Paul Harris

Born in Racine,

Wisconsin, USA on April

19, Paul P Harris spent

his early years in

Wallingford, Vermont. He

went on to study Law at

the University of Iowa,

and following his

graduation in 1891,

spent the next five years

seeing the world. He then went to Chicago to

practice law. Today Rotary is well known

throughout the world for its dedication to

service and international goodwill. This was

hardly uppermost in the mind of Paul Harris

when he founded the organisation in Chicago

in 1905. He envisioned a new kind of club for

professionals that could recapture some of the

friendly spirit among businessmen that had

existed in smaller communities. On Feb 23

1905, he invited three friends to a meeting

where they discussed Harris’ idea that

business leaders should meet periodically to

enjoy fellowship and to enlarge their circle of

business and professional acquaintances.

Among them was a coal merchant, a mining

engineer, a merchant tailor and Harris, a

lawyer.

The club met weekly and membership was

limited to one representative from each

business and profession. Though the term

Rotary was not used that night, it is commonly

regarded as the first Rotary meeting. Paul

Harris named the club „Rotary„ because

members met in rotation at various places of

business. The name met with general

approval and club membership grew rapidly.

When Paul Harris became Club President in

its third year, he was anxious to extend Rotary

to other cities because he was convinced that

the Rotary Club could be developed into an

important service movement.

Rotary International President

Mark Daniel Maloney RI President 2019-20 Rotary Club of Decatur Alabama, USA

Mark Daniel Maloney is a principal in the law firm of Blackburn, Maloney, and Schuppert LLC, with a focus on taxation, estate

planning, and agricultural law. He represents large farming operations in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States, and has chaired the American Bar Association’s Committee on Agriculture in the section of taxation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar Association, and the Alabama Law Institute. He has been active in Decatur’s religious community, chairing his church’s finance council and a local Catholic school board. He has also served as president of the Community Foundation of Greater Decatur, chair of Morgan County Meals on Wheels, and director of the United Way of Morgan County and the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. A Rotarian since 1980, Maloney has served as an RI director; Foundation trustee and vice chair; and aide to 2003-04 RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe. He also has participated in the Council on Legislation as chair, vice chair, parliamentarian, and trainer. He was an adviser to the 2004 Osaka Convention Committee and chaired the 2014 Sydney Convention Committee. Prior to serving as a district governor, Maloney led a Group Study Exchange to Nigeria. He also served as Future Vision Committee vice chair; regional Rotary Foundation coordinator; Foundation training institute moderator; Foundation permanent fund national adviser; member of the Peace Centers Committee; and adviser to the Foundation’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools Target Challenge Committee.

Dear fellow Rotarians, When Gay and I began practicing law, we joined my father-in-law, Gilmer Blackburn, in his law firm. He had been practicing law in Decatur, Alabama, for more than 25 years and, in that time, had also served for six years as the mayor of our city. One of the first things he taught us when we joined the firm — something he never stopped teaching, by word and by example — was the importance of paying what he referred to as our “civic rent.” He considered paying your civic rent an obligation similar to paying your taxes or contributing to your place of worship. You benefit from being here, and those benefits are not free. You need to give something back for the privilege of being part of your community. Organizations like Rotary allow us to pay our civic rent to our local and global communities. And when we join Rotary — when we work to keep the organization itself strong, when we give back through Rotary with our abilities, our time, and our resources — we are declaring that we know that our presence in this world carries with it the obligation to serve. All of the service that Rotary does, all of the lives we change, all of the children in the world who will never, ever get polio — all of this happens because we, joining together through Rotary, are strong. Because Rotarians, with the family of Rotary, have risen to the challenge and with each passing year strive to make our world a better place. As a global organization with over 1.2 million members, Rotary Connects the World. You help make that connection last and ensure both Rotary’s legacy and its future. Kindest regards, Mark Daniel Maloney Rotary International President, 2019-2020

District Governor

Ian Kiernan Governor D9910 2019-20

Born 1960 in Henderson, Auckland, Ian is the eldest of 4

children and has 2 brothers and 1 sister. His early

childhood was spent in Kelston West Auckland, but the

family moved around the city in subsequent years

eventually settling in Mt Albert. Ian attended St

Leonards Rd Primary in Kelston, Maungawhau Primary

in Mt Eden, Auckland Normal in Epsom and Mt Albert

Grammar School from 1973 to 1977. In 1975 the Family

relocated to Norfolk Island, however Ian remained in

Auckland to finish his schooling. He boarded with an Uncle and Aunt returning to Norfolk Island for

school holidays. Upon completing high school Ian returned to Norfolk Island and commenced work in

the local Foodland Supermarket.

In 1979 Ian was offered the opportunity to work in the Supermarket Industry back in Auckland whilst

also undergoing industry management training with Foodstuffs. Working first in a 4 Square Store in

Freemans Bay, Ian progressed to Milford New World Supermarket where he worked for 5 years – 3

years as Manager. In 1984 Ian was awarded a Foodstuffs Management Scholarship. It was during

this time in Auckland that Ian met and married his Wife Jasmine in 1980. Ian and Jasmine moved to

Norfolk Island permanently in 1985 where they have resided ever since. Currently Ian is a Director &

General Manager of Norfolk Island Supermarkets Pty Ltd and partially involved in family businesses

Celtic Shipping Services and Kiernan Agencies.

