The Journey Continues…

I’ve learned to view life as a journey and a series of adventures.

Now that I’m reaching the end of my adventures as the Rock

County 4-H Youth Development Agent, I can say…Wow!

What a journey!

When I began my career with UW Extension as the Crawford

County 4-H Youth Development Agent in 1989, I had no idea

what adventures awaited me. Moving to Rock County in 1990

to work with talented staff and scores of dedicated volunteers

on the largest 4-H club program in the state…well, that was

just the beginning!

The journey on which I embarked that September day in 1990

lasted almost 27 years. In that time, I have had the opportunity

to be involved in SO many incredible adventures with Rock

County 4-H youth and adults. I started a list of specific

endeavors to highlight, but there are just too many of them!

The most significant of all those adventures, however, is not

difficult to identify. It has to be meeting, getting to know,

and working closely with so many exceptional youth and adult

volunteers to provide programs that have had positive impacts

on hundreds of youth.

My adventures with Rock County 4-H and UW-Extension may

be drawing to a close, but my journey continues. What will

I do when I retire? Well, one of the reasons I’m retiring is

to figure that out! I just hope I have time to start on that

“When I Retire” list at home!

It’s been a privilege to have been your 4-H Youth Development

Agent for almost 27 years. I know the program will continue to

be strong for many, many years to come, and I wish ALL of you

all the best of life’s journeys.

Thank you,

Donna Duerst

Did You Know?

River Valley 4-H News In our May River Valley 4-H meeting, we had Cloverbud appreciation month so the Cloverbuds sat up with the officers and helped them with their jobs. The Cloverbuds also helped with the cake walk. Every Cloverbud had a different job, ranging from the master DJ to the worm handlers. All of the Cloverbuds had a great time helping the officers and making desserts.

Aiden Brink, River Valley 4-H Reporter

Newark Beloit 4-H News At our last meeting we announced our club 4-H prince and princess. Congratulations to Soren Beck and Theresa Najdowski. They will be representing the club.

After the meeting, we decorated wooden cows for Rock County Dairy promotion and display at the dairy breakfast. 4-H members got to be creative using paint and glitter.

On May 13th the club gathered and did highway cleanup. We collected trash and recyclables. This was a great way to help our community.

Jenna Mosley, Newark Beloit 4-H Reporter

Plymouth 4-H News The Plymouth 4-H is pleased to announce that it has selected its 2017 Dairy Court. The club will promote dairy and 4-H at several events throughout the month of June to celebrate June Dairy Month. On June 3 the princesses and prince along with other Plymouth 4-H members will hand out samples of cheese at the Farmers & Merchants Bank in Orfordville. On June 10 members of the Dairy Court and the 4-H club will assist at the Rock County Dairy Breakfast being held at Brandl Farms in Clinton. On June 17 they will be at the Orfordville Public Library Pancake Breakfast at Purdy Park, again promoting dairy by giving out cheese samples. Plymouth 4-H Cloverbud Princess is Jemma Wilke, Cloverbud Price is Kase Hazeltine, and Dairy Princesses are Keegan Steinke, Katie Klassy, and Grace Krajeck. June is Dairy Month!

Plan to Help at This Year’s Fair! There are a lot of changes to the judging schedule of the non-animal departments for this year’s Rock County 4-H Fair. BE SURE to check your Fair Premium Book for the entry and judging times for those departments because they may be different than in previous years!

In addition, the fair volunteers are going to need a LOT of help to make everything run smoothly. PLEASE consider helping out in ANY non-animal department this year! You can help with judging, assist in arranging exhibits, help with paperwork, move tables and chairs, and so on. Even a couple of hours would be greatly appreciated!

Please contact the superintendent of the department(s) in which you’d like to help and let them know when you’re available OR be ready to say “YES!!!” when they request your help! The contact information for each superintendent can be found at the beginning of the department in the Fair Premium Book.

Let’s ALL work together to make this year’s fair judging experience a positive one for our youth! Ah...Summertime!

