MINISTER LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR MAJOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENTTHE foundation stone for a major affordable housing development in Queens Cross, Glasgow, was laid by the Minister for Housing and Transport, Keith Brown MSP, earlier this week. Oban Drive, a development of 128 properties, is one of three Queens Cross Housing Association new build projects currently on site.

Association Chief Executive, Shona Stephen, welcomed the Minister to the area. Shona told the Re-Gen North: “We’re delighted that the Minister could visit today not only to lay the foundation stone for Oban Drive but to meet members of the local community. “Oban Drive represents a large investment in high-quality, affordable flats and houses by Queens Cross Housing Association. We’ve been planning this complex development for a number of years and are grateful to the Scottish Government for providing grants of £8.96 million through Glasgow City Council for the build. “Along with our other sites at Garscube Road and Murano Street, we’ll be providing more than 330 new homes for rent or for shared equity in the area over the next couple of years alongside new supported and sheltered accommodation. There has been immediate and very encouraging interest from the public for all three sites.”

Commenting on his visit to Queens Cross, Keith Brown MSP told our reporter: “Oban Drive is an excellent example of the industry matching local need and I am delighted to be involved in marking the start of this exciting development. “With 128 homes offering a mixture of

flats, houses and shared equity schemes, Queens Cross Housing Association is generating a range of much needed local housing options as well as supporting jobs and stimulating the local construction sector.”

The Minster also met with local community leaders as part of his visit. He discussed how the Association is working with them on the future of housing and community services for the

area. Association Chairman, John Gray, commented: “This is a time of growth and change for the Association and we’re all facing tougher times in relation to funding and the economy generally. Local people have a majority voice in our new governance structure and it’s by working with them that we’ll be able to shape a positive future for Queens Cross.” Director of McTaggart Construction, Gary Climson, is pleased to have started the Oban

Drive project. He told the Re-Gen North: “McTaggart Construction is delighted to be working in partnership with Queens Cross Housing Association to provide these much needed affordable homes. This is the third project in the Glasgow Joint Procurement Initiative and we have been working with the Queens Cross team to ensure best value and quality are delivered on this project. The Minister’s visit marked a key milestone for this development.”

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

CITY BUILDING RESCUES 30 UNEMPLOYED APPRENTICES FROM THE ECONOMIC SCRAPHEAPCITY Building has come to the rescue of 30 unemployed trainee apprentices over the past 24 months to help them complete their training after their original employers made them redundant. As one of Scotland’s largest construction companies, City Building has enabled these construction apprentices to continue their training, so that they will be able to make a positive contribution to the economy on completion of their

apprenticeship. City Building is Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction firm and its award-winning Queenslie Training Centre is among the most successful apprentice-training bases in Scotland. It has been a major player in the construction industry for almost 20 years. City Building delivers training to over 500 apprentices each year for such skills as painting and decorating, joinery, plumbing, electrical, roofing and construction operations.

Baillie Jim Todd, chair of City Building, said: “In these challenging economic conditions it is vital that apprentices are still able to learn their trade. We are in the fortunate position of being able to step in and help these unemployed apprentices complete their training. “An impressive 95 per cent of apprentices complete their training with us, compared to an industry average of 58 per cent. That is something we take enormous pride in.” He added: “The skills they learn with us during their training really set them on the right path from an early age. Apprenticeships teach important lifeskills and give young people a stake in society.” Michael Levack, Employers’ Secretary of The Scottish Building Apprenticeship and Training Council (SBATC) hailed the initiative. He said: “Maximizing apprenticeship opportunities for young people is crucial to ensuring industry has the workforce in place to meet demand over

the years ahead. “I am pleased to see City Building maintaining such a strong commitment to delivering apprenticeships in Glasgow. Their efforts to allow unemployed apprentices to complete their training will benefit industry by providing a continued supply of suitably skilled young workers to meet the industry’s future skills requirements. Long may their efforts continue.” City Building apprentice Stefan Brown, aged 20 from Possilpark who works as an apprentice joiner, said: “City Building have enabled me to complete my training which means I now have a far better chance of reaching my goal of becoming a joiner. “The skills I am now acquiring will set me up for the rest of my professional life. City Building has in effect given me and dozens of other apprentices a second chance. That’s something we are really grateful for.” City Building’s impressive average apprentice training completion rate of 95 per

cent is due to their award-winning training and wrap-around support. Recent awards include the Trades House Modern Apprentice

of the Year 2010, Johnston Leyland Young Decorator of the Year and the James Birnie Craft Excellence Apprentice of the Year.

Only a few days have passed since the schools went back and I can hear the collective sigh from thousands of parents. Uniforms and schoolbags have been purchased and shoes have been worn in ( don’t want them coming home with blisters). Time to get back to a normal routine. Dinner at dinner time and bed at bedtime. That time when you once again have to think of lunch boxes and what to put in them. I have come up with a few ideas that even the most fussy weans will love, not to mention the grown ups too. If the lunch box comes with a plastic drinks holder freeze the drink the night before to keep everything cool in the box until lunch time. Just remember not to fill it too much as ice expands. Smaller Tupperware boxes bowls and cups allow you to add cool stuff too. Try to pack your box with care after all you want your child to listen and learn not be high on a sugar rush. A small treat for playtime is fine though to keep them going until lunch.

