10th Annual Rosefest Neighborhood PicnicSunday, June 24th, 2012
1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
There is something for everyone to enjoy in Roseville’s historic parks, said Jill Anfang, the city’s assistant Parks and Recreation director. From old to young, active to relaxed, people can find what suits them.
That quality is reflected in this year’s Rosefest theme: “Your Place in the Park!”
“The community enjoys various activities,” Anfang said. “It’s about find-ing something for everyone. The parks
give you an opportunity to find what you want to be involved in.”
The city’s 10-day annual summer fes-tival gives plenty of options to residents. Anfang called the line-up of events “tra-ditional” this year.
The festival begins June 23 with fam-ily running and rollerblading races in the morning and a campout at Harriet Alexander Nature Center that night.
Joan Jacobson was one the many volunteers that helped with the Run/Roll for the Roses last year.

What could be more relaxing than a great night out at Rosefest with friends and family and a massage?
That will kick off a week-long cel-ebration featuring a golf tournament, a car show, live music, and much more.
Anfang said she most looks forward to the always eagerly anticipated Rose Parade on June 25, which once again features several marching band perfor-mances.
“The Roseville parade has become well known for the quality of its march-
ing bands,” she said. “The parade is really special. It’s great to see volunteers bring their talents and efforts and share them with people on the side of the road.”
Other highlights include a “roll-in movie” at the Oval, where the city will show the popular baseball film Field of Dreams.
In keeping with tradition, the festival will conclude with a July 4 party and fireworks show in Central Park.

A heavy thunderstorm doesn’t mean an end to the fun at Rosefest’s annual Great American Backyard Campout.
It just means the s’mores will come out of the microwave.
A downpour and lighting threatened to cancel the cam-pout, which takes place at the Harriet Alexander Nature Center, in 2010. But officials decided instead to simply move the event indoors, set up tents in the base-ment and, yes, cook marshmallow campfire treats in the kitchen microwave.
“They adapted really well,” said Joni O’Connelly, who has brought her grandchildren to the event for the last four years. “They really do a marvelous job organizing it.”
The Nature Center has hosted the event for five years, and the number of families registering to participate has grown each year.
In the event’s first year, only two families participated, said Debbie Cash, the Nature Center’s naturalist.
Last year, there were 19. It will take place this year on June 23.
Cash said the event is a good way for inexperienced campers to try the activity in a controlled environment.
“It gives anyone who hasn’t camped much a safe place to try it out,” she said. “I’ve had grand-parents bring their grandchildren. There was one couple where the woman was an avid camper and the guy hadn’t done it, and they
eased their way in. They all seem to have a good time.”
O’Connelly said the campout gives her fun, quality time with her grandkids. She remembered taking a nature hike at a past campout and watching them chase after fireflies.
“It’s a wonderful time,” she said. “My grandkids love it. Every year I ask if they want to go again, and they say ‘definitely.’ It’s a time when you can really feel close to them.”
The Nature Center will host a campfire and cookout at 7 p.m. that is free and open to the pub-lic. The campout, which partici-pants have to register for, follows.
It is part of a nationwide event sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation. According to the federation’s website, the Great American Backyard Campout is a day where people across the country are encouraged to camp outside in their own yards.
Years ago, Cash heard of the NWF day, and thought it would make for a good Rosefest event.
It’s growing popularity suggests she was right. Early on, only two families had registered this year, but Cash said she suspected many families “want to wait and see what the weather will be like that day.”
But as long as community members are okay with micro-waved marshmallows, they don’t need to wait.
The annual campout event at the Harriet Alexander Nature Center has grown in popularity.
One way or another, there will be s’mores!

