Engagement: Al Jazeera interview and tour at Port and LSA

Type: Broadcast (on camera) interview. Crew will gather b-roll footage of tour locations.

Background: Al Jazeera English has been on the ground since soon after the earthquake.According to JTF PAOcoverage by the outlet has been consistently fair with no complaints orback feedback from other units. After speaking with the producerRachel Levin, assessmentis the outlet will give us a more than fair opportunity to highlight our involvement here in Haiti. The fact that we approved and booked their request for interview within 6 hours of initial requestdemonstrates transparency on our part which will begin the engagement on a favorable note.

Outlet angle: According to the producerthe outlet is looking to highlight the US militaryinvolvement here in the country. Rachel stated that many of those she has spoken within andoutside the media have the opinion that the US has taken over the operation here. She is not of

that opinion and is looking for stories that highlight how we are helping where the Haitians andUN do not have the capability or capacity to help. We have the unique opportunity to highlightthe unique capabilities we bring to this operation that not only can be used to sustain our ownforces in countrybut if neededcan be called upon and utilized by the Haitian Government orUN.

Objective: Make Al Jazeeras audience aware of 1)what the JLC is and 2) how we areuniquely qualified and equipped to support the Haitian and international effort not usurp it.

    Themes to highlight:

    This is a global response

    Haitians are helping Haitians

    Ever expanding partnerships

Sustainabilitywe will stand by Haiti in the long run

    Themes we need to counter:

US is taking over the country

US efforts are too slow and disorganized

US is keeping Haitian government and institutions afloat

US Military is an occupying force

    US will rebuilding Haiti

Strategy: Highlight JTF Themes and use compelling imagery of our unique equipment, ongoing partnerships, and young Soldiers on the ground operating in cooperation sith NGOsand Haitians to make things happen. This will be accomplished first with crew taping footage atthe port, an interview at the port, then traveling to the LSA for the same.
