REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB RSYC MAGAZINE NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2011 1
Dear Fellow Members
As we move into the last two months
of 2011, it's good to take a quick
review of our key achievements and
activities since this RSYC Committee
was elected in late June. For me as
the rookie Rear Commodore, it has
been a most interesting learning
experience as a first-time flag officer
of this distinguished yacht club.
We completed the 2011 annual
RSYC Regatta in July, much thanks
to my predecessor Karl Nilssen
who led the team as chair of the
organising committee. Keeping
our traditions is a much cherished
endeavour. This month we also kept
up another tradition at RSYC when
we held our annual Charity Cruise
by taking out to sea two dozen
boys and girls from two welfare
homes for a fun Sunday. I was most
impressed that many members
stepped forward and joined the staff
and other volunteers in this annual
outing – this time to the popular
Pulau Hantu venue where a lovely
buffet and some organised games
gave the children a memorable day
on the beach. Special thanks to the
ten boaters who offered their boats
for the day, and to the 15 jet-skiers
whose machines brought thrills to
the kids.
Perhaps the most satisfying
experience these past two quarters
for the Club is to witness the rising of
one-half of the Dry Stacker building
up to the roof level. A five-storey
steel structure, it now dominates
the immediate area around the
Club. If all goes well, by the time
you read this magazine, we hope
to obtain permission to temporarily
use the stacks to house some boats,
so that construction of the second-
half of the structure could begin
immediately.
You never know the problems
associated with such a project until
you serve on the Committee. The
physical constraints on the very tight
site were and still pose an immense
challenge for the contractor and
all those members involved in this
undertaking. But finding practical
solutions to such problems, and
overcoming them, is most satisfying.
You can follow the progress reports
of the continuing Development of
RSYC in this magazine and on the
Club's website.
While the completion of the Dry
Stacker is still on track, we are
now working on the target date of
Christmas Eve for the handover of
this structure. We should be able
to announce details of the official
opening of the Stacker building in
the next magazine. Meanwhile,
suggestions from members are
always very welcome.
Looking forward to the upcoming
events, may I ask you to join in
some of the seasonal celebrations
that are coming up. Our GM and
his management team have been
working tirelessly these past weeks
and these happenings are worth
noting and need your support.
The Christmas F&B offerings are
especially good this year, so do
come and celebrate with us. The
year-end “countdown” to welcome
the New Year 2012 has some new
features too. So I look forward to
seeing you at the Club as you and
your families and friends get into
high gear for the festivities.
On behalf of the RSYC Committee
members, I wish you the best during
this coming holiday season.

Dear Members of RSYC,
The last few months have seen a hive of activities at the Club. The Oktoberfest was a resounding success with all who were there raving about the food, the lively band and the great atmosphere. The Charity Cruise saw an overwhelming response from both boaters and jet skiers. The boys and girls, whom we invited from the two homes, had a fantastic time. The photos of these events in the following pages will give those who missed them an idea of the great time everyone had. I thank all Members who supported the past events for their participation.
And the fun continues. Coming to the school holidays, we have lined up a host of activities and events for families and children. Educational tours bring your children on overnight tours to Underwater World and to the zoo and to a visit to the Main Fire Station.
The second Wine & Cheese Party of the year is also coming up and
we have timed it such that it is the ideal period for you to stock up on wines for the festive season. Use this opportunity to order your wines at that party, as they are all sold below retail prices.
Talking about festive season; we are shifting into an even higher gear, as we get ready to offer you the annual Children Christmas Party, delicious Christmas menus and, of course, the always popular take away offer.
Rounding up the year will be the Glitz & Glam New Year's Eve party. You will enjoy a family buffet in the Wharf while being entertained by our performers, or have a romantic and quiet dinner at the Bridge before joining the fun at the Wharf where our live band will keep you going and on the dance floor until the early hours of the new year.
I encourage you to book for these events and activities early to make sure you are not disappointed.
For the latest updates on RSYC events and activities, please visit
regularly our Club's websitewww.rsyc.org.sg
With this last message of this year, all that remains is to wish all members and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2012.

