The Accord Centre which provides day care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for the Commonwealth Games car park and athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been fought every step of the way by the East Carers group, service users, families and friends. The closure of the Accord centre leaves the east end with just one day care facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the Community Health and Care Partnership which explained that the service offered at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands in contrasts to the Councils current view which is the close the Accord and not replace the service. This is part of a wider Council policy called Personalisation which has seen a round of large cuts to people’s personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson on Social Care said of the meeting; “It was great that the First Minister could join carers and service users from the East End at the Accord Centre and to give them his support in their fight against Glasgow City Council’s proposals to close the centre and cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the Commonwealth Games, the closure of the Accord leaves just one day centre for people with learning disabilities, and even this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel able to accept our invitation to meet today when he was already in Glasgow to discuss the Accord Centre, but the offer remains open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this issue as political football when they appear to have no real understanding of what needs to be done. ”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least concerned about anyone scoring political points but what we are concerned about is that a vulnerable group of people who deserve much better are being passed from pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even long term). What we don’t want is for a group who are dependent on stability to be messed about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will start going after those who don’t seem too bothered as to where the Accord service users are housed as long as they can say, “We did our bit for the Party” We are watching the outcome with interest so please get it sorted as soon as possible. PARKHEAD Cross is set to benefit from the latest round of funding awards from the Heritage Lottery Fund an-nounced this week. £10Million has been ear-marked for the regeneration of seven cities and town centres throughout Britain stretching from County Antrim in Northern Ireland to Margate in Kent. The awards are designed to bring tired old buildings back to

life and especially if they are of historical interest. Parkhead Cross falls right into this category and it has been described as “one of the most impressive pieces of turn of the century urban streetscape” and all the major buildings which form the cross were built between 1902 and 1914 and designed by such key archi-tectural firms as Honeyman, Keepie and MacIntosh and

Burnet. Major refurbishment work to the historic shop fronts and buildings are planned plus opportunities for local people to learn skills in traditional conservation and property maintenance. It’s high time the old place was done up as at the moment it is an eyesore, let’s hope the funding will totally transform the area into a place to be proud of.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

CRANHILL PRIMARY PUPILS GET GARDENING

East End Nursery Kids in Design CompetitionFOUR year olds from more than 58 nurseries in the east of Glasgow have taken part in a lunchbox design competition to raise awareness of happy healthy smiles. An array of inspiring designs were created by the children which all centred on the theme of looking after your mouth in order to keep your body healthy. The children were competing to have their design chosen to go on a lunchbox which will be given to every child in participating east end nurseries and who are starting P1 this year.

The winner was little Abbie McClure, age four, from Bridgeton Family Learning Centre, whose slogan ‘My carrot skips every day’ and creative design captured the imagination of the judges. Abbie attended a special ceremony at Bridgeton Health Centre, Children’s Dental Service with her class mates and children from other nurseries who took part in the scheme, as part of - national smile month – where all the children were presented with their lunchboxes with Abbie’s design on the cover by Mark Feinmann, Director, North-

East Sector, Glasgow City Community health Partnership. Debbie Connelly, Health Improvement Senior for Oral Health, said: “The lunchbox competition has been a tremendous success. It’s really made the children think about the importance or oral hygiene and the knock on effect for your whole body”. “This competition is just one

example of the work being undertaken in partnership with the Oral Health Action Team and local nurseries to promote oral health and healthy eating. “There are more than 58 nurseries in the east end which participate in our toothbrush scheme and it’s been a real delight to see them all get behind this fun initiative.”

THE children from Cranhill Primary, St Maria Goretti’s and Lamlash Nursery were all involved in planting wildflowers in the Cranhill Park area last week. Workers from the Land and Environmental Services led by Sandy Paterson ably assisted by Collett Carroll (Community Action Supervisor) had prepared a piece of ground within the park and the children were given wildflower plugs to plant. The children were very enthusiastic and set about laying out the plants with gusto keeping their fingers crossed that the flowers would take and the park would soon look its best with a wildflower meadow for everyone to admire. The idea behind the project is to both integrate schools and to improve the look of open spaces within the community.

