PASTOR’S NOTES

I  hope  you  have  been  able  to  pick  up  a  brochure,  Our Capital Campaign, and take a look at the proposals and descriptions in it.  (It  is also on our web site, www.sfx‐lg.org.)     The larger drawings continue to be in the transepts of church for you to see.  This is the result of our Master Planning over the summer and it offers some possibilities for us to consider for a Capital Campaign.    You may remember in our Parish Prophetic Plan we imagined the possibility  of  a  campaign  to  meet  some  of  our  needs  for  our ministries  and  activities,  to  reach  out  to  others,  and  to  celebrate our  125th  Anniversary,  which will  be  in  October  of  2015.      Your response to these proposals is essential in continuing our mission and  planning  for  our  future.    After  giving  some  thought  to  these proposals,  fill  in  the  survey  that  is  on  our web  site.      If  you  are unable to do that, we will have printed surveys available in church for the next two weekends.    Some of you have submitted questions about these proposals and the  possibility  of  the  campaign  itself.    There  were  a  few  in  last week’s bulletin, and here are a few more.     Explain what the changes are in church. In  option  A  and D, there will be new, accessible washrooms close to the church, in the Multipurpose Gathering Space, which connects the church with the Education Building.     Also under consideration is a medium size, 2‐3 tier platform to the west/St. Joseph side of the altar to accommodate the children and adult  choirs  that  help  us  pray  on  the  weekends.    It  will  most probably  reduce  little  or  none  of  the  seating  now  available,  and needs more planning and designing to see if it will be possible and still keep the integrity of the interior and altar space. Like all other options, this is a proposal, not yet a plan waiting for execution.     Is there air-conditioning in school in these plans? That  is not included in these initial proposals.     Is there an afterschool program?  Beginning  this  year,  the Day School has begun a before‐school program, and is considering an afterschool program  for next year which  is more complicated.  Right now it is too early to make that decision.  It may or may not be possible.   

Today’s  readings  focus  on  the  fruits  of  faith  and  obedience.  Naaman  did  as  he  was  instructed,  no  matter  how  reluctant  or skeptical he was.  The ten lepers did as they were instructed, to go show  themselves  to  the  priests.    We  often  don’t  understand obedience  in  today’s world.   As children we do as we’re  told.   As adolescents or post‐adolescents, we rebel.  Part of that rebellion is forming our own separate  identity.    Sometimes  that  formation of identity  causes  people  to  reject  their  faith  and  their  faith community.  Obedience is the practice of a disciplined person, who in faith, trusts God in all things and situations.  I  imagine how challenging it would be to be in Naaman’s place or the lepers’ place.  They were outcasts and physically suffering.  In suffering,  God  can  lead  us  to  trust.  Had  the  circumstances  been different,  their  reliance  on  God  would  be  different.    We  often question the presence of suffering in the world.  I know at times in my  life  that were  incredibly challenging,  it was  the suffering  that allowed  me  to  find  God.    It  also  made  me  more  compassionate, kind,  and  patient.    Finding  God  in  the  darkness,  allows  us  to  be grateful to God in the light.  The second reading tells us “the word of God is not chained.”  The 

  If we build a new gym, how much would we save in rent at other gyms?    Right  now,  other  gyms  are  rented  for  some  of  the practices  needed  by  our  basketball  and  volleyball  teams.    These rentals  cost  between  $1,800  and  3,300  per  year  over  the  last  5 years.    By  the  way,  did  you  notice  that  in  all  four  options,  the existing  gym  would  be  renovated  and  re‐purposed,  hopefully making it possible to use the gym AND Joyce Hall at the same time, with  less  noise  being  transmitted,  though  not  completely eliminated?   Why not two (or more) floors of parking? That  would  be  a great help, but you’re the first person to suggest it, so it didn’t get into the proposals!  We’ll check into that.     Please provide an explanation of the relationship to Ascension-St. Susanna. People are familiar with St. Agatha, but not necessarily Ascension-St. Susanna. It  is  located  in  Harvey,  Il.,  and the pastor is Fr. Thadeo Mgimba.   Fr. Thadeo is also the pastor of the neighboring parish in Markham, St. Gerard Majella.    

