The shorter days andcrisp temperatures thatsignal the start of fallare upon us, and thereis no better time to takestock of your lawn andlandscaping as you pre-pare for winter. Tack-ling a few lawn andhome care activitiesnow can pay long-termdividends. PLAN YOUR FALLPLANTING
Landscapers agreethat fall is the best sea-son for planting trees, shrubs and perennials,as well as the idealtime of the year to fer-tilize grass lawns, espe-cially in the coolerclimates. Many nurs-
eries and garden cen-ters put plants on salein the fall and most ofthem will be good-sized plants with a fullseason of growth be-hind them, so take ad-vantage of the savingsby getting started early. Plants planted in thefall benefit from coolerair temperatures, not tomention soil tempera-tures still warm enoughto support good rootgrowth. After a winterof dormancy, fall-planted trees andshrubs practically shootout of the soil the fol-lowing spring.TAKE STOCK OFYOUR LAWN
Fall also is a greattime for new grass seedto take root, so con-sider reseeding in se-lected areas. Reseedingalso eliminates areasfor weeds to grow inthe spring. Fertilizeyour lawn one moretime with a high nitro-gen fertilizer to encour-age root growth. Lookfor a lawn fertilizer la-beled “winterizing.”It’s also a good ideato rake leaves and de-bris off your lawn inthe fall. Put some mus-cle into it and rake outany areas where heavythatch has built up. Cut your lawn onelast time after it hasstopped growing, butbefore the first snow.Adjust your mower set-ting to cut your lawn toabout one inch. Lawncare experts suggestdoing the final mowingwith a bagger to pickup cut grass, strayleaves and other debris.
To Aerate orNot toAerate?Lawnaerationinvolvesthe re-moval ofsmall soil plugs orcores out of the lawn.Aerators typically ex-tract 1/2 to 3/4 inch di-ameter cores of soiland deposits them onyour lawn to allow air, moisture and fertilizerto penetrate down tothe root zone. Even with meticulouscare, lawns can thin outand lose color due toexcessive thatchbuildup, hard or com-pacted soils, or periodsof high temperature, high humidity, ordrought. According toThe Lawn Institute, more than two-thirds ofAmerican lawns aregrowing on compactedsoils. These soilsslowly reduce the
amount of oxy-gen con-tained inthe soil,thus re-tardingthe pene-
tration of bothwater and nutrients.Aerating and overseed-ing is recognized byexperts as the besttreatment to controlthatch, reduce com-paction, fill-in barespots and revitalizegrowth. Here are thekey benefits:Loosens compactedsoil and increases theavailability of waterand nutrients. Enhances oxygen lev-els in the soil, stimulat-ing root growth andenhancing the activityof thatch-decomposingorganisms. Reduces water runoff. Increases the lawn’sdrought tolerance andimproves its overallhealth.
The type of grass willdetermine whether toaerify in the fall or inthe summer. Lawnscomposed of cool-sea-son grasses such asKentucky bluegrass arebest aerified in the fall, when there is less heatstress and danger of in-vasion by weedy annu-als. On the other hand,warm-season grassesare best aerified in latespring and summer, when they are activelygrowing. While lawn care andlandscaping routinelytop the “honey-do”lists for fall, there areother home mainte-nance chores that willhelp ensure a warm andhappy winter.

(BPT) - It's easy toinstantly trim your en-ergy consumption andboost the eco-friendli-ness of your home. Thekey to easy energy sav-ings is lighting.Though for manyhomeowners andrenters, knowing howand what to do to im-prove their home'slighting energy effi-ciency can be confus-ing.To alleviate that con-fusion, the AmericanLighting Association(ALA) offers eighteasy energy-savingsteps:1. Replace incandes-cent bulbs with com-pact fluorescents(CFLs). To make animmediate impact onyour energy consump-tion - and your utilitybill - swap out yourmost-used incandes-cent bulbs with CFLs.“It's the easiest way tostart improving yourenergy efficiency,”says Joe Rey-Barreau,education consultantfor the ALA and an as-sociate professor at theUniversity of Ken-tucky's School of Inte-rior Design. If youhave not used any resi-dential CFLs in yourhome, you might besurprised at their rangeand versatility. Thenewest CFLs do notflicker like those ofold, and they havemuch better color qual-ity than even just a fewyears ago. A close lookat the color tempera-ture listed on the bulbpackage label can helpyou get the right prod-uct. “What happens isthat people buy a colortemperature that's toocool, and they ab-solutely hate it,” saysRey-Barreau. Instead, choose a bulb that's la-beled “residentialcolor,” “warm” or “softwhite.”2. Replace dimmableincandescent bulbswith dimmable CFLs.As the color range ofCFLs has improved, sohas their ability to bedimmed, says Rey-Barreau - and dimma-ble bulbs are a provenway to decrease energy