FORMER Glasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took time to register their vote for him at the recent Scottish Parliamentary Election. Frank has served the area diligently for the past twelve years and was a tireless worker for his constituents. When elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999, he was appointed Deputy Minister for Local Government in the Scottish Executive and served in that position until 2000. He returned to office as Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care in May 2002. As Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport following the Scottish Parliamentary Election, 2003, he established theNational Theatre of Scotland, which has resulted in the award-winning play, Black Watch and other productions. In his capacity as Sports Minister, McAveety advocated using sports

investment as an opportunity for community regeneration and he oversaw Scotland’s largest ever investment in national sports infrastructure, being developed in the East End of Glasgow. He also conducted a successful campaign to bring the headquarters of Sportscotland, the national sports agency, to the East End of Glasgow. Space prohibits us to relate all his successes in the east end suffice to say Frank has told us he will continue to fight for what he believes in and although he is pondering his immediate future we don’t think he will be lost to the area as a politician. Frank was heavily involved during many of the major events which have been secured in the east end including the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the M74 Motorway Extension. The flamboyant Frank will certainly not hide away but bounce back with renewed vigour. Watch this space.

Pisces (20 Feb - 20 Mar)

You are in a mind-set of giving advice and not of one to listen, I would suggest that you take heed of the advice you would give to others as this is the answers to your own problems, those around you may say things that fill in the missing blanks of what is going on around you at this time.

The harvest moon on the 17th May is a great time for you as an earth sign, you will be drawn into nature, if you follow your instinct and take that walk you will let go of all the negatives of the past and embrace a fresh start as this is indeed time for your new year to begin and a new way of thinking.

The sun enters your sign on the 22nd of May and we are just going into a new moon phase and a new you, you seem to have released some of the demons from your past and a lighter much happier Gemini is surfacing. Time to blow away the cobwebs and start again.

Being so perfect is so exhausting trying to do everything yourself and not allowing others to help is futile. You cannot continue in this manner, you are not perfect admit it; Time now to change your way of thinking, time out is needed!

A time of new- adventures, new interest’s which may seem daunting at first, but it is putting you in the centre stage and before you know it you are playing the starring role and loving every minute of it. Change is good.

The new moon on the 17th May gives you a chance to re-evaluate your life; you are deciding what and who should stay and who should go. This is a good thing as you are de-cluttering for the rest of the years; some of you may hear from an old flame, resist the power of temptation by exploitation??

Mercury has been direct from the 23rd of April which helps you clarify communications around you, however, you seem to have taken on an air of authority on how you deal with people, a word of caution….Pride comes before a fall, oh wee gentle Libra where art thou!

As with all projects it takes time for them to come to fruition, just ask a farmer, your money situation will improve but it takes time and nurturing, i would also suggest you make a budget for the rest of the year and stick to it.

You have at last come to a place of peace and life is ticking along smoothly. You are a very friendly and chatty sign and because you are feeling so relaxed you may let slip one or two things that you should keep to yourself, be careful of who you tell your secrets to!

There seems to be a storm brewing as you feel a surge of emotions ready to surge forward and erupt like a volcano…. No, no, she has suppressed it again, you know it would be good for you to blow of all that steam as suppressing your feeling will make you ill, try to let go, scream if only a little.

After a few difficult weeks so seem to have turned a corner and you can see the sun shine once more. This is a great time for organising as Saturn the plant of structure puts order into both love and life. Make the most of this period and spend time in activities you enjoy.

Time to become a hamster and store some wealth away for leaner times. Your finances are good at the moment but communications and travel are not. Check the details on travel arrangement once then twice to ensure you have the correct information, Try to avoid making big plans around the 17th May, as this moon affects you concentration.

Hi everyone. Thank goodness all that election fever is over. Easter is over, the wedding is over and the schools are back to normal. Nothing to look forward to but the nights getting longer and the days getting warmer. It has it’s pitfalls though. Your garden needs mowing, weeded and generally overhauled. Despite the hard graft it is so much nicer looking out onto a spruce garden than an overgrown weed filled meadow. As it has been unusually warm these last few weeks it has been hard trying to fathom what to make for dinner. You take stuff out the freezer in the morning and by the time it comes to cook it you have gone right off the idea. So this week I have come up with a few dishes that are lovely in all weathers.. A gorgeous stir fry that takes minutes, even less if you buy prepared vegetables. I have also come up with a filling warm chicken salad. You can roast your own chicken or buy a cooked hot one from the supermarket. I prefer to roast my own as you get to use all the fantastic roasting juices into the dressing. I have also come up with a lovely old blast from the past dessert. One which the weans will absolutely love.