We were  asked  a  short  while  ago  to  consider  twinning with  Ascension‐St.  Susanna,  and  soon  after  that,  we  were requested  to participate  in  the Archdiocesan Capital Campaign.    I asked  if  we  might  direct  part  of  our  capital  campaign  funds  to Ascension‐St.  Susanna.    There  are  about  250  families  there  (and about 250 at St. Gerard’s) so their income and resources are pretty limited to meet many maintenance needs.      I am meeting with Fr. Thadeo  later  this  month  and  I  will  let  you  know more  after  we meet.     

Your questions are important and helpful.  More to come next week.    Your  interest  in  your parish  is  admirable.    It  gives  it lots of energy and makes a number of important things happen.  Not  to  perch  on  our  laurels,  but  did  you  know  that  the National Blue Ribbon Award which our  School has  received  this  year,  has been  given  to  only  7,000  out  of  135,000  schools  over  the  past         20 years?  And that there were 50 private/parochial schools given this honor this year?   God bless all of you for your huge effort and your  great  accomplishment.    You  help  make  St.  Francis  Xavier School the exceptional school it is.   

healing God offers to each of us is unchained.  All we have to do is accept  that  healing  in  faith.    True  obedience  frees  us  to  live unchained, trusting in God.  True obedience is listening to the voice of  God  speaking  to  us  through  others  and  following  God’s direction.  When Jesus tells the Samaritan, “go, your faith has saved you,” He’s not referring to saving the  leper  from physical suffering.    Jesus  is proclaiming  salvation  and  eternal  life.    All  ten  were  physically healed,  only  one  returned  to  receive  eternal  life.    The  same temptation captivates us.  If we become so focused on the physical suffering, we miss  the opportunity to be with God eternally.   Our challenge  is  to  glorify  God  in  all  things,  the  blessings  and  the challenges alike.  The  Samaritan  returning  was  unexpected.    He  fell  at  the  feet  of Jesus and thanked Him.  Who is the unexpected person in today’s world that we see fall at the feet of Jesus and Glorify God?  Who do we see return to Elisha glorifying God?  How can we be the one to turn back?

IMPLEMENTING OUR PROPHETIC PLAN

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS RCIA

The  Rite  of  Christian  Initiation  for  Adults  (RCIA)  is  the official process of welcoming adults into the Catholic faith.  It is modeled after the process used in the early Church for the initiation of new members.  RCIA is also the model used for receiving into full communion with the Catholic Church those  persons  who  have  been  previously  baptized.    They could  be  Catholics who  have  lost  touch with  the  Catholic Church or  they might be Christians who were baptized  in other  faith  denominations.  Those  who  have  not  been confirmed  in  the  Catholic  Church  will  receive  the sacrament  of  Confirmation  as  a  sign  of  full  membership into the Church.  The  first phase of  the RCIA process  is called  the period of inquiry.    During  this  phase,  those  who  wish  to  become members of the Catholic Church are called Inquirers.  They spend  this  time  learning  about  the  Catholic  faith.    They learn  about  our  history,  beliefs,  rituals,  spirituality  and much more.  This is a time of learning and of forming close relationships with members of the parish and with God.  On  October  7th,  the  RCIA Ministry  Team welcomed  eight Inquirers who seek  to enter  into  the Catholic Tradition of Faith.   As they begin their Spiritual journey, together with their  team  members  and  sponsors,  please  embrace  their pilgrimage and pray for them.  

 COLLECTION FOR

PROPAGATION OF FAITH  Next  weekend  our  parish  will  celebrate  World  Mission Sunday.   This year we are  invited  to act  in  solidarity with missionaries in India and throughout the world.  Every day, faithful missionaries are reaching out in the name of Christ, offering  practical,  emotional  and  spiritual  care  to communities,  children  and  families  in  desperate  need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances. For more information visit:  www.IAmAMissionary.org. 

