Kia ora tātou, We have had a number of events that show cased Kelston talent this term. I really enjoyed attending the Kelstons got talent show on Wednesday 29th August. It was a great night and very entertaining. Congratulations to JJ Wilson and Chenaniah Amosa who were joint winners. Their performance was beautiful and it was lovely to see the spirit of cooperation between the two schools. All the performers did a great job and the MCs were an entertaining experience as well. Thank you to Westcity youth trust for all the organization. There were some very lucky students who were selected to meet the All Blacks before the recent Bledisloe test. Serena Holland and Haileni Vetekina were chosen by the ASB young leaders experience to join the pre match Captains Run which included a tour of Eden park. Congratulations to the two of them and I hope they enjoyed themselves. It is also great to hear about ex-students doing great things. Congratulations to Antonia Kamo (nee Stehlin) Writer / Director - who has had another successful season of her controversial play Brown..Its Complicated”. It is an example of what happens when you speak through the language of laughter and is an insight into navigating the Kiwi -Pacific life. Congratulations to the Black Ferns for their convincing win over Australia recently. It was great to see the Itunu sisters, ex Kelston students, making their mark. It is fabulous to see the profile of the Black Ferns getting higher and womens sport finally getting more profile in the media. Nationally and locally, there are some opportunities for us all to give our views about the education system. Girls in High-Vis Some of our Year 11 Science students had the chance to discover the ins and outs of a career in civil engineering on Wednesday 15th August when Engineers from HEB Construction visited. Ben Parsonage and Samantha Riley, Civil Engineers at HEB, spent the morning with the students showing them the many perks of a career in Engineering. Samantha explained that the variety of tasks within the role, the need to manage large scale projects and budgets and the chance to work both inside the office and on the construction site made the job an exciting one. The girls then participated enthusiastically in a bridge building competition where they had 20 minutes, a roll of sellotape and a handful of bamboo skewers to construct a bridge that would span a 40 cm gap between two tables and hold the weight of several large library books. The winning team used the supportive structure of triangles to create a bridge that held seven encyclopedias. After lunch the girls were bussed to Northcote where they saw sections of the 5km long cycle way and pavement upgrade that is underway. They heard from another female engineer and also learnt about some of the logistical issues that the team face including avoiding digging up water mains or fiber optic cables. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about an industry that is unfamiliar to many and also the fantastic careers that will be open to them if they continue studying Science and Math's in Years 12 and 13. KEL- On August 16 the Kelston Chamber Group held their 13th annual concert in conjunction with the Kelston Music Centre Strings. The chamber group gave the full auditorium an outstanding evening of music with beautiful solo performances by Emerald Colman, violin, Lauren Millar, flute, and Yuka Wikimoto, piano. Twenty four local children joined the Chamber Group in the second half as part of the Chamber Group's Developing Players programme. They were stars of the evening for their families and wowed everyone with their beautiful full string sound! A huge congratulations to the Chamber Group and the KGC staff who helped give Kelston a wonderful evening of music.
