Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

October is Respect Life month. On this Respect Life Sunday, I offer excerpts of Pope Francis’ recent speech to the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations.

“The first reflection that I would like to share with you is this: today we are witnessing a paradoxical situation, which concerns the medical profession. On the one hand, we note — and we thank God for it — the advances made in medicine, thanks to the work of scientists who passionately and unsparingly dedicate themselves to the search for new cures. On the other hand, however, we also find the danger of a doctor loosing his own identity as a servant of life. Cultural disorientation has beset what seemed to be an unas-sailable sphere: yours, medicine!

Although, by their very nature, healthcare professions are at the service of life, they are sometimes induced to disregard life itself. Yet, as the Encyclical Caritas in Veritate reminds us: “Openness to life is at the centre of true development". There is no true develop-ment without this openness to life. "If personal and social sensitiv-ity towards the acceptance of a new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away. The ac-ceptance of life strengthens moral fiber and makes people capable of mutual help.” This paradoxical situation may be seen in the fact that, while persons are being accorded new rights — at times even presumed rights — life itself is not always protected as a primary value and primordial right of every human being…

The second point: in this context of contradiction, the Church makes an appeal to consciences…

A widespread mentality of the useful, the “culture of waste” that today enslaves the hearts and minds of so many, comes at a very high cost: it asks for the elimination of human beings, es-pecially if they are physically or socially weaker. Our response to this mentality is a decisive and unreserved “yes” to life. “The first right of the human person is his life. He has other goods and some are more precious, but this one is fundamental — the con-dition of all the others” Things have a price and can be sold, but people have a dignity; they are worth more than things and are above price. So often we find ourselves in situations where we see that what is valued the least is life. That is why concern for human life in its totality has become in recent years a real priority for the Church's Magisterium, especially for the most defenseless; i.e., the disabled, the sick, the newborn, children, the elderly, those whose lives are most defenseless.

In a frail human being, each one of us is invited to recognize the face of the Lord, who in his human flesh experienced the indif-ference and solitude to which we so often condemn the poorest of the poor, whether in developing countries or in wealthy societies. Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, and then just after birth, ex-perienced the world's rejection. And every elderly person… even if he is ill or at the end of his days, bears the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded, as the “culture of waste” suggests! They can-

not be thrown away! The third aspect is a mandate: be witnesses and diffusers of the “culture of life”. Your being Catholic entails a greater responsibility: first of all to yourselves, through a commitment consistent with your Christian vocation; and then to contemporary culture, by contribut-ing to recognizing the transcendent dimension of human life, the imprint of God's creative work, from the first moment of its con-ception. This is a task of the new evangelization that often requires going against the tide and paying for it personally. The Lord is also counting on you to spread the “gospel of life”.

Within this perspective, hospital departments of gynecology are privileged places of witness and evangelization, for wherever the Church becomes “the bearer of the presence of God”, there, too, she becomes the “instrument of the true humanization of man and the world”…

Dear friends and physicians, you are called to care for life in its initial stage; remind everyone, by word and deed, that this is sacred — at each phase and at every age — that it is always valuable. And not as a matter of faith — no, no — but of reason, as a matter of science! There is no human life more sacred than another, just as there is no human life qualitatively more significant than another. The credibility of a healthcare system is not measured solely by ef-ficiency, but above all by the attention and love given to the person, whose life is always sacred and inviolable.

Never fail to ask the Lord and the Virgin Mary for the strength to accomplish your work well and to bear witness courageously — courageously! Today courage is needed — to bear witness coura-geously to the “gospel of life”!”

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Octubre es el mes de respeto a la vida. En este domingo de respeto a la vida quiero compartir con Uds. el discurso del papa Francisco a la Federación Internacional de Asociaciones Médicas Católicas.

“La primera reflexión que desearía compartir con vosotros es ésta: nosotros asistimos hoy a una situación paradójica, que se refiere a la profesión médica. Por un lado constatamos —y damos gracias a Dios— los progresos de la medicina, gracias al trabajo de científicos que, con pasión y sin descanso, se dedican a la in-vestigación de los nuevos tratamientos. Por otro, sin embargo, registramos también el peligro de que el médico extravíe la pro-pia identidad de servidor de la vida. La desorientación cultural ha hecho mella también en lo que parecía un ámbito inatacable: el vuestro, ¡la medicina!