Livestock Premise ID

WHAT IS IT? The Livestock Premise Registration Program is intended to protect animal health, as well as the security of the food chain. Premises registration will facilitate a rapid response to animal disease emergencies.

WHO NEEDS TO REGISTER? Any person who keeps one or more livestock animals at a location in Wisconsin is required to register that location. However, if two or more persons have a role in keeping livestock at the same location, then any one of those persons may register that location; one registration will suffice for all. Even if it’s only one horse or chicken, 4-H members who raise and show livestock are subject to the rules about premise registration. This number needs to be updated every three years.

WHAT ANIMALS ARE CONSIDERED LIVESTOCK? Bovine, equine, goats, sheep, swine, poultry, captive game birds, farm-raised deer, camelids, ratites, and fish. Animals not included are rabbits, mink, dogs, and cats.

WHERE TO REGISTER? http://www.wiid.org/livestock-premises-registration or call toll free at 888-808-1910.

DESCRIPTION OF JUDGING METHODS Check the 2017 Rock County 4-H Fair Premium Book to see

which judging method will be used for each of your projects. The Fair Premium Book is also online at www.rockcounty4hfair.com.

Danish Judging Method

This judging method is the traditional system whereby all exhibits of the same lot number are presented simultaneously to the judge. The judge evaluates each exhibit but is permitted to give a maximum 25% ribbons within each group (blue, red, white, and pink). Exhibitors do not need to be present for this type of judging.

Face-to-Face Judging Method

Conference Judging Method

All exhibits within a lot number are presented simultaneously, evaluated, and awarded ribbons as in Danish judging, but the exhibitor or their representative must be available to present the exhibit. The judge asks questions pertaining to the exhibit and awards ribbons accordingly, without regard to Danish system percentages.

This type of judging allows for more flexibility on the part of the judge and the exhibitor. Exhibitors bring all of their exhibits in that department to be judged at one time and talks to the judge about the exhibits. Exhibits are not compared with other exhibits in the same lot number but are judged on their own merit. The judge may award the ribbon and premium which he/she believes is appropriate without regard to Danish system percentages.

What do you like most about this project? What do you like least about this project? What have you learned in this project? What would you like to learn more about

in this project? Where did you get the idea for this exhibit?

Where/how did you learn to make this exhibit? Who helped you? What was the easiest part of making this exhibit? What was the most difficult or challenging part of making this

exhibit? What would you do differently if you were to make a similar

exhibit again?

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON FACE-TO-FACE/CONFERENCE JUDGING What if an exhibitor can't be present at their face-to-face or conference judging? Exhibitors who cannot be present for their judging must contact the department superintendent prior to judging.

It is preferred that another exhibitor sit in for the discussion with the judge. Parents and leaders are NOT allowed to sit-in. There is no automatic penalty for exhibitors who are not present for their judging. It is up to each judge to determine how the exhibitor's absence will affect the placing awarded.

What happens to the exhibits after they are judged? All exhibits remain at the fair until the scheduled pick-up time on Sunday.

When are State Fair and Merit Award selections made? During pre-fair judging, judges will set aside some of the blue ribbon exhibits for further consideration. After all

exhibits have been judged, the judges will select the State Fair and Merit Awards from those exhibits that have been set aside.

GENERAL QUESTIONS YOU MAY BE ASKED DURING FACE-TO-FACE JUDGING

The Child Development Department lists specific information the exhibitor will need to know about his/her exhibit. If you are exhibiting in this department, check page 69 of the Fair Premium Book for this information.

OTHER FACE-TO-FACE JUDGING TIPS FOR EXHIBITORS When talking with the judge, sit up straight and speak with confidence. You are talking about yourself and your

exhibit, so you should know your stuff! Look the judge in the eye when talking with him/her. Eye contact is a very important part of effective communication.

If you don't know the answer to a judge's question, it's better to admit it than to make up an answer. Face-to-face judging is meant to be an educational experience, so don't be afraid to ask the judge some questions

about the exhibit or project . Be courteous and polite at all times. At the end of your discussion with the judge, be sure to thank him/her for

his/her comments.
