TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek for “thanksgiving.” For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the lan-guage of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. An Invitation to Couples Married Outside the Church

We invite all Catholics who were married outside the Church to consider beginning a process of preparation to have their marriages blessed and recognized by the Church. The name of this process is “Convalidation.”

We will have a Marriage Convalidation Workshop on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 8:45 am – 5:00 pm. Registration can be made by calling Monica in our Parish Office.

We invite couples interested in Convalidation to contact Fr. Paul to meet with him prior to the August 5th date. Please call the Parish Office for an appointment time.

Seven Steps to Convalidation:

1. Contact the local parish for an appointment to meet with the pastor to discuss the process. (If there is a prior mar-riage bond, please let him know since this will require additional time.)

2. Obtain a new copy of the baptismal record for each of the Catholic parties from the church of baptism.

3. Complete the necessary paperwork with the pastor or his delegate.

4. Attend a Marriage Convalidation Workshop. 5. Determine the date, time and most suitable type of ser-

vice. 6. Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as part of the

process of preparation. Quite often, it may have been years since the last confession. The form and words are not important for Confession; it is what is in the heart that counts.

7. Plan a joyful get-together that will follow the liturgical blessing to celebrate the Church’s recognition of the marriage.
