CLUB HISTORYLike many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence.

The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Good afternoon and a welcome to today’s Division One fixture between ourselves and Eccleshill United. As ever, all at Rossington Main extend our warmest hospitality to all connected with today’s visitors and hope their supporters and officials enjoy their visit to Oxford Street.

We may not have the expensive lights and decorations - nor sadly the crowds - that are synonymous with the other Oxford Street at this time of year, but as last Saturday showed we are certainly not shy of entertainment on these terraces. Of course there is no guarantee that we will see another four goals in the final six minutes as we did against Pontefract a week ago, but at least we’re not being dragged round a department store looking at candles for Aunt Ada, something we can all be thankful for.

It was hard to know quite how to feel after last Saturday’s game. A 3-3 draw

against a side such as Pontefract is a decent result, but having led three times there is some inevitable disappointment that we could not quite hang on for the three points. However, the game did show something of a new resilience in the side to keep going for goals when perhaps in early season that first Pontefract equaliser may have opened the floodgates for the visitors.

With a crucial three games starting today against sides around us in the table such resilience could well prove an invaluable asset in the bid to stay in the NCEL

Enjoy the Game, and on behalf of all at Rossington Main have a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2013.

Up the Main!Glen Wilson

ON THIS DAYSomething I didn’t counter for when hitting on the idea for this feature was days on which the Main haven’t played a game. I’ve records going back twenty years at my disposal, but it seems that in all that time the club haven’t taken to the field on this date, so instead I’ve picked out a couple of Main games from 23rd December, as well as some other notable football occurences from 22nd December.

2006 // NCEL DIVISION ONENOSTELL MINERS WELFARE 4-1 ROSSINGTON MAIN

Not a classic footballing year for the Main 2006-07, the club would end the season rooted to the foot of NCEL Division One after a disastrous campaign. This defeat against Nostell was the thirteenth match of an eighteen game league run that brought Rossington just a solitary point. December’s four games alone would see Main ship sixteen goals.

Ben Gilbert opened the scoring in this one after twelve minutes and the home side doubled their advantage through John Coppinger eight minutes before the break. Coppinger grabbed another just after half time and Craig Stephens completed the scoring for the hosts with half-hour still to play. Ryan Shelton’s 70th minute goal of little consolation for Rossington.

NCEL DIVISION ONEYORKSHIRE AMATEUR 3-1 ROSSINGTON MAIN//2000

about a bottom place finish wasn’teased by this loss at Bracken Edge, a fourth consecutive defeat for the month. It would be the return game between the two a month later that’d bring Main their next points, by way of a 1-0 win at Oxford Street.

Another disappointing December in a disappointing campaign for the Main; the 1st team finishing second bottom of Division One at the end of 2000-01, with just Tadcaster Albion beneath them. The Brewers had beaten Main in the game prior to this and concern

.....ALSO ON THIS DAY.....ALSO ON THIS DAY.....ALSO ON THIS DAY.....1963 // Guiseppi Bergomi is born. The Italian defender spent his entire twenty year career at Internazionale, and also played in four World Cup Finals tournaments (82, 86, 90 and 98) despite never playing in a World Cup qualifying match.

1967 // Dan Petrescu is born. The full-back started his career with Steaua Bucharest before moving to Italy’s Serie A, firstly with Foggia and then Genoa. He joined Sheffield Wednesday

in 1994, and then joined Chelsea a year later. Petrescu made 95 appearances for Romania, and is currently manager of Dynamo Moscow.

TODAY’S VISITORS

There is evidence of an Eccleshill United football club in existence prior to 1910, in the form of a team who played at Eccleshill Recreation Ground. It is believed that this was a youth team with a maximum age of 20 years amongst its players.

The present Eccleshill United was also present before the Second World War, but this team had to be disbanded when most of the players and officials of the club went into the armed forces.

The club was reformed in 1948 and during the 1950s played its football in the Bradford Red Triangle League, whilst a move was made from the Recreation Ground to a new home at a pitch on Acre fields. Then, in 1963, the club purchased land at Plumpton Park, which remains its current headquarters. A great deal of work had to be done to transform what was an old quarry into two football pitches.

