PROFILE

2000 - 2005 Immediately after the special training in Mental Health she started work as a Medical Officer of Mental Health at the Base Hospital, Kahawatta.

This was a special period that involved setting up the Mental Heal Unit from scratch, creating awareness in the community and treating patients.

She also formed a community based NGO named “MEHEF” (Mental Health Foundation - Kahawatta) with the support of public and private organisations. The foundation proved very successful and gained immense patronage from the community. The foundation was instrumental in forming caretaker groups and provide referral support for the those needing mental health support in the community. Through the foundation she was able to organise and conduct numerous community awareness programs, teacher training programs, student support programs and family counselling initiatives.

She was also able to establish a rehabilitation centre for the mentally ill patients with the support of the hospital administration and the community. The rehabilitation programs included, treatment, occupational therapy, counselling and recreational activities such as trips and sport events.

She also participated in special motivational programs for flood victims of Rathnapura district in 2003 and provided mental health support to the Tsunami victims in 2004.
