STRATHCLYDE Police are genuinely concerned about the amount of Electricity Sub-Stations in the area which have been subjected to Housebreakings, (Police Talk for break-ins). The Sub-stations are having the padlocks, which keep them secure, removed and this then leads to a very serious situation, one which could result in horrific injury or death. The gates are left open and the workings are exposed leaving them open to access. These sub stations are very dangerous places due to the amount of electric current within them and to leave them open is not only criminal, it is also totally disregarding the safety of the public and animals. Little children are extremely curious and when confronted with an open access to one of these sub stations could take the opportunity to explore. If a Child (or indeed anyone), touches the live equipment it could be FATAL. When the Re-Gen got this story we decided to investigate more and took a trip around the area looking for sub stations. The first one we checked out was fine and no one had tampered with any of the locks etc..... but when we stopped at the second sub station in Mount Vernon’s WESTER ROAD situated in the Mount Vernon Playing Fields where hundreds of children play on a weekly basis and residents take their pets a walk around the park, HORROR the padlock was nowhere to be seen and the gate was very simple to open. Even I was a little hesitant of going inside the gate as the static electricity could give you a nasty shock without even touching the workings of the unit. So you can imagine what a toddler or domestic pet could be subjected to if venturing inside the gate. Strathclyde Police are extremely concerned as to what could transpire if someone decides to interfere with this equipment and Constable Bob Watson who is based at Shettleston Police Office is appealing to anyone who sees anything or anyone suspicious around one of these sub stations to contact the police on 0141 532 2000 immediately. The same applies if you witness any youngsters around the equipment as it is extremely dangerous. The padlocks on the sub stations have been interfered with in many areas throughout the east end including Easterhouse, Baillieston and Shettleston so please be aware of just how dangerous this can be and advise anyone you feel may be vunerable, to steer well clear of the danger and report it as soon as possible. Politicians Face the PublicLAST week at the Church of Nazarene in Burgher Street Parkhead “Playbusters” organised a “Hustings” which enabled the local residents to meet up with the politicians who are competing for the Glasgow Shettleston seat in next week’s Scottish Parliamentary Elections. Scottish Labour were represented by Frank McAveety, SNP by John Mason, Coalition against Cuts by Brian Smith,

Scottish Liberal Democrats by Paul McGarry and Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party by Scott Donald.Children from the area were very articulate as the posed their questions to the Holyrood Hopefuls and although certain people in the audience tried to turn it into a personal session the rest of the crowd were well aware and did not rise to the bait.

Irene Graham of “Save the Children” chaired the meeting and ensured each candidate had a similar amount of time to get his message over without “Hogging” the limelight. Thanks must go to Margaret Layden of Playbusters for once again organising something in the area that captured the public’s imagination.

GLASGOW HOUSE - building our futureAN exciting new house has been built by City Building to conform with many demands for reducing the impact on climate change – low carbon and a low cost home heating and lighting. So far the prototype is being tested in the grounds of City Building Construction Academy in Gorbals Bailie Catherine McMaster invited Dean of Guild to join her with members from Provanhall Housing Association to visit the apprentices and look at the two models of the Glasgow House on site. The success of the building apprentices was assured by the latest skills for construction required for working with new materials and design for interior pipe conduits and wall surfaces. Perhaps this aspect of handling new materials will be a sign for future design businesses in Scotland.“ look at the tiles made from recycled tyres “ these tiles are being tested as part of Roof tile finishes In the late17 Century, the Dean of Guild for the City of Glasgow was instructed by Lord Provost and Council to repair Provan Hall, the roof was badly damaged and threatened to destroy the Hall. The stairs which we see today inside the courtyard were built as part of this refurbishment. Today this responsibility for housing repairs lies with GHA and City Building. Today recycling Household waste and reducing heating bills is in everyone’s interests. The Glasgow house was built with new thermal modules blocks which will insulate and control humidity, quality of air, heat and maintaining lighting. Room space is balanced for family

style living. There has to be space for children and adults to grow together and enjoy good health and wellbeing. The wooden framed Glasgow House has adapted European standards ,design and materials to compare and contrast research work being done by Strathclyde University. Dean of Guild Graeme Kidd saw apprentices learning traditional ways of working as joiners, these basic skills are required for tomorrows building industry in this city – “ I was amazed at the range of work done by building academy and their contact with Malawi Scotland project brings our young people closer to being world citizens”Bailie McMaster was delighted to see the presentation of awards to apprentices. Community Planning funding had assisted 6 young people from Glasgow East to complete their training for next 2 years. Patricia Gallagher Director Provanhall

Housing association and Linda Cameron joined Bailie McMaster to see for themselves how much new materials and Technology was involved in creating the Glasgow House. There was great range of household furnishings designed and produced by award winning workers of Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries as well as pre-manufactured floor and roof cassettes. Glasgow City Building and GHA have worked together to tackle fuel poverty. The display houses are fully furnished beds, chairs and wardrobes and cupboards fitted the interiors of each room for a family household. Here is a partnership GHA,City Building and PRP Architects working to serve the needs of residents in Glasgow for the 21 Century

Springboig “Cares” for the ElderlyCLIENTS in Springboig Care Home in Larchgrove Road were delighted to welcome local MP Margaret Curran and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Paul Martin to the home to unveil a mural painted and designed by the pupils of St Timothy’s Primary School in Shettleston. The friendly atmosphere that abounded as the visitors walked in was tremendous as the lounge reverberated with “Auld Scots Songs” as the clients relaxed in the great surroundings at Springboig. The way the staff made us welcome was excellent (especially as we read about abuse at times in certain care homes), and the way they look after the clients is second to none. From the cleaners to the management everyone at Springboig Care Home is geared to making sure their clients spend their twilight days in comfort and happiness and this is certainly working. The excellently designed Home would put many top class hotels to shame and situated in the leafy suburb of Larchgrove means that the tranquil peace ensures that families who select Springboig for their loved ones can have no doubt they will be able to relax in the knowledge that they are receiving the best of care. As the Springboig Care Home has

a constant affinity with the local community it is no surprise that the children from St Timothy’s School were involved in creating the latest mural for the wall. Once it was completed the kids along with the Headmaster were invited along to the home to share in the unveiling by MSP Margaret Curran ably assisted by Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Paul Martin. Following the formalities everyone was invited to partake of the excellent buffet and then enjoy the

“Scottish Karaoke” held for the clients in the large lounge within the premises.“Yes a great time was had by all.”

