Still feeling apprehensive? Here are five tips that will lead to success in any social media channel.

• Be visible. Have a profile picture and a description, and post and interact regularly.

• Be valuable. If you’re going to tweet what you had for breakfast, add a link to a recipe, tell us where you ate and what to order.

• Be generous. Share your knowledge freely.

• Be genuine. Talk about what you’re passionate about, and let your personality bubble up.

• Be patient. It takes sustained effort over time to build your presence on social media, but it will happen.

Social media is really just a more scalable means of networking and connecting with people. If you’re here, you’re probably already good at it, so relax and have fun.

How to Write a Sweet Tweet

Twitter gives you a prompt for writing your tweet: “What are you doing?” You can extend that to, what are you thinking? You don’t have to start out by saying “I am”. Just tell us!

• Use topical hashtags to help people find your tweet

• Give credit—use names and/or Twitter handles. (If you don’t know someone’s Twitter handle, check our guide to the speakers at the conference, or Google their name + Twitter)

• Use a link shortener such as tinyurl. Add the button to your browser to make life easier.

• Don’t just drop links—give us your perspective on why what you’re linking to is important

• Leave enough room for others to retweet

The Art of the Re-Tweet Retweets, or RTs in Twitter parlance, is a re-posting of someone else’s tweet to your following. It can be done with one click of a the button with the arrows forming the square. Retweets create leverage on Twitter. Even if you only have a small following, some of your followers, or your followers followers, might have large followings. In that case, there’s no telling how far your tweet might go! Retweeting other people’s tweets is a great way to make friends and gain followers on Twitter. If you just want to share and have nothing to add, just click to retweet. If you want to add a comment, there are many ways to do so and many thoughts on what the proper Twitter etiquette is for doing so. The main point to remember are to keep the original tweet intact, and to be sure to give credit to the original tweeter using the RT @username format.

Bufferapp is a really helpful free tool for retweeting, as it pops up an edit window where you can work with the original tweet and add your comment. In fact, it makes it so easy to edit that you might be tempted to modify the original tweet, maybe to make it shorter for retweeting or to add a hashtag to alert a new audience. That’s okay too;; in fact you might have seen tweets marked MT—modified tweet. Just make sure you retain the original idea and give credit to it’s author. Here are some good examples of retweets:

What’s a Hashtag Anyhow? People use the hashtag symbol # immediately preceding (no spaces) a relevant keyword or phrase to categorize Tweets and bring conversation around a topic into a single thread. Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end. Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword. An effective hashtag creates a community online. SAP has many such communities and conversations. No one controls hash tags;; that’s why you sometimes see variations on the same hashtag such as #BOBJ and #BusinessObjects, which both refer to the same discussion. Anyone can use or create a hashtag, but some rules of etiquette apply.

• Make sure no one is already using the hashtag you want, or if it is already in use, if it has a meaning other than what you intended. You can do this at hashtags.org

• Use hashtags only when relevant to your message. Adding #LadyGaga to your tweet might get you a lot of views, but if you’re tweeting about analtyics readers will unfollow you. If Lady Gaga became a #BOBJ customer on the other hand . . .

• No spamming. Don’t repeat your hashtag over and

over to get attention. You have to add valuable content around the context of your hashtag for it to gain value

• Limit hashtag use to 1-2 per tweet

Where Do I Find Content?

Tweet what you read. When you find interesting content on the web, share it. Install bufferapp, which allows you to tweet throughout the day. Tweet what you know. What’s your area of expertise? What questions do people ask you?What should people know about your subject? Tweet what you see. Did you know you can tweet pictures? You can! Use your 140 characters to say what it is and why it matters. Tweet what you hear. If you are at a conference like this one, share what you’re hearing that’s new and interesting to you. Tweet what you love. People are drawn to passion. Follow some people who interest you. They will lead you to great content you can repurpose for your own tweets.

Managing Twitter

So what are you going to do with all these followers and followees? And how will you keep up with it all? Twitter is a beast that must be continually fed, but it is time well spent because of the leverage you can get with Twitter. Do you have a message to convey? A blog you write? Presentations you make? Networking to do? If so, Twitter is actually a time saver, allowing you and your message to be in constant contact with far more people than you could on your own. It’s marketing and business development made scalable. Connect with the right people and join the right conversations, and your message can go very far indeed. Here are 4 tools that make Twitter manageable:

1. List feature in Twitter. When you follow someone, or they follow you, you have the opportunity to add them to a list. This is essential to keeping your conversations organized.

2. Hootsuite. Hootsuite is a Twitter client that helps break down your Twitter feeds, followers and topics you are following into one that’s far easier to use than Twitter. When you’ve segregated your followers into lists, you can set up feeds for each list. You can set up feeds for hashtags, keywords or people you’d like to track more closely. Hootsuite is available in free, paid and premium versions.

3. Bufferapp. To get any kind of traction on Twitter, you need to tweet anywhere between 7-11 times a day. That was a daunting proposition until bufferapp came along. This is hands down the best tool for increasing your tweet volume without adding to your work load. Bufferapp adds an icon to your browser, your Twitter feed and some Twitter apps, including HootSuite:

As you are reading on the web, when you see something you like, simply click the buffer button and a tweet window will appear with a pre-written tweet based on the article headline, or material you’ve highlighted in the article. Edit your tweet, and bufferapp will automatically schedule it for you. There is no better tool for building a consistent Twitter presence. If it

did nothing else, that would be awesome enough, but buffer app has a ton more functionality. Stop by the social media lounge for a demo. 4. Mobile app for tweeting. If you’re going to tweet on the go, while you’re out and about doing, seeing and learning as at this conference, you need an app for your phone or mobile device. You can use the regular old Twitter app for free, but for more of the functionality associated with a Twitter client Tweetbot is well worth $3.99 USD. It helps you tweet mobile with hashtag and @username prompts. Not only can you tweet, you can manage lists, follow hashtags and more.
