What a horrifying situation to imagine for ourselves, standing outside knocking on a locked door only to hear the Lord respond, “I do not
know where you are from.” In the first reading from Isaiah, God says, “I come to gather nations of every language.” But some resist this
invitation. In order to join God’s gathering we must “enter through the narrow gate”; we must say yes to the relationship that God wants
to have with us. This relationship requires us to humble ourselves as Jesus did in his life. By his life Jesus shows us that the narrow way
is the way of humility and obedience. Do we have the humility to accept that we do not know what is truly good for us and rely on God’s
guidance and direction in our lives? In the Gospel, those who are eternally shut out from the kingdom of heaven respond to Jesus saying,
“We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.” Their own words condemn them to remain separated from
God. They knew Jesus and they heard his teaching, but they failed to respond. How do we respond to Jesus today? We hear Jesus speak
to us through the Scriptures, the Ten Commandments and through the teachings of the Church. For example, He teaches us to respect the
gift of life and to uphold the dignity of marriage and sexuality. Our government and the secular world do not accept these teachings as
true and have enacted laws against God’s teaching. God tells us that life is from conception to natural death and forbids us to kill inno-
cent human life. God has given us the gift of our sexuality and teaches us that a man and a woman are to share this gift only in marriage.
Are we humble enough to accept that an infinitely good, all knowing and loving God knows what is best for us? Now is the time to
choose! Will we follow the narrow way of humility and obedience to God and the Church? We have this earthly life to decide. At our
death we will clearly see God in His glory, who in this life we see only by the eyes of faith. Upon seeing God clearly we will all want to
be with Him. Yet it is our choice to accept and follow God’s will now in our earthly life that will allow us to recline at table with Him in
heaven. It is not an easy choice and will require us to endure pain and suffering at times in our lives. These require us to be humble and
obedient like Christ, obedient even unto death. Let us pray for the virtues of humility and obedience so that we may recognize our de-
pendence on God and respond by faithfully following His guidance for us through the Church. At this Eucharist we pray for the grace to
persevere in our commitment to God so that we may never be shut out from the Kingdom of Heaven. Fr. Dallas
You are invited to join our Vocation Ministry Team

cations” on Sept. 11 at 5:30 pm prior to Mass.

A NOTE FROM SISTER MARIE
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Father Dallas and
all the wonderful parishioners of St. Mark’s Parish for the
special blessing at Mass, your many kind notes and gifts
and the delightful gathering at the Parish Center.
The dedication and blessing at the flower garden was so
special, meaningful and thoughtful. This quote from
Louisa May Alcott says it all: “Love is a flower that
grows in any soil, works its sweet miracles undaunted
by autumn frost or winter snow, blooming fair and fra-
grant all the year, and blessing those who give and
those who receive.” My ministry at St. Mark over the sea-
sons of the past twenty-seven years was truly a gift to me.
Know that I only leave you physically and will always re-
main with you in spirit, prayer and love. Sister Marie

VOCATION CORNER
A Prayer for Vocations
Holy Spirit, stir within us the passion to promote vocations to the consecrated life, societies of apostolic life, diocesan
priesthood, and permanent diaconate.
Inspire us daily to respond to Your call with boundless compassion, abundant generosity, and radical availability.
Help us to remember our own baptismal call to rouse us to invite the next generation to hear and respond to Your call.
Inspire parents, families, and lay ecclesial ministers to begin a conversation with young Catholics to consider how they
will live lives of holiness and sacred service.
Nudge inquirers and motivate discerners to learn more about monastic life, apostolic life, missionaries cloistered con-
templative life, and evangelical Franciscan life.
Ignite our Church with the confident humility that there is an urgent need for religious sisters, brothers, deacons, and
priests to live in solidarity with those who are poor, neglected, and marginalized.
Disrupt our comfortable lives and complacent attitudes with new ideas to respond courageously and creatively with a
daily ‘YES!’ Amen.
[from the National Religious Vocations Conference]
St. Alphonsus Liguori, patron of vocations, please pray for us.
Rides to Mass
Celebrating Sunday Mass as a community is a wonderful
blessing for all of us. But we have fellow parishioners who
do not drive, and therefore cannot participate in our com-
munal celebration. Please consider assisting a home-bound
parishioner by driving them to the Sunday Mass of your
choice. Volunteers do not need to commit to driving every
week. For more information about serving the parish com-
munity this way, look for pamphlets in the church or con-
tact the parish office at 864-7686 or [email protected]

Collect Prayer of the Mass, 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time
O God, who cause the minds of the faithful to unite in a single purpose, grant your people to love what you command and to
desire what you promise, that, amid the uncertainties of this world, our hearts may be fixed on that place where true glad-
ness is found. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, for ever and ever.