use. However, whilethe technology hascome a long way,CFLs still do not havethe dimming range ofincandescents. “Atabout 20 to 30 percent, the CFL will shut off,”says Rey-Barreau.3. Buy name brands. It is frustrating to in-vest in a longer-lastingbulb only to have itburn out quickly. Toavoid that, buy recog-nizable brands for im-proved quality andcolor.4. Revamp outdoorfixtures. Your outdoorlighting fixture may bebeautiful, but it may bean energy guzzler, too.Start outside as youslowly replace fixtureswith more energy effi-cient versions. Lookfor those that use eitherCFLs or light-emittingdiodes (LEDs), orthose that activateusing a motion sensoror photocell.5. Buy Energy Star-qualified fixtures andbulbs. Energy Star is aU.S. Department ofEnergy certificationmost recognized on ap-pliances - though alsoused on lighting fix-tures and bulbs. “Anytime someone buys aproduct that has theEnergy Star label, they'll know it has bothefficiency and qualityverified,” says Rey-Barreau.6. Retrofit recessedlighting with LED fix-tures. Recessed fix-tures can be easilyreplaced with super en-ergy-efficient LEDversions - without anymessy construction.“You just take off partof the existing fixture, and the replacementfixture fits into the oldhousing,” says Rey-
Barreau. “LED fixtureshave a high initial cost, but the fixture will lastliterally the lifetime ofthe project.”7. Replace yourunder-cabinet lighting. With long life andsuper high efficiency, some LED lightingalso offers fairly easyinstallation, includingpucks and strips usedas under-cabinet light-ing. As an addedbonus, LED lights willnot give off the unde-sirable heat of incan-descents.8. Be realistic in yourexpectations. Whileupgrading some or allof your lighting is agood way to improveyour energy efficiency,it is not a one-stop so-lution. “One of thethings sometimes mis-understood is that peo-ple assume if theyreplace all of their in-candescent lightingwith energy-efficientversions they are goingto save this hugeamount on their elec-tricity,” says Rey-Bar-reau. They will save, ofcourse, but since light-ing only accounts forabout 10 percent of allelectricity consump-tion, the amount savedwill be relative to that. The most savingscomes over the longterm with continuedlower utility bills andfewer burned-outbulbs.Visit your local ALA-member retail show-room to see the newestproducts and to talk toan expert about how toimprove the energy ef-ficiency of your light-ing. (BPT) - One of thehottest trends in homeimprovement is remod-eling with green or sus-tainability in mind.Going “green” meansusing building methodsand environmentallyfriendly building mate-rials that reduce yourhome's impact on theearth, while enhancingthe health of yourhome for you and yourfamily. In a nutshell, remod-eling your home tomake it more greenmeans reducing yourhome's impact on theenvironment (usingless resources such aswater and energy);using building productsthat are made from sus-tainable or renewablematerials; enhancingthe health of yourhome (improving in-door air quality, remov-ing mold and rot); andusing long-lasting, lowmaintenance buildingproducts that don't re-quire paints and chemi-cals to maintain orwon't end up in thelandfill after only a fewyears of use.“The important thingto keep in mind is thatyou don't have to do itall at once,” says JohnGardner, director ofmarketing for APEXSiding System, whichmakes sustainable sid-ing and trim. “You canmake your homegreener over time, proj-ect by project, as yourbudget allows, to in-crease its efficiencyand quality, while re-ducing your home's im-pact on ourenvironment.”Here are some tipsfrom Gardner on howto make your homemore green:Go green today. Youcan start going greentoday by replacing allof your old incandes-cent light bulbs withflorescent or LEDbulbs, or installing rainbarrels under your gut-ters to capture rainwater, which you canuse to water yourflower or vegetablegarden, while reducingyour water bill.”Audit your home. Ahome inspector trainedin green building prac-tices can help you iden-tify what parts of your
home are alreadygreen, how energy effi-cient your home istoday, and what im-provements you couldmake so your homeruns more efficiently.”Consider taking thisstep before conductinga major remodel.Experience in greenremodeling and build-ing. Hire a remodeleror design/build firmthat is experienced ingreen building tech-niques or holds a certi-fication from areputable organizationsuch as from the Na-tional Association ofHome Builders(NAHB).Stamp out moisture.Rot and mold causedby moisture is a bigproblem for manyhomes because it cancompromise the struc-ture of your home andcan create an unhealthyliving environment.Keep moisture out andincrease the air flow ofyour home with low-maintenance sidingsuch as APEX sidingand trim. APEX sidingis pultruded-fiberglasssiding with Ultrex, along-lasting, durablematerial designed witha unique airflow sys-tem that reduces theoccurrence of moistureand mold problems.”Bring in natural light.New energy-efficientwindows can reduceyour heating and cool-ing bills while maxi-mizing natural light toreduce your use of arti-ficial light in yourhome. Integrity win-dows from Marvin, forexample, exceed fed-eral Energy Star guide-lines and are also madeof long-lasting Ultrexfiberglass.”Insulate to keep yourhome warmer andcooler. Make sure theinsulation in the ceilingof your home has aminimum R-38 rating(for cold-weatherstates), and an R-13rating in the exteriorwalls of your home.Green leafy trees pro-vide long-term shadeduring the summermonths, and evergreenson the north side ofyour home block outcold winds during thewinter.”Reduce home mainte-
nance. By remodelingyour home with higherquality, sustainablebuilding materials, younot only can reduce thetime spent maintainingyour home, you can re-duce your use of paints, household cleaners, and other products forupkeep. For example, choosing siding madewith Ultrex, will not rotlike wooden siding andwill not need to bepainted because thecolor is embedded rightinto the pultruded-fiberglass material.
