A LetterTo All Active BMI Member Companies,BMIhadanexcellentyearinattractingnewmembersei-therasaresultofthemergerwithHBI/LBI,orthroughtheeffortsoftheBMIMembershipCommittee.Asaresult,itwasdecidedtoreissuethisinformationtomakeallnewBMIActiveMembercompaniesawareoftheSalesIndexandRatioAnalysisreports,andtoremindthebalanceoftheActiveMemberbasethattheopportunityexiststoparticipate.TheBMIsponsorstworeportsthatprovidefeedbackoninformationregardingsalesperformance(SalesIndexReport)andmanufacturingcostsasapercentageofsales(RatioAnalysisReport).Forasamplereport,con-tactDianneMorrisatdmorris@bmibook.com.TheSalesIndexReportisissuedmonthlyandcomparesthepercentageincrease/decreaseofmanufacturingsalestothepriormonthandYTDresultsforeachcom-panyreporting.TheRatioAnalysisReportispublishedonceayearandcalculatesthevariouscostelementsofabusinesstorevenuesasapercentageofsales.Actualrevenuesandcostsarenotreported.Theseratiosarethenlistedbycompanyandindustryaveragesaredeveloped.Thevaluetobothreportsisthatyouwillbeabletogetfeedbackregardingfinancialandsalesinformationfromcompaniesinthesamesectoroftheprintmarketinwhichyoucompete.AlltheinformationforbothreportsissentdirectlytoDennisRamey(BMICPA)tomaintainconfidentiality.Heassignsacodeforeachcompany,andeachcompanyistheonlyonethatknowstheircode(CompanyA,Com-pany1).TheBMIoffice,noranyBMImembershaveac-cesstothefinancialinformationprovided,northeidentityoftheparticipatingcompanies.Wedonotpublishalistofparticipatingcompanies.Therefore,youwillnotknowwhoaretheothercompaniesreporting,andtheother

Lay-flat Bindings– Industry Needs to Develop GuidelinesAttherecentBMIAnnualConference,Igaveapresen-tationthatcoveredthistopicindepth.Thesedays,itissimplyunbelievablewhatisbeingofferedasso-called“lay-flat”bindings.Bookbindingmachineryandadhesivesuppliersmisusethiswordextensivelyandourindus-tryneedstotakeactiontodeterminewhatconstitutesatruelay-flatbinding.Thistopicishardlynew.Infact,theAmericanLibraryAssociationrequestedsimilaractionalmostfiftyyearsago,in1966.Theirconcernwasprimar-ilyaroundreadabilityofbooksboundforlibraries.Atthattime,theysimplyhadtoacceptthebooksastheywereandevaluatethemwithregardtotheirdurabilityanduse.Forexample,areaderhasnocontrolofapaper’sweightorgraindirection.WhatthefolksatALAwerelookingforwerebookswitheasytoreadhands-offfeatures.They
developedausefultooltomeasurethereadabilityfeaturesofbookspurchasedforlibraries,regardlessofwhetherthebookswereneworrebound.
Yearsago,theideaoftypebeinglostinthegutterspacewasreferredtoas“thebattleofthemargins.”Bearinmindthatinthe1960s,wehadjuststartedtoadhesivebindbooks.Theterm“lay-flat”hadnotyetcomeintouse.ThemajorityofbookblockswereSmythsewnandwhenopened,werelyingflat.Readabilityandenduseperfor-mancewerealwaysonthemindofthosededicated