Ian’s involvement with Rotary commenced during his

teenage years when he attended Rotary meetings

with his father and had active involvement in Rotary

projects when back on Norfolk Island for holidays.

In particular he recalls the Rotary Beach Carnivals

held each summer on Boxing Day at Emily Bay.

When Jasmine and Ian returned to live permanently

on Norfolk Island, Ian was invited to join Rotary as a

full member at the age of 26. Ian has held every

Rotary Club position in the club including President

five times.

Aside from Rotary Ian has been involved in voluntary roles with many Community organisations and sporting bodies on Norfolk Island, including 12 years as a Board Member and Treasurer of the Norfolk Island Golf Club. Ian’s early sporting interests included Rugby League and Squash, and he has represented Norfolk Island in both. Today he is an avid golfer with very low ability and a correspondingly high handicap.

WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE Chair Bruce Morrison [email protected] M: Rotary Club of North Harbour

This organisation was established to recognise the need to take a New Zealand wide view of World Community Service and each of the six NZ Districts are represented on the board. RNZWCS is registered with the Charities Commission (CC26860). Of particular importance is the MFAT requirement to have a single New Zealand interface when accessing funds. RNZWCS is recognised by the New Zealand Government as a Non Government Organisation [NGO]. Clubs seeking funding must work through RNZWCS who also maintain a register of potential projects and provide opportunities for clubs to participate in larger world community service projects. Details of the criteria and the procedure for applying for grants and other information can be found on the RNZWCS web site which can be accessed from www.rnzwcs.org. RNZWCS also operates a Donations in Kind scheme which advises on needs, provides storage and coordinates the distribution of goods, including emergency response kits, particularly to the Pacific Islands. Taxation (Tax Administration and Remedial Matters) Act 2011: Overseas donee status Schedule 32 of the Income Tax Act 2007 The following organisations have been granted overseas donee status from the 2012- 13 tax year: RNZWCS Limited (Rotary New Zealand)

Background Charities that apply some or all of their funds outside New Zealand must be approved for charitable donee status by Parliament. ShelterBox ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter and life-saving supplies to families around the world who are affected by disasters. ShelterBox responds to earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, hurricanes, landslides, typhoons and conflict, delivering lifesaving aid to families across the globe at a time when they need it the most. The ShelterBox solution is to provide a large box, tailored to each type of disaster but typically containing a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water purification and storage equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children's activity pack and other essential items. ShelterBox relies entirely on public donations and could not operate without the generosity of Rotarians and people the world over. A ShelterBox can be sponsored for NZ$1,500 – which takes into account the cost of all materials, packing, storage, transport worldwide and delivery to families in need at a time of disaster by a team of ShelterBox volunteers. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Team volunteers or SRT‟s, distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local government organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide. Every ShelterBox bears its own unique number so that as a donor you can track your box all the way to its recipient country, via the ShelterBox website. To date more than I million people have been provided with shelter, warmth and dignity following more than 170 disasters, in over 75 countries. Donations can be made on the ShelterBox website: www.shelterbox.org.nz DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE Owen Smith (SRT) M 027 226 1707 [email protected]

INTERPLAST Interplast sends teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals to provide life-changing surgery and medical training in 17 countries across the Asia Pacific region. We do this in partnership with local organisations, including hospitals, universities and local NGOs. Our mission is to „repair bodies and rebuild lives‟ and we do this through providing surgical services to those who could not otherwise afford or access these, and by building the capacity of local medical systems through our training and mentoring programs. ROMAC Barbara Watt – Rotary Club of Henderson [email protected] Administrator Geoff Pownall – Rotary Club of Takapuna H: (09) 627 9565 M: (021) 627 014 [email protected] To provide medical treatment for children 15 years and under, who are from developing countries of the South Pacific region, for lifesaving and/or dignity restoring surgery not accessible to them in their home country.

Objectives To provide hope where there is no hope To restore dignity to human life To transform a child’s life To provide the best medical and surgical expertise To mend broken lives of young people from developing countries To contribute to understanding and peace in the Pacific region ROMAC is a humanitarian Rotary programme which has been in operation since 1988. Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise to run this Rotary programme which encompasses and is endorsed by all Australian and New Zealand Rotary Districts. ROMAC has no employees, no buildings, and no vehicles and consequently almost 100% of donations and grants received by ROMAC is spent on the children. Eminent Australian and New Zealand surgeons donate their time for the treatment of our patients and these surgeons get unique opportunities to develop their specialist skills. During their recovery after surgery, the children and care-giver are looked after by New Zealand families, fostering international learning and understanding in the process.

Cure Kids

Cure Kids are New Zealand’s leading charitable funder in child health research. Our vision is a healthy childhood for everyone. Since Cure Kids, formerly known as The Child Health Research Foundation, was established by Rotary in New Zealand 45 years ago, more than $40 million has been invested in vital child health research. Cure Kids has enabled vast improvements in the health of children – extending, improving and saving the lives of kids both here, and around the world. Cure Kids are the only charity in New Zealand that funds research across a broad spectrum of child health. We have funded, or are currently funding research investigating better treatments and cures for inherited heart conditions, cystic fibrosis, childhood cancers, sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), stillbirth, burns and child and adolescent mental health, among many others. We are very fortunate to live in New Zealand where our access to healthcare is far beyond that of many other countries, however, the reality remains that there is still so much more to be done to address alarming health statistics.
