Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Pentecost is the feast of the coming of the Holy Spirit but it is also the formal presentation of the Church that the Lord Jesus intended to establish on the shoulders of Peter as is evident from the text in the Gospel according to St. Matthew, chapter 16. This Church, Christ’s con-tinued presence in human history, is sustained in her mission by the action of the Holy Spirit that creates unity in diversity and empowers the disciples of Christ to boldly go out into the world to proclaim the Good News of salvation.The Second Vatican Council resorts to an analogy to describe the mystery of the Church and affirms that she is in Christ like a sacrament. This analogy with the seven sacraments is helpful to understand that the Church makes Christ present in the world. She is the ordinary chan-nel through which the Lord dispenses grace and brings about the work of salvation. Indeed, the deepest reality in the life of the Church is the presence of Christ, Risen from the dead, victorious over sin and death. The action of the Holy Spirit animates her so that the sanctifying presence of Christ dwelling in her may be brought to bear in human affairs both collectively and in the life of every single human being, beloved of God, created for his or her own sake, called to eternal communion with God.To further illuminate the mystery of the Church, the Council presents to us many images found in Sacred Scripture. “In the old Testament the revelation of the Kingdom is often conveyed by means of metaphors. In the same way the inner nature of the Church is now made known to us in different images taken either from tending sheep or cultivating the land, from building or even from family life and betrothals, the images receive preparatory shaping in the books of the Prophets.

The Church is a sheepfold whose one and indispensable door is Christ. It is a flock of which God Himself foretold He would be the shepherd, and whose sheep, although ruled by human shepherds; are nevertheless continuously led and nourished by Christ Himself, the Good Shep-herd and the Prince of the shepherds, who gave His life for the sheep.The Church is a piece of land to be cultivated, the tillage of God. On that land the ancient olive tree grows whose holy roots were the Prophets and in which the reconciliation of Jews and Gentiles has been brought about and will be brought about. That land, like a choice vineyard, has been planted by the heavenly Husbandman. The true vine is Christ who gives life and the power to bear abundant fruit to the branches, that is, to us, who through the Church remain in Christ without whom we can do nothing.Often the Church has also been called the building of God. The Lord Himself compared Himself to the stone which the builders rejected, but which was made into the cornerstone. On this foundation the Church is built by the apostles, and from it the Church receives durability and consolidation. This edifice has many names to describe it: the house of God in which dwells His family; the household of God in the Spirit; the dwelling place of God among men; and, especially, the holy temple. This Temple, symbolized in places of worship built out of stone, is praised by the Holy Fathers and, not without reason, is compared in the liturgy to the Holy City, the New Jerusalem. As living stones we here on earth are built into it. John contemplates this holy city coming down from heaven at the renewal of the world as a bride made ready and adorned for her husband.

The Church, further, "that Jerusalem which is above" is also called "our mother". It is described as the spotless spouse of the spotless Lamb, whom Christ "loved and for whom He delivered Himself up that He might sanctify her", whom He unites to Himself by an unbreakable cov-enant, and whom He unceasingly "nourishes and cherishes", and whom, once purified, He willed to be cleansed and joined to Himself, subject to Him in love and fidelity, and whom, finally, He filled with heavenly gifts for all eternity, in order that we may know the love of God and of Christ for us, a love which surpasses all knowledge. The Church, while on earth it journeys in a foreign land away from the Lord, is like in exile. It seeks and experiences those things which are above, where Christ is seated at the right-hand of God, where the life of the Church is hidden with Christ in God until it appears in glory with its Spouse.”In the Letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul uses beautiful imagery to describe the Church. For example, in chapter 5 he likens the union of Christ and his Church to Christian marriage, the love of husband and wife. Throughout the Letter, he describes the Church as the Body of Christ. In the 19th century this image became the foundation for a movement that emphasized the image of the Church as a “mystical body” united with Christ by hierarchical, historical, visible bonds that constituted a continuation of the mystery of the Incarnation in time. Pope Pius XII enthusiastically embraced this image of the Church as the incarnate mystical body of Christ, paving the way for the renewal brought about by the Second Vatican Council with its emphasis on the need for all Christians to answer the universal call to holiness, by living out our baptismal vocation in the ordinary affairs of life.

We are the Church because we have been baptized. The holier we are, the closer our bonds of communion with Christ, the more we are the Church, because it is He who makes the Church what she is. It is His presence in us that makes it possible for us to act in the Spirit and be coworkers in the vineyard of the Lord for the sanctification of the world.

