• Keep all calendars up to date in ALL assigning sites.– Yes: this means up to 4 web sites!

• Re-assigning wastes time!• If you accept a game:

– Block your availability in other sites– Allow time for travel between games!

Open Game Emails

• Broadcast to many referees• Assignors get many responses• Raise your hand if available!

– A great way to move up– You are doing a favor to your

assignor– Respond quickly!

• An open game email is NOT an assignment!

Turning Back Games

• How to get fewer games:–Turn back after accepting a game–Frequent turn backs–Being “Picky” about assignments

• Reliability = more assignments


• Check your schedule–MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO

OVERLAPS–Allow for travel time and late starts–Plan to arrive ½ hour before kickoff

• If there is a problem, contact your assignor immediately!

Assignment Etiquette


DO NOT officiate games of:• Siblings• Parents / Children• Cousins• Best friends • Do not be overly friendly with coaches prior to

or after games – this gives impression of favoritism!

Conflicts of interest



Assignor Communication

• Do know who assigned your game!• Keep in contact with assignor if there are

serious issues• Don’t bother assignor with:

• Who am I working with?• Is my game cancelled?• Game issues from other assignors

• Referee contacts crew by email– Arrange a meeting place– Make sure you have cell phone numbers

• Are there special league rules?• Do I collect money at the field?

– How much, and which team pays?

Day before match


• Do not be late to a game!• Check field and equipment for safety• Check player equipment• Do not allow teams to change the rules of

competition• Know league rules• Do not change rules or format of game

• Even if coaches insist!


On the Field

• Check for cancellations:– Assignment System / League Web Sites

• Professional appearance– Does not include sunglasses– Complete and proper uniform

• Check-in players AND coaches– No need to make them stand in a line!– Photos must match the individual

• Kick off on time!

Referee Assault & Abuse

• Referee Assault: – An intentional act of physical violence at or upon a

referee

• Referee Abuse: – Threats through a physical act or verbal statement– Verbal and nonverbal communication which contains

foul or abusive language and which implies or directly threatens physical harm;

– Spewing a beverage on or spitting at a referee or the referee’s personal property

• If you decide to continue the match, the adult must be dismissed (red card).– If the situation is unsafe, abandon the match and report

the dismissal in writing.– The incident must be in game report - FACTS ONLY

• Identify witnesses• DO NOT WAIT – Notify assignor / SRA immediately after

match• FORMAL PUNISHMENT CAN ONLY OCCUR IF THE

ADULT IS DISMISSED FROM THE FIELD• WE WILL SUPPORT YOU

Reporting Assault


• As a top 100 referee you need to have your own email.

• This way all notifications will go directly to the referee

• you will be able to manage your calendar• receive game notifications cancellations changes• receive all open game emails• Receive any information from the state• Parents can be secondary on contact information to

help monitor behind the scenes all activity and scheduling

2 Types of Assessments:• Informal:

– For development and guidance– Cost: $0– Often at events such as RI Cup and State Cup.

• Formal:– Required for higher grades– Cost: $80– Follow specific criteria– Online in GameOfficials

Expected to demonstrate the following:

• Elementary knowledge of the game• Obvious fouls and misconduct• Keeps their ARs (assistant referee) in view while

running a diagonal• Has basic fitness• Gives basic pregame focusing on mechanics,

signals and proper communication

• Arrives in proper uniform and gives good first impression• Applies laws of the game• Doesn’t understand spirit of the game• Deals with obvious violent conduct or serious fouls• Ignores coaches generally do not ensure they behave and

are not abusive• Main focus is on fouls; lacks personality to manage players

when game demands it.

Expected to Demonstrate:• Fitness to run a “flexible” diagonal for the entire game and

ALWAYS keeps AR’s in view• Has a work rate that varies from a jog, light sprint to a full

sprint when game demands it• Has firm grasp on laws of the game• Understands when to invoke “spirit of the game” vs. letter

of the law while managing players• Demonstrates personality in managing players and

preventative mechanics to avoid problems during the match

• Demonstrates self confidence in decisions• Willing to be approached by players that have questions• Demonstrates strong presence with use of whistle,

appearance and body language• Demonstrates proper use of advantage• Demonstrates foul recognition and foul discrimination• Makes good use of cards for game control• Good card mechanics• Makes effective use of AR’s on off-sides and misconduct• Ignores dissent rather than deal with it