SUMMER SOCCER SCHOOL IS A BIG HIT IN NORTH GLASGOWGIRLS and boys across North Glasgow were treated to a free week of soccer coaching during the school holidays thanks to North Glasgow Housing Association and Falkirk in the Community. Professional coaches led a four day training programme for school aged pupils from primary one to six. There were three training camps – at Keppoch Campus, Red Road Multi-Storey Flats and Springburn Academy. The training involved a full range of football

disciplines including skills development, individual technique, ball mastery, group games, small sides games, fun challenges and competitions. It wasn’t all football though and some other fun was added with special themed days including a crazy hair day, design a strip day and North Glasgow’s got talent day. In addition to football skills, all players attending the camps had to abide by ground rules including using appropriate language at the camp,

timekeeping and general behaviour. There was a superb response from boys and girls at all three venues and everyone who took part received a certificate and a Falkirk FC goodie bag. The coaches also selected a Player of the Week who received a special certificate to mark the achievement. Robert Tamburrini, Chief Executive of North Glasgow Housing Association who funded the programme said: “We supported the summer soccer school again this year as it provides young people across North Glasgow with the opportunity to not only learn basic football skills but also to get involved in physical activity during the school holidays” Falkirk in the Community also provide activities for nursery age children through their Pre School Programmes which aim to introduce fun fitness activities and healthy eating to young pre

school children with the intention of building a fit lifestyle throughout their childhood and into adulthood. Tom Elliott Head of Community Coaching at Falkirk FC said: “We were delighted to be able to organise and run football coaching camps for the boys and girls in the North Glasgow area. It’s been a great success and something that we hope to build on.”

WeightsAs we’ve said before, fitness does not have to involve expensive gym memberships or personal trainers and with the average gym membership costing £37 a month you’d be mad not to try getting fit the cheap way before parting with this kind of cash. First off, make your own weights. If bingo wings are weighing you down, quite literally, or you just want to tone your arms up a bit, have a look around your house for items heavy enough to use as dumb bells, tins of soup would be great for this. Using tins of soup or other household items on each arm for 15 minutes each day and you will notice significant changes to your arm but you have to keep it up every day without fail. Have you ever noticed after carrying a lot of shopping that your arms tend to shake afterwards? This technique will help with this and build your strength up at a steady pace making tasks like this seem like a doddle.

Tricep dips: Helps: Upper arms and legs

Another exercise technique is tricep dips, the only thing you need for this is a chair. The idea is to sit on the chair with your hands resting next to your thighs. Push up and bring your hips out with your bum just brushing the chair with your knees bent. Bend the elbows and lower body down staying close to the chair until elbows are at a 90 degrees angle. Push up and repeat. Straighten the legs for more intensity. This will help tone your arms and legs while also working on your stomach.

Single leg lift and squat- Helps: Tones legs, bum and stomach

Place hands behind your back and tip forward until parallel to the floor and flat, abs braces. Take your right leg out to the side, resting on tow. Squat down with the left leg while simultaneously lifting the right leg a few inches off the ground and out to the side, leg straight. Straighten and repeat before switching sides.

Oblique Abs-Helps: Arms, stomach, inner thighs

Sit with legs bent, back straight, arms extended straight out in front of you. Contract the abs and sweep right arm down and behind you in a half circle motion, leaning torso back a few inches. Sit back up and repeat on other side.

A balanced diet is crucial in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This is a statement I am sure many people are sick to the teeth of hearing but it’s true. A balanced diet is extremely important in fighting heart disease, strokes and cancer, it’s not just for when you notice the pounds piling on the pounds. Now this doesn’t mean you have to cut out all your favourite things, moderation is the key to maintaining a balanced diet. You can still have that biscuit or that favourite cake of yours but the trick is not to go overboard, like buying a tub of Jaffa cakes then eating them all, which is easily done (well for me anyway). Restrict yourself to one or two with tea at night. Out houses are filled with hidden foods that we snack on without even realising because usually we are distracted by the television or magazines or talking to people while we eat, so we are putting food in our without even realising it and possible when we aren’t even hungry. Research carried out by Psychologist Dr Brian Wansink of Cornwell University showed that people were falling into eating traps that they may have not realised before. His research found that people lost up to two pounds a month after making several simple changes within their home.

Dr Brian Wansink tips:Serve food on smaller plates.Move healthier types of food to eye level in your fridge and cupboard.When having something to eat, eat at the kitchen table or dining area instead of in front of the television. This way there are no distractions and you know exactly when and what you are eating.

£100,000 RIVERMAN APPEAL LAUNCHED IN GLASGOWThe world’s first practical life-saving charity and one of Scotland’s oldest charities, the Glasgow Humane Society celebrated its 221st birthday recently with the launch of a fundraising appeal in George Square, Glasgow. The Riverman Appeal aims to raise £100,000 from the public and local businesses to purchase a new patrol boat and support vehicle and new life-saving equipment to continue its vital work on the River Clyde and the city’s waterways. Launching the appeal, Glasgow’s Lord Provost Bob Winter said: “The Glasgow Humane Society is an important and well-loved society to which thousands owe their lives. We owe a big debt of gratitude to the Society’s officers and the volunteer lifeguards who patrol the River Clyde and our city’s waterways seven days a week to make them safer for all of us over the last ten years the Society has saved the lives of 201 people and prevented a further 611 from drowning. So it is with a great sense of pride and purpose that we launch the Riverman Appeal on the Society’s 221st birthday. I hope the people of Glasgow and the business community will respond generously to raise the £100,000 to replace and upgrade the Society’s life-saving equipment.” Supporting the Lord Provost at the launch was actress Blythe Duff, Detective Inspector Jackie Reid in STV’s Taggart and actor Tom Urie, Big Bob, Bob O’Hara, in the BBC River City drama - both programmes feature the city and the Clyde.. “This is our first-ever appeal to raise money. We need the £100,000 for much-needed new equipment so we can continue in the years ahead our life-saving work, search and recovery on the River Clyde.” Now in its third century, the Glasgow Humane Society has still a big role to play in making the city’s river and waterways safer and prevent water accidents. “We are an ever-present voluntary resource to the statutory emergency services and always on hand for the hundreds of sports and boat users on the Clyde each week and the many thousands who use the waterway walkways” The Glasgow Humane Society was set up in 1790 with a £200 legacy from local merchant James Coulter for the prevention of accidents, rescue and recovery of people on the Clyde and the city’s waterways. Then drownings in the Clyde were much more commonplace than today. Over the years the Society’s officers affectionately known as “the Riverman” - and lifeguard volunteers have saved thousands of lives. George Parsonage, the current Society officer, started at 14 years of age