Honest-1 Auto Care truly is different. I have had my cars serviced at many different dealers and other shops looking for someone I could trust. I am so happy I found Honest-1. They live up to their name! When I bring my car to them I know I am not going to be sold anything I do not need and the probelm is going to be fi xed correctly the fi rst time I bring it to them. When the subject of auto repair comes up I tell everyone to take their car to Honest-1!
Carmenza Preus–Social Worker, St. Paul
Service is bet-ter than ever at Honest-1 Auto
Care since it opened on Lexington Avenue North in Roseville.
“Everything we do, the quality of service we offer, the warranty we offer, the eco-friendly aspect of the business sets us apart in the foreign and domestic automobile repair industry,” says owner Jim Henkel.
Henkel is joined by owner Pat Kelly, with whom he start-ed the business.
The “better than ever‚“ philosophy reflects Henkel’s and Kelly’s priority for cus-tomers who come in the door for full-service auto repair.
“We can take care of all of a customer’s automotive needs,” Kelly says.
Customer care starts with the expertise of Honest-1’s seven Automotive Service Excellence certified techni-cians. Each year the techni-cians renew their certification and continue their education with ASE classes and seminars detailing the latest technology and automobile service trends, Kelly says.
The technicians also take courses online each month.
Once a customer drives away from Honest-1 with a completed service, from align-ment to engine maintenance, they are guaranteed a three-year, 36,000-mile warranty, Henkel says, adding that the warranty promise is about triple the industry standard.
Eco-friendly products at no extra charge Honest-1’s services also
exceed the industry standards, with a full offering of eco-friendly products used during vehicle service and repairs, at
no extra cost to customers.New in the company’s eco-
friendly line is a refined oil that is 100 percent recycled and a biodegradable oil made from animal fat, Henkel says. The biodegradable line has no petroleum base, which makes it 100 percent eco-friendly, Henkel adds.
“Both of those products meet all of the federal safety and vehicle manufacturer standards. Those are two options to help reduce the amount of pollutants put into the environment when prod-ucts are disposed of,” Henkel adds.
Eco-friendly products can be used in automobile services from fuel treatments to trans-mission care, at no extra cost to customers.
In addition to the new line of eco-friendly oil products, Honest-1 also offers a full array of water-based cleansers for parts, biodegradable soap and other recycled products. The certified technicians practice oil-water separation maintenance on customers’ vehicles.
“We offer that additional
benefit to our service, and customers can choose to help the environment, again at no extra cost, when they bring their car to Honest-1 Auto Care,” Henkel says. “It’s part of our regular, everyday offer-ing, and it benefits both the customer and the environ-ment.”
Auto care treatments creat-ed to reduce emissions are also available at Honest-1, such as a fuel-maintenance process to remove deposits.
That attention to detail and commitment to overall care leads clients to rank Honest-1 among the top pro-viders of full-service automo-bile repair.
Growing in the community
The staff at Honest-1 also gives back by being active in the Roseville community and local school districts.
“That’s a big deal to us. We do a variety of fundraising programs, and we’re involved in the schools,” Henkel says. “We are really big believ-ers that we wouldn’t be here
without the support of the people that live in our com-munity and we feel a respon-
sibility to support that com-munity.”
In addition to Roseville, Honest-1 has locations in Anoka, Burnsville, Blaine Cottage Grove, Eagan, and the Uptown neighborhood in Minneapolis.
In the coming months, locations will open in New Hope and Edina, as the com-pany continues to expand its excellent auto service into other communities.
Whether they bring vehi-cles in for a basic oil change, scheduled tune-up or engine repair, customers will leave Honest-1 Auto Care knowing they’ve gotten superb service from certified technicians - with the added confidence ensured by an outstanding warranty.
“The quality of service we offer sets Honest-1 Auto Care above the rest,” Kelly says.

dition,” Parks and Recreation Director Lonnie Brokke said. “People come back to the city just to see it.”
This year’s Rosefest is a celebration of Roseville’s award-winning parks sys-tem. The city recently won a National Recreation and Park Association gold medal.
Leslie Berry, chair of the Volunteer Committee that selects the festival’s theme each year, said the Parks and Recreation Department suggested the theme. It was approved in a unanimous vote.
“We wanted to celebrate the parks,” Berry said. “One of the most attractive things about Roseville is its beautiful parks.”
Anfang said the 30 parks and 679 acres of parkland are the “heart of the city.”
“In Roseville, the community devel-oped around the parks,” she said. “People have huge pride in their parks. People have a real connection to them.”

