Kilkenny’s yearly Santa 5km Run will take place again this December. All proceeds go to Cois Nore Cancer Support Centre Kilkenny. Due to the popularity over the last two years Santa suits won’t be provided so you are encouraged to dress up as festively as possible. Prizes for the best dressed on the day. It’s really great fun and its not competitive at all it’s just a bit of fun so if you have been a long time runner or you are new to running you are welcome. It’s not just for humans either dogs are allowed (or cats if you can make them!). Put it in your diary and get cracking on your Santa suit!

moths against the GlassMoths Against Glass is an anthology of new Irish writing, it’s got all the ingredients to stir, soothe, amuse, and probe. Moths Against Glass is written by the Two Roads group of NUI Maynooth. The students come from Tipperary, Carlow, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow and Kilkenny. They study, write and agonize once a month at NUIM’s Kilkenny Campus. From domestic to exotic settings, from brash and comic characters to quiet and more sensual moments, this anthology will keep any discerning reader entertained into the New Year and beyond. This new publication will be launched at St. Kieran’s College on 14th December, come along to hear readings. The book is priced at €10. It will be available in local bookshops in the above counties,

as the authors are responsible for distribution. The book is designed by Julie Lombard – it’s beautiful! It’s published by Kilkenny Campus Press, and is dedicated to the ‘people of Syria all those who fight to express themselves freely.’

Kilkenny’s Christmas Market - ‘At the Heart of Kilkenny City’ Weekends from December 1st through to December 23rd 2012 at The Parade, Kilkenny.Gifts, Craft, Food, Music, Children’s Entertainment and much more….The festive market will see a variety of traders selling a range of Christmas gifts, stocking fillers and local seasonal food in beautifully decorated log cabins on ‘The Parade’ a bustling market area at the heart of Kilkenny City.To ensure a really festive atmosphere, there will be carol singers and musical entertainment on hand. Musical entertainment includes the Kilkenny Gospel Choir who will perform Christmas favourites and also the fantastic Kilkenny Brass Band. There will also be daily kids storytelling with Mrs. Claus, kids festive workshops and lots more!

mount Juliet Mount Juliet will host its Christmas Village again this year from December the 8th to the 23rd. It will be packed with Artisan food stalls, toys and much more. Also returning is the Santa Train which is an hour long experience around the walled estate of Mount Juliet,

Tis the season…

This party season it’s all about the glitz and glam. The more shimmer and glitter you’ve got, the better! It’s the time of year that we can go OTT and get away with it. I would like to share a few of my favourite make up products that I’m using at the moment, and each and every one of them are perfect for the festive look.

Base & Foundation

First off, start with a good base. I’m using smooth skin perfecting primer by NYc in shade 684. It gives a nice dewy undertone without looking too much like edward cullen

in the sun! And at €3.49 it won’t break the bank.

secondly, a good foundation is key. Invest a few more cents in foundation, because you usually get what you pay for. I love Hello

Flawless Oxygen Wow by Benefit. Oil free, full of nutrients, anti aging qualities, and sPF 25, this is more than just a great foundation. You can tailor the coverage by applying more or less, and it will last all day.

Eyes & Brows

This pallet from NYc is my number one product right now. At just €3.99, this is a steal. It comes in a variety of colours which are tailored for blue, brown and green eyes. I chose the brown

eye pallet, and although I have blue eyes, I found the colours warmer toned which suit the look I want to achieve for this time

of year. It contains a contour colour, highlighter, illuminator, base, and a gorgeous burgundy shadow. I also use the deep brown contour shade to fill in and shape my brows. Here’s a look at the finished product. Don’t forget to add some false lashes to finish the look.

Lips & Nails

It’s all about mauve, reddish and burgundy tones this season. Opt for a nice shade of nail varnish to match with your lips. I am wearing ‘Tell me a berry tale’ lip colour by catrice, and ‘savile row’ by Nails Inc to match. burgundy shades add instant drama and are less harsh and easier to wear than black. I would like to end this month by wishing all our readers a beautilicous Christmas! I hope your stockings are bursting with some of the fabulous products we’ve seen over the past few months.

