· ..... continued from page J SALTFORD SINGERS Our AGM on the 18th July was extremely well attended and produced some intriguing suggestions for our future direction. These will be discussed further at our next Committee Meeting. You will recall that Gloria Brock, our previous Conductor, had reluctantly to stand down due to health reasons . You will be pleased to know that she is flourishing in her return to the alto line, undcr Ros Hodson who has replaced her as conductor. What a time we are having as Ros tries to assess just what we arc capable of. So far we have cover<..'d 18 items ranging from the "Tick Tock Song" by Sanson, to Bach's Christmas Oratorio. All this in 6 rehearsals! Not that t.hese will necessarily form part of the programme for our next concert on the 8th and 9th December but book the dates in your diary and expect more details in future i~~ues of the SCAN. We now have our Summer break until 5th September when we shall be pleased to welcome any new recruits . Come on you men, our choir needs you! In the meantime we shall all he enjoying a trip to Penhow Castle, in Wales, on 15th August. If you would like more information about the Choir do 'phone 01225400951 or 01225 872176. SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clerk Mrs M L M Sobey, 489, Bath Road. Saltford, Brislol BSJI JBA A4 BATH ROAD - DE-TRUNKING

Tel: 4(}()()58

Many residents will remember a public meeting which was held last October at Saltford Hall to discuss the problems of local access and safety on the Bath Road. AI thaI time, it was expected that B&NES Council would be taking over responsibility for the road from the Highways Agency in April 2000. However, it has been confirmed to the Parish Council that this transfer of responsibility has been delayed and it is now possible that the A4 may remain a trunk road under the Highways Agency's control until 2003, although all efforts will be made for an earlier date. In the meantime, it means that the Parish Council and B&NES Council can only continue to recommend and press for improvements, but it is up to Highways Agency as to whether they are willing to provide them. In the past, there has been a reluctance on their part to introduce further measures which would restrict the through 110w of traffic on this road. However, sometimes ou! of Ihe blue, progress is made! Several years after it was first discussed, the pedestrian traffic lights outside the Library have been linked so that any of the bullons near this Beech Road! Manor Road junction can be pressed 10 SlOp both sets of traffic The Parish Council has recommended thaI be pUI up 10 warn drivers of this. but care must be taken to make sure all the traffic has stopped he fore

particularly as the audible "bleeping" from one may be heard marginally before the other. BUS FARES After pressure from the Parish Council. First has 10 extend ils Greater Bristol Rovercard to include journeys made from Sail ford, from 61h A weekly ticket allows unlimited travel (including hours) within the scope of its area and can be bought from the driver or Saltford Post Office. The weekly licket of £17.30 is a of £7.20 on travel if used 5 days a week for commuting 10 Bristol. Ticket~ for longer periods for bigger savings and the \0 journey card at £\5.60 (which has now been extended 10 Saltford), can also be bought al Salt ford Post Office. An alternative bus service from Keynsham to Bath via Salt ford has been started Faresaver which appears to offer a competitive to Bath timetable not yet available. F ACIUTIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE The Parish Council has agreed to continue funding the hall hire for the Sallford Young People's Club at Sail ford Hall up to July 200 I in support of Ihe work carried oul by volUnleers running the Club. The Council will also be looking at a possible scheme for providing informal facilities for teenagers PC Ian Harris will be speaking on Ihis at the Council on 5th September which could reduce the problem of disruption around Saltford Hall. GROUNDPERSON - The Parish Council is looking to appoinl a pari-time Groundperson, following the of the existing postholder. This is for an average of 5 hours per week (probably up to 10 in spring/summer much less in winter). with l1exibility as to when the work can be carried oul. The job involves grass cutting and grounds maintenance of St Mary's Memorial Gardens, footpaths (vegetation

and other small areas. All equipment and protective clothing is provided. but own transport for the mower and brushcutter is preferable. More details on the Parish Council noticeboard outside the Post Office. Madeline Sobey - Clerk

The Millennium

What will the Millennium mean to you? It could depenJ on just how old you are, The young may wonder what it's ali ahout, Youth , on the other hand, could travel far .

For many it will be a new beginning, New job, or maybe, just a change of scene . Or, even wedding bells for some of you, And yet for others, just a chance to dream .

E.Mail, computer, and the Internet, Could influence our lives for evennore. And Future even bring more changes. Whilst we can only wonder what 's in store.