A WARM WELCOME TO ECCLESHILL UNITED

The club’s senior side joined the West Riding County Amateur League progressing to the Premier Division in 1972 and in 1974 a licensed clubhouse was built at the club’s ground In 1982 Eccleshill United applied to join the North East Counties League but were initially unsuccessful. New terracing was built and the dressing rooms upgraded and at the end of the 1984/85 season a successful application was made.

Since 1985 the club has operated in the Northern Counties East League with varying degrees of success. During the middle of the last decade the club fell on hard times and in 2008 the first team were relegated to the First Division, and the following season narrowly avoided finishing in the bottom two and being forced to leave the League.

CLUB FACT FILESince then a new committee has been formed under the leadership of Adrian Benson and the committee has resolved to take the club forward. Mark Ellis was appointed Director of Football and he brought Ian Banks to the club as manager, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the Football League. Eccleshill also formed a good relationship with Bradford City and the Richmond International Academic and Soccer Academy.

Mark and Ian have overseen the onfield transformation of the club whilst the committee have set about improving the stadium. The last three years have seen the Main Stand refurbished along with the floodlights, the playing surface has been levelled and the perimeter fence re-clad. New netting has also been installed between the ground and the neighbouring houses, not to mention new dugouts, goalposts and nets, plus an improved P.A System, whilst there are ongoing plans for new changing facilities at the ground.

The first team are doing reasonably well in the NCEL, though have recently seen a change of managers with Ian Banks giving way to the vastly experienced Bobby Davison who, as well as time spent playing for Leeds, Derby and others has also managed Ferencvaros. The United reserve team are playing at a very high standard in the Lancashire League and Eccleshill also run a successful U19s side.

With the dedicated people Eccleshill United now have in place it is hoped that the club will continue to develop “onwards and upwards.”

LEAGUE NEWS

Scarborough Athletic have been in mourning following the death of former club manager Brian France last Monday.

France had played a major role in building the foundations of Scarborough Athletic and led them to promotion from Division One into the Premier Division in his second season with the club. Unfortunately France had been forced to retire from football management following a brain

haemorrhage suffered in September 2010 after he was struck by a ball during a match at Liversedge.

France never fully recovered from that freak accident, and passed away late on Monday 10th December. Since his death tributes have understandably poured in from across the League for the very popular figure, and all at Rossington Main extend our condolences to Mr France’s friends and family.

CUP DRAWN - BUT MAIN STILL WAIT ON QUARTER FINAL OPPONENTS

Rob Hunter is the new man at the helm of Premier Division Glasshoughton Welfare, having been introduced to his new squad ahead of last week’s postponed fixture with Parkgate.

Hunter has previously managed Tadcaster Albion as well as Harrogate Town and Harrogate Railway Athletic, and got off to a winning start at Leeds Road with a 4-2 victory over Hall Road Rangers.

The draw has been made for the Quarter Finals of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Rosehill Press Challenge Cup, but the Main 2nd team, the only remaining Doncaster side in the competition, must wait on the outcome of one of the remaining 3rd round ties before discovering their opponents.

Rossington, who have already defeated two Sheffield County Senior League sides in the competition will travel to face a third in January asthey take on the winner of the match

between 2nd Division Jubilee Sports and 1st Division Outbridge WMC. Both sides sit towards the top of their respective divisions with Jubilee currently unbeaten so either will represent a stern test for Main.

MAIN IN ACTION

Another encouraging point on the board for Rossington Main from an entertaining and hard fought game against Pontefract Collieries at Oxford Street. Though having led twice in the final ten minutes Main can perhaps be disappointed not to have taken more from the fixture.

With Steve Lodge away, Ian Wilson was back at the helm for Main and the home side started get a foot in the game and managed to put in a testing low cross from each flank, the latter of which from the left had to be hooked over his own bar by Will Rowley.