3. For a festive approach to the trend, why not try these mirrorball leggings by maison margiela for H&M. They offer a little christmas glitz and by pairing it with a simple tee and blazer, you’ll still have your christmas sparkle but subtly so. 3. Of course a little black dress is never far from anyone’s wardrobe and even more so at christmas time, but instead of sticking to the traditional, why not try out some of the more embellished numbers? From leather and baroque, to peplum and sequins, River Island offers all, and for quite a tasty price too.This sheath dress won’t stray far from the traditional yet the decoration

What first got you interested in Rugby?I played a lot of sport when I was in secondary school and when I saw a poster for a ladies team in Kilkenny RFC I decided to try it out.

What was it like playing for Ireland?It was such an honour really. I made really good friends and improved my game. However once I stopped playing at that level, I appreciated that it’s not something everyone can do (for lots of reasons) and I feel lucky that I had the opportunity.

Was it tough working as well as keeping up your training?It was just what I did! When I was in the thick of the season I didn’t really think about it. I enjoyed the varied training and I needed to do it to make the Irish squad. All of the training was with people that became close friends too, so even weights sessions could be fun. Once it didn’t take from my job, I didn’t mind. Now that I don’t have to do all that training, I don’t know how I could go back to my old routine.

Do you think there is enough support for women’s rugby in Ireland?There is support there but it’s inconsistent and hasn’t improved the way I hoped it would have by now. There was a time that the Irish women’s team was not under the umbrella of the IRFU and in some ways, there was more freedom in when the squad could train. Now that the IRFU are involved, the set-up is more professional. Accommodation and food is provided for the squad in training but this costs

money and so limits the frequency of the training sessions. From a club perspective, I’ve been lucky that Kilkenny and UL Bohs are supportive to the development of the womens teams in the club. I chose my clubs well, or got very lucky!

You have recently come back to your original club Kilkenny, how are you finding it?It’s challenging in a different way. UL Bohs benefits by its close links to the university. There’s a steady flow of players into the club. This year in Kilkenny we lost a number of players for various reasons and it’s difficult to replace them easily. As regards fitting into a new team, that’s been good. The girls were very welcoming and anyway, I believe, girls who are willing to tackle or take a tackle for the team are a good bunch to hang out with.

What is your favourite thing about your home town?

I love Kilkenny because it is home. My family are here and this is where I grew up. I have ties with Offaly too but Kilkenny is where I feel home.

You’re a teacher what made you take that career path?I wanted to do something with sport and originally had decided on Sports Science. My wise mother guided me towards teaching and I’m very glad she did. I had time to be able to spend training. I can coach teams in school and the holidays are ok too!!

Christmas all wrapped up

It is impossible not to feel festive now, isn’t it? I recently did a spot of late-night shopping, admired the pretty lights dotted around the city and took in the beautiful backdrop that is Kilkenny Castle.

Determined to be on top of Christmas preparations this year, I scouted around for gifts and was delighted to discover some exclusive shops for the season! Prepare to unleash the inner magpie, as it’s not just the Christmas lights that are sparkling but the High Street and side streets which are bountiful with party wear and accessories in the many shops and boutiques around.

What a wonderful incentive to treat yourself! I took a well-earned rest and pondered the purchases over a cup of coffee. Across to Patrick Street and The Parade, this is certainly a good destination for gifts and that something special.

The Kilkenny Christmas Market takes place on The Parade and is always enjoyable to wander through the stalls, abundant with toys and gifts and sweet treats. It was whilst crossing the bridge to John Street however, that I found the perfect ingredients to gather some much needed spices for mulled wine and gifts.

Not only delighted with my purchases but also, to see that craft producers of ‘MADE in Kilkenny’ have opened a Christmas pop-up shop!