Sweet Chilli Stir-fry

3 skinned chicken breasts sliced into 1 inch piecesOR 2-3 quick fry steaks cut into 1 inch strips1 tsp grated ginger1 tsp crushed garlic½ a savoy cabbage shredded finely4 spring onions cut into ½ inch pieces2 carrots cut into ribbons with a peeler2 courgettes cut into ribbons with a peelerSmall pack of sugar snap peas or mange toutLarge handful of beans sproutsSmall can of horse chestnuts drainedHandful of roasted peanuts½ bottle of sweet chilli sauceLarge splash of soy sauce1 pack of egg noodles or rice noodles2 tbsp oil

Heat oil in a very large non stick frying pan or wok. Have the heat on high . Add the chicken or beef and fry off very quickly. Add the ginger and garlic. Add the vegetables and fry quickly moving them all the time to prevent sticking. Add the nuts and chestnuts. Add the noodles soy sauce and chilli sauce. Continue cooking for another minute to heat the noodles stirring continuously.

Ice cream sandwiches1 small tub of soft scoop vanilla ice cream1 small pack of digestive biscuitsStrawberry jamChocolate spread

Spread one biscuit with jam another with chocolate spread and spoon on some ice cream close to make a sandwich. You can use any flavour combinations you like. I love chocolate ice cream with lemon curd. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it hee hee.

FOLLOWING a meeting of the Baillieston Development Group this week, the Re-Gen discovered that major proposals are being discussed regarding numerous changes in the

Baillieston area. We are led to believe that the Police Station at the junction of Main Street and South Scott Street will finally be closed due to the dilapidated state of the old

Massive Changes Planned for Baillieston

building and the officers and staff will be relocated to the former Social Work Department in Buchanan Street. We understand that discussions are taking place to negotiate a lease for the property between the City Council and Strathclyde Police and we will keep our readers informed as to the outcome. Meanwhile there is a proposed Community HUB being discussed whereby the area adjacent to the Housing Office in the Main Street could be transformed into a one-stop-shop. This project would bring together facilities such as, childcare, employment and training services under one roof as well as providing an IT learning centre and community space. The existing Library could also be located within this area. These proposals are certainly not set in stone and suggestions are welcomed by us here at the Re-Gen so drop us a line or Email us on what you think should be incorporated within such a Hub. The information we gleaned from our sources is at present being studied as we don’t want to put forward things that could eventually never see the light of day. This is just a taster of what we hope is positive developments in Baillieston, let us hope they are for the betterment of the whole area.

A multi-storey block in the North of Glasgow was demol-ished early last Sunday morn-ing by a controlled explosion. It took 55 kg of explosives and just five seconds to reduce the 17-storey GHA high-rise to 12,000 tonnes of rubble. The early morning timing of the demolition at 15 Coll Place, Germiston, ensured disrup-tion to residents was kept to a minimum. It also reduced the time the nearby railway line was closed. The demolition was carried out under strictly controlled condi-tions which included evacuating 250 local residents who lived within the exclusion zone. GHA’s Executive Director of Development and Regeneration Alex McGuire said: “The demoli-tion of the last of the multi storeys at Coll Place is part of our wider plans, with our partners, to regenerate communities across the city. “We’d like to thank nearby residents for their patience and understanding while the demoli-tion was carried out.” Demolition contractors Safe-dem offered residents the choice of being put up in a hotel or to stay with family and friends. The GHA flats were part of the Glasgow skyline since 1967. They were part of three tower blocks

in Germiston. One block at 9 Coll Place was demolished in 1992 and the other block at 15 Forge Place came down in 2008. A decision was taken in Sep-tember 2008 following exten-sive consultation with the local

community and a fall in demand for the high-rise block at 15 Coll Place. The last of the residents moved out in November 2010 with the vast majority of tenants being re-housed locally within Germiston,

Royston, Blackhill and Provanmill either in one of GHA’s upgraded homes or in other partner social landlords’ new-build properties. The future use of the site will be discussed with Glasgow City Council in line with the city’s local

housing strategy. Safedem Managing Director William Sinclair said: “We’ve built up a successful relationship with

GHA over the past three years. During this time we’ve brought down 16 blocks throughout Glasgow.

Community Project Steers Young People Into EmploymentAN award winning community project based in the east end of Glasgow is working harder than ever to steer young people into employment.

This comes following a survey for the Prince’s Trust of more than 2,300 people aged 16-24, which suggested those from deprived backgrounds were three times more likely to say they will “end up on benefits”.

PEEK (Possibilities East End Kids) has been working with local children and young people for the past 10 years to try to broaden their horizons and close the “aspiration gap” between the rich and the poor.

The project delivers a range of skill building programmes including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Youth Achievement Award, Arts Award and a Young Volunteer Programme tailored to the needs of the individual.