  The  drawings  of  proposed  improvements  are  in  the transepts of  the Church  for  your  review.   These drawings are also available on our website (www.sfx‐lg.org) and in a brochure, Our Capital Campaign, which you can pick up at the back of Church, if you have not done so already.  Please review and consider these proposals.  We would like to have your input as to which proposed improvement you would  like  to  see  and would  be willing  to  support  at  the Parish.    To  gather  your  opinions,  a  survey  is  available  on our website or,  if you prefer,  in paper copy at  the back of Church.   Please take the time to provide us your input.  Although the final proposal which we choose to implement will  probably  not  have  everything  each  of  us  individually would  like,  hopefully  we  can  collectively  come  up with  a plan  that we  can  all  support  and  get  excited  about.    Your wisdom  and  input  is  needed.  God  bless  you  for  your commitment to the parish!

5TH GRADE SERVICE THEME     

The  5th  Grade  service  theme  is  honoring  veterans  and active duty service members.     As a part of their plan they will be writing letters,  sending care packages to active duty members  overseas  and  having  a  Veteran's  Day mass  and reception.  If you know of any active duty members to send letters/care packages from our 5th Graders, please provide his/her contact information to Megan Carmody by email at kmcmfc@sbcglobal.net.  In  addition,  we  are  looking  for names of local veterans to invite to our veterans mass and reception  in  November.    Any  additional  information  you can provide about these veterans is helpful.

 Proud Moment for SFX!

  Last  Friday  afternoon  we  opened  our  doors  to  welcome family,  friends,  and  honored  guests  arriving  to  celebrate our 2013 Blue Ribbon award.  The  gym  was  polished  to  perfection  and  elegantly appointed  with  beautiful  blue  touches.  Student  greeters stood outside the gym ready to personally greet VIP guests and escort them to their seat of honor on the stage and the balcony  was  filled  to  capacity.  Out  of  town  alumni  and viewers  tuned  in  via  High  School  Cube  to  watch  the festivities. There have been over 1,000 views already!   Lights! Camera! Action! Ms. Rodde and Fr. John welcomed a stage full of VIP guests: the principals  from St.  Ignatius, Nazareth, Benet, Fenwick, LTHS;  former SFX assistant principal and current Director of  Curriculum  and  Instruction  for  the  Archdiocese  of Chicago Dr. Noreen Powers; Regional Director for the Office of  Catholic  Schools  Mr.  Matthew  Banach;  Village  of LaGrange  President  Mr.  Tom  Livingston;  Village  of LaGrange  Trustees  &  SFX  parents  Mr.  Mark  Kuchler and  Mr.  Jeff  Nowak.  After  an  opening  prayer  and  a wonderful acknowledgement of success and excellence, Fr. John  welcomed  Cub  Scouts  and  Boy  Scouts  to  lead  the assembly  in  the  Pledge  of  Allegiance.  Then  Mrs.  O'Mara took  the  stage  and  inspired  us  all  as  she  shared  some impressive information behind the Blue Ribbon Award and explained just how amazing of an honor it is that SFX won the  award.  In  closing,  she  reminded  us  that  this  is  the beginning  of  a  journey  ‐  we  must  continue  to  strive  to maintain the excellence we have achieved.   Ms.  Rodde  eloquently  expounded  upon  our  wonderful students and offered a sincere "thank you" to all  teachers, staff,  students,  and  parents.  We  were  then  read  a wonderful  note  of  celebration  from  Sr.  Mary  Paul  by Matthew Banach and honored with a special proclamation from  the  Village  of  LaGrange.  Then  students  from Kindergarten  through  8th  Grade  shared  meaningful reflections on what SFX means to them. As the celebration was  coming  to  a  close, we were  treated with  an  amazing video celebrating SFX!    Finally,  in  closing,  Ms.  Rodde  extended  her  thanks  and appreciation  to all  for helping  to make  the day  so  special. Just  before  students  were  dismissed,  a  rumble  from  the back  of  the  gym  was  heard!  The  8th  Grade  varsity cheerleaders jumped to their feet as Mrs. Bryks played the SFX  Fight  Song  and  Francis  the  Falcon  entered  the  gym! Everyone was soon on their  feet singing and clapping and shouting  "Francis,  our  school  of  gold  and  blue,  Francis Falcons faithful, always loyal to you!"  It was an  incredible way  to end BLUE WEEK and an even better way to begin our year of BLUE! 