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

My Time at the Re-gen

It’s that time of year when the University West of Scotland have been sending their third year journalism students out into the big bad world for a few weeks to experience what working in a real newspaper is all about. I chose “The Paper Money can’t Buy”, the Re-Gen and I have been really surprised with what I found,( in a good way of course). Here I met George, Karen and Paula, three of the most down to earth people I’ve ever met in my 22 years living in the East End and I can honestly say, that this has been a real experience. During my time here I met and interviewed election runners Frank Mc Aveety and John Mason to find out what they proposed to do for the people in the East End. I also met Margaret Curran, MP for Glasgow East and Paul Martin (prospective

Parliamentary Candidate for Glasgow Provan), at Springboig Care Home where they unveiled a mural by the children at St Timothy’s, as well as partaking in a lunch buffet with the kids and the MP, (It’s a hard life). George and I also cruised around in the car listening to some good tunes while trying to scoop out some stories around the area. This experience has given me a great insight into the community that I have lived in for years. I have genuinely enjoyed coming into the Re-gen office everyday because they are like a close family that you can’t help but want to be a part of. Thank you to George, Karen and Paula for taking me under their wing and making me feel very welcome. Amanda Poliri(3rd Year Journalism Student)

Missing Grey Parrot- Reward if found

like to see him home safely.Billy is grey with whitish facial features and is

described as being very timid. If you happen to see Billy, and are near

to contact the police or the RSPCA as he has been reported to both. The family is offering a

cash reward for his safe return.

Pisces (20 Feb - 20 Mar)

The sun seems to have warmed the cockles of your heart and your step is as light as the spring due, Venus in Taurus has brought love to the fore front of your mind as you enjoy this time of passion and adventure indoors and out, remember the friendship too as lust has a way of fading away.

With the sun in your sign and mercury now moving out you seem to get your projects up and running at last, there are a few surprises on the horizon, so look at the details and if you like what you see, then go get it!.

Every the great people pleaser you have just about peeped out your own flow of enthusiasm, time to recuperate your energy and get prepared for the sun moving into your own sign as it will be busy, busy, busy in oh so many ways.

Your finances have took a bit of a battering lately but there are new opportunities at work which will help build the coffers and friends come up with money making ideas to, so if you are prepared to do a little extra you will reap the rewards.!

As a natural leader you do not like being caged in by people who try to control you and you have been putting a “nice” face on for to lion, time to let the lion loose and the rest of us better watch out. There is an air of optimism around you now.

All the hard work you did last year, laying the foundations on which to build a good strong work force on is about to pay off, as you are now recognised for all of your past efforts and lady luck shines your way. Try to keep positive and see the winning line.

Your load is heavy and yet you are taking on more responsibilities than you can cope with. Time to wake up and start delegating as you do it very well. Try not to get caught up in other peoples domestics.

As with all endings there are new beginnings, new ideas, projects and family matters to sort out, and you are in the right frame of mind to do it, just remember us mere mortals as you build your ladder of success!

There are some positive prospects coming to you through a work project! Remember to put some away for a rainy day, travel is very much on your mind and some of that cash will be spent on a holiday.

There is a shift of energy in the home front and domestic bliss is yours over the next few week, the difficulties are being left behind as you push forward with focus and determination to succeed.

You are like a pressure cooker ready to let of steam, but in a good way, times are changing as you begin to let go a little, letting go of the need to be in control, alleluia, about time too, you are also feeling very creative at this time so allow your creativities to come to the fore.

That mind of your is causing you to be a little too much in the land of dreams and fairy tales, it is time to see the bigger picture and to realise that the decisions you are making now will affect you for quite some time! Try to focus on the real world and your dreams for the future will begin to grow.

Trying to find new and imaginative ways to amuse and occupy a toddler without breaking the bank is exhausting. Taking him swimming today which is always a winner. The only thing about that is you are starving and knackered afterwards. I am going to put a casserole in the oven on the timer to cook whilst we are out. I love doing this as you come in to a warm kitchen that smells fantastic. Because you did all the preparation in advance you feel as though it has been done for you. And since you either washed up or loaded the dishwasher the place doesn’t look like a war zone either. I also peel and quarter my totties and bring to the boil before turning them off to sit on the hob until we get back. They semi cook and you only have to re-boil them for 5 min to finish them off. Just enough time to unpack the wet cossies and towels.

Beef and Tomato Hotpot1-2lb of stewing steakPlain seasoned flour for dusting.2 onions sliced2 carrots peeled and chopped into 1 inch pieces1 small turnip chopped into 1 inch pieces2 cans of plum tomatoes1 clove of garlic crushed1 beef stock cube.Salt and pepper1tsp of sugar.

Add the garlic, carrots, turnip and onions to the pan and using a wooden spoon scrape of the stuck pieces on bottom. Add the tomatoes, meat and sugar. Make up the stock cube with a pint of water and add this to pan. Bring to the boil, check seasoning and cover with a tight lid. Put into a moderate oven 170c and set timer to switch oven off in 2 hours.

Serve with the mashed totties to soak up all the rich gravy.

Caramel Apple Betty1 sweet pastry case ready made or make your own using 170g plain flour 170g self raising flour 120g caster sugar and 240g of margarine.4 bramley apples peeled cored and sliced1 can of nestle caramel1 Packet of crumble mix or make your own using 180g of plain flour rubbed through with 90g of butter sprinkled with 45g of sugar.

Add a squeeze of lemon to the apple to stop it browning and discolouring. Pour the apple into the pastry case and pour over remaining caramel. Local Kids Celebrate the Wedding

Uproar over Party DisparityLAST Friday local residents in the David Street area of the Gallowgate held a street part to celebrate the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. Organised by the Gallowgate Tenants Group who received money from “Awards for All” the day included a buffet and bouncy castles with a visit from local councillor Alison Thewliss who took along her young son. Meanwhile only a few hundred yards away in Millerston Street there was uproar as police twice moved a residents street party and told the organisers that they had no permission to hold a party in the area. Local residents in the Dennistoun area had collected cash to enable the kids of the Dennistoun/Bluevale areas to celebrate the Royal Wedding with the rest of the nation. Bouncy Castles, Buffets and Entertainment had all been laid on but according to the organisers the police objected to them putting tables out on Gateside Street (although it is a cul-de-sac and there were safety fences and numerous adults supervising). The organisers were really angry at being moved into a dusty, barren area just off Millerston Street which meant that the kids, although enjoying themselves immensely, ended up in a mess as the dirt from the dried in earth stuck to their clothing, (it could have been worse though as it could have rained and the mud would have been horrendous). Locals believe that the party had been obstructed because they used the Bristol Bar address, as a focal point for the kids to pick up the gifts that the organisers had purchased to commemorate the Royal Wedding. “We were asked for around £2000 to put on a street party for the community” said one of the residents who refused to be named, “Yet just down the road they are

getting funding and all the help they can get to organise theirs”. “We are proud to be British and to celebrate our future King William’s wedding was something that all the community was looking forward to, unfortunately someone in authority decided that the kids in Dennistoun shouldn’t be allowed the same leeway as other kids in the city”. Further along the Gallowgate there was an attempt to organise a “Seville Re-Visited” party with sand and beach balls. Unfortunately it seems most of those who were due to attend were caught up watching the Royal Wedding on TV. As the Re-Gen photographer went along to take pics of the event all that signified a party was a small pile of sand at the side of the road and the sound of “The Fields of Athenry” coming from the nearby “Timland” shop but no revellers, maybe they had seen Pippa Middleton on the telly and decided that was better.

