term assignments for the physically and mentally handicapped in the Tianmu campus of the school and the Master of Leisure Education program (hereinafter referred to as the transfer office). Focusing on the adaptation of children and adolescents with physical and mental disabilities, he is also a long-term voluntary consultant for a private organization for parents with disabilities (General Association of Taiwan Children with Hyperactivity Disorder), and has a deeper understanding of the needs of disabled students in schools and communities.

SDG 11 SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

To make cities and other human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable while stimulating innovation and employment. As urbanization rises and transforms societies, the promotion of cohesive city-level strategies to innovate, transform and drive economic and social sustainable development will be key to the achievement of the SDGs.

Students can understand the history of community development and respect cultural heritage.

Urban governance and environmental protection

Invite the Deputy Secretary-General Liu Heran of the New Taipei City Government to come and share his experience in urban governance with students. The theme is to provide students with reflection and feedback on the design aspects of urban planning on environmental issues.

Mr. Chen Guangxiong, Chairman of Guangshidai Construction, was invited to come to the lecture. The topic will be the analysis of future industry trends in smart ecological cities, which mentions the combination of technology and urban development, which has a very future perspective and is deeply loved by students.

SDG 12 RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

This goal presents a challenge to produce and consume less, while meeting other goals related to inequalities in quality of life and consumption. Innovations around sustainable management of natural resources, a reduction in food waste, and an increase in recycling, reuse, prevention and reduction practices will be crucial to achieving this goal.

UT encourages students to think about how to live with sustainable lifestyles and produce the diverse sustainable products and reasonable consumption practices.

Plastics classification

Through sorting plastic labels, we learn about the origin of plastic products and how they are subsequently used sustainably. This not only gives participants a better understanding of the production and flow of plastic products, but also enhances the media literacy of staff and students so that they are not misled by exaggerated advertisements.

Let fashion and environmental protection coexist

In first part, the speaker is the Clothes Telling's founder YU-CHIEH, HUNG who works for Eco-fashion. The speech's topic is making people to understand how waste clothes destroiessenvironment and promoting people's conscious of this issue. The speaker teaches participant how to reduce the damage of wasting clothes and how to reach the goal of clothing reduction by change the way of buying clothes. In second part, the speaker is the perfect image's member HSUAN-TING, WANG. She teaches people the way to find their own style of wearing clothes. In the process, people can learn how to find the consort color, design and collocation of wearing. The speaker hopes that people can buy clothes in more efficient way instead of blind consumption.

SDG 13 CLIMATE ACTION

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

This goal represents a collective responsibility to reinforce adaptive capacity and resilience to natural disasters and hazards related to climate change. Achievement of this goal will require both the incorporation of measures to fight climate change into national planning, strategies and policies and the improvement of awareness-raising, education and institutional and human capacity on mitigation, impact reduction, early warning and adaptation to climate change.

The Department of Earth and Life Science has two laboratories including Climate Change Lab and Sustainable Development Lab. They focus on the climate issues to do the research and promote environmental education.

SDG 14 LIFE BELOW WATER

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

This goal requires government, industry and community acknowledgement of the value and importance of coastal areas and oceans. Achievement of this goal will require collaboration to improve research capacity, scientific knowledge and sharing of marine technology to not only enhance ocean health but also to improve the role of marine biodiversity in developing countries.

International marine education

In the past 50 years, the development of Taiwan has included both continental and maritime cultures, but recently it has also faced problems such as an imbalance between supply and demand in the field of human resources training, the failure of school research and development to be carried out in the field, and the phenomenon of "emphasizing science and engineering and neglecting humanities" in the curriculum. On the other hand, general marine education, which aims to cultivate marine awareness, knowledge and culture among the people, is plagued with problems. Referring to the international trend of marine education, the author believes that there are still many shortcomings in our marine education policy, which should be improved. 1. The policy on marine education is too single-minded and neglects "informal" marine education. 2. Insufficient and poorly utilized marine experience courses. 3. Insufficient marine education orientation and publicity channels.

SDG 15 LIFE ON LAND

Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss.

Goal 15 focuses on managing forests sustainably, restoring degraded lands and successfully combating desertification, reducing degraded natural habitats and ending biodiversity loss.

Crucial to this goal is integrating biodiversity and ecosystem values into local and national planning, poverty reduction plans and development processes.

The geological education visit for eastern of Taiwan

The 2nd Annual International Symposium “Education and City: Participation Practices” was held at MCU from May 16 to 18, uniting researchers from 17 countries: Russia, Albania, Algeria, Belarus, Hungary, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Mongolia, Poland, the US, Taiwan, and Sweden. The co-organizers of the university were Dublin City University, Ireland, and University of Taipei, Taiwan. The objectives of the Symposium included exchange of experience and ideas on contemporary education and urban development, discussion of current issues and search for collaborative solutions, sustaining integration of the cutting-edge Russian and international experience for participatory development of cities and universities.

SDG 16 PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS

Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies.

Goal 16 seeks to promote peaceful and inclusive societies based on respect for human rights, the rule of law, good governance at all levels, and transparent, effective and accountable institutions. For this goal to be achieved, universality is important. Global indicators that allow for context-specific measures and the motivation to act need to be developed. Universal access to justice and information must also be ensured.

The Mayor of New Taipei City, Mr. Hou, from a criminal police to a mayor

General Education Center, University of Taipei, held a series of lecture during each semester. We choose new and impressive topics related to the structure of General Education curriculum, as a line or like a bridge, to link each classified electives. On Dec 6th, 2019, we were honored to have a big person to have an impressive lecture, who is the Mayor of New Taipei City, Hou, yi-ih. He was a criminal police before being the Mayor, and had attended solving many crimes. His criminal police experiences make a big difference when he attends in public affairs and political policies. His policy belief is people always have a believable and happiness life. The Mayor Hou told us, he did the best to understand what the citizens needs and why the problem cannot be solved in the long time, and tried the best to reach the needs and solve the problem, and he will keep doing them. After the speech, we expect the powerful Mayor Hou is full of energy, and keeps doing the best, and citizens in New Taipei City are blessed.

SDG 17 PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS

Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

Goal 17 aims to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. Key to the achievement of this goal is universal partnership, complemented by stakeholder partnerships to share and mobilize expertise, financial resources, knowledge and technology for supporting the SDGs in every country.

UT has academic cooperation and exchanges with a number of leading universities around the world.

University of Alberta ReCon conference

Dean Kuo Chia Hua participated in a seminar hosted by the University of Alberta, Canada, and had academic exchanges with the teachers and students of the school and Dr. Yani, the deputy dean of Waseda University. And was invited to be a speaker on the topic of Exercise against aging: Darwinian Nature Selection between Fit and Unfit Cells in Human Body.

SDGs Micro-Workshop

The Office of International Affairs held a "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Workshop" at noon on December 25. We were honored to invite Prof. Ching-Ping Tung, Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Social Responsibility at National Taiwan University (NTU), and Dr. Chuan-Huang Chung, the Executive Officer of the Office of Research and Development at National Changhua University of Education (NCUE). They shared their experiences and approaches of promoting SDGs for their universities. For UT' s future development in SDGs, we can learn from the outstanding performances and the valuable experiences they shared with us in this workshop.