Aun estando por su naturaleza al servicio de la vida, las pro-fesiones sanitarias se ven inducidas a veces a no respetar la vida misma. En cambio, como nos recuerda la encíclica Caritas in Ver-itate, «la apertura a la vida está en el centro del verdadero desar-rollo». No hay verdadero desarrollo sin esta apertura a la vida. «Si se pierde la sensibilidad personal y social para acoger una nueva vida, también se marchitan otras formas de acogida provechosas para la vida social. La acogida de la vida forja las energías mo-rales y capacita para la ayuda recíproca». La situación paradójica se ve en el hecho de que, mientras se atribuyen a la persona nue-vos derechos, a veces incluso presuntos derechos, no siempre se tutela la vida como valor primario y derecho primordial de cada hombre. El fin último de la actuación médica sigue siendo siem-pre la defensa y la promoción de la vida.

El segundo punto: en este contexto contradictorio, la Iglesia hace un llamamiento a las conciencias…Una difundida mentalidad de lo útil, la «cultura del descarte», que hoy esclaviza los corazones y las inteligencias de muchos, tiene un altísimo coste: requiere eliminar seres humanos, sobre todo si son física o socialmente más débiles. Nuestra respuesta a esta mentalidad es un «sí» decidido y sin titubeos a la vida. «El primer derecho de una persona humana es su vida. Ella tiene otros bienes y algunos de ellos son más preciosos; pero aquél es el bien fun-damental, condición para todos los demás». Las cosas tienen un precio y se pueden vender, pero las personas tienen una dignidad, valen más que las cosas y no tienen precio. Muchas veces nos hallamos en situaciones donde vemos que lo que cuesta menos es la vida. Por esto la atención a la vida humana en su totalidad se ha convertido en los últimos años en una auténtica prioridad del Magisterio de la Iglesia, particularmente a la más indefensa, o sea, al discapacitado, al enfermo, al que va a nacer, al niño, al anciano, que es la vida más indefensa.

En el ser humano frágil cada uno de nosotros está invitado a reconocer el rostro del Señor, que en su carne humana experi-mentó la indiferencia y la soledad a la que a menudo condenamos a los más pobres, tanto en los países en vías de desarrollo como en las sociedades del bienestar. Cada niño no nacido, pero conde-

nado injustamente a ser abortado, tiene el rostro de Jesucristo, tiene el rostro del Señor, que antes aún de nacer, y después recién nacido, experimentó el rechazo del mundo. Y cada anciano —y he hablado del niño: vamos a los ancianos, ¡otro punto! Y cada anciano, aunque esté enfermo o al final de sus días, lleva en sí el rostro de Cristo. ¡No se pueden descartar, como nos propone la «cultura del descarte»! ¡No se pueden descartar!

El tercer aspecto es un mandato: sed testigos y difusores de esta «cultura de la vida». Vuestro ser católicos comporta una mayor re-sponsabilidad: ante todo hacia vosotros mismos, por el compromiso de coherencia con la vocación cristiana; y después hacia la cultura contemporánea, para contribuir a reconocer en la vida humana la dimensión trascendente, la impronta de la obra creadora de Dios, desde el primer instante de su concepción. Es éste un compromiso de nueva evangelización que requiere a menudo ir a contracorriente, pagando en persona. El Señor cuenta también con vosotros para di-fundir el «Evangelio de la vida».

En esta perspectiva los sectores hospitalarios de ginecología son lugares privilegiados de testimonio y de evangelización, porque allí donde la Iglesia se hace «medio de la presencia del Dios» viviente, se convierte al mismo tiempo en «instrumento de una verdadera hu-manización del hombre y del mundo»…

Queridos amigos médicos, vosotros que estáis llamados a ocuparos de la vida humana en su fase inicial, recordad a todos, con los hechos y con las palabras, que ésta es siempre sagrada, en todas sus fases y en cualquier edad, y que es siempre de cualidad. Y no por una cuestión de fe —no, no—, sino de razón; por una cuestión de cien-cia. No existe una vida humana más sagrada que otra, como no ex-iste una vida humana cualitativamente más significativa que otra. La credibilidad de un sistema sanitario no se mide sólo por la eficiencia, sino sobre todo por la atención y el amor hacia las personas, cuya vida siempre es sagrada e inviolable.

No descuidéis nunca orar al Señor y a la Virgen María para tener la fuerza de hacer bien vuestro trabajo y testimoniar con valor —¡con valor! Hoy se requiere valor—, testimoniar con valor el «Evangelio de la Vida».