Stacey Bradley, PEEK Youth Worker, said: “I was unemployed for a year before PEEK came along and encouraged me to get involved. PEEK offered me a volunteering opportunity and supported and encouraged me to complete a qualification in Learning Support

Needs. I was then lucky to gain the position of part-time Additional Needs Worker and seven years on and I am now a full-time Youth Worker with the project.”

Vicky Fox, 18-years-old, former participant and Young Volunteer, said: “When I left school I didn’t know what I wanted and I didn’t have much self confidence, but PEEK really opened my eyes to all the things I could do. I gained lots of opportunities through coming to the project like my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, First Aid Certificate and a 6 month Project Scotland Placement. This helped me to write a really good CV and I have now managed to get a job that I really like!”

PEEK currently offers support to more than 15 young volunteers aged 14-18 and also works with over 50 young people every week on other skill building programmes.

SHOPS in the Parkhead area are losing trade due to the amount of roadworks taking place in the area. Work which is taking place in conjunction with the prepara-tions for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games seems to be causing mayhem with the foot-fall at the Forge and other businesses in the East End. The problem is that the Dalmarnock Road area has been closed off for months now and this means that

the good people of Bridgeton and Dalmarnock among other areas are having to take major detours to reach the East End’s major shopping mall. Not only that, Springfield Road has had temporary traffic lights in operation for ages and motor-ists are now reluctant to venture along that stretch whilst outside Celtic Park the cones are laid out from the car park to Fielden Street. Gallowgate has also had its fair share of upheaval since

the announcement of the Games but the biggest upheaval has been the loss of custom from the major stores in Parkhead Forge with some showing footfall having been reduced by around 7,000 people on average. Time to start talks between the stores and those carrying out the neces-sary works to try and alleviate the problem. After all the Games are supposed to be bringing extra revenue into the East End not drive it down.

Scottish Parliament Election Results

LAST Friday morning around 5-00am, standing in the SECC surrounded by Candidates, Supporters and Well-Wishers of every political party taking part in the Scottish Parliamentary Elections, was almost surreal. The evening had started off in a jovial fashion with banter being given and taken by those eagerly anticipating the results but the mood soon changed as one by one the results filtered through from other constituencies as the Glasgow results were being counted. The first major indication that things on the political map were changing came with the announcement that Labour heavyweight Andy Kerr had lost his seat to SNP’s Linda Fabiani by almost 2,000 votes. You could basically feel the tension from the Labour officials as they checked and rechecked the way their piles of votes were mounting up in comparison to the threat from SNP. The SNP officials on the

other hand were celebrating as if it was New Year/Christmas and Birthday party time all rolled into one. Rumours started to abound with “Iain Gray has lost his seat” the favourite and “Jackie Baillie ousted by SNP” the other, but following a few enquiries these had proved unfounded and both had held their seats and continue to be MSP’s. Meanwhile East End lass, Christina McKelvie took the Hamilton/Larkhall/Stonehouse seat for SNP by beating another Labour big-gun Tom McCabe by 2213 votes. Yes shocks were certainly beginning to occur on election night 2011. The first announcement from Glasgow Returning Office, George Black saw yet another east end resident, Nicola Sturgeon, SNP’s Deputy Leader, defeat Labour hope, Stephen Curran and that then set the trend for the rest of the evening, (albeit a couple of Labour seats were held). Next was the Kelvin seat, which saw Sandra White defeat Pauline McNeil, ( both of whom were MSP’s prior to

the Election but only Sandra returns to Holyrood). The contest for Maryhill and Springburn, between Patricia Ferguson and Bob Doris saw Patricia triumph but thanks to the “List Seats”, Bob also makes it back to Parliament. John Mason (SNP), took the Shettleston seat from Frank McAveety ( Labour ), and the only scrap of comfort that Labour could take from the overall night was that Paul Martin was returned as MSP for Glasgow Provan. With the final tally of 69 seats the SNP have been given a clear mandate to govern the country for the next five years and let’s hope they get it right for the whole nation.

TAKE a look around you and you’ll notice that most successful community organisations each have a bank of volunteers to call on.The Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Credit Unions, Youth Clubs, etc...... all these organisations constantly call on the expertise of those who

have the experience to deal with the public yet seek no remuneration. In this day and age when it seems everyone is out for themselves the role of the Volunteer really comes to the fore. Volunteering is everywhere, in every part of the country, among people of all ages and from all backgrounds,

volunteering transforms lives. Whether the amount of time is small or large, one-off or ongoing, the same spirit unites what volunteers do: the desire to help other people and make a positive difference. There are approximately 20 million volunteers in Britain, doing everything from clearing canals to coaching football teams. Most volunteers say that they get a huge amount back from volunteering; the satisfaction of giving time constructively, sharing skills and experiences, the social buzz from a group working together, new skills learned and new experiences undertaken. In the current economic