Rossington were forced into an early change with a knock to Ben Clark bringing Richard Spears into the game and the substitute was straight into the action as neat work between Nathan Fraser and Dean Thornton on the left saw the latter square the ball across the top of the area to the unmarked Spears arriving on the right, but his first time effort flew over the bar.

The game was still evenly matched at this stage and had Pontefract’s Brenton Leister been more adept at holding the line then he would have caused Main much more problems than the two he was restricted to by the assistant referee’s flag. The first of these chances saw him fire a fierce shot from the right channel that

Liam Copley in the Main goal got a good hand on to turn over the bar. The second saw him tumble to the floor in the area as Rowley stretched to tackle. With Pontefract appealing for a penalty and the home crowd fearing the worst the referee blew, only to book the Ponte player for diving. A brave call from the official, but from my position behind the goal, the right one too.

The frustration felt by the visitors would be further exasperated just a couple of minutes later as Rossington took the lead; Doyle’s low through ball releasing Brandon Fallon and the forward calmly slotted the ball into the corner for 1-0. Soon after the goal the temperature of the game was raised as a fierce challenge from Fraser brought a rightful yellow card, not to mention more unnecessary handbags than Zsa Zsa Gabor’s wardrobe. But with the visiting forwards still failing to stay onside Main finished the half on top as a Fraser free-kick was glanced over by Rowley and then a cross from the other side had to be headed over from beneath his own bar by a Collieries defender with Fallon looming.

The visitors, looking to get back into the game, started the second half on the front foot, forcing a succession of corners, though they would be unable to capitalise on the set-pieces. At the other end Rossington continued to

MAIN ISSUE // Official Matchday Magazine of Rossington Main FC 17

MAIN IN ACTIONhave sights of goal to potentially add to their lead; Brad Billam’s low long-range effort bringing a comfortable save from the visiting ‘keeper.

Just before the hour mark though Pontefract found their equaliser, as they worked the ball back into the area from an initial blocked shot, and a low square ball across the face of goal was turned in by Leister from close range. Back level the visitors grew in confidence and the better chances of the next quarter of an hour would fall their way. Firstly a cross from the left top the near post was volleyed wide, then as Leister broke from halfway he only had Copley to beat, but the keeper stood his ground well, getting down to block at the feet of Leister. The Collieries’ captain also flashed a shot just over the bar, but having weathered that storm Rossington began to force chances of their own breaking forward.

First to threaten for Main was John Tunney as a cross from the right was cleared his way, but the midfielder’s half-volley flew over. He’d have an even greater chance minutes later as Fallon broke down the right and squared to put Tunney in on goal, but his touch was heavy and the Ponte ‘keeper was able to smother the chance. Still the opportunities kept coming for Main and a minute later Billam got into the area to flash a powerful effort across goal that cannoned back off the far-post, with Doyle striking the follow-up to loud “ooohs” from the home crowd.

Finally, with just six minutes left the pressure told as again Main worked the ball over to the left and ultimately to the feet of Spears who tucked it beyond the ‘keeper and make it 2-1 to Rossington. Sadly, that lead would last barely a minute as Collieries hit back, Leister finding enough space in the area to level the scores with five minutes left.

Undeterred by the set-back Main pushed once more and when they got their chance they took it, a deep cross from Fraser came back off the post and Fallon was on hand to control it and turn a shot goalwards that squeezed under the ‘keeper to put Main 3-2 ahead.

Incredibly there was still time for one final twist as Ponte threw men forward in the final minute and with Main failing to clear their lines a cross from the left found three Collieries players queuing up to head home with Steve Tierney taking the initiative to do so. A cruel blow for Rossington in a game they had done enough to win, but heart can be taken in the manner they fought to regain the lead twice, when perhaps earlier in the season they may have wilted.

IN RESERVE

The 2nd team continued their impressive run in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup a fortnight ago, with a second successive scalp over Sheffield County Senior League opposition.