Another New Company In East EndCAMBUSLANG Business Park was the venue recently for the official opening of the brand new BSS Mailing, Digital Print and Response Handling Facility. This custom built facility already employs around 60 people from this area and beyond and MP Margaret Curran took great delight in opening the premises and enjoyed a guided tour around the modern facility. BSS are heavily involved in response handling for many major companies and it was extremely interesting to witness just what the company can do although due to the Data Protection Act we cannot reveal the extent of their involvement, suffice to say if anyone is thinking of sourcing Response Handling, Mailing or Digital Print, then BSS certainly come highly recommended. Chief Executive Peter Calderbank told the Re-Gen, “We are delighted to have re-located into the East End

of Glasgow and look forward to becoming part of the success story of the area. We have an ongoing commitment to invest in the facility and to grow in the future”. Margaret Curran MP welcomed the company into the East End and praised the hard-work and dedication of the people of

the area prior to unveiling the commemorative plaque and declaring the BSS offices open. She was then accompanied around the building and was very impressed to see the operation working from initial contact to the dispatched product.

Asda Foundation Helps Drop-in CentreTHE Giant Asda Foundation, Charity wing of Asda stores throughout the country, recently stepped in to the delight of “With Kids” an East end based project with a donation to the tune of £13,855. This very generous donation enabled “With Kids” to transform a derelict building in Annfield Place into a Drop-In centre for vulnerable children and families in the East end. The facility offers a cafe/meeting place with access to the internet, sewing machines, specialised play therapy rooms and informal meeting rooms. Angela Beattie from “With Kids” told the Re-Gen, “we are highly grateful to the Asda Foundation for this very generous donation.

Speaking as a trustee of the Asda Foundation, Annmarie Rocks, the Events Co-ordinator at the Asda Superstore in Parkhead told our reporter, “We are delighted to give something back to the local community that supports us and we are only too happy to lend a hand to “With Kids”. They are such a vital part of the local community in the east end and our donation will make a significant difference to their work.” The Asda Foundation is a charitable trust which was set up

in 1988 to support local good causes chosen by their colleagues and is funded by profits from the mid-week national lottery. For more details of the Asda Foundation log onto www.asda.com/asda-foundation

with the gap betweenrich and poor. John’s other interests include hill-walking, camping, and supporting Clyde. He is also a member of Easterhouse Baptist Church.John says, “The SNP has delivered 84 of its 94 promises made in 2007 – not bad for

Scottish Parliament elections

Scottish Parliamentary ElectionsTHIS Thursday there is a major event happening throughout Scotland and it is vital everyone eligible to vote does so as our future is at stake. In this area we have four different parties all clamouring for your vote but barring a miracle it will be either Scottish Labour and SNP who will emerge the triumphant party with the Scottish Conservative and Unionists and Scottish Liberals as also rans. Glasgow Shettleston and Glasgow Provan are the two seats up for grabs in this election and on one side we have Paul Martin and Frank McAveety representing Scottish Labour with Anne McLaughlin and John Mason standing for the SNP. Both the Labour candidates have seen boundary changes which mean that they are hoping to represent constituents that have never voted for them before in certain areas whilst Anne McLaughlin is hoping to be returned as a “List” MSP with John Mason standing solely as a candidate for Glasgow Shettleston as he has opted not to seek a seat through

the “List” system. The pity about elections is that it is the leaders who are highlighted in the television and through the media and that can create a false picture as some people don’t like the leadership but like the local candidate. The responses we’ve heard range from “He’s far too Smarmy”, on one hand, to “He has absolutely

no Personality” on the other. Well we all saw what happened when the last leader’s debates took place on television and who emerged as the most articulate....Yes.... Nick Clegg and then we watched as he went on an ego trip with David Cameron in what is affectionately called a “CON-DEM” coalition government,

one which has us all quaking in our shoes as they prepare to introduce more cuts than a council worker’s strimmer. We are lucky in this area that all our candidates have served in Government and have the experience, it is not up to us to tell you who to vote for that is something you must decide on yourselves. Scottish voters will go to the polls for the first time since 2007, when the SNP emerged as the largest party and formed a minority government.Like four years ago, 129 MSPs will be elected to Holyrood - 73 through the constituency-based first-past-the-post system and 56 through a separate party list system in eight electoral regions. The shape of the parliamentary map is significantly different this

time. The boundaries of more than half of the constituencies have been re-drawn since 2007 and one in six voters are now in a different seat than they were last time around.Council elections due this year have been deferred until 2012 to avoid the voter confusion experienced in 2007 and give local government elections more prominence.

“This election I am asking you to make a clear choice between hope and fear.

If politicians can’t offer hope for the future, what is the point in them being there?

Other candidates in this election will tell you everything we can’t, we mustn’t, we shouldn’t do.

I say “actually we can, we must, we should and what’s more we WILL do everything we can to make Glasgow a better city to live in and Scotland a better country to grow up in”.

From the Sure Start Fund which will make sure we intervene to improve a child’s life chances before they encounter difficulties rather than after, to the ambitious plan of the First Minister Alex Salmond to turn Scotland into Europe’s green energy powerhouse creating thousands of much needed jobs, we are ready with long term

plans to regenerate our country and protect our most precious resource, our people.

Life can be better and under a re-elected SNP government it will be. Will you be part of it?

The following people live in the constituency of Glasgow Provan and they have all publicly endorsed me. They know me as someone who, when elected as an MSP for the last two years, fought for your rights at all

times:

Greater Easterhouse – Nancy Ross, Tam Burrows, Kenny Murray, Peter McMahon, Eoin McIntyre; Cranhill – Chris Mercer, Elaine Paterson; Dennistoun – Mairi Henderson, Thomas Walker, David Livey; Springboig &

Interesting Facts

The Count for the two constituencies takes place in the SECC.Before lodging nomination papers, candidates only need a witness signature.

