It was awesome to see so many of you at our Personal Learning Plan evening we held on Tuesday evening. It is important that we set

learning targets straight away so we can work on making awesome progress with all of our students while keeping you well informed of

the areas of development your child/ren need to focus on.

We will have another Personal Learning Plan mid-way through the year to evaluate progress that has been made and to re-set our goals

for the rest of the year.

We will be starting our Breakfast club again next week which will run out of our cooking room Monday to Friday 7.50am to 8.30am. We

have some parent helpers that have volunteered to help run our breakfast club but would really appreciate more support. If you have

some time in the morning, and would like to volunteer to help us ensure every student in our school has the opportunity to have a good

breakfast to start to the day, then leave your name with Ms Keenan in our front office and we will be in touch.

Our TOPs programme begins this Thursday and you should have seen the various TOPs options available for your child to select as

sent home last Friday. This is a real opportunity for your child/ren to be involved in a programme that really engages them in an area

they have a talent or gift to develop. It would be good to have a chat with your child/ren about this programme and what it is they are

doing that challenges them.

We have so many things happening in our school on a regular basis, at the moment we have swimming lessons going on, Team trips

this Friday, rugby 7’s teams trialing and training, school wide achievement data being analysed, TOPs and our breakfast club up and

running again. This newsletter is an important way of communicating with you and keeping you informed of what’s happening at Kelston

Intermediate so please take the time to flick through it every week and to ask your child for every Thursday afternoon (Or check it out on

our Website!)

We have now changed the classroom numbers to names

and they are as follows…..

Room 1 – Samoan Bilingual Class name is ULIMASAO. ULIMASAO means 'Steer and proceed our

boat cautiously and safely on our journey'. 'Ia alu ia le Malaga ia ULIMASAO'.

Room 2 - Kia ora whanau! We are so excited to have our own name in the new Maori Bilingual class in

2016. Our class ingoa is Nga Kakano Ka Puawai I Te Reo meaning; Nga kakano-The Seeds, Ka

puawai-Meaning to flourish, I Te Reo-using Te Reo Maori language and its culture.

So our class is about nurturing our kids with knowledge of Te Ao Maori, Tikanga Maori and our

Kelston Values and how our students will grow and flourish with pride.

Room 3 - Te Pou Herenga waka represents the pillar that ties together all the waka/vaka of our

ancestors. The meaning behind this name comes from the various ethnic backgrounds in our class and

the different walks of life that each students in our class has come from, this includes their whanau,

hapu and iwi!

Room 4 - Ngaa Kahurangi – Which means, the treasures and blue. This name relates to the highest

colour of our Taumata, which is blue and when you look up you see blue and the clouds are we dwell.

Room 5 - Nga Hau e Wha - Means the four winds. Knowledge, culture and language coming from the

four directions.

Room 6 OK – the heart of our new class name is in essence "Never give up" – Young strong confident

men in the making! TAMA TOA! Meaning warrior.

Room 7 - Lumana'i Manuia. In Samoan, it means lifelong learners working towards a successful

future.

Room 8 - "Mauria Te Pono" This means believe in yourself. We have chosen this name because many

people may believe in us but, if we don’t believe in own abilities then we cannot reach our potential.

So for us to take it to the limit we must believe in ourselves so we can reach our dreams.

Room 9 - Te Urunga. The entrance or entry point to teenage, college, adulthood.

Inclusiveness - no matter what ethnic group or community one belongs to

Working as a collective - Me Uru Kahikatea - the root system of Kahikatea tree is intertwined to

ensure stability.

Room 10 - Te kei o te waka is the prow of the waka or a yacht. A prow is the steering end of a

waka (yacht) and as we are the end of all classrooms we are the end that helps steer the rest of the

school.

Room 11 - Kainga Maturi - Dwelling place of the Deaf- comes from a legend.

Last week the item collectors were astounded and impressed by the amount of donations

everyone has gathered. Those people are coming back again to gather the last bit of

donations, so remember if you have any more spare items please drop them off at the

office. The collectors have offered some Unitec usb’s and we are planning to award these to the people that brought the most items. Thank you again to those who have donated. Aulky Wang

Nau mai, haere mai - Welcome to our first newsletter of the year. A brief insight into our ATAAHUA (beautiful) new

Māori Bilingual Classroom 2016

Ngā Kākano ka Puawai I Te Reo Translation: Our students are the seeds and we (the teachers/whanau at Kelston Intermediate) are the water/sun/nutrients- who will flourish and grow your child with the knowledge of Tikanga and Te Reo Māori. We have had such an amazing start to the year with each tamaiti learning the kura and their own pepeha, karakia, whakatauki, powhiri, kupu hou and many more concepts of Tikanga Māori. We have a very diverse range of students who all bring in their own culture, identity and ‘flavour’, which we as their kaiako value very much. A BIG thank you/mihi to all those parents/whanau who had a hui with myself at our AMAZING and thorough P.L.P night where we set great academic, social and cultural goals for every student to strive for and complete by the end of Term 1. Ngā mihi to all whanau who attended. As a whānau we discussed what could enhance our kids to learn more about Te Ao Māori(Our Māori World) , the feedback we got was MORE ‘Homework’ based around the enrichment of our culture so Kā pai whānau, please sign and make your tamariki accountable for their homework DAILY koa

Ngā mihi mahana, Matua Tyler, Whaea Terina & Whaea Lopasi

Talofa, Talofa lava, First of all, a huge fa’afetai lava to all the parents and students who came to the student’s Personal Learning Plan evening. It was very encouraging to discuss and plan your child’s learning goals for this term. Make sure to revisit your child’s goals each week, set a new goal once they have achieved them, as we need to challenge our fanau to their full potential. ULIMASAO is now our class official name and no longer be called Room 1 or The Samoan Bilingual Class. ULIMASAO means 'Steer and proceed our boat cautiously and safely on our journey'. 'Ia alu ia le Malaga ia ULIMASAO'. Ulimasao’s class councillor for 2016 is Zion Callaghan – Faafetai. Malo lava Zion, you now need to be an awesome role model for Ulimasao. Show them how to be Respectful, Responsible and Engaged in all that you do. Our swimming lessons start this week for the next 4 weeks. For Team Taonga, swimming is on Wednesday from 9am to 11am at Kelston Girls College. Make sure your child needs to bring appropriate swimming clothes including towel and a plastic bag for wet gear. Friday the 18th March is our trip to Polyfest. It is part of our WE ARE KELSTON Inquiry this term. We leave school at 11am and arrive back at school about 5:30pm. Once again, faafetai tele lava for entrusting your child in our care and I am extremely happy to have them in my class. There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm in this class, also they are very talented and sporty bunch of students. Ma lo’u fa’aaloalo lava, Mr A Williams