saving lives on the Clyde with father Benjamin. He has saved over 1500 people and recovered over 500 bodies. His rescue work on the Clyde and other waterways has been nationally and internationally recognized. He is assisted in the work by assistant officer Antony Coia, appointed in 2006 and a team of over 30 volunteer lifeguards. Today the Society continues to patrol the city’s waterways daily and is active in preventing water accidents, through fencing, lifebelts, maintenance of lifebuoys, and its school and educational work. The Society’s officers undertake the gruesome task of recovering bodies, bringing some comfort to bereaved relatives The Society is also called on to assist at times of flooding. It was called into action during the Bearsden and Paisley Ferguslie Park floodings some years ago and the Glasgow East End floods of 2002. The Society works closely in partnership with the statutory agencies, Glasgow City Council, and other councils around Glasgow, Strathclyde Police, the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service and the Ambulance Service.

Everyone knows someone within their own community who helps others, be it by running errands for elderly neighbours, coaching youngsters in sports or a shop assistant who has a cheery disposition. of others. For example, a good neighbour, or someone working with a company or organisation whose extra efforts have made a real difference to the life of someone within their area.3) Building Stronger Communities The judges will be looking for individuals, teams, organisations from any sector who have worked consistently to promote community relations. Tell us especially how the work of your nominee(s) has made a difference, and how they achieved their results.4) Community Business of the YearThe judges will want to hear about commercial organisations which provide added value to the communities they serve. Do they support a local charity in some way, sponsor a football team, never fail to show up at community events? Don’t forget companies that have high standards when it comes to reducing their environmental impact, or who promote the green agenda to customers and the community.5) Engaging in the Community AwardThe winner will be an individual/group or project who organises an event which brings the community together. This could be a “Fun Day,” a Christmas Party for the Community, a Fund Raising event for the good of the Community etc.... In fact any event that has created a “Feel-Good” factor within the community.

6) Action in the CommunityKnow an individual, project or business that works to improve their community and make life better for residents living there? It could be a business or a particular fund has contributed to the community, or a person that has gone that extra mile to ensure that their communities voice is being heard and that action is taken on issues that affect them. The judges particularly want to hear about positive results that have been achieved.7) The Re-Gen “STAR” AwardThis Award is chosen by The Re-Gen Newspaper Group and will be awarded to either a company, project, organisation or individual who has in our opinion personified the feeling of Well-Being within the community. It will be down to the Directors of the Re-Gen to select the winner.8) Shining Star AwardThis is a very special award to commemorate someone either living or dead whose legacy has been to help others and change the community for the better. Sanjeev Kohli ‘chuffed’ to

Open Queens Cross Gala Day

‘STILL GAME’ star, Sanjeev Kohli, said he is ‘chuffed’ at being asked to open Queens Cross Housing Association’s Gala Day in Glasgow on Saturday, 27 August.

The comedian, writer and actor will be there to officially open the event which is free for local people. He said: “The people of Queen’s Cross are a very discerning bunch. If they ask you to open a gala day you must be doing something right.”

Helen Crawford, Community Development Manager, is the driving force behind the Day which is planned and organised by Association staff. She said: “The staff at Queens Cross put a huge amount of planning and effort in to making sure that the Gala Day is a fun day out for local people. We’re

delighted that Sanjeev has agreed to open the event as he’s such a busy man.“The Association has grown significantly in the past couple of years and we’re looking forward to welcoming even more residents to this special day in our calendar.”

The Gala Day will take place from 12 noon to 4pm on Saturday, 27 August, at St. Joseph’s Primary School, Raglan Street, Woodside. The programme include bands, fair rides, stalls, tombola, face painting, a barbeque and piper. It’s the biggest event that Queens Cross Housing Association organise every year and is supported by the Association’s charity, the Garscube Community Foundation.

CITY Building would like to thank May McCann, who this week celebrated 51 years working as a sewing machinist with Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi), for all her hard work and wishes her a happy retirement. May, who has been blind since she was a child, has enjoyed her many years working for RSBi, saying friendships are the reason she has worked so long. City Building’s Director of Operations Graham Paterson said: “During her time here, May has proved to be one of the real characters at RSBi. She is a model employee who produces excellent work, has a wonderful attitude and a first class attendance record.” We wish May all the best for the future. All the friends May has made during her long service at RSBi will certainly miss her cheery patter and her presence at her work-station but we’re sure they will keep in touch with their pal. RSBi is a unique organisation with unique resources. Specialising in manufacturing a wide range of furniture products, RSBi is also dedicated to ‘making a difference’ in the community. McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. MAKING a quick coffee in the morning is a necessity for most people on their way out to work but having a coffee, while raising money for charity may seem bizarre but it is in fact an event that the Re- Gen and MacMillan Cancer Support would love each and every one of our readers to get involved in and is an extremely worthy cause. MacMillan Cancer improves the lives of people living with cancer by offering practical, medical, emotional and financial support that is much needed when battling cancer. One in three people

in Britain will get cancer at some point in their life and MacMillan Cancer aims to reach every single person diagnosed with cancer and to be there for them at every stage of their cancer journey, no matter who they are, where they live or what type of cancer they have. at home, school or in your local community. The official day of the event is Friday 30th September but you can pick a day that suits you best. On the day of the event you could set up a donations box or charge small donations for cakes and coffee. It’s all about having fun while raising money for a good cause, so it doesn’t matter if you make £20 or £2,000, as they say ‘every penny counts’ and will greatly contribute to people living with cancer. 3. Scrap it- Furniture made from steel and aluminium can be sold for scrap, while plastic furniture can be melted down and reused.

