What is Jump Rope?AJump Rope, Rope Skipping, Skipping Rope or Skip Rope is all just synonyms. It forms the basic foundation of every sport. Here the Jumper/ participant jump over aspinning rope so that it passes under their feet and over their heads. Jump Rope isnot the nascent to India. It is been popularized among Indians. Even in Dwapar Yug ,Sh. Radha Rani used to skip. There are more than 950 different tricks/techniques of

    skipping rope.

Jump ropes are made of cloth, licorice, plastic, beaded string, or plastic-coatedwire/cables. Cloth and beaded ropes hold their shape better, while plastic andcoated-cable ropes are designed for speed.

As you must aware of the following equation

    Value = Costs/ Benefits

But in case of Jump Rope one can say that as it is known as most cost effective sportso Jump Rope has more Value. Even current research is showing that high impactactivities, such as jumping rope, can also help maintain and/or build healthy bones.

Another big plus is that the cost is minimal a place to jump, a good rope, and a pairof supportive athletic shoes are all you need. Jumping rope actually has a lot goingfor it as an exercise. Jump Rope can assist in developing agility, coordination, andbalance, not to mention improvements in cardiovascular and muscular endurance.

Jump Rope increased speed, power, agility & explosiveness. Nonetheless, manysports coaches, fitness trainers & sports enthusiasts remain unaware of the fullpotential of it.

Jump Rope or Rope Skipping is the most kidult, cost effective sport which strengthensthe stamina of the individual and helps the obese to lose weight and increases theappetite of anorexic people. There is no age related factor associated with this sport. It forms the basic foundation of every sport. This may consist of two participantsturning (Turner) and jumping the rope (Jumper); this form of the activity is called

    Double Dutch.

Coaches DevelopmentIn order to develop the coaches, JRFI installed a new forum where the coaches shall get toknow about the technical advancements is been made during National Championships sothat they shall not surprise at National & know exactly where a jumper can score well. It isbeen seen normally that the jumpers reach to disqualification very soon without knowing thereason for it. Even now by answering the polls JRFI technical department can easily reach to

the conclusion that weather the amendment made in Rules are acceptable or not. This is not all at every FY JRFI is preparing few of its Guidelines which are been distributedby a proper channel & this will even not cost a single penny for them. The Guidelinesprepared in 2010-11 are as follows :

    1. Basic Double Dutch Training for Coachs2. Jump Rope Skills (Level 1 & 2)3. Jumpers Guideline4. Log Book

    Benefits of Jump Rope

    1. Here in India most of the children do single bounce (to have the rope swingsone time under the feet ) without knowing the fact that it has more than 950 skills & it

is a sport. They are just doing it for fun & trying to get indulge into the core of JumpRope. There are few events like freestyle, Double dutch freestyle, Fusion Style wherethe jumpers are free to do anything with Rope on Music.

    2. When children practice it with their friends, it develops a sense of teamworkand social skills in you. It makes them more vigilant and alert. It increases yourattention skills. Skipping enhances flexibility and athletic abilities. It improves yourreflexes, balance and posture. Jump Rope is the game of endurance, speed andsportsmanship.

    3. Physical activity is a major risk factor of cardiovascular diseases. Jump Ropecan help your heart whether its included in Exercise program or daily routine.

    4. Physical activity is also good for brain, feeding it glucose & Oxygen all ofwhich make easier for Children of all ages learn & memorize

    5. It improves the figure by tightening flabby muscles and loose flesh on thearms, thighs, buttocks and calves. Prolonged skipping improves the bust and posture, and combined with a calorie-controlled diet, a skipping program will help to shedpounds in ladies.6. The boxer needs to be fast on his feet. Skipping will greatly increase speedand lightness on his feet. 10 second and 30 second bursts of speed skipping areneeded and can be easily achieved.

    7. The Jump Rope is the most cost effective sport in respect of requirement ofaccessories & ground Facility (as for this you just need 4 x 4 m surface).

    8. It strengthens the stamina of the individual and helps the obese to lose weightand increases the appetite of anorexic people. It is so effective in burning calories thatan hour of skipping rope will make you burn up to 1000 calories.

    9. There is no age related factor associated with this sport.10. The backbone of all sport is Jump rope as it helps to enhance the endurance &stamina which puts the basic foundation of all sport. It is found that Jump rope isadopted by most of the sport without knowing the fact that it is just not the exercise.

Misconception & TruthsThe Jump Rope is not new sport at all for India but still it is always surrounded by manymisconceptions. The Jump Rope is been associated as a girl sport by most of the people& even by others it is been taken as high impact exercise which may leads to kneeinjury. But the truth is completely contradictory. The Jump Rope is the sport which helpsin making the muscles & bones stronger. Jump Rope also show the way to burn morecalories than do most aerobic activities & reduces risk to Osteoporosis which is foundmore common in Old age. Jump Rope needs the coordination especially in Double Dutchevent. It is to a degree depends on turner & to the rest of measure it depends on Jumper.Few people are afraid of it because of the reason that they have lack of co-ordination &feel humiliated whenever they made miss even if it is minor. The best way is wheneveryou think about Jump Rope just dont make too much hurry to jump into next more

tougher skills. Jump Rope is been done only when your mind is calm & enjoy your routinethoroughly.

    Floor Surface

The exercise surface is very important.

Equipments (Correct Jump Rope)There are basically 2 types of practice rope available. These Rope are also known asLicorice rope. The lightweight rope are been used for speed as they has minimal airresistance while heavy weight ropes has more air resistance & it is been used forincreasing power. The licorice ropes are made up of PVC (Poly vinyl Chloride). It is beensuggested that when a jumper is making a good score with licorice rope (Here the goodscore means 55 right feet count), the time comes when s/he should switch from licoriceto Cable Rope which is more aerodynamically stronger & provides lesser air resistance. And hence, improves the score of the jumper.

The length of the rope should be right for your height. Stand on the centre of the rope, and lift the handles upward. The point where the handles meet the rope should be levelwith your armpits. Some types of rope allow you to cut them down to size but if yourrope is the wrong length dont despair! Tie knots near the handles to make alterations

Any kind of Rope can be used but battery powered ropes are illegal in NationalLevel Competition / Championship.

Double Dutch Ropes are between 4 and 6 meter long.

Long Ropes are 10 meter long.

    IDEAL ROPE LENGTHS are:

    Rope Length Suitable For heights7 ft. Up to - 4'10"8 ft. 4' 10" - 5' 3"9 ft. 5 4" - 5' 10"10 ft. 5' 10" - 6'6"

You can use this table as rough guide to adjust your rope

    Points to ponder

For novices, a beaded rope is recommended because it holds its shape and is easierto control than a lightweight cloth or vinyl rope.

Adjust the rope by holding the handles and stepping on the rope.

Shorten the rope so the handles reach your armpits.

Wear properly fitted athletic shoes, preferably cross-training shoes.