Each Candidate pays a £500 deposit which is returned if they receive five per cent or more of valid votes.

Declared bankrupts cannot contest an election.Legislation dictates that the public cannot attend the count.

In Glasgow only the successful candidate and the runner-up will deliver speeches. In Glasgow there are 1437 Ballot Boxes to open. These will be delivered to the SECC

in vans after polls close at 10.00pm

attended local hustings and heard the candidates put forward their plans for the next four years and if we were crazy enough to believe all we heard then Scotland would be Utopia in a couple of months if certain candidates were elected but hey, that’s all part of the political game is it not. We are certain though that each candidate means what they say, it is only when they are subjected to the “WHIP” in Parliament that their

minds can be changed as the “Gaffer” tells them how to vote on crucial issues. Which candidate can stand up for his or her beliefs and not be swayed by pressure from the “Bosses”? Which candidate can you count on to look after you and your community’s interests? At the end of the day it’s you who will choose. One thing we urge you all though is, to

ensure you make use of your vote, because if the results from the last General Election are anything to go by, we will all be moaning about the Westminster Government but just how many who are moaning didn’t vote in that election? Make sure You Vote In This One.

Paul Martin for Glasgow Provan

This May, we have a clear choice. We can choose Labour’s plan for jobs and opportunities, or the uncertainty and distraction of separation and divorce from the rest of the UK.If elected in May, Labour will be focussed entirely on getting our communities through these difficult times and making creating opportunities for our young. Labour has pledged to provide a guaranteed apprenticeship for anyone qualified. We are also committed to

having no tuition fees, so that cost is not a factor when school leavers are considering their futures. The SNP have been a letdown and cancelled projects such as the Glasgow Airport Rail Link costing Glasgow 1300 jobs.Only by voting Labour can we have a Scottish Government fighting for what really matters in Scotland and a local MSP fighting for what really matters in Glasgow Provan.

Homecoming Parade in City CentreThe Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS) held Homecoming Parades to mark their return to Scotland following a tough but successful tour of duty in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. In keeping with tradition dating back hundreds of years, the Battalion paraded through the streets of Glasgow, to show their thanks for the support that members of the public have shown them during the past seven months. The parade also gave the citizens of Glasgow a chance to come out toshow their appreciation to the Battalion for the hard work that they have carried out during their tour of duty. Many friends and families turned out for the parade to show their appreciation and support for the troops. Glasgow’s Lord Provost Bob Winter

commenting on the parade held in Glasgow told the Re-Gen,: “I am always immensely proud in my capacity as Lord Lieutenant to take the Salute at the Homecoming Parades in our city. Our citizens’warmest wishes go to these brave young men and women. We are indebted to our armed forces for their

professionalism and dedication.” Lieutenant Colonel Dougie Graham, Commanding Officer of 2 SCOTS commented on the Battalion’s return and the Homecoming Parade saying, “The parades are an important part of the process of returning to the United Kingdom following an operation. They are joyful public events that allow the

Jocks to march with pride through the towns and cities that many of them are from and be proud of their achievements. “It also gives the families a chance to see their sons and daughters receiving just praise for the work that they have done from members of the public who, ultimately they protect.”

Working together for the cityTHIS spring signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the provision of accessible local employment services for the people of Glasgow. Glasgow’s five local regeneration agencies have joined together to become one citywide organisation called Glasgow’s Regeneration Agency. By coming together as one organisation, the aim is for Glasgow’s Regeneration Agency to become a much more co-ordinated and effective regeneration and employment network for the city. By working collectively and sharing best practice across the city, GRA aims to give people the support at a local level needed to gain and sustain employment. As the organisation enters a period of stability following the merger, every effort has been made to ensure services are maintained locally. Following the introduction of a voluntary severance scheme, in an effort to reduce costs, GRA is now re-deploying some of its highly skilled staff to areas of the city where resources have been reduced. Through this proactive approach, GRA aims to maintain and build on the support offered

to individuals who require assistance for getting back into work while continuing to create training opportunities and giving young people a positive route into education or employment.GRA will continue to secure job opportunities for the people of Glasgow and will lead on supporting companies with their recruitment processes on a number of flagship projects including St Enoch Working, New South Glasgow Hospital, Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative and the Scottish National Arena located at the SECC. By working closely with the organisations involved, GRA will ensure local people have the best opportunity to secure the jobs created, through helping to deliver on the community benefit promises that have been made.GRA Chair, Councillor Pat Chalmers, states “Rather than feel any uncertainty as we begin on our journey with Glasgow’s Regeneration Agency, I view this as a time filled with opportunities for our clients, partners and staff. The work carried out by each of the LRAs previously has made a significant positive

difference to countless individuals and their families throughout the city. I am confident that as we move forward as one organisation, our staff can maintain and improve on this legacy by providing a service that the people of Glasgow deserve. By working together for the city, our goal is to create an organisation that will exceed expectations by putting our clients and businesses interests at the heart of what we are doing.I am confident in our ability to sustain a high level of provision and as we move forward, leading the way in supporting the people of Glasgow who need it most through a seamless city-wide service.”

One in Five Tenants Set to Lose Out in Housing Benefit ChangesSFHA Release Interim Research Findings at Glasgow EventUP to one in five tenants in Scotland will see their incomes fall due to the Coalition Government’s Housing Benefit cuts. This is just one of the worrying interim findings of independent research commissioned by the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) releasedthis week into the impacts of Housing Benefit reform on housing association tenants in Scotland. The findings will be launched at the SFHA’s Welfare Reform conference taking place today in Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel. SFHA is calling on the MSPs elected to the new Scottish Parliament this week to lobby Westminster on behalf of tenants, housings associations and housing co-operatives, whose financial stability will be put at risk by the Coalition Government’s welfare reforms. The SFHA’s campaign, Housing Benefits, aims to highlight the damaging impact the reforms, some of which were introduced in April this year, will have on tenants in the affordable housing sector. There are 250,000 families in housing association and co-operative homes in Scotland and another 250,000 applicants on housing association waiting lists. In Scotland, 60% of social rented tenants rely on Housing Benefit to pay all or part of their rent. Key findings from the SFHA’s report are: • From April 2011, families in social housing with working-age children, (working a 40-hour week on the minimum wage) are worse off by £10.25 per week.