Located near the Wine Centre (which also looks wonderfully festive), it was beautiful to behold hand-made, affordable gifts; colourful candles, textiles, pottery and you can also adorn yourself with hand-created jewellery, decadent hats and headpieces and much more.

A time for exchanging gifts, the season to be jolly is a great opportunity to enjoy the city’s well-established cultural and creative reputation. So, this leaves me to say, what better to embrace this sentiment than to buy locally, especially if it’s ‘MADE in Kilkenny!

What does it mean to you to be from Kilkenny?I’m very proud of my Kilkenny roots. Every time I speak in public I put up a slide of a Kilkenny flag. I have very happy memories of going to school and growing up there.

Your family owned the well known and much loved Newpark Hotel for over 40 years. What was it like growing up in that environment and what made you decide to pursue a career outside of the hotel industry?The hotel was opened by my father in 1966 and was in our family for 48 years. I worked there as a kid and then came back as chairman in 2001 until 2008 so I benefited from seeing it at the beginning of my career. It had a great effect on me as I got to understand you have to work hard to succeed at an early age.

How has being in the public eye affected both your personal and business life?

It’s nice when people you never met stop you on the street. I love talking to people so I am quite flattered. My Dragons Den profile has been very helpful to Insomnia as we get lots of publicity without spending money on it.

You are the chairman of Insomnia coffee. With the downturn in the economy has there been a drop off in coffee sales and if so how have you reacted to this?There has been no drop in the number of customers we serve but they now spend less. Our €5 or €5.75 deals represent almost half our sales so you have to have a strong value proposition to compete in today’s market place.

Ireland’s food exports have been resilient in the current climate. Do you think there is potential to capitalise on this to boost the Irish economy?There is great hope for Irish Food. We have the best land and hence

the best grass and the best cattle. Artisan food production combined with tourism represents real opportunities for Ireland.

When looking at new investments which do you think is more important, the idea or the person behind the idea?I personally put the person before the idea. If you can’t trust or work with someone it doesn’t matter how good their idea is.

You also host a radio show on Newstalk every sunday morning, ‘Down to business’. Is radio broadcasting something you’ve always had an interest in?Yes, I’ve always been a great fan of the radio. I had to work very hard to get comfortable on air but I absolutely love talking to people about business on air. If I was starting my career all over again I would probably choose radio broadcasting.

If you had one piece of advice to give somebody starting out on their own in business what would it be?It takes twice as long and costs twice as much so try to allow for that in the early days. Work in your business and stay close to where the customers are so you have a better chance of success.

Kilkenny has recently been crowned Ireland’s best city according to retail excellence Ireland. What do you think Kilkenny has above the rest?It’s clean, well maintained and they market the city very well. They are also blessed with not having too much out of town retail.

Fortunately I’m not a coeliac myself, but the hubby is; when he was diagnosed back in 1998, we had to make what we thought were major changes in his diet. It was not that hard as it turned out. Today he is healthy and well, and the coeliac condition is not as rare as we once thought. The restaurants are now ( or should be ) aware of the condition, so most dishes can be catered to the coeliac’s needs.

christmas used to be tricky, especially if you love plum puddings, cakes, mince pies, and the good old stuffing! Now there are recipes easily available and user friendly, which us important especially if you need to cater for the hoards of relations, it needs to be simple. check out these Gluten free condiments recipes; bearing in mind, to check the ingredients list, if you need to go shopping for the various ingredients to ensure everything is gluten free.

Spiced Brandy Butter

A perfect accompaniment to your gluten-free Christmas Pudding or mince pies.

Ingredients: 8 oz (227g) Unsalted Butter8 oz (227g) Caster Sugar1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon*3-4 Tablespoons Brandy* Please check the Food List for suitable gluten-free brands.