climate we’ve seen a huge surge of people looking to volunteering to develop their CVs and enhance their employment prospects. The impact of volunteers bring a wide range of benefits to an organisation. The fact that they have chosen to be there for no monetary reward means that their work can have a huge impact on those who benefit from it. They can bring diversity and new or differing perspectives to the organisation. When they are well integrated into an organisation this can make a significant contribution to day-to-day work and longer term planning. Volunteers can be an organisation’s strongest advocates and its most honest critics. They are there because they care and harnessing this passion will bring tremendous benefits all round. Why not think about becoming

a volunteer and contact some of the companies that are featured on this page, they will be delighted to hear from you and it could mean that

your life experiences could really benefit a host of others who are crying out for someone just like you.

A Big Thank You From Tollcross.ON Friday 13th May the result of the Second Stage Transfer Ballot held in Carmyle, Tollcross, Lilybank and Newbank was announced.

A massive 72% of tenants voted in favour of transfer from GHA to Tollcross Housing Association.

Although the Ballot has now been completed the proposed date of transfer from GHA to Tollcross Housing Association is 27th June 2011.

Clive Douglas, Director at Tollcross, said

“We are delighted that so many tenants made the effort to cast their vote for transfer to Tollcross Housing Association. The Committee and Staff worked so hard in the run up to the Ballot to encourage tenants to vote ‘Yes’

These are really exciting times for the Association. We’ve just completed our first new build development in over 10 years at Corbett Street in Tollcross and the ballot announcement means that the Association will now treble in size, going from 700 units to over 2300.

There’s an enormous amount of work to be done now to ensure

that the transfer on the 27th June all goes smoothly”. We must thank everyone that voted, particularly those that voted ‘Yes’ for Tollcross.

A massive 51% of GHA Tenants voted in the Ballot, that’s 10% more than the turnout for the Scottish Election in the same area! The turnout show just exactly how important good housing is to the people in the East End.

The Association’s chairperson, Bill Dougan, sees this as a great opportunity for the East End of the city.

“This is fantastic news for the East

End!

It’s taken a long time to get this far but we are delighted that so many tenants have shown that they trust Tollcross Housing Association. There’s a lot of hard work ahead, but were looking forward to getting our sleeves rolled up and getting stuck in to deliver on the promises we made to Tenants. We hope that very quickly tenants will see the real benefits of local people in control of what happens to housing in their community”.

ST FRANCIS of Assisi (Baillieston) and St Pauls (Shettleston) school football teams made the journey over to Maryhill to contest the final of the Carruth Cup and what an exciting game it turned out to be. Having already faced each other in tight matches this season everyone knew this would be a close affair and so it proved to be with the first half remaining goal-less despite the end to end play. The enthusiasm

of the kids was a joy to watch as were some of the “Meaty” tackles that were being produced and the ref was forced to issue a couple of Yellow cards which seemed to calm the players down. With the large crowd of

parents and friends roaring them on the players were giving their all and more.

East End Teams battle it out in the West End

St Paul’s Shettleston Share the Trophy

St Francis of Assisi with the Carruth CupSt Paul’s open the scoring

Midway through the second half St Pauls deservedly took the lead with a fine shot from Brandon Hutchison as it looked like that would be the winner. St Francis’s were not to be outdone though and equalised with a bizarre goal which came about following a clearance by the excellent St Paul’s keeper. The ball was met around 30 yds out

and lobbed back (David Beckham style) over the despairing goalie’s head by Ross Ingles. The game then went into extra time but the teams still could not be separated and thankfully it didn’t go to penalties but common sense prevailed and both St Francis’s and St Paul’s were able to share the cup without the heartache of a penalty miss.