• From April 2013, one third of working-age tenants in Scotland (around 24,000 tenants), who are judged to have more rooms than they need, will lose £11 a week. This is despite the fact there may not be a smaller house available for them to move to. This could cost housing associations £13.8m a year in lost rental income . • Tenants will be penalised for living in a house classed as too big, but have little option. Our findings show that 62% of tenants need only one bedroom, but only 34% live in a one-bed property. This represents chronic under-supply of the right type of housing. • Tenants living in specialist housing will be disproportionately affected by welfare cuts. One in five housing association/co-operative tenants receive disability benefits. Government spending on disability benefits is to be cut by 20% from 2013-14. • Even before the cuts, 40% of working-age tenants on Housing Benefit say they find their finances difficult to manage. The cuts make it almost certain that more tenants will find it harder to pay their rent. This represents a big risk to the financial stability of housing associations and co-operatives. • The new all-in-one benefit, Universal Credit, is set to be paid directly to tenants (instead of to landlords), monthly (instead of weekly), and in arrears (instead of in advance). This will make it harder for tenants to manage their budgets and therefore to pay their rent. SFHA Policy & Strategy Director Maureen Watson said: “The fact that one in five tenants

in Scotland – and our sector houses quarter of a million families – are set to lose income as a result of these changes is shocking. “It’s particularly unfair that families will be penalised financially for living in houses deemed to be too large, when there is often nowhere else for them to go, due to a chronic shortage of affordable housing. This can only get worse with the cuts to housing in the Scottish Budget meaning that fewer homes will be built in the years to come. “There is also a huge risk that the reduction in tenants’ incomes, combined with housing costs being paid direct to those already in financial hardship, will see arrears going up in the sector. which poses a major threat to the financial stability of housing associations and co-operatives.” “These reforms have the potential to impact disproportionately on some of the most vulnerable people in our society and the UK Government should think again. SFHA calls on whoever is elected in Scotland to stand up for tenants, and for housing associations and co-operatives. We urge our elected representatives in Scotland to send a strong message to Westminster as to the damage these changes will cause. We have serious concerns that the views of the devolved administrations are not being listened to. “The Coalition Government has already dropped its earlier proposal to cut Housing Benefit by 10% for those on Job Seekers’ Allowance for more than a year. We urge them to look again at the other proposals to cut benefits which will unfairly penalise the poorest.”

WHAT A RESULT!Thenew Housing Association scores a winner with kit for young footballers

YOUNG footballers in the east end of Glasgow have really scored by receiving a cash windfall from their local housing association. Shawfield 1996s - so named because the youngsters were born in that year or later - have received £1000 from Thenew Housing Association. The money means the youngsters aged 14 and 15 will wear Thenew’s branding on their kit. They money was used to buy tracksuits and jackets. The boys play in the Glasgow and District Football League but impressively, also learn about the game itself with overseas visits and trips to watch matches south of the border. It gives them a greater understanding of football as well as adding an international dimension

to their activities. Coach Ben Queenan said: “We are extremely grateful to Thenew Housing Association for this generous donation which helps us enormously. Running a football team for young boys costs money and we want to give them the very best experience possible. Thenew kit will be worn with pride.” Lawrence McCabe, Community Regeneration Manager at Thenew said: “Thenew is delighted to help Shawfield 1996s.It is another example of Thenew Housing Association’s commitment to help communities where we have our homes andwhere our tenants live.”

Challenge Easthall benefits local communityEASTHALL Park Housing Co-operative and their new reactive maintenance contractor, MITIE, were delighted to support a successful Action for Children Programme delivered in partnership with Easthall Residents Association. The Challenge Easthall project concluded recently and to celebrate a ceremony was held to recognise the achievements of all those that participated. This involved viewing a dvd highlighting the progress of the project and its subsequent achievements as well as presenting the youngsters with their certificates. The project involved Action for Children and Easthall Residents Association providing a 12 week educational and training environmental programme for 12 local young people that produced significant improvements to the environment. The variety of accomplishments included landscaping enhancements,

improving the appearance of the local community centre, graffiti removal and painting of external fencing.A key focus of the project was also to provide the young people with the advice, support and qualifications to plan their next step to access further training and/or employment. All young people who participated will be interviewed for places on the Action for Children Youth Build programme. This particular programme provides 9 months of work and support in the construction industry.

Joe Gracey, Chairperson of Easthall Park Housing Co-operative commented: “This is a good example of how strong local partnership working can make a real difference. Young people in Easterhouse are often unfairly stigmatised with a bad reputation. This was an excellent project that provided an opportunity for young people to put something back into their community. We appreciate in particular the support of MITIE in helping to deliver a project that we feel has delivered real community benefits”.

Blairtummock Housing Association Update

HELEN Casey lives in Rogerfield and is a member of Blairtummock Housing Association’s Management Committee. We asked her why people in Rogerfield would be voting to transfer to Blairtummock Housing Association in the Stock Transfer Ballot.

Why should tenants vote yes?

Local accountability – local people make the decisions and are answerable for them. The rent money stays local – we are only spending our money in Blairtummock and Rogerfield

so you can see where your rent is spent.

What difference would tenants see?

When we transferred the GHA houses in Blairtummock last year the big difference people noticed was in the services – repairs, stair cleaning and environmentals. Our staff members were responsible for ensuring the work was done or the contractors would not be paid. That simple formula makes all the difference.

What else will the Association do?

We have already started to work with tenants about investment priorities in the houses we plan to keep and to talk to those tenants in houses we don’t think have a long term future. We also support wider regeneration – we work with FARE, the Pavillion and Easterhouse Project to provide youth activities; we work with GEMAP to provide money advice and use our Community Hall to support other local groups. My message is clear – if you want to want a say in the future KEEP IT LOCAL.

DALMARNOCK CHAMPIONSIN 2006 Young Scot launched the very first Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards and now five years later the event is bigger and better than ever. On Thursday 7th April 2011 over 500 guests attended the glittering VIP awards ceremony at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of Scotland’s young people in 2010. There were 14 awards, from sports to entertainment, unsung hero and volunteering. The Dalmarnock Futures Forum - a Peer Mentor group from Dalmarnock - were nominated for the ‘Truth about Youth’ award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to tackling drug and alcohol addiction in young people in their community. Neds, disrespectful, uninterested, ignorant and anti-social delinquents are just a few examples of the very descriptions we hear daily to describe young people in Scotland. The ‘Truth about Youth’ category was designed to recognise those who are working hard to challenge the negative perceptions of young people we too often hear about in society. The Dalmarnock Futures Forum were delighted to win ‘The Truth about Youth Award’ presented to them by Strictly Come Dancing Star and Pop Idol Alesha Dixon who saluted these lads as she hailed the awards ceremony as the most inspirational event she had ever attended.“This is the most inspirational awards ceremony I have been to and I have loved every minute of it.” These five young guys from Dalmarnock said “We can’t believe we actually won! Dancing on stage with Alesha Dixon is an experience we will never forget. It was great to see that we are not alone in our fight to make our communities safer and better