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD

 The Word of  the Lord has a message  for  children as well  as adults. Children’s Liturgy of  the Word offers  the children an experience to hear the scripture in words that they can understand. Here at St. Francis we are fortunate and proud to have adult volunteers and Presiders of Liturgy who journey with our children so that they can experience the Word of the Lord with a message that is relevant and fitting for them.  Our  Saturday  evening  5:00  p.m. Mass  offers  the  opportunity  for  children  in  Grades  Kindergarten—Fourth  to  experience hearing and reflecting on the Word of  the Lord  in a way that  is an empowering experience.   Children  in  these grades are invited to follow their Reflectors of the Word to a prayer space away from the gathered assembly to hear the Scriptures in words they can understand.  Children’s Liturgy of the Word will “kick off’ this school year on Saturday, October 5.  Allen Sterwalt, our Director of Music, and our Cherub Choir  (Children  in Grades 1‐3) will  lead us  in prayer with music.    The  following week  the  SF Choristers (Children  in  Grades  4‐8)  will  do  the  same.    Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place in church whenever the children’s choirs lead us in song/prayer. The Scriptures we hear will then be taken from the Children’s Lectionary and the homily will be given in a way that children are able to relate to a little more readily. The children in Grades K‐4 will go to their prayer space on the Saturdays that the choirs are not singing.

PARISH COUNSELING PROGRAM

 As we celebrate over  fifteen years of partnership between the Claret Center and St. Francis Xavier Parish, I would like to highlight the services available to you and others  in the community  through  the  Parish  Counseling  Program.  This program offers psychotherapy services  that  integrate both psychology and spirituality using a  faith‐based approach.  I will  be  supporting  the  St.  Francis  Xavier  Parish  as  your Parish Counselor until  June of next year and can offer you and  your  loved  ones  flexible  daytime  or  evening appointments.  Here  are  some  common  areas  of  concern  that  counseling can address:  

If you are struggling with an addiction If you are feeling sad, anxious, and/or depressed

lately and don’t know what to do If you are stressed by problems at work or have

recently lost a job If your children are having problems getting along

with other family members or their peers If you have trouble controlling your anger If some recent or past event has changed your life

and you are having difficulty adjusting If you are dealing with a serious illness or have

recently lost someone close to you If you are struggling balancing the demands of your

life such as raising children, maintaining a career, nurturing a marriage, and/or caring for aging parents

Golf  Foursomes  and  Sponsorship  opportunities  are  still available  for  The  Legacy Guild  Fall  Golf Outing  on  Friday, October  18.    Help  provide  college  scholarships  for  local students who have lost a parent.  For more information go to http://www.thelegacyguild.com, or please call Bob Bock at 708‐646‐9047.  What is The Legacy Guild?  The Legacy Guild  was  formed  in  2012  by  LaGrange  area men  drawn  together  after  a  cluster  of  sudden  and unexpected deaths of treasured friends and neighbors. The organization formed within weeks of these tragic events to offer  support  to  each  other  and  transcend  our  grief.  Our support  group  is  Christian‐based  and  meets  regularly  to discuss  important  issues,  including  how  to  be  a  better father,  husband,  son,  brother,  neighbor  and  friend.  The scholarship  program  is  an  extension  of  these  regular meetings.  Scholarship  applicants  must  live  in  Lyons Township  District  204  and  have  had  a  parent  die  while being  raised  in  the  area.  While  students  must  live  in  the District,  they  remain  eligible  if  they  attend  a  high  school outside  the  District.  The  awards  are  determined  by  a committee based on merit and need.

