THE READING SKILL THAT I CHOSE

In class, we drew a painting to help us visualize the island better.

…and one showed the dark side of the island.

We then edited the painting on “picnik” to make it look better. I also did things that I couldn’t do by hand, like the contrast.

One painting was showing a happy side of the island when Simon described it…

Next time, I would like to make connections to the characters and the book by making a movie.

• One of the author’s purposes is the use of symbols. For example, the conch shell. It represents law & order.

it gets destroyed into hundreds of pieces and they turn to savages and kill each other. The conch is strong

and its colors are vibrant

It loses its colors, and then…

The boys are united and every one is following the rules

then, when the boys split up and fear of the beast confuses them

finally when piggy is killed and intelligence is destroyed.

Research on “Lord of the Flies”

The author of the book, William Golding, fought in world war 2 and he wrote the book after the war finished.

The theme of the book is quoted in the book by Golding. “The theme is an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature”

• Also as quoted in the book, “The whole book is symbolic in nature except the rescue in the end where adult life appears…”

Or

Metaphor

“The pile of guts was a black blob of flies…” To me it means that the sow’s guts were covered with flies, like this picture below.

Similes “…that buzzed like a saw.” To me, this means

this sound

“Ralph launched himself like a cat.” To me, it means that he jumped with his arms and legs opened out like this cat.

• The literary features helped me visualize what’s happening in the novel. It was easy to do that because there were lots of similes in “lord of the flies”.