places to live, we left encouraged and inspired to continue our fight in the East End.” They continued “We would not be standing here today if it was not for the inspiration, support and encouragement we receive from Yvonne Kucuk our Manager and Kenneth Faulds our Chairperson we couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you!” Guests at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow enjoyed performances from stars such as X Factor favourites Olly Murs, Shayne Ward and girl band Wonderland. Greg McHugh, star of hit comedy Gary: Tank Commander, rubbed shoulders with gold medal swimmer Robbie Renwick at the awards - supported by the Co-operative Foundation. In-demand Olly had to drive back to London after our big night to join the Radio 1 breakfast show with Chris Moyles on Friday when he hailed the awards on-air with particular reference to the Dalmarnock Futures Forum. He said: “It’s been a busy 24 hours but the opportunity to come up here and be a part of this is something I didn’t want to turn down.“There were lots of tears and it was quite emotional but it was also great seeing all the kids with big smiles and having a good time.”Shayne added: “The great thing about these awards is they touch upon so many things that these young people have done.” Even Skins star Freya Mavor, nominated in the entertainment category, said she was not too disappointed to miss out on an award because there were so many inspirational stories. She said: “All the nominations are so worthwhile. These are brilliant projects and some absolutely amazing people.”

ON a beautiful, sunny afternoon on Friday (15th April), Tollcross Housing Association held a ceremony to mark the official opening of the Corbett Street new build development: The project, the Association’s first new build development in over 10 years, will provide 46 new much needed high quality new houses and flats for rent in the Tollcross area. Guests included MP Margaret Curran and Prospective Parliamentar Candidate for Glasgow Shettleston Frank McAveety along with dignitaries from the contractors who have carried out a magnificent job. The project is running well ahead of schedule and the main contractor, CCG, expects to have all of the work on site finished by June 2011, 3 months ahead of the expected completion date. Bill Dougan, Tollcross Housing Association’s Chairperson, was delighted with the new homes and he told the Re-Gen, “We are so happy to be developing again! This project had been in the pipeline for years, with a variety of designs and layouts proposed for the site during that period. It’s a real testament to the hard work and determination of the members of the Management Committee to see this fantastic project completed. It’s another great step forward for the Association” The project required an investment of over £6.20 million. Glasgow City Council provided £3.60 million of Housing Association Grant for the project and the remaining sum was raised as private finance in a loan from the Clydesdale Bank. Special Guest, the Lord Provost of Glasgow,

Councillor Bob Winters was on hand to make a presentation to the May family, one of the first of the lucky residents to move into their new home. Following the official opening, the guests were then invited to view the new homes and what a surprise they got. The way the homes are designed is great testimony to the team of designers Tollcross Housing Association engaged. Excellent space throughout with plenty of cupboard space and beautifully equipped toilets complete with shower facilities. The excellently laid out back and front gardens certainly make Corbett Street a desirable place to raise a family. Clive Douglas, (Director of Tollcross Housing Association), also announced at the opening that the Association had now received confirmation from Glasgow City Council of the Grant Approval for the Association’s next new build project at Braidfauld House. On behalf of the Association Clive thanked the Lord Provost for the Council’s on-going support for the area. Clive informed the guests that; “Tollcross Housing Association was delighted to be playing a major role in the on-going regeneration of the East End. These are exciting times for this area of the city with the new section of the M74 about to open and all the Commonwealth Games projects taking shape. We should not forget just how important the provision of high quality affordable housing is to the future of the East End. We will need to fight hard to secure every penny of funding we can in the difficult financial times.”Hopefully, it won’t be 10 years until the next new build opening ceremony for Tollcross Housing Association.

Directgov website is offering help on finding a permanent course. ‘Next Step’ is a course search engine created by the government providing course information on all different types of courses from computing and IT to hairdressing and beauty. It is a great opportunity to get yourself into a course that you will enjoy and gain a qualification at the end of which will look good on your CV. It’s certainly worth checking this out especially if you are feeling at a loose end during unemployment or even if you are thinking about a new career direction. You can find courses to fit around your schedule and may even be able to get funding to pay for the course. The easiest way to find out if you are eligible for funding is to contact SAAS( Student Awards Agency for Scotland) on 0030 555 0505. It would also be worth checking out different college websites to see directly the types of courses on

offer and the entry requirements as a lot of colleges are keen to take mature students on. Visiting Glasgow Pathfinder website at www.eastglasgow.co.uk has useful information about getting into studying, they have also released the new programme for John Wheatley College with courses starting in autumn 2011 or you could visit John Wheatley College website or pop into the college and get a prospectus.

However, if you are just out of school and looking to go

straight into work, this is the time to be looking because at this time of year retail shops will be looking to employ for

summer but if your CV is looking bare then there is help at hand.

You can arrange a meeting with your local GRA (Glasgow Regeneration Agency) were

they can help create a CV that employers won’t be able to

resist. They will tell you the specific attributes employers are looking to see on your CV and what information to leave out, even if you have had a gap in your employment history they will show you how to work around this. Another tip is trying your hand at volunteering, even though you are not getting paid, this option can open many doors for you and introduce you to new

GHA to recruit another 20 school leavers as modern apprentices GLASGOW Housing Association (GHA) is looking for 20 more school leavers to sign up for a career in housing. The youngsters will be recruited later this year through GHA’s Modern Apprenticeship Programme which was launched in 2009 in partnership with Glasgow City Council. The programme, part of Glasgow City Council’s Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative, lasts for two years with the apprentices given on-the-job experience in one of GHA’s local housing offices or at the city centre base at Granite House. Work experience is complemented with training and leads to nationally recognised qualifications in housing.

So far 30 school leavers have successfully been put

through the GHA programme since 2009. The programme is backed by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish

Government.

Mick McCabe, GHA’s Executive Director of Customer Services, said: “Our Modern Apprenticeship

Programme is a fantastic opportunity for school leavers to get their first foot on the career ladder.

“We are looking for youngsters with a real passion for housing and a determination to do the very best they can for our tenants and factored homeowners. “We’re delighted to be able to give youngsters their big break and look forward to working with them as they gain nationally recognised qualifications.” One of our apprentices from last year, Jibran Ellahi,

said: “It’s a great opportunity for someone coming straight from school. I’ve learned so much over the past year. It’s also a great company to work for.” Youngsters who attended a Glasgow school, are aged 16-18 and left either at Christmas 2010 or will leave in Summer 2011 can apply for an apprenticeship at GHA by registering online at the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative site at http://glasgow.mappit.org.ukGHA’s Modern Apprenticeship programme won the 2010 Skills Development Scotland Award for Large Employers.

contacts. This can also be a great way to show how keen and ready for work you are as well as being a page filler for your CV while providing good references for you. Volunteering can mean that when a space opens up for a job you are likely to be remembered by that company for your enthusiasm and if you’re lucky you’ll have first dibs on a job. Another useful tip when handing your CV into a company, is to always ask for the manager and hand it directly to them if they are available at the time, this shows you’re keen and means that your CV won’t end up in the wrong hands and will most definitely be looked over.