4. Reupholster it- Give your upholstered furniture a makeover by sprucing it up with new fabrics or cushion covers. With a little nip and tuck, you will be able to get an entirely renewed piece of furniture

5. Re-use it- Why not reuse your old pieces of furniture by using parts to either make other things in your house. Removing nails from wood and reusing the scrap wood in projects around your house. Use old pieces of wood to create a new shelf or new legs for a table.

6. Give it to family and friends- Children recently moved out? or friends in need of furniture? If you have furniture cluttering your home, ask around if anyone you know is in need of a table or a bed. One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.

WE waste more energy in our day to day routines that affect the environment more than we realise. Even the simplest of things like brushing your teeth while the water runs or using your car everyday to travel to work is putting a great strain on the environment. -Car sharing. If you’re travelling to work in the city centre and you know other people that are also travelling to the same location, arrange to car share to cut down on carbon emissions .-When brushing your teeth in the morning, turn the tap off to save water when it isn’t in use.-Don’t overheat your home. Install a thermostat to maintain a temperature of 16 degrees in bedrooms and 19 degrees in other rooms. Lowering the temperature of your home by just one degrees could save you seven percent on your electricity bill.-Defrost your freezer. A 4mm coat of ice can double the consumption of electricity. -Switch off lights when you are not in a room. We all walk out a room and forget to turn the lights off at times but by turning off a light when you leave a room not only saves

the environment but it saves your electricity bills.-Keep original containers. From your washing liquid bottles to shower gel, save them and fill them with handy re-fills that are now widely available in the shops.-Buy washable nappies. A disposable nappy takes 300 years to disintegrate, with one baby getting through 5000 disposable nappies before they are toilet trained, washable nappies are a must for environmentally friendly living.-Cut down on printing. Print only when is necessary and try when possible to recycle paper by using both sides.-Switch to public transport. If you aren’t able to car share, then why not take the train instead.-Check your tyres. By maintaining the correct tyre pressure, you will reduce your fuel consumption greatly.-Switch to duel flush models. You can limit the amount of water you use by switching to a dual-flush model or make older models more efficient by fitting water-displacement devices. They are cheap and easy to fit!-Don’t ignore a leak. Dripping taps are a waste of water , always make sure your taps are turned off or any leaks are dealt with as quick as possible.

Washing Clothes in ColdWater Saves Money and EnergyONE of the easiest ways to live more efficiently and reduce greenhouse gas emissions is by washing your clothes in cold water. Learn why cold water laundry is environmentally friendly and how you can save money simply by not using hot water.Settings Will Save Money! Washing clothes in cold water can save you money without much effort on your part. It is as simple as changing settings on the washing machine from hot to cold using the smallest load setting possible for the amount of clothes being washed. As a result, clothes will still be clean but also money will be saved and greenhouse gas emissions reduced.Is washing in cold water as effective as using hot water? With cold water detergent, yes it is, although warm water can be necessary in some cases.

Manufacturers have designed these detergents specifically for cold water laundry. With extremely tough or oily strains, scrub problem areas by hand before washing. Another option is using warm water to wash the clothes. Laundry can be washed with warm water and still save you some money and energy although it is important to note that the warm setting is a mixture of hot and cold water, so hot water is still being produced. Grass stains, oil deep grease stains and difficult food stains may require a warm water wash cycle. If using the warm water setting, be sure to always rinse in cold water.

Environmental Benefits Cold water washing saves energy as well. It is not only beneficial for the individual but for the environment

and therefore for everybody as a whole. Also, because washing clothes is done by each individual several times a week, the impact of one person switching over to these settings is great. If many people use colder water for cleaning clothes, the environmental benefit is even more profound. According to the U.S Department of Energy, as much as 90% of the energy used to wash clothes in a conventional machine is used for heating the water. The heat used to create hot water can lead to five times as many greenhouse gas emissions than when clothes are washed in cold water. This means that making the small change of using cold water can greatly diminish the overall energy needs of doing laundry. An individual can reduce their monthly emissions by two-thirds of a kilogram from switching to cold water.

•Always use cold water setting for rinse cycle

Rows and rows of freshly laundered clothes and bedding hanging from clothes lines in back yards and gardens used to be a common sight. Nowadays it is all too easy to empty your washing machine and transfer it to your clothes dryer.

However, what most people don’t realise is the damage that running an electric clothes dryer has on the environment as well as the expensive running costs.According to Procter & Gamble Co, the average American family does about 300 loads of laundry per year and the average home clothes dryer has a carbon footprint of approximately 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of CO2 per load of laundry dried. It is easy to see the negative impact that running an electric clothes dryer has on the environment.

In addition to the environmental damage an electric clothes dryer causes it is also the single most expensive appliance in the home to operate. These power hungry appliances use an average of 5.7 kw per hour which is double the power required to operate an electric cooker.The biggest way to cut the environmental impact of cleaning clothes is to stop or reduce the number of times you use an electric clothes dryer and to start using an outdoor clothes line instead or a whirly pole.There are also other advantages

that result from using a clothes line to dry your clothes.Constantly drying your clothes in clothes dryer damages the fibres of the garments as well as causing them to shrink and fade. The heat generated in electric clothes dryer’s can also set stains whereas if the item is dried outside the bleaching effect of the sun can help to reduce the visibility of the stain. Plus clothes smell great when they have been dried in the open air.