Pentecostés es la fiesta de la venida del Espíritu Santo pero es también la presentación formal de la Iglesia que el Señor Jesús quiso establecer apoyada sobre los hombros de Pedro, como se desprende del texto del capítulo 16 del Evangelio según san Mateo. Esta Iglesia, presencia continuada de Cristo en la historia humana, se sostiene en su misión por la acción del Espíritu Santo que crea unidad en la diversidad y da a sus discípulos el poder de Cristo para que salgamos al mundo con audacia y proclamemos la Buena Nueva de la salvación.El Concilio Vaticano II recurre a una analogía para describir el misterio de la Iglesia y afirma que ella es en Cristo como un sacramento. Esta analogía con los siete sacramentos es útil para entender que la Iglesia hace presente a Cristo en el mundo. Ella es el canal ordinario a través del cual el Señor dispensa gracia y lleva adelante la obra de salvación. Así es, la realidad más profunda en la vida de la Iglesia es la presencia de Cristo, resucitado de entre los muertos, victorioso sobre el pecado y la muerte. La acción del Espíritu Santo la anima para que esa presencia santificante de Cristo en ella pueda influenciar todos los asuntos de la humanidad tanto a nivel colectivo como en la vida de cada ser humano, amado por Dios, creado como un fin en sí mismo, llamado a la comunión eterna con Dios.Para iluminar aún más el misterio de la Iglesia, el Concilio nos presenta varias imágenes que aparecen en la Sa-grada Escritura. “Del mismo modo que en el Antiguo Testamento la revelación del reino se propone frecuentemente en figuras, así ahora la naturaleza íntima de la Iglesia se nos manifiesta también mediante diversas imágenes to-madas de la vida pastoril, de la agricultura, de la edificación, como también de la familia y de los esponsales, las cuales están ya insinuadas en los libros de los profetas.Así la Iglesia es un redil, cuya única y obligada puerta es Cristo. Es también una grey, de la que el mismo Dios se profetizó Pastor, y cuyas ovejas, aunque conducidas ciertamente por pastores humanos, son, no obstante, guiadas y alimentadas continuamente por el mismo Cristo, buen Pastor y Príncipe de los pastores, que dio su vida por las ovejas.La Iglesia es labranza, o arada de Dios. En ese campo crece el vetusto olivo, cuya raíz santa fueron los patriarcas, y en el cual se realizó y concluirá la reconciliación de los judíos y gentiles. El celestial Agricultor la plantó como viña escogida. La verdadera vid es Cristo, que comunica vida y fecundidad a los sarmientos, que somos nosotros, que permanecemos en El por medio de la Iglesia, y sin El nada podemos hacer. A veces también la Iglesia es designada como edificación de Dios. El mismo Señor se comparó a la piedra que re-chazaron los constructores, pero que fue puesta como piedra angular. Sobre este fundamento los Apóstoles levan-tan la Iglesia y de él recibe esta firmeza y cohesión. Esta edificación recibe diversos nombres: casa de Dios, en que habita su familia; habitación de Dios en el Espíritu, tienda de Dios entre los hombres y sobre todo templo santo, que los Santos Padres celebran como representado en los templos de piedra, y la liturgia, no sin razón, la compara a la ciudad santa, la nueva Jerusalén. Efectivamente, en este mundo servimos, cual piedras vivas, para edificarla. San Juan contempla esta ciudad santa y bajando, en la renovación del mundo, de junto a Dios, ataviada como esposa engalanada para su esposo.

La Iglesia, llamada «Jerusalén de arriba» y «madre nuestra», es también descrita como esposa inmaculada del Cor-dero inmaculado, a la que Cristo «amó y se entregó por ella para santificarla», la unió consigo en pacto indisoluble e incesantemente la «alimenta y cuida»; a ella, libre de toda mancha, la quiso unida a sí y sumisa por el amor y la fidelidad, y, en fin, la enriqueció perpetuamente con bienes celestiales, para que comprendiéramos la caridad de Dios y de Cristo hacia nosotros, que supera toda ciencia. Sin embargo, mientras la Iglesia camina en esta tierra lejos del Señor, se considera como en destierro, buscando y saboreando las cosas de arriba, donde Cristo está sen-tado a la derecha de Dios, donde la vida de la Iglesia está escondida con Cristo en Dios hasta que aparezca con su Esposo en la gloria.”En la carta a los Efesios, san Pablo usa bellas imágenes para describir a la Iglesia. Por ejemplo, en el capítulo 5 compara la unión de Cristo y su Iglesia con el matrimonio cristiano, el amor entre el esposo y la esposa. A través de toda la carta describe a la Iglesia como el Cuerpo de Cristo. En el siglo XIX esta imagen se convirtió en la base de un movimiento que enfatizaba la noción de la Iglesia como un “cuerpo místico” unido a Cristo por vínculos jerárqui-cos, históricos, visibles que la convierten en continuación en el tiempo del misterio de Encarnación. El Papa Pio XII abrazó con gran entusiasmo esta imagen de la Iglesia como cuerpo místico de Cristo, preparando así el camino para la renovación que trajo el Concilio Vaticano II y su énfasis en la necesidad de todos los cristianos de responder la llamada universal a la santidad viviendo nuestra vocación en los asuntos ordinarios de la vida.Somos la Iglesia porque hemos sido bautizados. Cuanto más santos somos, cuanto más profundos son nuestros vínculos de comunión con Cristo, más somos Iglesia, porque es El quien hace a la Iglesia lo que es y porque su presencia hace posible que nosotros actuemos en el Espíritu y seamos cooperadores en la viña del Señor para la santificación del mundo.P.