Here’s a list of simple things you can do immediately• Turn it off when not in use (lights, television, DVD player, Hi Fi, computer etc. etc. ...)• Turn down the central heating slightly (try just 1 to 2 degrees C). Just 1 degree will help reduce your heating bill by about 8%.• Turn down the water heating setting (just 2 degrees will make a significant saving)• Check the central heating timer setting - remember there is no point heating the house after you have left for work• Fill your dish washer and washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, electricity, and washing powder• Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need• Do your weekly shopping in a single trip• Hang out the washing to dry rather than tumble drying it The following is a list of items that may take an initial investment, but should pay for themselves over the course of 1-4 years through savings on your energy bills.• Fit energy saving light bulbs• Install thermostatic valves on your radiators• Insulate your hot water tank, your loft and your walls• Installing cavity wall installation• By installing 180mm thick loft insulation• Replace your old fridge / freezer (if it is over 15 years old), with a new one with energy efficiency rating of “A”• Replace your old boiler with a new energy efficient condensing boiler Travel less and travel more carbon footprint friendly.• Car share to work, or for the kids school run• Use the bus or a train rather than your car• For short journeys either walk or cycle• Try to reduce the number of flights you take• See if your employer will allow you to work from home one day a week• Next time you replace your car - check out diesel engines. As well as your primary carbon footprint, there is also a secondary footprint that you cause through your buying habits.• Don’t buy bottled water if your tap water is safe to drink• Buy local fruit and vegetables, or even try growing your own• Buy foods that are in season locally• Don’t buy fresh fruit and vegetables which are out of season, they may have been flown in• Reduce your consumption of meat• Buy Organic Foods• Don’t buy over packaged products• Recycle as much as possible

1: Start smallTo make a difference, you don’t have to start big. Remember, every effort counts, small or large. A small start is better than not at all, and it can help give you greater confidence to take bigger steps down the road. What it means to start small is to start with yourself. Look at the things that you own and use. Things around you that you have control over. These things could be in your home, in your workplace, at your hotel room during your holidays, in your car, etc. and as you become comfortable recycling your own things, you can expand your circle of influence to those around you, such as your immediate family, and then your relatives and friends.Recycling tips 2: Reduce and Reuse firstTo make a difference to the environment, you should first look towards reducing consumption, as it is actually the first and most effective step toward producing less waste (consuming less automatically produces less waste). However, there are times when consumption is necessary. In these cases, re-use as much as possible before recycling any remaining materials. Reusing products, where possible, is even better than recycling because the item does not need to be reprocessed before it can be used again. Finally, if you have to make the purchases, buy products that are made of recycled materials . And make sure you recycle the items when you don’t need them anymore. Look out for the recycling symbols on your products that tell you that they are made of recycled materials, or are designed for recycling. These things count!Recycling tips 3: Know what to recycleBefore you start on your recycling journey, the basic knowledge you need is to know what to recycle. There are many items in the house, office, school etc that can be recycled. The items range from paper, glass, metals like aluminium, plastic, electronic items and more! For

example, aluminium (used to make our coke cans) can be recycled over and over again, while not all types of plastics can be recycled. You need to look for the recycling symbols embedded at the bottom of most plastic bottles to be able to differentiate the type of plastic you have. In other words, before you start, you will need to know what to recycle and where to send them for recycling. Read more!Recycling tips 4: Green tips for the homeThe home is where you can find lots of things for recycling. Things are being purchased on a regular basis (eg. groceries and household consumables). Often these products comes with lots of packaging that end up immediately as waste, if no attempts are made to reduce, reuse and recycle them. As you become more and more familiar with the habit of recycling, innovate and find your own creative ways of reducing, reusing and recycling! Also make it an effort to share your tips with your family, remember, all efforts count. The more individuals that make it their individual responsibility to recycle and protect the earth, the better!Recycling tips 5: Green tips for the officeThe office is another place where you can expand your recycling efforts to. At the office, some materials such as paper can be used at alarming rates. At other offices, styrofoam cups are used on a daily basis for coffee and tea breaks, and at meetings. Imagine the amount of non-biodegradable waste these offices contribute to the incinerator and landfills on a daily basis! Scary!

Recycling Tips

Building a Sustainable Future

In 2007, we established a dedicated environmental unit to identify green issues and to deliver tangible results. Since then, City Building has reduced its carbon footprint (for gas and electric consumption) by 25% and further reductions are targeted. This has resulted in us winning a number of national “green” awards. We have also successfully achieved the ISO 14001 environmental standard and the FISP accreditation (Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme), in recognition of our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and maximising sustainability across the business. City Building operates one of Europe’s largest supported employment facilities at Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi), where over 50% of staff have a disability. Here, a range of green solutions have been implemented, such as introducing a wood fired boiler system, which is fuelled by off-cuts from the wood-related production processes. We have constructed a micro renewables centre at our Construction Skills Academy in Glasgow. This is a shop window for innovative

products using solar and wind power, ground and air source heat pump technologies, energy saving cladding systems, energy efficient boilers, water saving technologies and rain water harvesting systems. This Centre is the first of its kind in Central Scotland and will enable all organisations involved in construction to understand the need to proactively address green issues and, importantly, how to address and satisfy those needs. At City Building, sustainability is an integral part of our business activities, from office and transport functions to manufacturing, construction, project and maintenance work and training. However, the term “sustainability” not only relates to the products we manufacture and procure, but also to our staff development and our impact on society. For example, our Queenslie Training Centre offers a wide range of apprenticeship courses to upskill and