Reducing food waste is a major issue. We throw away 8.3 million tonnes of food from our homes every year in the U.KMANY people think of food waste as a benign substance. It rots down in the landfill anyway, so no problem, right? Wrong! For food to compost properly, it needs light and air. In the landfill, it has neither. Instead, food devoid of light and air produces methane gas, which contributes to global warming. It is estimated that we throw away a third of the food we buy each week!Through poor portion control or buying too much fresh food that goes off before we use it we create a lot of waste. Follow these tips to help you reduce food waste, save money and protect the environment:

1. Write a list! Menu plan your meals for a week. Check the ingredients in your fridge and cupboards, then write a shopping list for just the extras you need.

2. Stick to the list! Take your list with you and stick to it when you’re in the store. Don’t be tempted by offers and don’t shop when you’re hungry — you’ll come back with more than you need.3. Keep a healthy fridge. Check that the seals on your fridge are good and check the fridge temperature too. Food needs to be stored between 1 and 5 degrees Celsius for maximum freshness and longevity.4. Don’t throw it away! Fruit that is just going soft can be made into smoothies or fruit pies. Vegetables that are starting to wilt can be made into soup.5. Use up your leftovers. Instead of scraping leftovers into the bin, why not use them for tomorrow’s ingredients? A bit of tuna could be added to pasta and made into a pasta bake. A tablespoon of cooked

vegetables can be the base for a crock pot meal.6. Rotate. When you buy new food from the store, bring all the older items in your cupboards and fridge to the front. Put the new food towards the back and you run less risk of finding something moldy at the back of your food stores!7. Serve small amounts. Serve small amounts of food with the understanding that everybody can come back for more once they’ve cleared their plate. This is especially helpful for children, who rarely estimate how much they can eat at once. Any leftovers can be cooled, stored in the fridge and used another day.8. Buy what you need. Buy loose fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packed and then you can buy exactly the right amount that you need. Choose meats and cheese

from a deli so that you can buy what you want.9. Freeze! If you only eat a small amount of bread, then freeze it when you get home and take out a few slices a couple of hours before you need them. For those nights that you are feeling too tired to cook, batch cook

foods so that you have meals ready without any fuss.10. Turn it into garden food. Some food waste is unavoidable, so why not set up a compost bin for fruit and vegetable peelings? In a few months you will end up with rich, valuable compost for your plants. If you have cooked food waste, then

a kitchen composter (bokashi bin) will do the trick. Just feed it with your scraps (you can even put fish and meat in it), sprinkle over a layer of special microbes and leave to ferment. The resulting product can be used on houseplants and in the garden.

Last week saw the publication of the latest unemployment figures. The information from the Office of National Statistics showed that in July 7.7% of those aged from 16 to 64 in the communities of Maryhill & Springburn were claiming Jobseekers Allowance, up from 7.4% in June with a further 117 people claiming the benefit. These figures are extremely worrying and make depressing reading for local residents in the communities of Maryhill and Springburn. Glasgow has the highest claimant count in Scotland and in July my constituency had the most JSA claimants in Scotland. It is now essential that the Scottish Government takes action to stem this rising tide of unemployment and to offer hope to people in the communities I represent, particularly to younger people who face a jobless

future. Scottish Labour has drawn up a five-point plan to tackle this issue and we are calling on the SNP to introduce these measures and to work with us to get people working again. I have called on the Scottish Government to take urgent action to tackle unemployment as the latest figures show that my constituency has the highest number of claimants of Jobseeker’s Allowance in Scotland. Every week I speak to people who are looking for work, they don’t want to be unemployed and many of them have qualifications and skills that could be put to good use in our communities. Particularly worrying is the number of young people who are leaving school without a job or training place. It is time that the Scottish Government put in place a real plan to tackle this problem. Labour’s five point plan,

if implemented, would make a real difference. We have asked the Scottish Government to work with us and to:1. Extend the Future Jobs Fund to the private sector2. Bring back funding for Project Scotland3. Create more apprenticeships 4. Introduce Plus One - support for small businesses to take on extra employee5. Introduce First Class – funding for vocational education in schools. I remember the 80’s and the effect unemployment had on our communities during Mrs Thatcher’s time. No one who shared that experience would want to see it happen again but that is now a real danger and one the Scottish Government must work hard to combat. On a happier note, can I congratulate

all the community groups in Maryhill and Springburn who have put so much effort into organising community gala days, fun days and open days over the summer? A lot of hard work goes in to making these events such a success and this year’s were particularly good and the sun shone at each and every one! In the last few weeks I have moved into my new constituency office. It is a privilege to have been re-elected to the Scottish Parliament, polling 42% of the vote in the Maryhill & Springburn and being returned as an MSP for Glasgow. The SNP have a majority of constituencies across our city and the Scotland. Alex Salmond has stressed the SNP don’t have a monopoly on wisdom and will work with anyone who wants to put the interests of Scotland first.I have been busy over the summer fighting for Glasgow. There are three ‘enterprise zones’ to be established in Scotland- areas where large businesses can set up bringing jobs and investment. The Scottish Government will give them an

exemption from business rates and there is a £16m pot of cash to make sure there is no loss of revenue to Councils. I am lobbying hard for Glasgow. North Glasgow makes most sense, maybe Hamiltonhill, Possil, Sighthill or Royston for instance. North Glasgow is the poorest part of our city and we are long overdue major regeneration. I have already met with John Swinney, the Finance Secretary and with a variety of agencies over the summer period, including the City Council, Glasgow Regeneration Agency and Glasgow Chambers of Commerce to push for this.I also found time to get married over the summer and I am

looking forward to this new term in the Scottish Parliament as a married man. Of course it will be a challenging few years with the ConDem UK Government increasing cuts to Scotland, cuts started under Labour. Only Independence for Scotland can free us from UK cuts and I look forward to our Independence referendum which will take place in the second half of the parliament. I recently visited several local groups such as North United Communities, Rosemount Lifelong Learning, Lifelink and Possil’s Ardoch Complex. I am always impressed at just how committed volunteers and staff are. My parliamentary surgeries are up