ThefirstworkwithPURadhesivesstartedintheearly1990s.Attheturnofthecentury,bindersstartedtousethisnowsafe,exceptionallystrongandnon-migratoryadhesive.Duringdrupa2012,IcouldhardlybelievethecommotionoverPURlay-flatbindings.Bookbindingmachinerymanufacturersfromallovertheworldproudlytoutedtheirsystems,claimingthattheintegrationofPURresultedin“lay-flat”features.Ifonlythatwerecompletelytrue.WhileitisafactthatbookblocksboundwithhotmeltaremuchstifferthanthoseboundwiththemoreflexiblePURadhesives,moststillhaveacertainclampingeffectandareanythingbutatruelay-flatbinding.ManymaynotevenbeawarethatoursupplierssellbothaflexibleandamorerigidPURadhesive.BothhaveaspecificpurposeindividualswhoestablishedtheMSST/NASTAspecifica-
tions.Thesespecsrequire,forexample,thatonadhesiveboundbooks,thepapergrainisalwaysparalleltothebindingedge.Inaddition,theyestablishedstrictspecificationsforadequatemargins.Thecommitteewantedtostrengthenthereadabilityfeaturesfortext-booksusedinschoolsandprotecttheirbindingsagainstexcessivestrain.Forcingabookblockopentoseealltheprintingwillusu-allybreakanadhesiveboundbinding.Inshort,studentstakingnotesandparticipatingindiscus-sionsarenotwellservedbybindingsthatactlikemousetraps.
AdhesiveboundschoolbookscomingapartduringthecoldwintermonthsincountrieslikeFinlandandRussiaresultedinthedevelopmentoftheOtabindbinding.In1984,GerardHexspoor,aDutchengineerandownerofabookbindery,ac-quiredtherightsforsuchtruelay-flatbindingsfromOtavaPublishinginFinland.Afterconsiderablere-engineering,Otabindlay-flatadhesivebindingsys-temsweresoldallovertheworld.Theirsecretwasatwo-shot,coldemulsionPVAbinding.Otabind’sbindingsmadetheterm“lay-flat”verypopular,asthatfeaturewasverymuchappreciatedbytheend

andtheirapplicationwilltypicallydependonthetypesofcoverorpaperusedalongwiththeweightandgraindirec-tionsofthepaper.Ofcourse,thereareexceptions.ItisclearthatPURadhesiveshavechangedthebookbindingindustryandthatwecanandshouldbeenthusiasticabouttheirsafeapplicationandsuperiorperformance.Despiteallofthat,IamstilltroubledbythemisrepresentationofPURadhesivesandbindingsas“lay-flat.”
So, what can be done about this?Ourindustryneedsguidelines.Since1923,ourtradeassociationshaveestablishedstrictmanufacturingspecificationsforlibrarybindingsandtextbooksusedinschools.Overtime,thesespecificationshavebeenreworkedandadjusted,takingintoconsiderationnewmaterialsandtechnologies.Whenwearejudgingspecificfeaturesofabookblock,suchashowwellitwillopenandlayflat,wemustalsotakeintoconsiderationthestiffnessaddedwiththecoverorback-liningmaterials.Evenwithaveryflexibleadhesive,abindinggluedontoastiffmaterialwillnolongeropenflat.Imagineacross-grain,stiffcover.ThatiswhyOtabindandRepKoverstylesofbindinguseonlyathincambriccloth

asaback-lining—toachieveultimateflexingandtoallowabookblockboundinthisfashiontoopenflat.Minimummarginspecificationsforschoolbooks,asestablishedbyMSST,enhancereadability,evenforside-sewnbooks.Mysuggestionisthedevelopmentofguidelines,whichspecifythelay-flatcharacteristicsandstandardsforreadability.Inshort,weneedtodeveloptheguidelinesandthetoolsinwhichtomeasurethemandworktopromoteusefulcri-teriatojudgetheperformanceofaparticularbindingwithregardtotheguidelines.Abookblockadhesiveboundinsuchawaythatitfeaturesa“built-inMousetrap”wouldau-tomaticallyreceivean“F”grade.Thebigquestionishow can we measure and establish such an industry criterion for true lay-flat bindings?Asmentionedearlier,ALAstartedtodiscusssuchanendeavoralmost50yearsago.Maybeitistimetotakeanotherlookattheireffortsandimproveonitforthebenefitofourindustry.