Finding a job can be a testing time, especially when we all have bills to pay. The main thing is to stay positive and motivate yourself by getting out there and speaking to people, asking friends and family if they have heard of any job opportunities opening up in your area, volunteering, using the internet and going directly to a company’s website to check out if they have any vacancies. You could find yourself a course that you can get funding for to further your career, if you are young or old (age doesn’t matter) because this is the time to apply for courses starting in autumn. There are options out there for you; it’s not a time to wallow in self pity, but a time to better yourself.

PARTNERSHIP CONGRATULATES TOMORROW’S LEADERSSIXTEEN people from around Glasgow have graduated from the Tomorrow’s Leaders programme, supported by Glasgow Community Planning Partnership. Tomorrow’s Leaders is a training and development programme which broadens the knowledge, skills and confidence of the city’s aspiring leaders, to enable them to develop the communities of the future. The nine month programme saw the 16 people from diverse groups such as Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), Glasgow Housing Association (GHA), Strathclyde Police, Glasgow City Council and local community organisations work together to develop leadership, communication and management skills. The programme gives participants the opportunity to develop attributes needed for community planning and regeneration. It develops specific leadership skills while drawing on participants’ own experiences and fosters a keen understanding of how organisations operate in Glasgow. This work can help strengthen relationships between organisations citywide. It also supports partnership working to make community planning and its core themes of early intervention and employability more effective. Graduate, Debbie McGowan of the Urban Fox youth initiative said: “I feel I am better equipped to address situations in a more productive way. In the past I have read about models of leadership and been a little reserved

in using them but the course’s practical element has been the catalyst for me to implement them in my work practice.” Norma Russell of Glasgow City Council said: “My department is going through reform which has required me to change my role and take on a wider caseload and new location. The learning and confidence I have gained with this programme has put me in a stronger position to lead my service through the challenges ahead.” Mark Meehan of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, said: “To be given the opportunity to develop through the shared experiences of such a diverse and talented group of partners has been invaluable and will benefit greatly the City of Glasgow, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and myself in the years

to come.” Councillor Jim Coleman, Chair of Glasgow Community Planning Partnership, said: “The Tomorrow’s Leaders programme represents a big commitment by those taking part, as well as their sponsoring organisations but it provides an excellent opportunity for participants to expand their skills. “Through the programme, the graduates now have a shared vision of how to work together to develop better services for our communities.” “From my point of view the programme has been a great success, said course leader Norrie Gilliland from Peoplematters, the organisation that runs it, “now in its third year, the participants have yet again tackled the programme with great gusto and enthusiasm.”

Shettleston Woman Jailed A Shettleston woman who killed a father-of-two in Glasgow with a single punch has been jailed for six years and nine months. Kayleigh Murray, 20, from Shettleston, admitted the culpable homicide of 29-year-old Paul Woods in the city’s Maryhill Road, on 28 July last year. She punched Mr Woods after he chased her friend, 19-year-old Chelsea Speirs, who had just stolen his alcohol. Speirs, from Springboig, was jailed for two years and three months after admitting stealing Mr Woods’ alcohol. Both women were originally charged with murder, but the Crown accepted their pleas to reduced charges.

DETECTIVES at Shettleston Police Office are appealing for witnesses and information after two girls were assaulted on Saturday 30 April 2011. Around midnight last Saturdayl, the two 17 year old girls were on their way home, walking along Gardenside Avenue in Carmyle, when they became involved in an argument with 2 men. The men then assaulted the 2 girls and as a result one has been left with serious facial injuries. Emergency services were called and both girls were taken by ambulance to hospital. One was taken to Hairmyres Hospital here she was treated for minor injuries and then released and the other was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and was then transferred to the Southern General Hospital where she is currently detained in a serious but stable condition.

The suspects made off in an unknown direction. Both suspects are described as being white, Scottish and aged around 25-30 years with local accents. The first suspect is around 6’ 00” tall, with a slim build, dark brown short hair, dark eyes and stubble and what is described as “very skinny” arms. He is also thought to have a minor cut under his left eye as a result of the assault. At the time of the assault he was wearing a white T-shirt and dark denims. The second suspect is also around 6’ 00” tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black T-shirt. Detective Constable Craig Paterson from Shettleston CID said:- “Following this completely unprovoked attack on these two young women, officers have been carrying out extensive enquiries and speaking to locals in an

effort to gain more information about this assault. “As it happened in a residential area, I have no doubt people in the local area will be able to help us identify these two thugs. “I would urge anyone who was in Gardenside Avenue around the time of the assault and saw or even heard anything, regardless how insignificant they feel it is, to get in touch. Also, I would appeal to anyone who has any information on these two, to get in touch as soon as possible. (The Re-Gen has now discovered that the police are now following a definite line of enquiry) Anyone with any information should contact Shettleston Police Office on 0141 532 4836. Alternatively, calls can be made via CRIMESTOPPERS

A full-time community police officer has taken up position at the Forge Shopping Centre in the Gallowgate, Glasgow. Strathclyde Police Constable Gordon Joyce will work hand-in-hand with existing centre security, offering public reassurance and dealing with any incidents that happen within the east end shopping mall.

It’s a role familiar to PC Joyce, who carried out similar duties for eight years in Hamilton town centre. He is also a former school campus officer, a role which he says also has similarities with this new post. Strathclyde Police already has officers in Braehead and other retail centres in Glasgow.

SERIOUS ASSAULT – CARMYLE, GLASGOW.