DEVELOPMENT
Dear Members
I'm happy to report that one half of the Dry Stacker building (Zone B) is almost completed and we are now waiting for the Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP). If everything is in order we can expect the TOP to be issued by early November 2011. Upon receipt of the TOP, the plan is to move the boats out of the Zone C area to the new stacks and surrounding area in order that construction of the 2nd half of the Dry Stacker can begin immediately. We are still on track and the target date for the completion of the entire Stacker building is by end of December 2011.
The first of the two forklifts ordered from Wiggins Corporation (www.wigginslift.com) has arrived from the USA. The Marina Bull LoPRO forklift will be assembled on site and commissioning is expected by end of October 2011. Training on the use of the specialty forklift will be conducted immediately thereafter by management. Boaters and members who want to have a better understanding of how our new operation will be like can view a similar marina dry stack operator at www.baysidemarine.com. There are many such operators around the world.
Construction of the Accommodation Wing extension continues unabated. The diversion work for existing underground facilities has been completed and work has begun on the lift shaft for the 2nd lift that will service the expanded Marina Lodge. We are still looking at the original completion date of end of July 2012 for the handover of this Wing. When completed, the expanded Marina Lodge will have about 60 rooms and suites.
Members and friends are encouraged to visit our RSYC website at www.rsyc.org.sg regularly for photos and news on RSYC.

TitanicThe Artifact Exhibition
Friday 25 November 2011, 10.30am to 1.30pmat The ArtScience Museum (Marina Bay Sands)
This Exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of Titanic's dramatic voyage in April 1912, is designed to tell the incredible human stories from the legendary RMS Titanic Maiden voyage.
The use of authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations combined with compelling stories of the passengers and crew have made this exhibition one of the most successful exhibitions in the world with more than 25million tickets sold to date.
Items from the ship construction, vials of perfume from a maker who was traveling to New York to sell his samples, china etched with the logo of the

HERITAGE
The Singapore Straits Regatta (SSR), Singapore's major keelboat racing event, is now entering its 18th year when its annual running is held from 26 to 31 January 2012. And the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club
has the honour of organizing this coming regatta, in close collaboration with half a dozen sailing clubs or marinas, and in association with the Singapore Sailing Federation.
How did it all begin? The SSR had its origin almost two decades ago, when in the early 1990s, the idea of a yachting regatta of international standing in Singapore waters was mooted by a handful of local sailing enthusiasts. Sailing was still a relatively new sport attracting mostly expatriates and a handful of local die-hard sailors.
In 1995, SingaporeSailing (previously known as the Singapore Yachting Association and started by former RSYC Commodore Jack Snowden) got together with three clubs – Raffles Marina, Nongsa Point Marina jointly with Riau Yacht Club in Batam, Indonesia, and Changi Sailing Club – and organised the first SSR, promoted as a regatta of international standing.
Since then, the regatta has grown steadily in stature and become more renowned. In 1999, the RSYC, having just moved to new premises at West Coast Ferry Road, joined the three original founding clubs to run the SSR. Later, the Singapore Armed Forces Yacht Club (SAFYC) joined in too, making their debut appearance as an SSR organiser in 2004. This year we see for the first time the involvement of One Degree 15 and Marina at Keppel Bay.
The Lipton Challenge Cup and the Perpetual Cup Rules
Arguably the most prestigious and beautiful challenge trophy for yacht racing in the region, the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Trophy is presented to the overall
winner of a series of three races: the Raja Muda International Regatta in Selangor, Malaysia, the King's
Cup Regatta in Phuket, Thailand, and the Singapore Straits Regatta in Singapore and Indonesian waters.
About Sir Thomas Lipton and his Cup
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1850, Thomas Lipton was a grocer and tea
planter. From humble beginnings, he made his fortune in America as a tea merchant. But he was also an exceptionally keen yachtsman and took part
in the famous America's Cup yacht races – not once or twice, but five times, in five different yachts, all named Shamrock I to V. He lost five
times! However, the American public was so impressed with his
gallant display of sportsmanship, that it awarded him his very own trophy.
After gaining a knighthood in 1898, Sir Thomas Lipton presented a beautiful trophy that bears his name to the Royal Singapore Yacht Club