Method: 1.Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy and pale yellow.2.Add the cinnamon and brandy and blend thoroughly.3.Chill in the fridge and serve with mince pies or Christmas pudding

Gluten free gravy

Ingredients:25g/1oz butter1x15ml tbsp Mild olive oil1 small onion (finely diced)1 stick of celery (finely chopped)1 carrot (finely chopped)Turkey giblets (rinsed)4 black peppercorns

1 bayleaf50g/2oz Glutafin Select Gluten Free Multipurpose White Mix or any gluten free brand flour2x15ml tbsp redcurrant jelly

Method1. Gently sweat vegetables in the butter and oil for 5 minutes to soften without browning. Add giblets and cook for a further 5 minutes to brown meat. Pour in 1L vegetable stock or water and seasonings. Cover pan and bring to a gentle simmer for 45 minutes.2. Stir Glutafin or other brand gluten free White Mix into 3x15ml tbsp of the turkey cooking juices in a pan over a gentle heat to make a paste. Gradually stir in stock and any additional turkey cooking juices and bring to a gentle simmer. Stir in redcurrant jelly and an optional couple of table spoons of white wine just before serving.

Gluten Free Plum Pudding

Ingredients:75g / 3oz Tritamyl Gluten-free Flour 75g / 3oz Shamrock Light Brown Sugar 175g / 6oz Margarine 3 Eggs (lightly beaten) 1 teaspoon Mixed Spice (gluten-free) 500g packet Shamrock Luxury Fruit Mix 1 Apple (Grated) 100g packet Shamrock Ground Almonds 175g / 6oz Breadcrumbs (gluten-free) 150ml / 1/4 pint Whiskey 150ml / 1/4 pint fresh Orange Juice

Method:1. Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. 2.Add the lightly beaten eggs and mix well. 3.Stir in the flour and mixed spice. 4.Next add the fruit mix, grated apple and ground almonds. Mix well. Finally, add the breadcrumbs, whiskey

and orange juice. 5.Stir well, cover and leave to stand overnight. 6.Transfer to a 3 pint greased pudding bowl. Steam for 5 hours

To steam pudding in oven:Put two long strips of tin foil crosswise on work top or table. Place roasting tin on foil. Sit pudding bowl into the tin and fill with boiling water to within 1” of top of tin. Then bring tin foil around to form a parcel, which should be airtight to prevent any steam escaping. Place in preheated oven at 150°C/300°F/Gas 2 for the same length of time as above. There is no need to top up with water during cooking

1.Place all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir until well combined.

Mince PiesWho doesn’t love a mince pie? Its a real sign that christmas is around the corner. serve cold, heated with ice cream or cream.

Ingredients

350g/12oz high quality mincemeat, preferably homemade200g/7oz plain flour, sifted40g/1½oz golden caster sugar75g/2¾oz ground almonds125g/4½oz unsalted butter, diced1 large free-range egg, beatenmilk, to glaze

Preparation method

1. Lightly butter a 12-hole pie or patty tin. Tip the mincemeat into a bowl and stir so that the liquid is evenly distributed.2. Place the flour, sugar, almonds and butter in a food processor and process briefly until resembling breadcrumbs, then slowly add the egg through the feeder tube. (Or rub the butter into the dry ingredients by hand and stir in the egg.)

3. bring the mixture together with your hands, wrap in clingfilm and chill for an hour or so. Thinly roll out the pastry on a floured surface. Cut out 12 circles with a fluted pastry cutter, large enough to fill the base of the prepared tin. Press gently into each hole, then fill with the mincemeat.4. cut out another 12 slightly smaller discs and use to cover the mincemeat.

Press the edges together to seal. make a small slit in the top of each, then brush lightly with milk. chill for about 30 minutes. meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200c/400F/Gas 6.5.bake the pies for 20 minutes until golden brown. remove to a wire rack and serve warm.

Just make sure you don’t eat too much

This charming little pub in Parliament street is the perfect place to go for the drink after the hard day’s shopping. Go sit on the bench style seats at the back of the pub, with a pint of the “black stuff”, for which O’riadas is famous for. If you are on your own, the friendly bar staff are there to make you feel at home. If you catching up with a friend; you can have that overdue chat in the comfort of the pubs natural relaxing atmosphere, you will not hear the pumped music you would