Over the Parliamentary recess, I have spent time talking with local firms about the problems they face in the currently desperate economic conditions. I visited Gaia Wind, a company employing fifty people in the manufacture and sale of mid-sized wind turbines, and heard of their difficulty in obtaining long-term finance for business expansion from the banks. This testimony paints the wider picture of what is happening in the country at the moment. With weak levels of demand, consumer spending depressed because of higher taxes, stagnant pay levels and fears over future unemployment, the biggest missing ingredient is confidence – confidence that Government is doing enough to rebalance the economy in favour of the new industries such as renewable energy, or the creative sector, in which Glasgow and Scotland can be global leaders, confidence that the banks will support viable firms through a period

of slow retail and manufacturing activity, and confidence among the electorate that the Chancellor is in touch with the real world where household debt is likely to rise and disposable incomes fall over the next four years. In the real world unemployment in the north-east of Glasgow is on the rise again. Among women, it has surged by 16% in the last year, and women now face the worst job prospects they have experienced for 23 years. Youth unemployment is rocketing back towards one million, or one in five in the UK. In some of the areas where riots took place in England this month, levels of youth unemployment are over one in three – as in Hackney, and Wolverhampton. In Hackney, child poverty rates stand at an astonishing 69%. Childcare costs are rising because of the cuts in Working Tax Credits. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has estimated that with the cuts in childcare support,

a family with children would have to be earning a fifth more to make up the shortfall caused by soaring childcare costs. People are working fewer hours than a year ago as employers juggle lay offs with saving jobs. All of this, plus higher VAT, and inflation surging at 4.4%, are hitting living standards exceptionally hard. The Chancellor has put great stall by increasing confidence in the financial markets, and points to falling yields on government debt. But this simply avoids the inconvenient truth for him that all countries issuing their own currency are experiencing a drop in bond yields. Japan had low yields for much of the 1990s – a decade in which economic stagnation took hold, and from which Japan is still struggling to fully recover. The real problem is on growth and jobs. The UK has embarked upon the third highest level of public spending cuts in the EU, but is now experiencing the second lowest growth over the last nine months, in which the economy grew at only a tenth of

the level it did under the last three quarters in which there was a Labour Government, and less than in the United States, where Osbornonomics have not been followed until now. So what are the solutions I will be seeking at Westminster on our return to Parliament this month? First, the Government must show far greater leadership in Europe in tackling the crippling growth and jobs crisis which affects us in our biggest export market. Weak growth in the Eurozone will spell weak growth for Britain. The Eurozone should heed the words of Christine Lagarde, the new Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, who wrote of the terrible effects in reduced growth of slamming on the brakes of fiscal consolidation too quickly. Second, George Osborne has to recognise that his gamble with jobs and living standards is failing, and change course to return our economy to growth. He could do so by cutting VAT to 17.5% this year and next to boost weak retail sales, and return to people the £400 on average he is raising from

family incomes this year. He could raise a proper tax on bank bonuses to raise £5bn this year and next to boost the construction sector and get 90,000 young people back to work. Third, he could back real investment in the renewables and creative sector to improve Glasgow’s long-term prospects. When China is investing $46bn per year in green energy, it is bad news for growth here for the Chancellor to limit public investment in the Green Investment Bank to a paltry £3bn, and refuse it the borrowing powers which could create thousands of new jobs in Scotland. He could support a wider Investment Bank to provide funding for the creative media, recently identified to the IPPR as one of Glasgow’s top areas for future growth. Fourth, the Government needs to lead an EU-wide plan for youth unemployment with urgency. The 1980s saw a lost generation have their futures ripped away from them by government indifference. A repeat in this decade would be disastrous.

AS a result of a previous article in the Re-Gen regarding metal thefts (issue 61) a member of the public contacted the police, referring to the article, and informed police of a suspected illegal Metal Processing site within the back garden of a Dwelling house in the East/North of our area. PC’s Imrie and Kerr (part of the Community Policing Team) attended and detained, interviewed and charged 4 males with theft. Subsequent enquiries have identified this cable as being owned by BT, and numerous other Charges will be preferred in conjunction with SEPA and Strathclyde Fire Service. The 4 accused are the most prominent individuals in Scotland for this type of crime. This shows the positive impact that can be achieved when our local media, local police and the community work together. Cannabis Cultivations, Causing Chaos in our Community!ALTHOUGH Strathclyde Police are having a major impact on the Organised Crime Groups in our communities the criminals continue to be a constant strain and poison on our society. Selling Controlled drugs within our communities has been ongoing for a long time. Whether it be Heroin, Cocaine, Ecstasy or Cannabis, the areas of most depravation are targeted by these Organised Crime Groups because they are seen as vulnerable and weak, allowing them to carry out their business. Families have been decimated by drug abuse, and the criminality that is associated with this has brought some communities to their knees. In recent years communities have been standing up against the drug dealers and assisting Strathclyde Police target not just the ‘tenner bag’ dealers but the big players who are making serious amounts of cash at the communities’ expense. There has been a growing trend of Cannabis Cultivations in Scotland since the reclassification of Cannabis from a B Class drug to a C Class drug in 2004. Cultivations can vary in size from a small residential flat to a large commercial premises, farms and factories. In the past 6 months there have been 19 Cannabis cultivations detected in the East and North of the city alone resulting in criminals going

