Who are we?

UnitingCare ReGen is the leading alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment and education agency of UnitingCare Victoria and Tasmania.

What do we do?

The ReGen Education and Training Department employs skilled clinicians and educators who develop and deliver high quality educational programs to the community sector and beyond.

On offer is a suite of professional development workshops for both clinical and non-clinical staff, including: working with groups, dealing with clients who may be angry, equal opportunity and consumer participation training. The Professional Development workshops are scheduled upon request and fees are negotiated depending on the specific workshop structure. Contact ReGen for more information.

As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), ReGen also provides Nationally Recognised competency-based training in First Aid, AOD, mental health and suicide prevention from the Community Services & Health training packages, designed to meet core competency requirements for workers in these fields.

Our First Aid training, from the Health Training package is designed for all staff within an organisation not only those who are delivering direct service.

HLTAID003: Provide First Aid

8 hours training + self paced learning

First Aid is essential for direct care workers in the Health and Community sectors. This training is the equivalent of what was formerly known as Level 2 First Aid. It includes the full complement of first aid presentations and is contextualised to consider First Aid in the community sector. Particular attention is given to overdose response, needle-stick injury and blood borne viruses. This unit can be customised to meet the needs of your organisation.

HLTAID001: Provide CPR

3.5 hrs

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) according to the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Workshops are capped at 12 participants to allow clinicians time and support to embed the critical skills of resuscitation

ReGen also provide a series of workshops suitable for all staff withing community services organisations

Equal Opportunity Training

2 hrs

This interactive workshop provides an overview of employee rights, responsibilities and complaint resolution as outlined in the organisational equal opportunity policies and procedures in accordance with relevant legislation. On completion of the training, participants will have an understanding of legal definitions of discrimination, sexual harassment, victimisation and bullying, and be able to identify unlawful behaviour.

Consumer Participation for Organisations

2 – 4 hrs

Consumer participation is an essential component of service planning and delivery in the AOD and Mental Health sectors. Consumer participants contribute expertise and ideas developed from their service-use experience, ensuring equality and relevance of service, rather than a top-down approach. This workshop explores what consumer participation is and why it is important. Longer workshops will include planning to incorporate consumer participation into service delivery.

Introduction to Alcohol and Other Drugs

2 – 4 hrs

This workshop is designed for organisations outside the AOD sector who find that a base knowledge of AOD work would be useful in interacting with their client group. The session provides a broad overview of AOD treatment in Victoria. This workshop can be customised to suit your organisation or workforce needs.

Online Orientation to the Organisation

Online – self paced

An effective orientation program is essential to staff integration, wellbeing and retention. ReGen has developed an online orientation framework and can work with organisations to customise this to their requirements. This resource includes information from all areas of the organisation; a focus on the values, mission and strategic plan; quizzes on client care and legislation and other activities.

Please note: this resource does not replace essential orientation visits to services and meetings with key staff. It is designed to provide a reinforcing adjunct to standard orientation processes.

Reception Frontline Workers –

Dealing with Clients who may be Angry

2 hrs

This training provides frontline workers with the knowledge and skills to manage a conflict situation within the appropriate limitations of a frontline workers’ role. The workshop covers the following topics:

− The stages of anger and aggression

− Early warning signs of anger and aggression

− How to respond effectively and what can be expected from non-clinical and clinical staff

− Strategies to de-escalate conflict

− Looking after yourself

Reception & Administration Workers –

Dealing with Intoxicated Clients

2 hrs

This workshop provides frontline workers with the knowledge and skills to manage a client who is intoxicated within the appropriate limitations of their role. This following topics are covered:

− The signs and symptoms of intoxication

− Drugs and their effects

− How to respond effectively and what can be expected from non-clinical and clinical staff

− Looking after yourself

Reception & Administration Workers –

Creating a Welcoming Environment

2 hrs

Evidence is increasingly recognising the relationship between creating a welcoming environment for clients and successful treatment outcomes. Frontline workers provide the first impression – thereby influencing the success of the ‘therapeutic alliance’, or strong rapport, which is understood to both increase retention in treatment and improve treatment outcomes.

This interactive training recognises and supports the important role that frontline workers play in service provision. The training provides a strong evidence base for frontline workers to view their defined work as part of an integrated therapeutic team. It explores practical ways to create a welcoming service while at the same time recognising the boundaries of their role.

Workshops

Working with Groups

4 hrs

This workshop explores the nature of group work and skills required for the facilitation of groups within the AOD or Mental Health sectors. Topics include:

− exploring the evidence for efficacy of groups

− common characteristics of groups

− stages in group development

− benefits of group work

− the importance of planning

− facilitation skills

− managing complex situations

− responding to different needs

− evaluation

This practical and interactive workshop is based on the development of skills for psychoeducational group work, as opposed to therapeutic groups, and is aligned to the Unit of Competency CHCGROUP403D.

