Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor A few years ago I was out to dinner with some friends when one of them spotted singer Dolly Parton at another table. Towards the end of our dinner one of my friends got up to go and say hello to Dolly. A few minutes later he returned with Dolly to our table. She asked, “Who’s the priest?” I turned several shades of red and said, “that would be me.” She said, “Well, I need to give you a hug.” I will never forget that moment as well as that hug! Dolly was probably not thinking about today’s Gospel when she said “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” In the first parable today the farmer planted good wheat in his fields. His enemy tried to sabotage the crop by sowing weeds in the fields. The wise farmer decided to put up with the weeds until the harvest. Then he had the weeds removed. Afterward, with full barns he enjoyed the “rainbow” of the good har-vest. The Gospel teaches us that at the end of the world the evildoers will be hurled into the fiery furnace. The saints will shine like the sun in their Father’s kingdom. What might be the meaning today as we listen again to the familiar words of the parables of the wheat and the weeds, the mustard seed, and the leaven? All three para-bles speak of a slow, silent growth. Almost in secret, wheat and mustard seeds planted in the ground crack open to allow a sprout of new life to take hold in the soil. By the time the tiniest green shoot is visible to a pass-ing human, a vast system of roots has already firmly es-tablished itself below ground. Nourished by the roots the plant grows and grows. Day by day transforming itself into something that can bring forth fruit and offer shelter. What might this everyday transformation tell us about the kingdom of heaven’s silent growth in the here and now? The vast majority of Jesus parables deal with everyday occurrence of the people of his time. He was painting a picture for them with subject matter that they knew and had experienced already. Instead of pointing out the fan-tastical, Jesus calls attention to reality. As he tells the crowds in Luke’s Gospel, “the kingdom of God is among you.” In order to live in this kingdom, we need only our eyes to see it and ears to hear. To enter into a parable, one must be willing to let go of the security offered by answers and definitions. What might we discover if we dare to open ourselves to the in-comprehensible mystery of the kingdom of heaven? Per-haps like the seeds of mustard and wheat, we will also experience transformation. The only way to find out is to trust Jesus, the parable of the teller, as he gently calls us to become “parable people.” As parable people we are called to scatter the Good News of the Gospel to others. How, first by the good ex-amples that we set before others as well as a willingness to share our faith. By living and sharing our faith others might become interested in knowing more. Do you know someone like that? Might they want to learn more about our faith and possibly join the Catholic Church? Please direct them to our RCIA program which will be starting soon. Please contact Jazmir Fajardo, RCIA Coordinator, through our parish office. I hope and pray that you are all having a wonderful summer season. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Brush up on water safety skills. Summer is a great time to hit the pool and take a break from the heat. It is important for parents to take a few moments to re-view swimming and water safety with children. Remind them to put on sunscreen. Sign children up for swim lessons or a water safety class. Remember to use age appropriate flotation devices as needed. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Refresh Your Memory About Summer Water Safety,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Summer Staffing Update

We were happy to welcome Fr. Cipriano Dias, O.F.M. Cap (Franciscan Capuchin) over the 4th of July holiday weekend. Fr. Cipriano is from Goa, India. He is presently studying Franciscan Spirituality in Rome. He is visiting us for 3 months before he returns to Rome to complete his studies at the end of September. This past week we also welcomed Fr. Moses Chikwe from Nigeria. Fr. Moses spent several years in Los Angeles and San Diego. Fr. Moses was in residence in my former parish in Venice while pursuing his Ph.D. in Education at U.C.L.A. Fr. Moses will be with us until the end of August. Having both of these fine priests with us will be a blessing for our community and will also allow Fr. Toribio and myself some needed vacation time. I would ask you to welcome Fr. Cipriano and Fr. Moses to St. Paschal’s with open arms. Please make them feel at home as much as possible.

The Men’s Club would like to take a moment to share, and reflect upon, the very special year it has been over the last 12 months, now that July is here and we transition to a new arch-diocese calendar period. The past year has been filled with fun, exciting, and very successful events - such as the Fall Fest/Car Raffle, Golf Tournament, Super Bowl Party, Lenten Fish Frys, Family Movie Night, Casino Night, Pancake Break-fasts, Member of Honor Dinner, and Conejo Food and Wine event, among others. It was an honor and privilege to serve those in need during the Christmas season with a toy drive and Children's Christmas Party, (benefiting over 600 families), assisting St. Vincent de Paul with food collection (filling their onsite pantry to capacity), and donating food to 180 families during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. With God’s blessings and the incredibly generous support of you, our SPB parishioners, and our countless friends, sponsors, and support-ers of St. Paschal Baylon, the Men’s Club was able to contrib-ute over $139,000 to our parish and school, educational schol-arships, and our outreach program - benefiting over 20 local organizations. Our 2017 Outreach Program consisted of dona-tions made to support boy/girl scouts, hospice care, foster care, food banks, religious education, respect life, convalescent care, youth ministries, and cancer support. Our Men’s Club organi-zation is only able to make these contributions because of your financial support and participation in our events, the countless hours from dedicated parish and school volunteers, the hard work from our membership, and the exceptional support and assistance from Father Michael, the entire parish office team, and school faculty and staff. We are truly blessed to be part of the special community at St. Paschal Baylon and look forward to another great year in 2017-18! P.S. - All men of the parish (18 years and older) are invited to participate in the Men’s Club. Join us in our mission to be “Men of Faith, Serving God’s People”. Please come to our next meeting on Monday, August 7th at 6pm in the Parish Hall. We look forward to seeing you there!

St. Paschal's Respect Life

The Respect Life Ministry next meeting will be held on September 6th , at 7:00 in

Room 1 in the Parish Hall.

Blood Drive: St. Paschal’s will be holding their next Blood Drive on Sunday August 13th in the hall from 7:00am to 1:00pm. If you have not donated since June 18th you are eligible to do-

nate. There is always a great need for blood and your help will be greatly appreciated. If you can help in this very worthy cause you may call Gene at 805-497-7029 and schedule a time convenient for you. Sign-ups will also be taken after all Masses on the weekends of 7/23, 7/30 and 8/6. THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD

The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God’s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God’s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God’s might, but is a direct result of God’s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet un-derstand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weak-ness. This is our hope: God’s mercy, power, and love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 23, 2017 Those who are just must be kind.

— Wisdom 12:19

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — You taught your people that those who are just must likewise be kind (Wisdom 12:13, 16-19). Psalm — Lord, you are good and forgiving (Psalm 86). Second Reading — The Spirit comes to aid us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27). Gospel — Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teach-ing them of the reign of God (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna-tional Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

For centuries, the only Eucharistic Prayer we heard as Western Catholics was the old Roman Canon, usually recited in a low voice by the priest, in Latin. By the 1940s, many Catholics were learning to follow along with the actions of the priest by means of a bilingual missal, with Latin on one side and English on the other. Drawings of the priest’s posi-tion at the altar, moving from one side to the other, or bowing or standing with uplifted hands at the center, helped the readers stay on track. The Roman Canon is a long prayer, and since it was done every day for every occasion, priests had a way of gal-loping through it. Even though long, its structure is fairly simple, with the consecration and sacrifice clearly marked out. Sadly, this surviving prayer had triumphed over many treasures of our tradition that emphasized other dimensions of Eucharist. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in 1963 did not call directly for new Eucharistic Prayers, but that direction was inevitable. Discussion began almost immediately, and by 1967 the Vatican approved three new Eucharis-tic Prayers. In 1974, the Congregation for Worship unveiled the experiment of two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation, and three for Masses with Children. At last, a period of creativity and enrichment had begun. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