to prison and also hitting Organised Crime Groups in the pocket, preventing monies made being channelled into further criminal activities such as prostitution and human trafficking. These cultivations are not harmless and pose a serious threat to the communities in which we live. They endanger not only you and your children’s wellbeing but your safety too. The processes involved in the cultivation of cannabis mean that there is a constant fire risk as hot lighting equipment, water, electricity, chemical and gases under pressure may all be present. It takes the large amounts of heat and light to harvest a crop and normal practice by those growing it is to by-pass power systems. This by-passing of electricity can be in the form of running the supply of electricity from street lights or from electricity boxes in our street. The criminals have no thought for the communities’ safety when doing this and leave live electricity cables exposed, sometimes in areas where children

frequent. A high proportion of the detections of Cannabis cultivations have come from members of our community contacting the police via Crimestoppers with information of suspicious activity. I would urge anyone reading this that if they suspect anyone of being involved in cannabis cultivation or suspect that a flat, house or building is being used for this then please report this to your local officers on 0141-532-3700 or alternatively to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. All information will be treated in the strictest confidence. (see Cannabis cultivation below) Signs to look to out for:-•Windows of property permanently covered from the inside•Visits to property at unusual times of the day or night•Overpowering smell of cannabis •Vent protruding through roof or window•Noise coming from premises i.e. buzzing, fans circulating •Cannabis by products such as bags of fertiliser gardening equipment

WILFUL FIRERAISING – SPRINGBURN, GLASGOW

Police are appealing for information after a number of cars were deliberately set on fire in Springburn, Glasgow, last Friday (19 August). Around 1.30am on Friday morning, police and emergency services attended a report of four parked cars on fire in Keppochhill Road, Springburn, Glasgow. A further two cars sustained heat damage. No one was injured.

Constable Luke Johansson, Baird Street Police Office, told the Re-Gen North: “The cars were all parked on the street and are individually owned, so it would appear that rather than people being specifically targeted, this was wanton vandalism. “Thankfully, no one was hurt in this incident but this was very dangerous as the front of the cars were well ablaze on the arrival of the fire service. It could have resulted in serious injury.

“It also causes considerable inconvenience to those involved not to mention the financial implications. “Officers are currently checking CCTV from the area and carrying out door to door enquiries to try and identify those responsible and I would also ask that anyone with information contact Baird Street Police Office on telephone number 0141 532 4100. “Details can also be passed in confidence to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

AT 8.45pm on the 13th August within Springburn park Glasgow a 14yr old boy was seriously assaulted by being struck on the nose with a Buckfast bottle which caused a laceration to his nose. A 15 yr old boy was arrested and reported for the assault.On the 14th of August at 6.30pm on Northgate Rd Glasgow an 8yr old male was approached by an unknown male youth who exposed himself to the victim causing alarm. The offending youth is described as about 13 yrs of age he had black hair and was wearing a red T shirt and dark blue tracksuit bottoms and black trainers. Police officers at Baird St are asking if anyone is able

to assist with identifying this youth or observed anything at this time please call Baird St on 0141 5324100.At 3.50pm on the 14th August police were called to a house on Lamont Rd Glasgow in respect of males burning copper. Police attended and observed 4 males within a rear garden cutting large copper cables with a stihl saw. Two 33 yr olds a 34 yr old and a 23 yr old males were interviewed and arrested and charged for theft by finding.At 5.00am on the 15th of August at Millersneuk Cres Glasgow a 71 yr old female had her bag and it’s contents valued at £267 stolen from within her home address. 3 possible suspects all wearing hoods were

seen in the local vicinity. The victims premises were insecure due to a malfunction of the door lock and the suspects entered via the unlocked door. If any residents have any further information of can assist with identifying the suspects please contact Baird St police office.Between 8.30pm on the 14th and 3.00pm on the 15th August at the football pitches on Broomfield Rd a steel container had the padlock cut off and a set of football goals valued at £800 were stolen. these are

people who are run of the mill n

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers

in an

effort to sell th

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all o

f a sudden are construed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

it comes to

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

City Building will fit new boilers and kitchens at Horizon HA’s properties in Possilpark, Glasgow.

CITY BUILDING WINS KITCHEN CONTRACT

SPRINGBURN construction firm City Building has won a £170,000 contract to install new kitchens and boilers in Horizon Housing Association properties across the west of Scotland.

The Livingston-based housing association is refitting 70 properties it owns in Denny, Giffnock and Possilpark as part of its planned maintenance programme.

City Building beat of stiff competition to win the contract following a competitive tendering process. Work will begin in late August 2011 and last for two months. It is expected it will take up to one week to complete each property. “High flyers” needed to raise money for cancer charity

ONE of the UK’s leading cancer charities is appealing for thrill seekers to take part in this year’s zipline challenge at X-Scape, Braehead on Sunday 11th September.

Macmillan Cancer Support is asking daredevils to zip from the very top of X-Scape Scotland to raise money for the charity. The “high flyers” with big hearts and nerves of steel will zip an exhilarating 650 feet from top of the 130ft high building.

Macmillan’s Glasgow Fundraising manager Rob Cartwright said: “We’re challenging Glaswegians to show their adventurous side and do something really special to help people affected by cancer”

“It will be an amazing and memorable experience, and a real rush. All the money raised will be used to support and improve the lives of local people affected by cancer.”

“Macmillan’s zipline places are already selling out fast so you will have to get in touch with us quickly if you want to join us for the ride of your life”.