There is more than a good grade on the line in Margaret Finnegan’s Roseville Area High School graphic design course.
The final project for the course is to design a button. And an excep-tional design doesn’t just ensure an ‘A’ on a student’s report card. It could mean that their work will be dis-played all over town for 10 summer days as the official Rosefest button design.
This year’s winner was Delanie Moen. Moen’s design is simple, with colorful fireworks highlighting a black background. It was one of 24 designs Finnegan’s class submit-ted to the Rose Parade Volunteer Committee. Finnegan said Moen was “just so excited” when told her design had won.
“It was a very simple design that showed the concept and theme of Rosefest in an elegant way,” Finnegan said of Moen’s winning button.
Leslie Berry, the Chair of the Volunteer Committee, said Moen’s design “stood out, and made a nice statement.”
Finnegan said the competition helps her as a teacher. It provides a real-world application and motiva-tion to what students learn in her class. And she said it’s produced some fantastic work.
“It’s amazing. Every class I’m amazed at the variety of designs the students come up with. They’re all very creative individuals.”
The in-class competition also ben-efits Rosefest, Berry said.
Adults plan much of the event, and lots of young children participate in the parade. The button design contest gives high school-aged com-munity members a chance to get involved with the festival.
“It’s fun to have that multi-genera-tional involvement,” Berry said.

Most people sit back, relax and simply enjoy the lights and sounds of a July 4 fireworks display.
Roseville Parks and Recreation Director Lonnie Brokke doesn’t always have that luxury. As the person in charge of selecting and coordinating the city’s annual fireworks show, Brokke pays close attention to several components of the show.
“It takes a lot of analysis,” Brokke said. “It’s a specialty. You’re looking at the timing of the show, how the colors work together, and how it’s organized.”
Brokke said a good fireworks show should have an “introduction, a body, and a conclusion.”
For the last several years, the city has selected Americana Fireworks Display Company to put on the show. Brokke said Americana has consistently put on a “spectacular and safe” show.
Americana is a Minneapolis-based fire-works display company. Patrick Bonander is a field director for the company. His father started it years ago when, according to Patrick, “he thought he could do it bet-ter than people were doing it.”
The result is a long-standing family company that has had some contin-ued customers for more than 30 years. Roseville, Bonander said, has been a cus-tomer for about 15 years.
Brokke said the city takes proposals from different firework display companies each year. The proposals outline what the show would look like and how it would incorporate different aspects of lighting and color. But for many years, Brokke said, Americana has simply had the best proposal.
Bonander echoed Brokke’s comments on the extensive thought process that goes into putting together a firework show.
“Each show is different,” he said. “You’re thinking about where the specta-tors are sitting, and how to present it to them. And we choreograph the show to music.”
The result of all that planning and scheming is a show for everyone to enjoy, and a proud moment for Bonander.
“I love the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’,” he said. “We’re a performance group, like any other performers. We love the crowd.”

What is geocaching? Ask that question to people who know about the game, and you’ll notice a com-mon response.
“It’s sort of like a treasure hunt,” said Rick Schultz, recreation pro-gram supervisor for the city of Roseville.
“Geocaching is a real-life trea-sure hunt,” said Mikaela Kramer, Outreach Specialist for REI.
“It gives you the thrill of hunting for treasure,” said Jesse Inzquierdo, REI’s senior outdoor instructor.
Geocaching is a game in which participants use GPS devices to locate containers placed anywhere in the world. The containers, called “caches,” contain a logbook — so players can write their name and when they found the item — and some small prizes.
Players can find the coordinates and locations of caches on the game’s official website, geocaching.com. According to the site, there
were 1.75 million active caches around the world at the beginning of the month.
And for the fourth straight year, Roseville residents can introduce themselves to the hobby this sum-mer at Rosefest. On Wednesday, June 27 in Central Park, REI and the city will hold a geocaching class.
Inzquierdo has taught the game for the last three years, and will lead the class. As an avid outdoorsman, he has extensive experience using GPS tracking devices. That led him geocaching, and he said that he goes on a cache hunt about once a month.
“It’s a great way to get in the outdoors and engage with people,” he said. “It can turn something like a simple day hike into an exciting adventure.”
The game seems to be growing in popularity. Inzquierdo said that he has noticed an increase in the size of classes he teaches. And according
to the game’s official blog, Latitude 47 (www.blog.geocaching.com), it’s being used academically as well. High schools in Illinois teach sci-ence students to geocache, and there is a student state competition there.
Kramer said the game provides a chance for electronics-focused kids to get outside and be active.
“It’s great for youth because it kind of bridges the gap between technology and the outdoors,” she said. “It’s a way to get kids outside. And for parents, it sort of brings back childhood memories.”
Schultz was introduced to geo-caching by a few friends. He thought it was an event that Roseville resi-dents should learn more about, so he brought it to Rosefest. And he said he’s seen more people show up to the classes over the last few sum-mers.
“It is growing, it’s getting more popular,” he said. “Because it’s just a fun thing to do.”