Awakening the Dreamer Symposium

BRINGING CHILDREN

TO CHURCH  Few  things  are more  important  than  bringing  children  to church for our Eucharistic celebration.  God bless all of you who  do  this.    It  is  the  best  way  for  them  to  learn  and experience  our  gathering  as  a  community,  our  prayer  of thanksgiving  and  our  being  sent  to  do  God’s  work  in  the world.    It  certainly  brings  joy  to  my  life  when  you  bring your children with you.   Of  course,  I  understand  if  you have  to  take  your  child out into  the  vestibule  for  any  reason.    Sometimes  they  get anxious and just need to get up and move around and that’s just fine. The Eucharist is a profoundly sophisticated ritual which  takes  time  and patience  to  assimilate  and  integrate into our lives.  Look at how it has deepened over time in our own lives as adults!  The fact that you parents are able to get everybody up and moving in the same direction at the same time astounds me and I am sure that it pleases God!  Keep coming back!

 We  invite  all  to  register  as  parishioners.  If  you  are  not receiving periodic mailings from the parish, you are not  in our  database.  A  registration  form  can  be  picked  up  at  the back  of  the  Church  or  printed  out  from  our  website, www.sfx‐lg.org.  To help with our planning, we also ask that you let us know about your children, so that they can also be included in the database.  Sometimes  children  are  baptized  elsewhere  or families move into the parish after their children have been baptized. Consequently, we don’t know about them until  it is  time  to  register  for  the  Day  School  or  for  Religious Education. Again, the registration form available at the back of  the  Church  or  on  the  website  can  be  used  for  this purpose.  Thank  you  for  helping  us  keep  our  information  as  up‐to‐date as possible!

MARRIAGE Please call the rectory office at the time of your engagement to schedule your wedding.   We  ask  that  you  are  a  registered  parishioner  for  6 months  before requesting your wedding date.  Saturday wedding times are 1:00, 3:00 and 6:30 p.m.   Rehearsals are usually  scheduled on Friday evening.    Some Fridays and Sundays  are  also  available,  but  these days  and  times  are  limited.   We do not schedule weddings during Lent. We are glad to review possible dates with the bride or groom. Please schedule  the church before you sign a contract with a banquet facility.  

FOOD PANTRY The St. Francis Food Pantry is open every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.  The pantry serves clients who live in the 60525 and 60526 zip codes. Contact Mary Freeman  at  708‐352‐0168  or  mfreeman@sfxlg.org  if  you  would  like  more information.   

HOME OR HOSPITAL VISITATION & COMMUNION CALLS If you would like a priest or Minister of Care to visit, please contact the Parish Office  directly.    In  the  case  of  hospitalization,  specifically  request  that  the hospital  contact  the  parish.    Hospitals  do  not  routinely  inform  churches  of admissions due to Privacy Laws.  

PARISH COUNSELOR All  counseling  services  are  confidential,  respectful,  understanding,  and  take place  in  a  safe  environment.    Counseling    and    psychotherapy    services  are available    for  individuals,  couples,  and  families  experiencing  difficulty  with anxiety,    depression,    grief,    relationship    conflicts,  work  stress  or  job  loss problems,  or  feelings  of    being    overwhelmed.    For  further  information or  to make  an  appointment,  call  our  parish  counselor,  Karen  Held,  773‐643‐6259, ext. 31 at the Claret Center.  

BULLETIN DEADLINE The  deadline  for  submitting  all  bulletin  articles  is  9:00  a.m.  on  the  Monday preceding the Sunday of publication.  If a holiday falls on a Monday, articles are due by 12:00 Noon on the previous Thursday.  All articles must  be emailed to bulletineditor@sfxlg.org.