ABI/AOD Workshop

4 hrs

This workshop explores the ways to work with clients who have AOD issues as well as potential or diagnosed Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Topics include a brief outline of neuroanatomy; how, when and why to screen for ABI; what the ABI and AOD services expect from their consumers; and strategies for clinicians to use with clients who have diagnosed ABI, or high possibility of having an ABI.

Competency Based Training

ReGen delivers competency-based training in AOD and Mental Health as part of the Community Services training package, designed to meet core competency requirements for workers in these fields. ReGen have designed these competencies for direct service workers who are currently working in the Community Services sector.

All of these units are delivered face to face over three days unless otherwise specified.

CHCAOD402B: Work effectively in

the AOD sector

Online

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required by all workers who may be working primarily with clients with AOD issues. The unit provides a basic introduction to values, the philosophy, legislation, pharmacology, the service system and an overview of some of the therapeutic models applied in this sector.

mental health settings &

These units delivered and assessed together describes the knowledge and skills required in the context and across the range of settings where mental health work occurs. The units provide a basic introduction to values, the philosophy, legislation, the mental health disorders, the service system and an overview of

some of the therapeutic models applied in this sector as well as the knowledge and skills required to contribute to the recovery of people affected by a mental illness in the context of the impact of mental illness on clients, their carer/s and families

CHCAOD406E: Work with clients who

are intoxicated

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to work with alcohol and/or other drugs-affected clients in a range of settings. The unit focuses on assessing, monitoring and managing clients who are intoxicated, and harm minimisation strategies.

CHCAOD408B: Assess the needs of

clients who have alcohol and/or other

drug issues

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to assess clients’ needs, and identify options for appropriate community services to support their needs.

This unit includes applying standard processes and procedures to provide a comprehensive assessment of clients’ AOD issues and other needs; developing case plans based on the assessment; and referring clients to other services as required.

CHCAOD510B: Work with clients with

complex alcohol and/or other drug

issues

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to provide a range of community services to meet the needs of clients who may have AOD issues, which may be combined with other issues. It

also covers the review of client progress and evaluation of all work undertaken with clients and includes training on micro skills, motivation interviewing and relapse prevention.

CHCMH504E: Provide a range of

services to people with mental health

issues

4 days

This unit relates to collaboratively assessing needs, providing a range of services to meet needs, reviewing progress and evaluating the work undertaken with clients with mental health issues.

CHCCS521B: Assess and respond to

individuals as risk of suicide

The unit explores the participant’s personal attitudes, values and beliefs surrounding suicide and the possible impact of these on suicide prevention interventions. This interactive unit assists professionals in addressing suicide ideation and supporting individuals in crisis.

ReGen delivers competency-based training in AOD and mental health as part of the Community Services package, designed to meet core competency requirements for workers in these fields. Training is delivered at ReGen or on site at your workplace. Training for all competencies is three days, unless otherwise stated.

Client Courses

Alcohol - Considering Change?

2.5 hrs (Client Cost: Free)

This program is delivered in a relaxed, informal and non-judgemental environment. The session provides information on the potential harms of alcohol use, the risks associated with your pattern of drinking and strategies you might use to reduce these risks – including drinking less harmfully, cutting down or stopping altogether. The program is open to anyone concerned about their own drinking or another person’s drinking (including family members & friends).

Methamphetamine First Aid for

Families

2 hrs (Client Cost: Free)

The Methamphetamine First Aid for Families is an education program for parents and significant others concerned about their loved one’s methamphetamine use. The program aims to provide participants with methamphetamine specific education and its effects and how different risk factors can affect ones drug using experience. The program discusses how to manage certain risks and harms and self-care strategies for families and significant others. The program aims to provide participants with information and education and is not a replacement for traditional first aid courses.

Methamphetamine Personal

Education Program (MPEP)

3 hrs (Client Cost: Free)

MPEP is an education program designed for people who have been placed on a diversion program or for people concerned about their methamphetamine use. The program incorporates a range of strategies designed to engage participants, providing an opportunity to reflect on the impact of methamphetamine use on their lives and those people around them. Furthermore, participants are supported to develop strategies associated with various stages of behaviour change, including harm reduction, planning for change, getting through withdrawal and relapse prevention.

Cautious With Cannabis

2 hrs (Client Cost: Free)

Cautious with Cannabis was originally designed to provide information and support to people who had been cautioned by the police in relation to their cannabis use. However anyone (including family members & friends) who wishes to know more about cannabis and strategies which can help to reduce the harms, cut down or stop using may find the program useful.

How do I get to ReGen?

ReGen’s main site is at 26 Jessie St, Coburg (8 km north of the city).

Jessie Street is three minutes from the Moreland train station (Upfield line).

Bus number 510 runs along Moreland Road, and stops near Moreland railway station. Tram numbers 19 (Sydney Rd) and 8 (Lygon St) stop at the corner of Sydney and Moreland Roads, which is an eight minute stroll.