Sometimes, customers come to The Truman Company to find out the value of a coin or a coin collection so they can sell it. Others want an appraisal so they know a little more about their possessions, says Westerling, owner of The Truman Company in Roseville.
And, in a scene that echoes Westerling’s own past, sometimes a neophyte walks in with a coin and a certain gleam in the eye – and leaves with a wealth of knowledge and a newly-minted passion for coins.
After 36 years in business, there are plenty of repeat customers at The Truman Company. Westerling’s recipe for continued success is simple: unmatched knowledge of his field and a commitment to building and keeping trust. “We focus on good service and honesty.”
Westerling is a life member of the American Numismatic Association with an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. He’s been trusted with collections that are too big for their owners to bring into the office. This is where his sterling customer service really shines.
“I’m more than happy to come out to their home or bank,” he says. Either in-store or off-site, he spends whatever time it takes to make sure he’s provided a meticu-lous appraisal.
And if someone is interested in selling a collection, they can be assured Westerling won’t “cherry-pick” a few valuable coins and leave them with the rest. He says it’s only fair to do business on their terms, and with his experience and contacts, he can handle a wide range of inventory. “There’s a market for everything,” he says.
For one thing, the business Westerling began as a storefront for local customers now counsels people from thousands of miles away. Thanks to the digital age, The Truman Company now counts an estimated 2,500 active clients around the country.
Westerling learned the trade from his uncle Truman, a California coin dealer who crisscrossed the country in a quest to find the most coveted coins.
“Every time he visited my family, he gave me a coin that had an interesting history. His hope was that I would foster a real interest in rare and unusual coins,” Westerling says. And it worked!
While old coins appreciate gradually,
precious metals have seen a dramatic spikes in value. From 2002 to 2012, the value of silver went up 456 percent and gold 478 percent.
“I honestly think the prices for gold and silver will continue to rise during our life-time,” Westerling says.
The Truman Company has also under-gone some major changes in the past year – moving to a new suite that doubled the space to accommodate additional staff and an increased client base. But the business is still easy to find, at the same office building.
Another addition to the suite: space for a dog bed and water bowl for “Sonny,” a Lab-retriever mix – golden retriever, of course.
As with so many of Westerling’s deci-sions, Sonny was a sound investment. “He’s great with customers and adds a special welcome to the place.”
Curious about a collection? Concerned about a pending purchase? There’s help right around the corner. “My staff and I are dedicated to helping peo-
ple preserve and grow their wealth, just like my Uncle Truman did,” Westerling says. “That is why I started The Truman Company.”
You can hear the Truman Company and Roger Westerling featured in the
Brett Winterble Show, Monday through Friday from 9-10pm Eastern on XM Talk 168. In addition Roger joins Brett twice a month to break down the latest in the global precious metals and numismatics markets!

The Truman Company: a trusted name in coins
When it comes to navi-gating the world of rare coins and pre-
cious metals, people have found a trusted guide in Roger Westerling for well over three decades.
Owner Roger Westerling and mascot “Sonny” welcome coin enthusiasts to The Truman Company. Right, Westerling has offered trustworthy appraisals of coins for 36 years.
Think the coin business is chancy, confusing and, well, rigged against you? These clients of The Truman Company found that with the right advisor, it isn’t.
“Once my wife and I determined that we wanted to have precious metals in our portfolio, we contacted one of the highly advertised national providers of these products. The discussion was clear, but the process felt cumbersome. . . Just prior to making the phone call to finalize the purchase, we contacted The Truman Company for a second opinion. We were very glad we did. Roger made sure we under-stood the entire buy-sell process, all the fees involved and what to
expect after the sale. We made the purchase through Truman and the products were delivered directly to our front door within days.
We felt that we were important to them and that they would take care of any issues that might arise. We will definitely use them in the future and truly recommend them to anyone.” – K. B., Michigan
“I had many negative experiences in the coin industry. The Truman Company is the first and only coin dealer I have ever dealt with that has been forthright and honest. And I hasten to say the only coin dealer from whom I have had a profit. . . If you had an honest dealer as I believe The Truman Company to be, stay with them just as you would keep an honest and capable mechanic.” – C.A., Virginia

