How would you feel if our country has its own integrated iron and steel industry and we could build our own brand of Philippine made cars that would give Toyota and Mitsubishi car dealers stiff competition?Or our very own inter-island vessels and international world class ships built in our own shipyard? Or a metro-rail transit system that would run from Metro Manila to all parts of Luzon? Or maybe a micro-chip silicon valley type of industry as big as that in Taiwan? Would it be heaven if high electric bills and brown-outs are done away because we have mega-watt power stations that provide electricity at very low cost? How would you feel if all our domestic helpers working abroad and other OFWs can go home to their families because there are enough jobs waiting for them in the Philippines?

All these are possible with the P1.4 trillion annual budget of the country, said Agham President Dr. Gani Tapang. Speaking at last Friday’s Anti Pork Barrel Million March Tapang said, “If only the people’s taxes were spent judiciously and righteously the Philippines would have been industrialized by now.’’ Tapang laments the abuse of power by the elected officials of the land who use people’s money wantonly instead of using it to industrialize and be a world class economy.

According to former National Treasurer Leonor Briones, of the P2.26 trillion national expenditure, P1.472 trillion falls under the General Appropriations Act which is approved by Congress; the following can be considered different forms of pork : P310 billion under Presidential discretion; P2.6 billionPagcor funds; P12 billion Motor Vehicle Users Fund; P26 billion Malampaya Funds; P139 billion again under Presidential discretion; and P72 billion Disbursement Accelleration Program or DAP.

Briones said more than 80 percent of the government’s annual income comes from taxes paid by the people. Ian Porquia, President of the BPO industry Employees’ Network (BIEN) also spoke during the rally.

Speaking for the 700,000 employees in the BPO industry who pay taxes every payday to the government , he said the government has no right to steal their hard earned money. The business process outsourcing (BPO) industry contributes some P17 billion in taxes annually to the government coffers.

Listening to him talk I remember my daughter Stephanie who also works as a call center agent. Dressing up to join the Million March Rally @ Ayala last Friday afternoon I tried to move quietly so as not to wake her. She had just came home from work and she needs to catch up on her sleep. Her next shift is at two the following morning. Sometimes she complains of lack of sleep because of the graveyard shift. When payday comes, she complains about the “kaltas’’ (deductions) , the taxes and mandated monthly contributions that goes out of her take home pay.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillio representing the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called for the scrapping of the pork barrel system altogether. He said the money of the people should be spent for the welfare of the people. The recent revelation of the billion DAP funds is another pork or grease money to bribe lawmakers.

“Buwagin na ang lahat ng pork barrel mula sa pork barrel ng Presidente hanggang sa pork barrel ng mga barangay dahil iyanang sanhi ng korapsyon. Pera ito ng bayan.Dapat sila ay magbigay ng ulat kung saan ito ginastos. Hindi tayo titigil hannga’t hind itatanggalin ang pork barrel,’’ the Bishop said.

Let us pray that our leaders and our people walk in righteousness to attain economic security. Let us practice true devotion to God and His ways.

hearts and mind of the participants and to create an understanding and deeper awareneness of a renewed life.

SARC home-grown speakers, joined by a guest speaker from the Couples for Christ and Light of Jesus community, talked about and shared their own awareness and experience on spirituality and renewal. Highlights of the talks were on God’s plan for mankind, repentance for wrongdoings and turning to Jesus in faith, understanding the gifts of the Holy Spirit and preparing to receive the

empowerment to live a new life. No less than our own Monsignor Dennis Odiver

facilitated the anointing, and imparted his priestly blessing, as well.

A renewed life means a personal relationship with the Lord, a more effective prayer time, becoming better Catholics, better appreciation for the Word of God, and

becoming more active in the parish.

suffering. His feast day is on September 29In honor of this noble and gallant saint, San Miguel

Village held a fiesta last September 29 2013 which started with a procession lead by a marching band dressed in colorful and vibrant attires who paraded along the streets of the village playing difference songs. Following the marching band was a statue of St. Michael adorn with bright flowers. Behind the statue were the faithful, holding their candles as they walked in the procession.

After the procession, there was a Celebration of the Holy Eucharist officiated by Rev. Msgr. Dennis Odiver at the social hall. The hymns in the mass were sung by the San Miguel Boy’s Choir.

Following the mass was a memorable audio visual

presentation done by the San Miguel Sub Parish Youth regarding different residents of the village and their memorable experiences being in San Miguel. There were feelings of joy, laughter as each story as residents listened to these stories.

There was also a banquet consisting of pancit, palabok, barbeque and kakanin prepared for the residents to partake in. Among the other activities were the song and dance program and party games and activities for the youth.

The Fiesta was an overall fun, memorable and exciting event which helped foster camaraderie among the residents. Hopefully in the future, more people would partake in this event so that it will be even more