offer life employment opportunities to young people from across Glasgow. We also provide a range of training and life skills opportunities at City Building’s Construction Skills Academy, which offers nationally-recognised training programmes to assist people into employment, the majority of whom are far removed from the labour market. Through our training initiatives and apprenticeship schemes, we are providing skills to the workforce of tomorrow and generating true economic and sustainable benefits in our local communities and beyond. We are helping women to access the construction industry, as well as lone parents, ethnic minorities and young apprentices to develop their core and life skills and to make a positive contribution to the local and national economy.City Building – Building a Sustainable Future

City Building’s waste management champion, Billy Wilson, with Scotland’s first roll packer machine to compact waste and reduce landfill

CITY Building is one of Scotland’s largest construction companies. The company has an award-winning, holistic approach to environmental issues and takes a lead role in delivering sustainable solutions in construction, manufacturing, maintenance and training.

The competition which opens today is being run in conjunction with Learning and Teaching Scotland. Schools will be encouraged to run their own competitions, before submitting a final entry before 17th June. Schools will digitally upload their winning tartan online onto a special piece of software called the “tartan generator” to be considered with other schools’ entries from across Scotland. The winning tartan is likely to enjoy a high profile during Glasgow 2014 and is likely to be featured in specific branding, merchandise and ceremonies. Learning and Teaching Scotland will distribute the details of the competition to all schools across Scotland and encourage pupils of all ages to get involved. Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive John Scott said: “Designing the official

Glasgow 2014 tartan is a hugely exciting project and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to get Scottish schoolchildren to come up with the initial designs for the tartan. “We’re looking for designs that reflect the values of the Commonwealth Games movement, of Glasgow 2014 and, of course, Scotland.

We’re really looking forward to seeing the entries and ideas that are generated from the competition across the country.” The winning tartan from each school will be shortlisted and then judged by a panel before the chosen design is developed into the final tartan by Highland company Gaelic Themes.

THE Welfare Reform Bill committee is well and truly under way in Parliament and I have been heavily involved in the discussions due to my role as shadow minister for Disabled People. The changes to the benefits system that we have been scrutinising will have a huge impact across the country as well as for families and individuals in Glasgow East. A hot topic of debate has been the introduction of the Universal Credit - a new benefit that will combine some of the current means-tested benefits and tax

credits in to one single payment. Although the aim of this Government is to simplify the system – an objective which I agree is important – as always, the devil is in the detail, and I am clear that we must make sure that the proposals of Tory-led Government are subject to great scrutiny before they given the opportunity to be passed by Parliament. Last week the debate concentrated on the reform of Disability Living Allowance. The Government plan to replace DLA with a new Personal Independence

Payment in 2013/14. The Labour Party agree with the central principles around the reform of DLA, a benefit that has remained largely untouched since it was first introduced in 1992. Furthermore, public perceptions of disability have changed over time as has the legislation that impacts on disabled people, and so it is right that the benefit is reformed to reflect these changes. We need to look at what people can do not just what they cannot do. However, lots of concerns remain about the way the Tory-led Government are

going about this reform. For example, the public consultation was closed before the initial publication of the bill, while Labour do not support increasing the waiting time one can apply to PIP from 3-6 months, or ending automatic entitlement for the severely disabled. Last week I also attended the Hardest Hit rally in Westminster. The rally saw thousands of disabled people take to the streets to protest against the cumulative impact of Tory cuts on public and local authority services that disabled people rely

on to be able to live an independent life at the heart of society. It was a great event and there were many passionate speeches made. However the Tory Minister for Disabled People was noted by her absence, and the rally passed a unanimous vote of no confidence in her ability to reflect their views in Government. She now has much work to do to regain the confidence of Disabled People – particularly at a time of such sweeping changes.

I would like to take this opportunity thank Re-GEN readers for their support at the Scottish Parliamentary Election on 5th May when I was successfully returned as the Labour Member for the Glasgow Provan constituency. I appreciate that this is a difficult time for my Labour colleagues who were not returned in Glasgow. Frank McAveety, who is known to Parliamentary Patter readers, has made a significant contribution to the east end of Glasgow and the legacyof his work will continue to benefit local residents for many years to come. This is a period of humility and reflection for the Labour Party, however it also important that

during this time of reflection we also listen carefully to the electorate Whilst Alex Salmond goes through the process of appointing his new Cabinet Ministers he will be aware that I, and others, will continue to hold him to account and my Local Action Plan will include the issue of Lightburn Hospital. This hospital has provided a valuable service to the East End of Glasgow for many years and during the election campaign many residents raised fears about the proposal to close the hospital. I intend to do everything within my powers to ensure that this hospital remains open.

