Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us, “My yoke is easy and my burden light.” Those of us who are skeptical and already know the demands of discipleship might ask. “How easy and how light?” The 1930's movie star Mae West (a long time ago!) may have had an answer to that question. Known for her light-hearted, bawdy double entendres, she fa-mously said, “I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it.” Mae would wink and add, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” Another of her famous lines: “I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it.” Mae is correct on all three points. Following Jesus is worth it. Following Jesus is the right way. And avoiding temptation is something we cannot do alone. We need Jesus to prevail. In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives thanks that the little ones understand. They learn with their heart. Many of the Pharisees and others are so bogged down in the rules and regulations that they can hardly grasp what Jesus is telling them. The only way to learn about God is through Jesus be-cause Jesus is the way to the Father. Jesus wants to reveal the Father to all, but perhaps it is only the young that are open to knowing the God of compassion and understand-ing. Jesus offers something that the laws cannot. He offers an easing of burdens to the people. His yoke is easy and his burden light. We are not alone in our burdens. How can we prepare our hearts and minds to under-stand what Jesus is asking? How can we bury our own swords and unstring our harmful bows? Can we string our bows with loving kindness? Can we string our bows with compassion for those struggling to get by with little? Children do not need manifestos on the merits of law. They understand through simple ways. Don’t we find it easier to learn the importance of loving your neighbor through a parable? It’s both memorable and manageable. Aren’t children often less encumbered by worries sometimes listening with their hearts to God’s word. How will you open your heart to hear God’s word to-day? Depending where you are in life the Summer time can be a little more relaxed than at other times of the year. Take time for yourself. You don’t need to go far away on an expensive vacation. A walk on the beach, a stroll through a park or a comfortable corner in your backyard. Pause a little while and listen to the Lord. I remind people often that if they are traveling don’t take a vacation from God or from your Catholic Faith. As you travel check out the different Catholic Churches that you might find in different cities. On Sundays celebrate a Mass with fellow Catholics wherever you might be. Plan ahead and check out www.masstimes.org to find the near-est church and all the Mass times. In our age of technolo-gy there is no excuse not to know where the nearest Cath-olic Church might be in any town. If you will be away for a vacation this summer please do not forget your financial support of our parish. Espe-cially during the hot summer months our utility bills are high because we need to air condition our Church and other buildings. Thank you ahead of time for being so generous. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Protect against potential danger. Taking a few precautions can help children learn to pro-tect themselves against potential danger and ease parents’ minds. Teach children to memorize their full name, ad-dress, and phone number, so they can provide the infor-mation to an adult if they are separated from their parents or caregiver. Instruct children to look for a police officer or other “safe” adult (e.g., a store or park employee) if they need assistance. Teach them how and when to dial 9-1-1. PROJECT RESPONSE

Together, St. Paschal parishioners have donated over ONE MILLION DOLLARS through PROJECT RESPONSE to help those in need in our community. Having said this, we are in a crisis situation. Parish Ministry Informa on Update on Parish Improvement Projects

Just keeping you informed. The church was painted, inside and out, and the doors were stripped and var-nished. The painting project cost $28,000. Extra lighting has been added to better highlight the refurbished Stations of the Cross at a cost of $831. The landscaping has also been improved around the church and other areas of the campus and there is more to come. So far about $2000 has been spent. As I mentioned on several occasions the parking lot is going to be repaired, double seal coated and re-striped. We could not do this sooner because of the school sched-ule, summer school and other parish events. We are scheduling this project for the week of July 24th. The cost is a little over $32,000. Sometime in August the next major project will be the painting of the exterior and most of the inside of the Par-ish Hall. These projects will cost about $25,000. We have a very busy parish with many events. In or-der to not disrupt all of those events I have had to stretch out the calendaring of all the projects. Please be patient. If you total up just these projects alone we will have spent $88,200.00. Thank you for your support and gener-osity that has allowed me to be able to improve our par-ish campus. Father Michael Rocha Addendum: Two other important projects are also being executed this summer. The Mens Club is remodeling several sections of the Parish Hall Kitchen. This will certainly improve our kitchen facilities and assist those that use the kitchen. A major beatification project will soon greet all those that come to St. Paschal’s. The “welcome circle” as you enter the parish parking lot between the parish center and the parish hall is going to be completly redesigned. As part of an Eagle Scout Project, in co-operation with the Parish, a park-like “Shrine to the Unborn” will be creat-ed. In the center will be a 5 ft. Carrera marble statue of Our Lady with the Christ Child placed on a pedestal. The present large pine trees will be removed as well as all the other old shrubs. A tall hedge will planted to form a background to the statue. The space surrounding the stat-ue will be filled with multi-colored rose bushes. The stat-ue itself will be surrounded by an arched arbor with crawling rose vines. The imported (and expensive) statue is a gift from a parish family. People who visit our com-munity will know with certainty that Saint Paschal’s is a Pro-Life Community.

St. Paschal's Respect Life

The Respect Life Ministry next meet-ing will be held on September 6th , at 7:30 in the hall.

A HUMBLE KING

Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today’s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,

and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Rejoice heartily, O Jerusalem! For see, your savior comes (Zechariah 9:9-10). Psalm — I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God (Psalm 145). Second Reading — The one who raised Christ from death will give life to your mortal bodies also (Romans 8:9, 11-13). Gospel — Come, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:25-30). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna-tional Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved charac-ters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times wid-owed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