Having defeated 1st Division Caribbean Sports in the 2nd round of

the competition Main were in for an even sterner test in this fixture as they travelled to Premier League Davy F.C However Main, despite having lost a number of players to the 1st team of late, proved resilient and defied the odds to secure a hard-fought and tense 3-2 victory and with it an unlikely place in the Quarter Finals.

SAT 15TH DECEMBER // DONCASTER & DISTRICT PREMIER LEAGUEBRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE 6-5 ROSSINGTON MAIN

After the joy of continuing their Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup run the week before the 2nd team made a disappointing, if not eventful, return to Premier League action as they fell on the wrong side of an eleven goal thriller away at leaders Bramley Sunnyside.

With a number of players who had previously been 2nd team stalwarts again on 1st team duty it was another young 2nd XI that made the trip to Rotherham’s Ruby Cook Sports Ground and one that, with Jordan Wildey injured and Dan Lodge unavailable, didn’t have a recognised goalkeeper.

That factor could go someway to explain the resulting goal-glut of a fixture that saw the home side do enough to keep Rossington at arms length throughout.

Though captain Reece Brailey led the way for Main, notching a hat-trick, the home-side always remained that one-step ahead, with Salt scoring four for Sunnyside. Marcel Chipamunga and Dave McGee would also find the net for Main, but despite taking the visitors’ tally to five, goals from Donnelly and Brunyee for Bramley ensured that it was the home side who triumphed to retain their place at the top of the table.

Rossington now have a welcome couple of weeks break over Christmas to regroup and prepare for their next fixture. Though they remain wedged in mid-table in the league, they are still chasing Cup silverware with a second round date in the Doncaster Premier Division KO Cup, not to mention a Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup quarter final awaiting them in the new year.

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE

NO. 7. NOT ENOUGH CHRISTMAS FOOTBALLAt Christmas you can be sure of many things; anti-climactic television programming, dad slipping into a brandy butter induced post-lunch coma and Premier League managers appearing on television to complain about their fixture schedule.

Advocating a winter break like those endured by football fans across most of the continent, predominantly the overseas managers, and usually Arsene Wenger like look gravely into the lens of the television cameras and intone that there is something wrong with the way fixtures are scheduled at Christmas time in the UK. And they’re right of course. There is something wrong. There just simply aren’t enough games.

Boxing Day football with the family is Christmas for me, often a greater cause of anticipation and excitement than the day itself. Because let’s face it, as we get older, the day itself holds fewer and fewer surprises, turkey again, the same family stories, will it be grey socks or black socks? Not so Boxing Day football, which tends unfathomably to bring end-to-end matches in front of larger than average crowds huddled beneath new hats and a cloud of day old alcohol. That to me is Christmas.

Boxing Day 1963, when players were you suspect as hungover and turkey laden as the folk watching them, was perhaps the best advocate for the brilliance and unpredictability of

Christmas football. On that day 66 goals tumbled in across just ten top flight games, including a 10-1 win for Fulham over Ipswich, an 8-2 away win for Blackburn at West Ham and a 4-4 draw between Tottenham and West Brom at a packed Hawthorns.

But the footballers of the past were a different breed, playing heartily not just on Boxing Day, but on Christmas Day too, back to back games on pitches thick with frost or snow. Those days are a world away now, indeed this year’s Boxing Day game between Arsenal against West Ham has already been postponed due to a strike by works on the London Underground. Because of course there is no way that supporters could get to a match between clubs just 8 and a half miles apart in a city served by one of the most expansive public transport networks in the world.

“Oh but they have families…” some will say of footballers. Aye, but they only work half days playing a game and get paid more than our yearly salaries in a week. I’m sure their families are ok, if they forego the turkey and the afternoon snooze.

So please, give us more football. Because without it all we will do at Christmas is shovel Quality Street down our throats whilst enduring the company of our respective families. And no-one wants that.

Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Please do not;- Ride bicycles in the ground- Smoke in the Main Stand or any club buildings- Stand in front of the seated areas- Allow dogs off their leads- Consume alcohol from glass containers at pitchside.- Enter the field of play before, during or after the game, other than at times necessitated for Health & Safety.