All of the money raised from the zipline will go towards the funding of vital cancer services in Scotland. Macmillan provides medical, practical, financial and emotional support for cancer patients and their families.

To take part in this exciting and thrilling challenge you must be aged 16 or over and all participants are asked to pay a registration fee of £25 and to raise a minimum sponsorship of £100.

Mr Cartwright added, “For every £100 Macmillan spends on a face-to-face benefits adviser in our Glasgow Cancer Benefits Advice team, they will help Glaswegian cancer patients claim £1,400 in benefits they are entitled to which would otherwise go unclaimed, so the funds our zipliners raise really will change lives locally.”

MSP CALLS FOR BETTER PROMOTION OF FOOTBALL TO GET YOUNGSTERS LIVING ACTIVE LIVESTHE Scottish Football Association has held its second Council Debate at Hampden (Wed 17 Aug) which aims to bring together a wide range of opinions from across society on issues affecting the game in Scotland. Bob Doris, SNP MSP for Glasgow, has welcomed a renewed interest in promoting football to drive forward improvements in the nation’s health. The motion for debate was “To what

extent can football help drive a social and health revolution around the recommendation of 10,000 hours of football training for play development?” The Scottish FA strategic plan - Scotland United: A 2020 Vision - was the centre-point for discussion, focussing on how to improve working arrangements between local and national government and football organisations. Plans were

discussed to use the schools estates to widen access for youngsters and to strive towards the 10,000-hour benchmark for elite performance. The availability and cost of hiring sports venues and equipment

emerged as major hurdles for youngsters seeking to get involved. Bob Doris MSP is also the Deputy-Convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s Health & Sport committee. He said: “There is a great deal of scope for more joined up approach between the various bodies that represent the interests of Scottish football and it’s important that there is a coherent and coordinated approach to making representations to, and working with, the Scottish Government and local authorities.” Speaking after the council event, Scottish FA Chief Executive Stewart Regan, who chaired the discussion, said: “At the Scottish FA we recognise the role that football plays across all fields ranging from justice and health right through to the economy and education and this debate was about people from all sectors feeding into this discussion and finding out how we can further our cause.

Having spoken with every panel member afterwards there was broad consensus over not only over what we can achieve through the implementation of our performance strategy but also over the right way to move forward and that’s very positive for all of us that have been involved in the work to date.”“We have recently launched

our strategic plan, Scotland United: A 2020 Vision, with the ultimate aim of qualification for major championship finals across all national teams, while increasing participation in our national game at grassroots level but in order to achieve these ambitious objectives, it is vital that we engage more strategically

with Government, both at local and national level. The creation of close links with Members of the Scottish Parliament and Councillors will help us deal with issues ranging from football finances to facilities in a more co-ordinated and productive manner.”

ASHFIELD BATTLE BACK AT BEITH

STEVIE Rankin boss of Ashfield has every reason to be proud of his team following a hard fought victory at Beith last week-end. Stevie has been around the junior scene for longer than I care to remember but the team that he has built at Saracen Park must rank among one of the most determined he has built over the years. Aiming to stay in the Stagecoach Super League Premier division has been the club’s ambition this season but if

the display at Bellsdale Park Beith is anything to go by Ashfield should consolidate their top league status and more. Tony Chalmers opened the scoring for the “Field” after 15 minutes and were controlling the game but when Beith equalised on the hour mark, many felt that the elusive first win in the “Premier” was still in the melting pot. Manager Stevie Rankin though was not one of them and he knew that if they kept playing the way they were

then the chances would eventually come. Although Beith were pressing more and more the resolute defence of Ashfield stood firm and when (as Stevie had promised!!) the chance came Sean Fraser picked up the ball from 30yds out , flew past two static Beith defenders and unleashed a shot which found the net to begin the celebrations. Let’s hope Ashfield can build on this result and begin to climb the table. Speaking after the game

We have the pace up front and we are able to get behind defences but we must capitalise on the one-on-one situations we are creating. Our main objective is to stay in this league and once we are clear of injuries and get back to full strength I’m sure we can. This result should give us the confidence to build on today’s result”. First Division Perthshire had a tremendous 3-0 victory at home against Vale of Leven and finally in the Second Division Maryhill went to Forth Wanderers and captured all three point courtesy of a 1-0 win. So all four local teams won at the week-end something of a rarity but let’s not get carried away there is still a load of work to be done to restore the old pride which teams from this area had in abundance in days of old.

ARSENAL BC MAKE THE MAGNIFICENT SEVENARSENAL Boys Club under 19’s based in Milton in the North of the City have built a great reputation over their sixteen years in existence and little wonder as the trophies they have won speak for themselves. Manager Davie Cartwright and the lads recently won the Glasgow City Cup youth football tournament to make it a double following their triumph in the 2011 Rangers FC International Youth Football Tournament. The team have also won the 2010 Blackpool Easter Cup and succeeded once again in this year’s competition as well as gaining the 2011 Fair Play trophy at the seaside venue. Davie was delighted to report that Arsenal BC had also won the West Regional Cup last year and with securing the under 19’s 2010/2011 Glasgow and District Youth

Football League title the team has achieved a magnificent seven as far as trophies are concerned. Arsenal have also supplied players for both the regional and national team squads and in fact one of their former players was in the news during the summer when Dylan McGeogh who went to Celtic from the team then joined Rangers eventually went back to Celtic. The club constantly have senior scouts at their Sunday matches and a few of the Milton based lads have gone that step further in their football career. Arsenal BC have a fantastic record over the last three years in their trips to Blackpool with only one defeat during the period (and no Knock-Backs from the burds lol). Best wishes to the lads and continued success for the future.
