29th Sunday in Ordinary Time,
Is 53:10-11Ps 33:4-5 , 18-19,20,21 Heb 4: 14-16 Mk 10:35-45 or 10:42-45
Today we hear from one of Isaiah’s four Suffering Servant songs . This mysterious is sometimes under-
stood to be figurative but is also identified with the prophet, the people of Israel, Moses, and Jesus. In
Today’s text we are told , “The Lord was pleased to crush him in infirmity”(V10). The suffering of the
servant “ shall justify many” (v11). A term that is more inclusive than it sounds. Also found in the narra-
tives of the institution of the Eucharist, “ many” means that Christ’s death has universal significance .
We have been reconciled to God through his suffering.
The writer of Hebrews speaks of Christ as our “great high priest who has passed through the heavens”
(v14). Having “been tested in every way”, he can “ sympathize with our weakness”(v15). Because of
Jesus’s death, we can “confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy” (v16). As the Jewish
high priest offers sacrifice on behalf and allows us to approach God’s throne.
Throughout Mark’s Gospel we encounter numerous scenes that display the fact that Jesus’s disciples do
not understand what he is trying to teach them. Today’s Gospel is another example of that as James and
John approach Jesus asking to “ sit one at your right and the other at your left” (v37) when he enter into
his glory. Jesus tells them that it is “not mine to give”(v40), for he must defer to the will of his Father.
Then he tells his disciples that true greatness is found in service:”whoever wishes to be great among you
will be your servant” (v43). As he is about to “give his life as a ransom for many”(v45),so they are called
to spend their life in service of others. This is true greatness .
For Reflection: What does Christ’s suffering means to me? Who in my life has been an example of what
Jesus considers true greatness?
Please note that “Prayers for the Sick” will be announced from the altar for 4 weeks. Then the names will be in
the bulletin for another 4 weeks. Please inform the Rectory if you wish to add a loved one for prayers, or to have
someone’s name removed. Please note that “Prayers for the Sick” will be announced from the altar for 4 weeks.

October 18 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time:
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples: “ Anyone among you
who aspire greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank
first among you must serve the needs of all.”
When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you
no longer use the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give
hope to your neighbors who have nothing.

SOCIAL MINISTRY HAPPENINGS
Special appreciation to all who took a Thanksgiving Bag to fill!!! This is a great
help to our plan to provide for one hundred families. Some of our people are older
couples with just two people but they are some of the most appreciative of clients.
These couples are trying to live on very limited income. Many receive about $700
or $800 per month on Social Security the very small rental takes most of their in-
come.
If you have not returned your Thanksgiving donation please remember that we ap-
preciate them on before Sunday November 15. If you wish to donate a “food store
gift card”, to provide for a turkey or small ham simply put it in the bag along with
the food. Whatever donation you can afford is greatly appreciated.

Reflections on being with Pope Francis
As the golden clad doors of St. Patrick’s opened and the Pope’s was
Acknowledged by all, through my eyes I did not see “Francis the man” but saw
and felt the Apostolic See. The Apostolic successions of our faith came to life
through the presence of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. To pray with him, in night
prayers, sharing that time in space was most inspiring and thought provoking, as it
became apparent in what we as clergy sincerely mean to all of God’s creations.
The following day being selected as one of his Deacons in the distribution of com-
munions of the faithful; within me through further reflection it brought to life
chapter six of the Acts of the Apostles, and the dedication of our Blessed Deacon
Stephen.
I would like to share my inner most feelings as I savor my solemn moments of true
unworthiness. What I experienced over those two days with him-just to be in his
presence brought me to a deeper understanding of why God chose me to honor His
son. I can humbly say on the second day, during the celebration of the Mass I was
blessed to stand alongside the Patron Saint of Deacons, St. Stephen and in the
presence of the Bishops and all the Priests we walked in the Foot Steps of the
Apostles. In our journey we honored St. Paul’s words in his letter to the Corin-
thians as he spoke of Faith, Hope and Charity, with the greatest of being love.
Together on that day Gods humble servants compassionately presented the love of
Jesus Christ to all.
Thank you for all your support…… Deacon Peter