We must ensure that

unemployment does not continue to rise and I will be raising this issue, particularly with regard to the Commonwealth Games coming to the East End of Glasgow. We have to ensure that the local people have the same opportunities as everyone else when applying for jobs. It would be ironic if the Commonwealth Games came to the East End and the local people did not directly benefit, particularly in relation to employment opportunities. An area that has been providing job opportunities for the East End is the Fort Shopping Centre and I will be working closely with the owners of this development to ensure that they are encouraged to continue

development their business. Housing will be at the forefront of my Action Plan. I want to see the continuation of the good work carried out by many of the local community housing associations within my constituency. There are many challenges facing housing organisations, particularly with regard to derelict land in the Easterhouse area, and I will be working closely with housing representatives to improve conditions for local residents. Finally, it is important that constituents in my new area of Provan are able to have access to me. I am currently in the process of arranging my local surgeries, details of which will be available shortly. Over the next five

year I also intend holding regular street surgeries and coffee mornings throughout the constituency. A street surgery gives constituents the opportunity to meet with me in their own homes to discuss their concerns and constituents will be notified by letter when I intend to be in their area. In the meantime, if you have an enquiry please telephone my constituency office where a member of my staff will be happy to take your details - 0141 564 1364. You can also visit my constituency office at 604 Alexandra Parade, Glasgow, G31 3BS.

VERY GRATEFUL! Firstly, a huge THANK YOU to the residents of Glasgow Shettleston constituency. I am extremely grateful for your vote of confidence in me and the SNP on Thursday 5th May. And even if you yourself did not vote for me, I am still here to serve you for the next five years. In my acceptance speech at the SECC in the early

hours of Friday 6th, I said how many people had told me we had no chance of winning in this constituency. They thought it would be a miracle if I did win. Well, I believe in miracles! It was only when the ballot boxes were opened that we realised it was going to be a very close thing. And until we were told the result we did not know if the SNP or Labour

had won. Clearly it was a shock to Frank McAveety and Labour. As I did that Friday, I want to thank Frank for all his work over the last 12 years as an MSP, and I would also thank Margaret Curran for her work in the part of the constituency that was Baillieston. Over the last few years we have seen significant investment in our area.

The M74 completion is due very soon and we have the Commonwealth Games also bringing money and jobs. But we have to fight our corner and not see all the benefits slipping off to other areas. 5 out of 8 Glasgow MSPs are now SNP and we will work together for the very best for this City. Finally it was a great privilege to make the

affirmation at Holyrood on Wednesday 11th. I was immediately struck by how much more friendly and more efficient Holyrood is than Westminster. Staff call us by our first names and I had a desk and computer within hours of arriving. However, I will be grateful for your patience if it takes a few months to get a local office and staff in place!

Robbery - Blairlogie Street, GlasgowStrathclyde Police is appealing for information and witnesses after a Glasgow City Council worker was robbed on Blairlogie Street, Glasgow on Monday 16 May 2011. Around 1430 hours on Monday, the 44-year-old council worker was cutting the grass verge with an industrial strimmer, on Blairlogie Street near to the corner of Gartloch Road, when he was approached by two men who attempted to engage the man in conversation. A few moments later, the first suspect tried to take the strimmer from the council worker but it was attached to his body. The first suspect reached into his jacket, and thinking the suspect had a weapon, the worker unclipped the strimmer. The suspect then grabbed the strimmer and both suspects made off towards the community centre on Gartloch Road. The man was uninjured but has been left shaken by the incident.Description of suspects 1. The first suspect is described as white, with a local Scottish accent. He is aged around 24 years, approximately 5ft 8inches tall and has short, brown hair. At the time, he was wearing a light blue tracksuit, a cream bomber-style jacket and white trainers. 2. The second suspect is also described as white, with a local Scottish accent. He is aged around 18 years, approximately 5ft 5inches tall and has short, light brown hair. He was wearing a ¾ length dark jacket. Detective Constable Bernadette Gallagher from Shettleston Police Office said today:“I am sure that someone would have noticed two men on Gartloch Road carrying an orange and white industrial strimmer, and I would ask anyone with information or who saw these two men to contact Shettleston Police Office.“I would also ask that anyone who has been approached to buy an industrial strimmer to contact us, as this strimmer would be of little use to anyone with a domestic garden.