ROBBERY – EASTERHOUSESTRATHCLYDE Police is appealing for information after an armed robbery at an off sales in Easterhouse last Thursday (28th April). Around 8.40pm last Thursday, two men, one armed with a knife and one armed with what appeared to be a firearm, entered G101 off sales in Lochdochart Road, Easterhouse and threatened staff. They then made off from the shop with a three- figure sum of money. No firearm was discharged and no persons were injured, however, the three female staff members are badly shaken as a result

of the robbery. The first suspect is described as white, 25-30 years of age, 5ft 7” – 5ft 9” in height with dark hair. He was wearing dark-coloured jogging trousers, white trainers and a black hooded top with ‘Henleys’ printed on the front in white and red. The second suspect is white, 25-30 years of age, medium to stocky build, 5ft 6” in height. He was wearing a light-coloured hooded top with bright horizontal stripes on it, black trousers and white trainers. Detective Constable Vicki McGarry of Shettleston Police Office told the Re-

Gen, “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Lochdochart Road, Easterhouse around the time of the incident last Thursday, who may have seen these two men acting suspiciously in the area to come forward. I would also ask anyone who recognises the descriptions of the suspects to contact us. “Any witnesses, or anyone with information that may assist police enquiries is asked to contact Shettleston Police Office on 0141 532 4800. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”

TOLLCROSS ADVICE & LEARNING CENTRETOLLCROSS Advice & Learning Centre has come along way since moving into their new and improved premises at 1061-63 Tollcross Road on 10th May last year. The Centre that is managed by Tollcross Community Trust & Tollcross Housing Association had to move into larger premises due to the demand on their services provided to the wider community. Since moving in a 12 computer Learning Centre, Community Garden and Community Library have been incorporated into the Centre

that was already very busy providing debt advice, benefits advice and a credit union service. The Credit Union membership continues to grow with over 600 members being provided a service within the Tollcross branch of BCD Credit Union. The staff and volunteers are kept very busy at the Centre with the membership of the Credit Union seeing an increase, in particular, due to the introduction of Instant Loans that are available to people on a low income or benefits. People who are using the Instant

Loan/Benefits service are mainly people who do not have bank accounts and see Instant Loans as a low cost alternative to door step lenders. The Centre is supported by BCD Credit Union and provides savings, loans, junior savings and foreign currency service. In partnership with John Wheatley College a Learning Centre is available with 2 x classes per week for 12 people that are really well used as are the drop-in times that people can come in at their leisure. As the computer classes are for beginners many people are taking the opportunity to come along to the friendly informal classes to learn more about the internet etc. Tollcross Housing Association support the Centre in many ways but in particular provide a Welfare Rights Officer, Joe Penders, who provides Advice Surgeries as well as trains staff and volunteers on benefits and money advice. The Centre provided clients with financial gains for the year 2010/11 of

£250,183.28, this includes additional benefits; debts written off via Bankruptcy and reduced debts by Trust Deed.Advisors dealt with £224,518.35 of debt within the Centre that entailed work such as repayment plans, bankruptcy and trust deeds put in place for clients. The Centre also has free access to an adviser at First Choice Finance Scotland. Playbusters have set up a small Community Garden to the rear of the Centre and The Bridge Library upkeep the small Community Library within the Centre, both these projects have attracted new people to the Centre as well as new volunteers. Another asset for the community will be the Work Club coming to the Centre in partnership with Job Centre Plus. All in all the Centre has gone from strength to strength and couldn’t do this without partner organisations over the last year, many who are mentioned above and others who have supported

the project but mostly a big thanks must go to the team of volunteers who work with Veronica & Laura to make sure the community get a first class service.

If you would like to find out more about the Centre or use the services please contact us on: 0141 764 1234 or email: [email protected]

GLASGOW CITY F.C. 8, IN-VERNESS 0. CHAMPIONS Glasgow City made a tremen-dous start to the Scottish Pre-mier League campaign at Pe-tershill Park. Visitors’ goalkeeper Kim Jappy stopped a quick goal inside the opening minute, but was pow-erless when Jane Ross scored after Christie Murray set-up Lisa Evans for the opener after 7 minutes. The same player put City into a deserved 2-0 lead, and In-verness conceded a third goal scored by Leanne Ross just before half-time. Glasgow City had to wait 17 minutes into the second half for another goal, and it arrived when full-back Emma Mitch-ell crashed home a pinpoint Emma Fernon cross. Former Celtic star Christie Murray fi nally opened her City goal account with a brilliantly struck free kick. Jappy had no chance fol-lowing a Lauren McMurchie half volley, and the scoreline was raised to 7-0 after Emma Fernon netted a Jane Ross pass. Lisa Evans completed a comfortable afternoon for the champions after fi ne play be-tween substitute Eilish McSor-ley and Jane Ross. GLASGOW CITY F.C. 0, GLASGOW GIRLS F.C. 3.UNDER-15 Girls were more than convincing league win-ners at Nethercraigs. Poor fi n-ishing stopped City from con-ceding many more goals. On target were Amy Allan, Karen Baillie and Leigh Ferrol. HUTCHISON VALE 0, GLAS-GOW CITY 5. CITY created an amazing 37 goalscoring oppor-tunities on a shocking playing surface. Lauren McMurchie made the breakthrough from a Leanne Ross pass, and the same player added a second after Ross hit the bar. Within a minute Jane Ross grabbed a third, and Rachie Corsie No 4 from an Evans cross. McMur-chie completed her hat-trick from a Ross cut-back. GLASGOW CITY 1, GLAS-GOW GIRLS F.C. 5. GGFC Under-15 completed the dou-ble over City- this time in their League Cup Section. On target were Charmaine McGuire (2), Ainsley Gilmour, Laura Gillen and a Trialist. HAMILTON 3, GLASGOW GIRLS F.C. 3. A battling perfor-mance from GGFC Under-17s. Scorers: Lauren Coleman (2) and Shannon McManus. GLASGOW GIRLS F.C. 4, MILTON ROVERS 1. GOALS from Stephanie Brophy, Sa-rah Killen, Mairade MacRae and Niamh Breslin deservedly brought victory for the Seniors. VALE OF CLYDE 1, WHITLETTS VICS 1. PROMO-TION-chasing Vics hit an inju-ry-time equaliser at Tollcross. Stephen McGowan crashed home a great fi nish in 84 min-utes, but Ricky Hanvey levelled from a left-wing cross after 91

minutes. WOLVES BOYS’ CLUB 4, LA-NARKSHIRE BOYS’ CLUB 4after extra-time. WOLVES Un-der-16 needed penalty kicks to reach their second fi nal of the season - this time in the Mc-Cutcheon Cup at Ravenswood. Craig Young, Dean Roy, Samir Khan-Young and Lewis Davis netted before Wolves won 3-2 on penalty kicks. GLYNHILL AFC 1, WELL-HOUSE AMATEURS 3. A goal down after 2 minutes in the fi fth round of the West of Scotland Cup, House soon equalised through Craig Smith. Davy Fisher netted from a cor-ner, and young Colin Kilmour chipped the goalkeeper from 25 yards for their third goal. In the 6th round, Wellhouse crushed Rutherglen AFC 7-1. No goalscorers available.