In between sampling pizza, ham, beef chunks, barbecue ribs, salads, fresh fruit, cookies, cucumber soup, imported cheeses, chocolate, scones, carrot cake, smoothies, wine, beer and lots more, Roseville residents sat at umbrella tables or meandered around Central Park’s Muriel Sah-lin Arboretum enjoying the gardens, listening to live music and chatting with their friends at last year’s Taste of Rosefest, which over 650 people attended.
This year, the Rotary Club-spon-sored Taste of Rosefest wil l be held on June 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Central Park Arboretum and Rotary Woods at the Dale Street park entrance between County Roads C and B2.

“People are excited for Summer, and we have lots of Summer things in – new paints, tools, lawn mowers, trimmers, sprinkler, hoses and other lawn-care prod-ucts,” says store owner Mike Johnson. “This year we have hanging baskets and pots of colorful, assorted flowers as well.”
Roseville Suburban Ace, a popular local hardware store on the corner of Lexington and Roselawn avenues, is known for its helpful, friendly service.
The store is also widely-known for car-rying top-name brands, and has recently added to that lineup with Craftsman tools, Clark and Kensington paints and Scotts’ new “Snap” lawn care system.
Ace’s affiliation with Craftsman means customers can find a full line of Craftsman wrenches, hand tools, air tools, shop vacs and other power equipment, with more available by special order, says assistant manager Dave Floberg.
The new Clark and Kensington paint is “darn good stuff,” adds Floberg, who explains all the paints in the store are made by Ace and score well in Consumer Reports. With the primer in the paint, Clark and Kensington can save customers elbow grease and time.
Scotts’ new Snap system promises the greatest change for homeowners, tak-ing the guesswork out of lawn care and the mess off their hands. With the Snap system, lawn care products like fertilizer, weed killer or crabgrass preventer are packaged so they just clip into the Snap lawn spreader. There’s no measuring, pouring or handling chemicals.
With cutting-edge products and years of expertise on staff, the Suburban Ace crew sees customers coming in from all over the area, Floberg says. Employee Troy Williams adds, “People would rather come here than the big-box stores because we know what we’re talking about, we’ve got what you need and we
greet you the minute you walk in the door.”
“It’s easier to go to Ace than any place else, and I like their courteous ser-vice,” he says.
Women are a growing part of the store’s customer base, as they gain con-fidence in their do-it-yourself abilities. Williams says plumbing seems to be a project more women are willing to tackle, noting a widow who decided she could complete a repair herself after store staff
showed her what she needed and walked her through the process.
“She was happy to get the job done herself,” Williams recalls. “We can often help people fix something on their own. They’re saving money and adding skills.”
Those turning more of their thoughts to taking care of outdoor lawns, planting flowers or maybe adding to their outdoor decor always find a helping hand at Ace.
“With the hazy lazy days of summer almost upon us, we’re well stocked with
grills, lawnmowers and garden supplies,” Floberg says.
Outdoor living furniture can now be ordered from the Ace warehouse through the store’s colorful catalog, and benches for the yard are in the store. The new Toro and Craftsman lawnmowers are in so come by and check them out.
Johnson suggests that people who need lawnmowers repaired should bring them in now, before the summer rush starts.
He adds that once new folks stop in, they usually become regulars.
“We appreciate our customers and strive to provide superior customer ser-vice,” Johnson adds. “We pride ourselves on answering their questions and helping them get going on their projects. And we want this to be a fun and friendly place to shop as well.”

Roseville Suburban Ace gears up for Summer
If you’re tired of the prime-paint-paint process, Troy Williams suggests the new line of Clark and Kensington paints, which offer paint and primer all-in-one.
Roseville Suburban Ace owner Mike Johnson and staffers Luis Saybe and Dave Floberg say the new Scotts Snap system, a lawn-product line with no-mess/no guess measurements, will make lawn care a snap.