in 1923. Sir Thomas died in 1931. This trophy survived the ravages of war during World War II and is kept and displayed in RSYC to this day.
In 1996, RSYC offered the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup as a perpetual challenge trophy to the then Singapore Yachting Association (now SingaporeSailing) on a permanent loan. In that year, the trophy was awarded to the winner in the Racing Division A of the Perpetual Cup Series. This series presently comprises the Singapore Straits Regatta, the Raja Muda Regatta and the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, all taking place in the months of December and January.
Perpetual Cup RulesThe South East Asia Perpetual Cup Series has been
organised by the organising committees of the Raja Muda International Regatta, the Phuket King's Cup Regatta and the Singapore Straits Regatta in order to promote participation in the three regattas, each offering its own unique attractions. The participating regattas have formed a joint committee to supervise the Series.
The rules as applied by the Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and any amendments thereto to the individual regattas, shall govern the Series. Any yacht qualifying as a Racing Class Yacht in accordance with the NOR and SI of each of the three participating regattas and is scored as a competing yacht shall be eligible for the South East Asia Perpetual Series.

Rainbow Warrior II, the iconic ship used by the Greenpeace movement to campaign for environmental issues, was berthed at RSYC for several weeks last August. Having visited us a few times in past years for re-supplies, this was the last visit for the famous ship as an environment campaign vessel.
The ownership of the 55-metre (181 ft) 3-masted schooner has been transferred to a charity organisation based in Bangladesh named
Friendship. It will undergo extensive modifications and re-fittings, and will operate as a floating hospital off the coast of Bangladesh to help needy families. Renamed "Rongdhonu" (rainbow in Bengali), the future hospital ship is expected to start its new life in April next year.
Originally a fishing trawler, Rainbow Warrior II had a colourful existence since Greenpeace acquired it in 1977 and re-launched it the following year to campaign against
nuclear testing in the south Pacific, and other environmental issues. A new 58-metre (190 ft) sailing ship, Rainbow Warrior III, has been built in northern Germany and Greenpeace expects to continue its mission with this new ship. Pictures here show the recent changeover of Rainbow Warrior II's owners.

Will Writing:Who gets the Money?Saturday 17 September 2011
An education talk on Will writing was held at the Bridge restaurant on 17 September 2011. Mr Patrick Chang, a professional will writer, had an attentive audience as he ran through the common misconceptions about the subject of Will writing. He said about 80% of all working adults in Singapore do not have their Wills written yet.
A former bank and insurance executive, Mr
Chang has been helping people write their wills for the past 10 years. He explained the Intestacy rules under the Intestate Succession Act and the amounts of asset distribution in different situations if there was no will.
He touched on the importance of appointing an appropriate person as executor and/or a trustee or guardian if there were young children as possible beneficiaries. There was a Q&A session after the talk that proved quite informative. The event may be repeated next year if there is sufficient interest.

Kids Love Cooking
Pizza Making WorkshopFriday 9 September 2011
13 enthusiastic and excited children signed-in at the
Bridge Terrace on the morning of 9 September 2011.
Each child got dressed into their chef's hat and apron,
preparing themselves to plunge their hands onto the
dough, making their own pizza, with the guidance of
Chef Martin and Chef Daniel.
One of the kids mentioned that this experience will
give him the opportunity to make a lifetime of pizzas.
So now, kids no longer need to “Dial–A–Pizza”, they
can “Make–A–Pizza”!
Join us for the next “Kids Love Cooking” class. More
information can be found at the RSYC website.

REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB RSYC MAGAZINE NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 201128
This year's Charity Cruise was held at Pulau Hantu on 16 October 2011. The beneficiaries were Jamiyah's Children Home and Children Aid Society, bringing together more than two dozen children, ages 8 – 16years. This Charity Cruise has been awarded as a reward to these selected children for good behaviour at the Home.
The response from our members this year has been overwhelming as we had ten motor yachts and fifteen jet skis joining us for this trip and all were out to give the children a great time. For many, it was a “first time” experience to gain exposure to such activities.
Nevertheless, the jet ski rides were the highlight of the day! The faces of all the children were filled with excitement and thrill as they waited in anticipation for more than one round on the jet ski. In addition, a special lunch buffet was prepared on Pulau Hantu. Upon returning, nuggets, waffles & ice-cream were served at the Wharf to great cheers by the children.
The children and participants came back exhausted, but extremely satisfied. Committee Member Mr. Wee Keng Hwee wrapped up the day with a “Thank You” speech and the children thanked the boaters for making this day a memorable one.
Many Special Thanks To AllMembers who have contributed their time, energy, money, boats and jet skis that had made this event a success:

“I’d planned our course meticulously, but kept it a secret from the kids. I could sense their excitement, when a mysterious island appeared on the horizon.
