Scouts BSA Break - Out
“Recruiting in the Time of Pandemic”
Establish a routine; Retention
NEED A PROGRAM – rank advancement; Virtual MB and Camp events; Troop Meetings/COH’s; National/Council/Zone events
PLC/Adult Leaders’ meetings; Service Projects; Use ACTIVITIES…. “not just a lecture;”
Outdoors (Trail challenges such as orienteering, nature, geocaching – set up by the Older Scouts with support and checking by Adult Leaders) that can be done by a
household (instruction sheets and/or videos, chalk marks.
Retention and Recruitment: follow the regulations/protocols; ads, invites – bridging Webelos community; friends; RSVP; platform, kits to attendees? Length, video
and pictures to share, Scouts and adults involved, AOL Scoutmaster Conference, topics, separate virtual rooms/leadership and supervision. Follow up!
Troops below are a few ideas that may work for your recruiting this year ---
Virtual meeting – Overview of your troop for WEBELOS.
Highlighting your strengths.
Virtual Tour / Video of your meeting Space, Typical meeting agenda & Troop owned supplies
Virtual Meet & Greet – Get to know Scouts in your unit. Q & A open Forum
Q & A for parents in a separate zoom room.
Troop flyers with key info and dates of events etc.
Plan the Rally and Agenda – agenda and length
Who is going to be the main speaker and who is going to control the virtual meeting – have a production team for the
best results.
**Have a person who knows how the virtual meeting platform works serve as the meeting coordinator. They
should be the person who logs in as host, controls the screen sharing, and mutes all except the main
speakers
**Have other people be the main presenters. You might want to have more than one so that prospective parents can see the unit as a team of leaders
who work together – it’s not just a one-person show.
**Have a person who monitors chat questions and acts as the moderator during the Q & A session. This person can also reply back in the chat feature
during the presentation.
Items you may want to include in the rally agenda:
Introduction of Unit Leadership – who you are and why you are involved in Scouting (5 to 7 minutes)
Let the parents know that you will be taking Q & A through the chat and will be answering at the end of the presentation
What have you planned for your unit over the next few months. (15 minutes)
Virtual Meeting Times
Virtual Rank Requirements workshops (remember these parents are not in Scouting, so provide a brief explanation of the skills or activities
that the youth will be doing and what they will learn from the activity)
Virtual Campouts – council/national or just your unit
A few ideas about activities that might happen outdoors after the shelter-in-place is lifted, but social distancing is still a practice -focus on
keeping people safe and providing a fun activity.
Cost of joining and what that pays for (2 minutes)
How the person can join your unit. Decide if you will be sending out email invitations with QR codes or the URL from Invitation Manager, or through
BeAScout URL. (3 minutes)
Parents can fill out the online application using their smartphone, tablet, or PC and pay their national registration fee by credit card (if the unit
has turned on credit card setting)
If you have a unit fee you will need to determine how that will be collected and inform the parents
Q & A from Parents and wrap up (15 minutes)

Be a Blessing - a true story Minute Many of you have heard of a woman in India named Mother Teresa who has devoted her life to serving the poor. She is known around the world. She has shown that you do not have to do big things to be a blessing to others. If someone is hungry you can feed them. If they are dirty you can help clean them. If they are sick you can care for them. If they are lonely you can talk to them. If they mourn someone you can give them words of comfort. You do not have to be rich or famous or a person of great importance to do any of this. You simply have to care about others as much as you care about your own needs. Mother Teresa has cared for many who were sick, fed many who were hun-gry, and cleaned many who were dirty. She gave up all her worldly posses-sions when she started doing this many years ago. She was not always fa-mous but she always cared, helping people in the slums of Calcutta, India. Each of you can be a blessing to others as you live your lives. You can say a kind word when someone is down; you can buy a meal for someone who is hungry. When you help someone, keep it to yourself, you do not need to tell others what a good person you are. The world will notice your example by how you treat others. When the opportunities arise, always be a blessing to family, friends and strangers!
